The thing about Scott/Cyclops is that force beams from his eyes are being constantly generated, he can't shut off his power. So whenever his eyes are open, he'd be blasting whatever he's looking at. However there is a special substance (ruby quartz) that neutrailizes his optic beams. That's why he wears a visor or special glasses at all times.

An interesting distinction between the X-Men and the MCU is that almost everyone in the MCU *gains* their powers in some fashion. Captain America was the result of super soldier experimentation, the Hulk accidentally poisoned himself with gamma radiation, Wanda volunteered to be experimented on by Hydra, and so on. In the X-Men the characters are all born with their powers, whether they like them or not. A great bit of writing is that one of the most "put together" characters, Scott/Cyclops, has almost no control over his power and is a force of massive destruction unless he has his visor. Because of this characteristic, the heroes and villains in the X-Men are more human and normal; some of them choose their paths and some of them have no choice.
Also, here's a fun little "blooper" from the original movie:

FUN fact after the x men were created in 1963 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby they gained huge popularity in the black and gay LGBTQ community. Living in a society were they were mistreated and discriminated against black and gay comic book readers saw themselves in the characters through the civil rights and gay rights movement’s.
Seeing what the comic did for the black and gay community the creators of the comics adapted the characters to spread awareness through subtext and show people who weren’t from the minorities what it was like being marginalised.
Marvels first major openly gay character North Star is an x man and and is one half of the first same sex marriage depicted in marvel comics. Professor x and magneto also represent the fight for the Silvio rights movement with Professor X and his vision of harmonious human-mutant coexistence standing in for Dr. Martin Luther King, while Magneto's rigid attitude toward the defence of mutant kind reflected the philosophy of Malcolm X.
Through out the films you’ll see how marvel carried on this tradition with hints and gay coded dialogue through the x mens fight for freedom and equality being a metaphor for what it is like as part of the LGBT community and being gay.

It was more about black people way more than gay people who weren't out In the open in the 60's like they started to be in the 70's . Professor x represented Dr Martin Luther King and magneto represented Malcolm x

It was about both movements, after the civil rights movement in 1954 and the gay liberation movement starting in the 1960s and lasting till the 1980s along with stone wall of 1969 the creators of the comics decided to adapt the x men to represent marginalised people over all, but more specifically gay and black people.
Over time the X-men have become more representative of gay and LGBT rights though, seeing what the characters did for people of the community and how much the creators could subtly correlate being a mutant to being gay specifically.
The mutants having to hide there identity to not scare humans, the humans looking for a cure for being a mutant, the mutants powers being genetic are all metaphors for social issues the creators chose to put in the comics to represent the struggles of the gay community. As he said the first major openly gay character is an x-man and is the first gay marriage in marvel comics.
It’s also why the creators of the movies Cary on what they did and are doing in the comics because LGBT issues and rights are what the x-men as a whole mainly represent now, Bobby parents not knowing he’s a mutant is a metaphor for being gay, him having to tell them in x-men 2 and his mothers response saying have you tried not being a mutant is a metaphor for coming out, rogue thinking she needs the cure and humans wanting a cure for mutants is a metaphor for conversion therapy and people thinking you can cure being gay and so on and so on, so the x men represent both but not long after as the comics progressed the x-men mainly became a metaphor for what its like for the gay and LGBT community and the issues they face.

Adamantium is stronger, but vibranium has the special property of completely cancelling all vibrations when it hits things or things hit it, which is what makes it strong (bullets that hit it lose all kinetic force, not necessarily because the metal is particularly strong). That's how Cap's shield is able to ricochet like it does, it doesn't lose energy when striking objects.

Well, Kevin Fiege (Head of Marvel Studios) planned on crossing over Cap, Hulk and Iron Man with the Xmen universe, but because of legal rights it wasn't meant to be. As you will see down the road, they hint at Wanda and Fox has their own version of Pietro (Quicksilver) but Marvel was allowed to "share" these characters in Avengers Age of Ultron. They (Marvel) were not allowed to mention Mutants so they couldn't reveal that Magneto is the father of Wanda and Pietro............yet.

If you want to see "Gandolf" in a villian role watch him in Apt Pupil. It's a thriller about a high schooler that finds out his neighbor is a Natzi war criminal. The cop who finds the injured security guard( Mystique) is the guy who wrote the movie. Magneto can control magnetic fields which allows him to fly. He has no mind powers. In the 90's marvel comics sold the tv and movie rights to their most popular properties( X-Men, Spiderman and Fantastic Four). So when they started the MCU with Iron Man they couldn't use "mutants" in it. So in Age of Ultron, they could use Wanda but she couldn't be a "mutant". Which is why the Mind Stone was used to create her and Pietro. Fox was using Quicksilver in their movies so they let MCU use him in only 1 movie, but he had to die in it. Disney now owns Fox so the Mutants are slowly getting used and mentioned in the MCU.

The X-Men, a group of superheroes, can be found in American comic books released by Marvel Comics. The team was brought to life by artist/co-writer Jack Kirby and editor/co-writer Stan Lee, making their debut in The X-Men #1 (September 1963). Despite being initially discontinued in 1970 due to poor sales, it experienced a resurgence in 1975 under the guidance of writer Chris Claremont, ultimately becoming one of Marvel Comics' most iconic and prosperous franchises.

When I tell you X-Men was my JAM as a kid...
My uncle had stacks of long boxes, FULL of X-men comics, and every summer I'd find a quiet spot in my grandma's house and just read all day. I watched the cartoons religiously (90s baby so I was lucky enough to be around for both the OG animated series and X-men Evolution).
These live-action movies started coming out when I was 10. I remember being a little underwhelmed by it, even back then, because even though they handle the central concept pretty well, there's SO MUCH they don't show... The X-men franchise's greatest strength is in its characters and their relationships with each other; you read the comics and you're there for the actions/missions, sure, but you're there for the soap opera drama and emotional beats in-between their adventures just as much.
While I think X2 comes the closest to feeling like its source material, the "Singerverse" never quite _gets_ that, imo, but it deserves the fans it has. It helped get the superhero movie genre on its feet and its always cool to look back on to see where it all started. Without them, we never would've gotten Iron Man or any of the MCU. I'm hopeful that if someone with passion for the franchise can get behind the director's chair, the MCU could revitalize it and do things right. At this point, its one of the only properties it has that could bring the MCU back to its former glory...

If and when they ever bring him into the MCU, they should write him some scenes where his personality can really shine. His powers are fairly limited in flexibility. All he can do is shoot very powerful blasts from his eyes. Great as a destructive weapon, but not much use for anything else. Unlike most of the other X-Men: Storm can manipulate weather in many different ways, use the wind to fly, hit people with lightning; Wolverine has his claws, regeneration, and heightened senses; Iceman can encase people in ice, make structures out of ice, use ice to slide along the ground really fast; etc.

The X-Men in the comics exist alongside the Avengers, Fantastic Four etc. Within Marvel's Mainline Universe of Earth-616 since 1939 and later the Marvel era during the 1960s when Stan Lee gave birth to The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, X-Men, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Avengers etc. But during the 1990s Marvel sold there movie rights off with Fox buying the rights to X-Men. Sony got Spider-Man etc. So when the 2000s came by we got a bunch of Marvel films but no connection between. People tried for example Wolverine was planned to cameo in Spider-Man (2002) but this never happened. Then Iron Man (2008) came out and the MCU was born but Fox still owned the rights to X-Men. In a perfect world we would've saw Spider-Man, Fantastic Four and X-Men from the beginning in the MCU.
Fun fact Kevin Feige the now President of Marvel Studios started his producing journey with X-Men, X2, and X-Men: The Last Stand. He was one of the producers who spoke up about wanting the X-Men to be wear more comic accurate outfits to fit with the comics. But this was during a time when Comic Book movies were not very mainstream yet so the big producers thought that having too much comic book designs would scare away the mainstream audience. So they just gave everyone matching Black Leather Suit that strips them of any personality. It took us 24+ years for us to finally see Wolverine in his comic book outfit with the up in coming Deadpool 3 film.

When this movie came out, long long before ANY ideas about the MCU happening, I got sooo pumped. I grew up reading X-Men comics and there were rumors even in the 90's about an X-Men movie being made, so when this came out I was sooo freakin excited. It was so awesome seeing it in the cinema. Absolutely loved it. :)
To maybe help answer some stuff:
Rogue ius played by Anna Paquin in this and she's been in a bunch of stuff. Probably most famous for the movie The Piano when she was much younger. You can look it up.
20:17 - if you look at that scene again, Wolverine takes note of the broken tree. If a tree falls, it normally uproots itself, but this one was deliberately broken, so yeh I think Sabretooth knocked it down to setup the ambush.
33:40 - So Magneto is tuned into the electromagnetic fields around the Earth, so he creates an electromagnetic field around himself to make himself "fly" - he creates a field and floats in his field. He can use the field to push himself around, which is how he flies.
But yeh, so stoked you're watching X-Men movies now. I think my favourite is X-Men 2 which is hopefully next for you guys.

6:59 Anna Paquin is a great actress who won an Oscar for her 1st role in The Piano. She's also been nominated for 5 Golden Globes and won one for True Blood, a TV show she starred in for 7 seasons and 80 episodes. She's also been in many other famous movies, including Almost Famous, Jane Eyre, and The Irishman. She's best known for her True Bloods role, her X-Men character, and being the 2nd youngest ever to win an Oscar.

A Wolverine is a part of the same taxonomic family as weasels and badgers, and are well known for their ferocity and strength disproportionate to their size. They also can be found mostly in the Northern US and Canada. That is why the character's name is Wolverine :P
Yes, Scott (Cyclops) has to wear those special glasses all the time because his eyes are constantly emitting kinetic force beams, only being stopped by his eyelids or by the glasses, made of ruby quartz which reflect the energy harmlessly. The visor he wears on missions lets him focus the beams into a single optic blast, hence Cyclops.
Rogue in the comics ended up fighting Ms. Marvel (the future Captain Marvel) and killed her via her power, which caused her to absorb ALL of her powers permanently, so she can now fly, has super strength, and is invulnerable. These films kind of did Rogue dirty in that this never happens and she stays as just a power vampire.
Storm is one of the most powerful mutants alive, able to control the weather on a global scale when she really gets her dander up.
Charles Xavier is known as Professor X, and is also extremely powerful. He and Magneto are, well, frenemies, because they used to work together to further mutant rights before Magneto took on his mutant supremacy bent. Magneto is something of an anti-villain, in that his goals are noble, but his methods are very questionable at best.

She's been in quite a few things. but the most likely place you'd have seen Anna Paquin before would be as Sookie in True Blood. And the astonishing answer to how many Oscars Sir Ian McKellen has won is...zero; though he's been nominated twice. He was mainly a stage, TV and Shakespearean film actor until late in his career though so whilst his major film roles are huge in pop culture they don't represent a significant portion of his acting career.

The guy that played Toad, Ray Park, was also the physical actor for Darth Maul(meaning he was in the make up/on screen and did the stunts) in Star Wars Episode 1. In the comics. Considering Peter's mutation. Him and Magneto once bump heads when he tried to hunt him/recruit him. He's pro human so he would be on Charles' side when the x-men have civil wars.
Which is on a side note why he isn't worthy cause he would still not kill his enemies which is why unlike Peter, steve is a soldier like logan and were buds in the 40's or in the present.

Also to see how someone either lets that prejudice and hate change them for the worse or rise above and continue to make the right choices and do the heroic deeds.

Magneto can fly by creating a personal magnetic field around himself like a force field that he can control at will. It can ataches itself to Earth's own magnetic field as well making it possible for him to travel trought it's lines. He also has his costume made with metalic fiber mixed with the fabric. This force field like his powers are invisible to the human eye but in the comics the artist draw it like a purple eletric/magnetic type of energy to be more visually striking and for the reader to be able to understand when he's using it.

I still remember when I was 10 years old (1996), and my Dad was reading the paper and he said "hey come look at this" and there was a small article about Fox making a live action X-Men movie. I lost my shit lol. So 4 years later this came out and I went with my Dad to the theaters to see it. At the time I was a LITTLE disappointed, it's not as dark and gritty as the comics can get, and they focused too much on Wolverine while everyone else is relegated to side characters, and it has that Pre-MCU "super hero movie will never be cool" vibe to it. But this movie really kick started the superhero movie craze (technically Blade came first in 1998, but this is the one that really turned heads), and I look back on it fondly now.

This movie was a lot of hype for us Marvel fans that had never had a successful "proper" superhero film. (I am not counting the Blade trilogy, I didn't even know it was Marvel when my my wife and I walked into that theater) DC had already had three decades of hit and miss movies with the Superman and the Batman series of films.
My only real problem with this film from a comic book standpoint is at the grand finale when Wolverine saves Rogue by giving her his regeneration powers, why did the old injuries suddenly reappear? That isn't how healing works. One you're healed from an injury, that's it. So taking his healing factor away should just mean he won't heal from new injuries.
As an example, if you decided to put out a campfire with a fire extinguisher and then you indeed do put it completely out, then I come take away your fire extinguisher, the campfire doesn't re-light itself. Still the movie was a total win and I realize they had to do something to *show* that she was absorbing his abilities and it was potentially dangerous to Logan.

One of the best comic book movies ever, in my opinion because it is the best showcase of how the X-Men character’s personalities really are in the comic books. Edit: The only personality that wasn’t quite right in the movie is Rogue/Marie. Rogue is actually very independent and tough and she’s only really vulnerable with Wolverine and later on Gambit, her future husband, but that’s many, MANY comic book issues later. But man, do they carry on this very involved passionate relationship.
A very cool Avengers related fact from this universe is that Magneto is Scarlett Witch’s father, so Quicksilver her brother is his son as well. Magneto had a LOT of affairs with both mutant and human women over the years, so he has quite a few kids wandering around in this universe.
He is a Holocaust survivor and he lost his entire family in Auschwitz. The only reason Eric was spared was because the Nazis were fascinated by his mutant ability to manipulate any form of metal, and it is later on that Apocalypse, (an ancient bad ass villain you will meet in a later movie), enhances these powers to be able to tap into the very magnetosphere of the entire planet if the mood takes him. He has a daughter called Polaris who shares his powers, but I forget what else she can do.

  • @paulkondon
    @paulkondon 8 месяцев назад

My favorite X-Man is Cyclops. He has a great power, but needs the visor to control it. Because it's very limited in its use - blasting things - his real value to the group is as the leader. One of the great things about Marvel characters is that no one can do everything, and they work better as a group. And in that group, there needs to be someone to coordinate them, and know whose powers are best in which situation. He showcases that at the end, telling Storm to lift Logan, but knowing her wind isn't very precise, Jean needs to steady him. Logan goes up being great at close quarters and difficult to hurt, but Scott is there as the last resort to blast everything if all else fails. That's always the key puzzle to solve in every story, and the most powerful characters might not be the one who can get the job done. The same way that Black Widow and Hawkeye continue to prove their worth when there is Iron Man, Thor and the Hulk. And Cyclops is like the Captain America of the X-Man, keeping everyone organized and on mission. He can sometimes seem sullen and moody as a result, because he feels he has to live up to the expectations Charles placed on him. While Charles was comatose, Scott tells him something of this, where he will take care of the X-Men if needed - knowing full well he can't fill Charles' shoes.
