The hammer joke will never get old--really! As to lights, best thing I ever did in my shop was to switch from fluorescent tubes to direct-wire LED tubes. No more ballasts, no more burned out bulbs. Three years in and not a single tube out of the 64 I replaced has gone bad. And don't get me going on the friggin ballasts.
On your future videos, you could possibly adjust the White Balance on your camera/phone to help the “hot spots” on your video. LED bulbs to replace the fluorescent ones wouldn’t hurt. BTW...Love your Craftsmanship & your videos!!
Photographer here....the lights are not too bright, you will just have to adjust the exposure so that the surface of the work does not blow out. I made a separate comment above with more detail. No such thing as too bright, just need to adjust for it.
Yes a little washed out but honestly it's your work shop. Use lighting that helps you get the job done. Shoes are your business not RUclips! We're just along for the ride. If anything needs changing..... Bigger hammer more hammer time and no warnings. Gotta love those earphone wearing cry babies lol
Man, I hope the guy did not pay too much for those shoes as none of the leather looks of any sort of quality. But with your new soles and care I’m sure he has ended up with a much longer lasting and supportive shoe! With plates of meat that size he needs all the support he can get for them!
Was watching an interesting upload on a prestigious channel about making shoes - a pair. I could follow what the person was doing - from watching your channel. (I was so smug!) No details as the shoe was being built, steps not recorded and then wha-la! finished shoes. So appreciate your craftsmanship and the time you take to explain what you are doing. Good shoes versus not so good shoes. Blake stitches, channels, piping, leather, paper, shanks, insoles, lasts, Goodyear stitching. And the best word: Hammertime! WOW! have I got a vocabulary now! Thanks!
When I was in high school, I worked at the Bata Shoes outlet store, at the factory in Belcamp, Md. We had a pair of John Wooden basketball shoes in a size 23!

Steve, the lighting is great, but I'm not picky. As long as the lights stay florescent & don't make you hot they're o.k. by me. Great work on these BIG PUPPIES!!! Wow! You did a great job & I'm sure the customer will be very happy with them! Oh, I do miss the smell of "the shoe man's" shop my Dad took me to several times in the 1960's. My Dad had a desk job & had to take care of his dress shoes! The good old days!! Steve, thanks for sharing your work with us! Take care and God Bless.
It is very common for companies to ask bloggers to review their products. They respect your integrity and want your honest opinion of their product. There is generally no payment involved because they don't want to bribe you to say only positive things. They want an honest review from a respected source. I understand that it takes time away from your business but it would be very interesting for your viewers and it cements your reputation as an expert who can be trusted because you are so knowledgeable.
I think the biggest benefit to you would probably just be having a free pair of shoes and a video that might generate some views. I know that Trenton and Heath (another cobbler RUclips channel) has reviewed Beckett Simonon, Thursday Boot, and a few others. The shoes themselves cost around $200 a pop so there is some value to the reviewer but if you don’t like the shoes it definitely wouldn’t be worth the while.
This reply and the others that follow it don't understand that Steve's priority isn't RUclips. These shoe companies weren't even offering to pay customer rates for the work. It makes 0 sense for Steve to do it. If you're interested in breaking down shoes and critiquing the quality, there's a great youtuber named Rose Anvil that does this kind of work. The offer they provided to Steve would make much more sense with a channel like rose anvil.
Your experiences remind me a lot of my time working retail in a couple different areas. Yes, the customer is always right and can get whatever they're willing to pay for, but I'd often think the equivalent of at least live a little with the ________ thing you're asking me to replace even though brand new and unblemished. Great work anyway!
Keeps getting better and better...man I can't wait to send you my cowboy boots when they need to be resold..love your craftsmanship and the no cutting corners..absolutely love to watch you work your magic!
Good to see Mr Hammer starring centre stage (in fact, inspired by him I ordered a similar hammer from eBay; sorry to say, it did not have the rakish lines and patina of Mr H)).
Jeez Louise! The last time I saw shoes that big the guy was wearing a big, red rubber nose. You’re a master with that tack hammer. Shoot, I can barely get a nail in the wall to hang a picture. Cool beard, Steve. Thanks for the vid.
Steve you could actually have a t.v. show! The whole time you're working you're keeping us in tune to what's going on. You keep the videos full with no dead spots....I enjoy your channel friend!
As with all things made in this world, some things are made to sell and others made to last. Quality products is what people expect and want yet rarely get. Spill the beans on 'em Steve!
Amazing remake of shoes that were obviously substandard, with regard to the original soles and heels... wow, only three nails holding the heel blocks on... your work is truly commendable! I wish I were closer, so I could have you work on some of my shoes... (not size 18)...
Back in the 60's when people brought their shoes to a cobbler to have their shoes repaired I remember the neighborhood cobbler's motto on his store front "I'm no preacher, but I can save your soul." Sadly to say that the cobbler is no longer around. Great video and Man those are "BIG" Shoes. I think you just found "Big Foot".
The thought that crossed my mind watching you work on those behemoth shoes : reminds me of the Tiny Shoe Elves in the old cartoons working on normal human size shoes.
I wear a size 18 or 19 depending on the shoe. I, myself, am 6 ft 9 and about 300 lbs. Shoes are MUCH easier to find now because of the internet (Zappos, Oddball, Friedmans, 2 big feet, eBay, amazon, etc), but yeah, it's hard to find exactly what you want sometimes. Not sure why, but there's a huge gap in the shoes you can find in 18s and 19s. 19s are like hens teeth. I know a lot of people don't wear that big of a shoe, but the difference in just one size up is pretty remarkable. Used to only find basketball shoes in my size, but it's gotten much better, selection-wise. I have some custom made shoes, but most are store-bought, now.
Does anyone else have trouble seeing the shoes from the lighting/overexposure? All I see is white anytime the shoe is flipped over. Are there settings in the iPhone that would dial the hot spots from the lighting back? I knew there is only so much that can be done with florescent lighting. Love the video - just wish I could see more of it.
Yeah, I'm not sure about which phone he's using these days but it appears as if it has a hard time setting the exposure correctly. It's probably because of the lighting like you said.
It is definitely the lighting and the lighting setting on the phone. When Steve stands at certain machines or different locations where the lighting is behind him, the picture is darker and easier to see.
I cannot fathom the cost of that JR bend.... beautiful work as always! I'm sure these peculiarly _larger_ projects help to make your day less monotonous (not to say it is though).
Love that hammer time. I watched a video of a master Craftsman hand making a pair of shoes and there was LOTS of major hammer time going on. It's all part of the job!
I wear 13.5 6E. I'm very limited in selection, and I've had two pairs custom made. I've always imagined waking into a store and just picking out shoes I like. What a luxury.

I'v e got 2 pairs of shoes I'd love to send in to you one day but will have to wait a while for the Oz dollar to recover first though. Now waiting patiently for more hammer time!!

Size 17 here! Regular dress shoes are easy to find (Internet). There are some expensive shoe custom sites (one in Atlanta that goes up to 18 or 20, the name escapes me right now), I can't buy any because I'm broke, lol. #Hammertime
Not sure if it was said below in other comments, but maybe.... You could build his next pair... I liked this one. Mr. Big Foot has two nice pair of shoes. You asked for feedback on lighting/glare. I think there is a lot of glare off of the shoe you are working on so much that it is hard to see the details. The camera seems to be adjusting itself for the front of your work apron, which exposes perfectly, but overexposes the shoe, which is the part that I'm interested in. Hope that helps
Another great job! You asked about the lighting. Someone who knows more about lighting than me might know if a change in angle would give you great light to work with and not white-out the camera. Another way to get the best lighting for you as you work but not be too bright for the camera might be using some type of filter on the camera.
I’ve never had a problem with the lighting. It’s not usually a priority on my list when I’m watching your videos. I’m more interested on the repair than I am with how bright your lights are. I think some people need to realize you own a cobbler shop and not a movie studio.
Great job. New light washing out parts of video. This customer probably ordered the shoe by a catalog not being able to see or feel the quality. I have a large size shoe and I have to order them I pay big bucks and get poor quality . Tall and large people never can get anything nice or fit properly off the rack.
Steve you gotta finish that shoe you built so you can wear them around. Great story. Give that shoe a twin. $760, you could buy some amazing AEs I would think in size 18 for that! You gotta start a Steve’s Apprentice program.
Crazy question Steve, what kind of glue to you use? My pet hate with new shoes is the heel squeezing when I wash. I've one pair that with each step I was sure the heel was going to pop off. I never felt confident in them. My work shoes were so comfy but my out of uniform shoes always had great heels 😁
Bedo's Leatherworks LLC thanks Steve, I needed something that would bond leather to a heavy interfacing when making my bags. I’m moving from just using fabric to using leather too 😬
Just wondering Mr. Bedo, what shoes are you wearing, they look comfortable. I am a nurse and stand on my feet most of the day so I figure you must have something wonderful to protect your feet. Love the videos.
I love when you say "Hammer time". The light it's nice maybe a bit too direct, you would need something to diffuse it just a little bit like an opaque glass or something.
Hey Steve now you know how to repair a leather canoe...lets continue

All that shoe needed was a Trolling Motor.😂

The hammer joke will never get old--really! As to lights, best thing I ever did in my shop was to switch from fluorescent tubes to direct-wire LED tubes. No more ballasts, no more burned out bulbs. It's pretty clear now. To do size 18 shoes you need an anvil and a power hammer.

Bedo's Leatherworks LLC thanks Steve, I needed something that would bond leather to a heavy interfacing when making my bags. I’m moving from just using fabric to using leather too 😬

Lighting is great. Thanks.
Love the water skis.
I think the lights have a little too much glare. How many times have you smashed your left thumb?
Just curious why sometimes you stitch all the way around the heel area on the sole and other times, like this one, you don't stitch the heel area?
Surprise u didnt add the JR brand on the sole. I thought i saw u do it before. Maybe not..Great work!

Just wondering Mr. Bedo, what shoes are you wearing, they look comfortable. I am a nurse and stand on my feet most of the day so I figure you must have something wonderful to protect your feet. Love the videos.

Another great job......great BIG job. !!
I love when you say "Hammer time". The light it's nice maybe a bit too direct, you would need something to diffuse it just a little bit like an opaque glass or something.
hi steve the lighting is just fine.
