She knew who he was. The way Brad Pitt played this part his eyes were expressionless and cold just like death. Wonderful acting of all cast members in this movie.
Death real death is never like they show in the movies. Softer than wings of a butterfly, one second you are there & the next you are not. I've experienced the other side & the trip between the two places, life & death are the scary part.
@@sphinxrising1129 My library card's been punched, I need a sneak preview. What did you see that made death be frightening? ( if you don't mind my asking...).
They both played their parts so well... her emotions showed every bit on her face.. confusion, worry, fear, denial, and love. Looking at Brad's face was like looking at death itself. Emotionless, empty, void
"Emotionless, empty, void." I didn't see that at all; I saw a deep compassion and a wisdom beyond understanding. I even saw love, despite him not consciously knowing what that was.
I dont think anybody else would have done justice to Claire's role. She could not have uttered a single word and let her eyes do the rest. So so very pretty.

A truly miraculous performance by Claire Forlani! I loved two aspects of this scene in particular: 1) The contrast in the eyes - hers gradually being filled with absolute terror and his filled with calm compassion and ancient knowledge, and 2) How the name "Joe" is used throughout the movie as a protection device for the person saying it - Bill uses it ("This is Joe") to protect himself at the Board Meeting when Drew asks, "Who is the man standing to your left?"; Joe uses it ("I'm Joe") to protect himself when Susan asks, "So tell me Joe... How come a man as attractive, intelligent, well-spoken... diffident in the most seductive way, and yet... powerful... is all alone in this world?", and Susan uses it ("You're Joe") in this scene to protect herself from needing to say out loud the horrifying truth of who Joe really is.
Amazing analysis that just slices through the fog. I'm overwhelmed actually with all the interaction I've got from this clip. Like a few here, you just nail it! Thanks much, sir 🙏🏽
"You're Joe", is simply an acceptance of death. When it is in your face, when you see it approaching from a distance, when you dream of it, when it comes to find you. You are you, in the same vein. Once you accept that fact, life gains new meaning. Like the rays of the sun going on for eons, we mistakenly think they disappear at night... You are you, in dusk, and in light. Accept yourself, and you'll be alright.
I have just watched this movie for the first time. I love your comment, you put into words, that which I can not articulate as well. I still can't stop thinking about the film.
She knew, but instead of recoiling in horror preserved on the surface the fragile fiction of "Joe" to be kind. She deliberately let him down easy and with grace because she still cared. He reciprocated and accepted this with bittersweet love and grace. They were both kind to one another. A beautiful scene.
@Alex M If you watch her expression again throughout the scene, it is clear that she knew, especially with him gazing at her which was a sign throughout the movie that he was conveying something. And her wan little smile was perfect for what she knew could never be, but letting him down easy by preserving what they both now knew was a polite fiction between them. The contrived explanation that you offer is not borne out by the expressions of the characters, what they say, and the music. Her conscious mind knew, starting with the expressed realization that he was someone else and saying that scared her to find out who. When Joe says it doesn't matter what I am, but that she knows who he is; listen to the the music right after that while he is looking at her and she is looking at him, and watch her expressions as she comes to a decision. It's all there if you pay attention. Ah, yes, and Joe had a bittersweet smile because he know that what he wanted could now never be, but still cared. The mutual caring shown at the end of the scene is beautiful.
I've come to realize that the five stages of grief plays as part of the continual theme throughout the movie. Once she realizes that he is death she goes into denial. A truly amazing film and one of my personal favorites.

This scene always brings tears to my eyes, I hope my son and daughter were greeted with an being this compassionate. I have always felt they must have as peaceful as they seemed when they finally drew that last breath. My wife and I watched without knowing what it was about a month after their funeral. So many tears of pain and joy, such a deeply touching movie.
I suggest there should be a kind of award called Delayed Awards, just waiting for the movies being absorbed deeper more in audiences to get the right judgement on the movie. Like give it 10 years, 15 years and we bring them out to review and grant awards? I have seen a lot of movies underrated.
I really liked what this movie has to say about living. Also IMO this is a good example of how older movies with good idea can be remade or updated for modern audiences.
Beautifully said. Watch “ The Razor’s Edge” with Bill Murray. The most important film of this 62 year old’s life. Although this is definitely a masterpiece.
I have been told I look and sound exactly like Brad pitt all my teenage years and into my 20's. By dentists and employers and girlfriends and friends and strangers and shop keepers and teachers. It's unbearable, I don't know why God did this to me. If you're going to make be beautiful, make me uniquely beautiful, don't make me a carbon copy of one of the most famous people on Earth. I sometimes want to become fat and ugly.
I have repeatedly been in hook ups and short term relationships only to find out that they just think I look like Brad pitt, nothing more. It breaks my heart to pieces every time. I will never find love unless I find someone who doesn't know who Brad Pitt is. I wish this on no one.
This scene was a tearjerker when you could see in her eyes that she finally knew who "joe" really was! It, to me, should have at least gotten her an Oscar nomination!
As I told someone else: In any other industry Claire Forlani might have gained iconic status. But this is Hollywood, where competition -- not to mention, politics -- is so great that breaking to the top is so difficult.
This scene is in parallel to Bill meeting Joe for the first time... Bill: "You're..." Death: Yes? Bill: You're..." Death: "Who am I?" Bill: "...Death." Like father, like daughter, but daughter didn't want to utter the truth.
She actually already knew who he was in that scene. Just didn’t utter the name 'death'. She then changed her feelings and said 'you are joe', which is just to relax him, not to break him. The most outstanding scene they played here.
But if you notice, Death is disappointed and say "Yes, I'm Joe". He wanted her to love him, Death, not the shell of Joe. He was hoping she could understand him, truly, without the filter of Joe, but she can't, she is only human after all. She can only understand Joe, she cannot comprehend him as Death despite her effort.
@@IdgaradLyracant It's terrifying. Especially the implications for anyone...it's like staring into a bottomless abyss and being asked to jump into it trusting that everything will be just fine.

One of the best movies in history. An epic, existential drama. Claire is unbelievable. Innocent, poised, but the eyes and her shy demeanor ate impeccable. Perfect cast.
It is a great movie that will stand the test of time. Firstly the score is one of the best ever made, and secondly it is understated, which is critical to how it feels. Thirdly, the cast is superb, could not have been better IMHO.

Life craves death, and death craves life, death never got the chance to live, he's sad and longs for what everyone else had a chance at. I feel sympathy for him, he just wants to be like everyone else, but instead he witnesses everyone elses life, and only shows up when it's time to take them, making him even more sad, because it makes him realize over and over what he can never have, he longs for freedom, yet death is freedom to most, but for him life is freedom, we all want to escape.
One of my favorite movies. I tried to watch it for the first time shortly after my father's death, and just could not. I've watched it several times since. Love it.
When Death realized that she was in love with the coffee shop guy and not him. Even after that he was so in love with her that he resurrected him for her so she wouldn't be alone.
Yes! I didn't think his eyes were dead... they were full of knowledge he couldn't share. And the love he had experienced for her which compelled him to do the right thing in spite of his eternal loneliness.
I don’t know, she seemed in love with Joe as Death too and seemed disappointed when the coffee guy returned. Especially when she kept ask questions at him knowing he would have no idea. E.g. wishing he could have met her father. Was she in love with Death or both?
@@grdoreza She was always in love with the Coffee Shop Joe. Death Joe didn't do anything to spoil her original interest and desire. Hence her appearing to "love" Death Joe as well. When Coffee Shop Joe reappeared at the end, she's inquisitive to confirm this scene and revelation of the situation that there were 2 Joe's. She had just witnessed Death Joe with her Dad the last few days, so her "wishing" Coffee Shop Joe could have met her father was just to gauge Coffee Shop Joe's response and confirm she was now dealing with Coffee Shop Joe.
This movie is enjoyable for so many reasons; among them, it's light-hearted comedy. It begins from the moment Bill tells Joe: "Excuse me, it just occurred to me that if you were to introduce you to the others and tell them who you are, I don't think anyone will be staying for dinner"; and continues through to Joe's virginal experience with peanut butter in the kitchen and Susan asking him disbelievingly "what are you eating?"; to Drew's exasperation in the board room at Joe's fun with the swivel chair and delight over butter cookies: "Who is that guy?"; the sick sister in the hospital: "Some place you picked (for a holiday)" when she realized who Joe was; "Death and taxes" -- Joe's final rejoinder to Drew after he gives him the cover story of being an IRS agent. There are probably a few more that I've missed, but in all, they add up to what was already an incredible script.
I really have to watch this movie again - when it first came out I was distracted by just beautiful he was I couldn't even keep track of what was going on.
@@Chambinho4.0 She knows in that part of consciousness that exists without words that she is in the presence of Death itself. The life spring within us recognizes it's opposite. The body trembles, mouth dries, the mind retreats from the unknown. With tremendous strength and kindness, the woman answers the unanswerable: "I'm afraid.....you're Joe." The first words acknowledge our human inability to face our eventual nonbeing. The second statement is for the man, accepting what he is and reaffirming her love. The physical tremor is from the spark within when it recognizes its fragility.... we react like any small creature to a brush with death.

Everything, and I mean everything about this film is simply delicious. The casting, the performances, the narrative, the cinematography and direction and, for me, the soundtrack, are exquisite and exceptional. I love it when Hollywood accidentally allows a good film to be green lighted. Obviously It helps securing Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins to a project, but it is a shame that screenplays like this are often sidelined in favour of solid wins like marvel, fast and furious, and other franchises these days. Those films can also be good but lack anything of the beautiful rich tapestry that films like this offer. I can count on the fingers of one hand movies that have been made in this era that I can include in this films company (additional suggestions welcome !) Seven pounds Magnolia The Sixth Sense No Country for old men Lost In Translation This film will endure. I know it is a retelling of an old story but with a Thomas Newman score as good as this I confess I could pretty much hit the repeat button and sit through another three hours again on any day of the week

I have always felt they must have as peaceful as they seemed when they finally drew that last breath. My wife and I watched without knowing what it was about a month after their funeral. So many tears of pain and joy, such a deeply touching movie.
VadulTharys , so sorry to hear of your loss.
Death is not proud fierce or dreadful. Death is kind and gentle. Your little lad and lady were and still are in good hands. I assure you.
The best romantic fantasy ever on cinema! Falling in love with Death and turn him back into Life!!
That breeze of eternity in his eyes is very intense.
I suggest there should be a kind of award called Delayed Awards, just waiting for the movies being absorbed deeper more in audiences to get the right judgement on the movie. Like give it 10 years, 15 years and we bring them out to review and grant awards? I have seen a lot of movies underrated.
Oh, this is a great idea, that would be awesome 😊
Yes Shawshank Redemption is another one
I really liked what this movie has to say about living. Also IMO this is a good example of how older movies with good idea can be remade or updated for modern audiences.
Beautifully said. Watch “ The Razor’s Edge” with Bill Murray. The most important film of this 62 year old’s life. Although this is definitely a masterpiece.
That's a great idea! Do you think society today would find reasons to dislike, critique or insult great films from the past?
She was outstanding in this scene.
Totally!
How on earth does anyone look like he looks? He is just unreal.
That's why he plays "death".
Gorgeous Man
I have been told I look and sound exactly like Brad pitt all my teenage years and into my 20's.
I met Brad Pitt at a Formula One race in Texas once, even he himself was shocked. He asked to take a picture with ME!
This scene was a tearjerker when you could see in her eyes that she finally knew who "joe" really was! It, to me, should have at least gotten her an Oscar nomination!
Instead of hesitating to finally say "You're Joe." She was within a split second of saying "You are Death."
Totally! ❤
As I told someone else: In any other industry Claire Forlani might have gained iconic status. But this is Hollywood, where competition -- not to mention, politics -- is so great that breaking to the top is so difficult.
Literally the best moment in film acting history and she wasn't even nominated for an Oscar much less anyone remembering her name.
This scene is in parallel to Bill meeting Joe for the first time...
Bill: "You're..."
Death: Yes?
Bill: You're..."
Death: "Who am I?"
Bill: "...Death."
Like father, like daughter, but daughter didn't want to utter the truth.
Fascinating recall 😲
Thanks much!
This movie is brilliant in so many ways. Great script, acting and production.
One of the best ever and one of the most underrated too!
And musical score, it was amazing.
I watched this movie yesterday for the first time, at 32, after my ex talked about it for years.
I cried.
What a beautiful movie.
And that scene... Chills.
One of the best movies in history. An epic, existential drama. Claire is unbelievable. Innocent, poised, but the eyes and her shy demeanor ate impeccable. Perfect cast.
It’s a cult classic…welcome to the cult
Amazing acting from them both! I could feel the emotions as if they were a real couple!
Yes
She is one of the most beautiful ladies I have ever seen in a movie Wow
Omg Brad Pitt beautiful beyond words ❤ This film had me in tears especially the ending heartbreaking.. 🥺❤😩❤
This is one scene you can watch over and over without tiring. Claire Forlani's expression, especially, is amazing.
It is a great movie that will stand the test of time. Firstly the score is one of the best ever made, and secondly it is understated, which is critical to how it feels. Thirdly, the cast is superb, could not have been better IMHO.
Agree with you on every count. Shame the useless Academy didn't see fit to award the amazing Thomas Newman an award. They are truly clueless.
Everything about this movie was magical fr
When you realize that Joe will ultimately end up with her regardless...
and for him it may feel like an eternity or mere moments for a variety of reasons
Yes. But he has now stepped back to his proper role in eternity.
Extraordinary! True art. Completely captivated by both of them. I haven’t seen this film in such a long time and was amazing to stumble upon this. RUclips is magic.
I just hit 700k views on it. The nostalgia people have over this is amazing.
What a powerful scene. Her acting, facial expressions are so moving.
In any other industry, Claire Forlani might have gained iconic status. But Hollywood is so competitive -- and so political -- that breaking to the top is so extremely hard.
Love it, great acting. The fear she shows when she realizes Joe is not from this world.
The most emotive eyes on the planet.
What expressions, what feelings, what acting.. woww
They were both incredible ... matching each other frame for frame. This is easily my best Brad Pitt film!
00:20. The look she gives him, the fear of the truth along with the ever so subtle shake, that was horrifying for me to watch! Just as scary as any horror film. I wasn’t expecting to be scared.
Well said. Your the few who seen it
Such an underrated movie. Its ridiculous. The wind blowing her hair works so effectively here with the theme as well.
I have watched it about 20 times over the past 20 years. And each time, I fall in love with it all over again. Truly magical!
this movie has always been on top of my list ..one of the best movie ever done...
Yes, Michael: An amazing movie ❤️
Love how his left eye is dark, like he's really not alone in there. His countenance is dark tho. Like death is in control
Please God let him be the one who comes for me when it's my time
This movie was outstanding!! so much emotion 🤧all over the place from one part to another 🌟🌟🌟🌟❤️🙏Best movie all actors outstanding performances ❤️ give them all🌟🌟🌟🌟
That was the impossible love. It was not meant to happen! A human being, falls in love with the "Angel of death". Very well played.
Would death technically be a fallin angel? 🤔🤔
@@destinixshakur In the context of the movie... ehh... more of a long overdue vacation.
Love it.
What artistry to make such a haunting scene that sends chills down your spine without ever doing anything spooky.
Nah she loved death.....
How do you feel when you find out you fell in love with Death itself.
fetuso fetuso, Claire Forlani just showed us.
fetuso fetuso Deadpool?
beefboy01 but how does she know
Wasim Thalath by analizing him, She's kind of a wise women
Wasim Thalath a woman labeled him as a spirit right before he took her before her time. And he doesn’t act like a human would.
The soundtrack is beautiful.
Actor performance, dialogue, camera, lighting, this is how movies that actually mean something, are done.
I KEEP COMING BACK TO THIS CLIP
The film grew on me and now I LOVE it.
She is just awesome! Very natural.
O Brasil simplesmente ama essa atriz Claire
The Claire Forlani 's and Bread Pitt 's eyes are really amazing !!!
I really have to watch this movie again - when it first came out I was distracted by just beautiful he was I couldn't even keep track of what was going on.
She knows...
Será que ela sabia?
@@Chambinho4.0 She knows in that part of consciousness that exists without words that she is in the presence of Death itself.
The life spring within us recognizes it's opposite.
The body trembles, mouth dries, the mind retreats from the unknown.
With tremendous strength and kindness, the woman answers the unanswerable:
"I'm afraid.....you're Joe." The first words acknowledge our human inability to face our eventual nonbeing.
The second statement is for the man, accepting what he is and reaffirming her love.
The physical tremor is from the spark within when it recognizes its fragility.... we react like any small creature to a brush with death.
@@OceanSwimmer obrigada pela explicação! ;)
She knows and she loves
Mystical and mysissisim that goes beyond the bounderies that we know. And very soulful 💥💥💥💥💥
Thanks, Sean. No matter how many times I watch it, I can never get enough of Claire Forlani's expressions. A truly amazing character actress!
Amazing film I love all of Brad Pitt's movies it was a sad at the end what can I say it was a joy to watch while on this lockdown he is so handsome 🍀
Thanks, Geraldine. We all love Brad! ❤️
My gosh she’s absolutely stunning. Such a beautiful girl.
Her eyes in this scene is so stunning beautiful and magical and unless your not connected to the spiritual world you definitely wont see what i am seeing
I see it. A truly magnificent scene. An incredibly underrated movie.
This movie is gold
Anything that has a beginning has an ending, to look into the face of death would make you tremble with fear…
1:38 - 1:58 best music. Melts your heart.
Yes, haunting ... literally 😍
In the top five best movies of all time. Based on the idea alone. I don't think any other actors could of pulled this off.
Totally agree with you.
Amazing movie. It's my favorite and this is my favorite scene. I cry every time I watch it
Many of us do, Claudia.
Yes, and when he cries before leaving
Thank you for posting this!
She is stunning in this film she absolutely breaks my heart in this performance!
One of the most beautiful actresses of her time, for sure. And what delivery. She really lived the character 😍
Perfect in every way this film
Absolutely, James.
I've lost count of the number of times I've watched this scene alone, and coming away each time just marveling at the magnificence of it ♥️
Her eyes...! She's got so beautiful eyes! And her lips! She's such a beautiful woman!
Indeed, Juan
I've been a huge fan of Claire Forlani since! 🤩❤️
The comments here are amazing. What an incredible movie. My unsung hero is the score.
I think this is a very underrated movie. Everyone in it played excellent parts, and Brad Pitt nailed his part perfectly.
Had to watch it again after seeing this.
Tell me who underrated it and I'll tear his lungs out...
Such a beautiful man, out of this world
"It doesn't matter what I am, you know who I am"
when YOU HAVE THE POWER TO SEE THROUGH ANYONES EYES... don't be frightened..
I can count on the fingers of one hand movies that have been made in this era that I can include in this films company (additional suggestions welcome !)
Seven pounds
Magnolia
The Sixth Sense
No Country for old men
Lost In Translation
This film will endure. I know it is a retelling of an old story but with a Thomas Newman score as good as this I confess I could pretty much hit the repeat button and sit through another three hours again on any day of the week

@@bollywood_kahani I agree its refreshing to bring in a perspective that is only really understood between the two, maybe 3, plus of course the entire audience but they are not there when acting is done well! We are flies on the wall witnessing a weird love story - not sure if you would call it true love in this context - you can feel her confusion in this scene as if its your own - trying hard not to love him because it hurts to much, & noone else to talk to who would understand.
"Somewhere in time" ..where Christopher Reeves.. transcend time To go back in time to meet live, the actress he meet as an old women..and saw a picture of her from years ago in her youth, her comment
Come back to me is hunting
This movie is a MASTERPIECE! One of greatest of all times!
This is how I know all those acting awards r rigged..how forlani Nd Pitt ddnt win for this film is beyond me.
This is an incredible movie. Totally, totally underrated.
One of the most incredible scenes ever from a movie, in my 50 years of watching
In 1998, this was considered a bad film which blew my mind cause I sat through 2 screenings for 6 hours, and still wanted to see it again.
@@bollywood_kahani It's not underrated, a LOT of people love this movie to this day. But you have to remember, this movie would be totally shit without Brad Pitt. The plot is just too ridiculous to be taken seriously, but Brad Pitt makes it watchable (actually, he makes it infinitely rewatchable too).
@@sleepyskorpion Once again, you've made my day! Proves I'm not alone crazy about him and this movie!!
The music in this film is insanity. Absolutely love it❤
Death is nothing to be afraid of or scared of. On my grandfathers name I swear this. I have been there more times then 1 when I was 3 when I drowned in a cow trough. Again at 17 in a car accident. Don't fear it, if it's truly your time welcome it.
If you drowned in a cow trough you wouldn't be able to comment here unless you had a ressurection!
@stewartcameron1516 nope, I was resuscitated with cpr and medical technology 👍
Always wondered why rarely ever saw her in other films...good actress
i could wake up to those eyes everyday...clairs eyes are unique
Claire Forlani is a celluloid goddess! ❤️
claire's eye acting is phenomenal here
She is absolutely gorgeous! Claire Forlani was certainly overlooked at her peak. I wish she had gotten more movies, as well as an Oscar, to add to her standing. She could have easily run with the best of her era.
Underrated classic, wonderful acting
Totally Dean. It should be easily be Top 3 for 1998.
Beautiful scene...just so sensitive and honest
This woman is beautiful😍😍
