John Woo knows how to deliver. This 90's epic definitely a favorite of the time and still holds up in entertainment value and action every step of the way; especially that crazy boat chase and conclusion to the film.

Interesting fact: the person singing "Over the Rainbow" is Olivia Newton-John (RIP), which makes for a Grease reunion of sorts. This is the closest Hollywood-era John Woo ever got to his Hong Kong glory days. You have to check out The Killer (1989), Hard Boiled and A Better Tomorrow 1 and 2.

There's something different about 90s action. The Rock, Broken Arrow, Con Air. And somehow Cage or Travolta always has something to do with it.

Hi Dasha. Face Off was one of the introduction to Western audiences of its director John Woo. He was a Hong Kong. film director and had made some seriously crazy action packed movies (my favourite being Hard Boiled) and brought that fast and furious action style to Hollywood in the early 90's with films like JCVD in Hard Target but Face off was one if the most successful (in my opinion of course 😊) but isn't an easy story line is quite daft and not easy to digest. It does though have some fantastic JW action sequences that elevated it to an epic action status. also it showed off Nicholas cage's more psycho style to great effect (which became his more memorable acting method) 😂 JW made Broken Arrow with Travolta a year before Face Off which isn't too bad and a few years later with NC in Windtalkers which was based on a true story and pretty good. too.

  • @TSIRKLAND

You're absolutely right. The premise is so out there. According to the surgical technology we had at the time, and still today, such a procedure is absolutely impossible so quick with no scarring- skin transplants like that take weeks and months of healing. Also the underlying bone structure plays a big role in what a face look like, not just the skin. Also body type- Cage is much slimmer; Travolta is more broad.
HOWEVER! If we as the audience can simply accept the premise for what it is, then the dramatic tension of who is who and living a different life, and one's relationships, etc- all of that stuff plays very well.
I personally think that Nic Cage is good, though somewhat over-rated; he's not some acting god, he's just quite good. Travolta is also good, though his involvement with Scientology puts me off. But in this film, as actors, as characters, they both did a very good job of playing each other; picking up on the mannerisms of their "own" character, and their "borrowed face" character; they played it very well.

The "face-swapping" procedure seems unrealistic because the original idea for Face/Off was that it was a sci-fi movie set in the future with future tech. John Woo (if I remember right) was the one who wanted it switched so that it was set in (at the time) modern day. Even with that swap, the film is still a 100% action movie classic. Travolta and Cage had a blast playing each other, and John Woo is without doubt, one of THE legendary action directors in cinema. Glad you enjoyed it 🙂

I realized what great actors Travolta and Cage are when this thought popped into my head: For a large part of the movie (try to keep up) John Travolta has to play Sean Archer pretending to be Castor Troy, and at the same time Nicholas Cage has to play Castor Troy pretending to be Sean Archer! If that sentence didn't make sense to you, read it again. Because it actually DOES make sense.

"No. You should have left them out of it. Your son was an accident. I wanted to kill you. But, you took it too personally. Why couldn't you just kill yourself or let it go?"
    "No father could."
    "No brother could either."
    "Neither could a sister."
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Dominique Swain.
Reused Props Fact: The magnetic boots the prisoners wear in Erewhon prison are the same boots worn by the Goombas in Super Mario Bros. (1993).
Good Frienemies Fact: Nicolas Cage and John Travolta spent two weeks together before filming to learn how to play each other. They decided on specific gestures and vocal cadences for each character that could be mimicked.
Music Enthusiast Fact: The scene of Adam (David McCurley) listening to Over The Rainbow (1989) by Olivia Newton-John on his portable headphones was John Woo's idea and not part of the original script. Paramount Pictures refused to finance the extra scene and John Woo had to use his own money to make that happen. He was later paid back as the film turned out to be profitable.
Casting Notes Fact: Originally Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone were in mind to play the lead roles. When John Woo was brought in to direct, he decided that John Travolta and Nicolas Cage would be more suited to the roles. Other pairs that the studio wanted were Michael Douglas (who was the executive producer for this movie) and Harrison Ford, Bruce Willis and Alec Baldwin, and Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.

That scene did NOT age well & I wish Castor Troy had done a lot worse to him.. No, nevermind, then it still would have been fictional. Maybe I shoulda said I wish John Travolta had done a lot worse to him.. If only Dominique Swain had that knife a little earlier, am I right? Lol. It's been awhile since I've seen your videos. Your eyes look good without so much make-up.
