  • This comic is full of air! No, seriously, there's a lot of air in this comic.

    Love that song. And it really has nothing to do with this episode aside from the tagline of the series and just... well, like with a lot of these older ones, there's not much to say here.
    That being said, there's an advertisement for Revolution of the Mask at the end of this that's... a bit out of date, mainly because Brain Scan Comics seem to have either folded or just aren't promoting anything anymore. Either way, even this many years later I'm working on the book and even today was scripting the fifth issue. In fact, issues 3 and 4 ARE completed, I just need to find time to upload them somewhere for both digital download and for printing, since there's enough of a demand for them in print form (though lord knows why - after this many years, I'd like to think I'm a DECENT writer, but I don't think I'm up to snuff for people to want a physical copy of this thing). Still, that'll get put up eventually.
    But that's neither here nor there - this is about Air Raiders! ...And Air Raiders is not very interesting. It's a failed toyline that, as far as I know, hasn't been revived, and it had a few tie-ins like the comic that were just really silly because of their need to put the word "air" in front of everything because, well, Air Raiders.
    Air is still a stupid commodity to use as a means of controlling the population when it's clear everyone can breathe just fine. Then again, any dictatorship that requires continually brow-beating the public and making them weak and sickly is a pretty crappy system as it is. How are they going to obey your commands if you keep needing to cut back their supplies and ability to live to the point where they're simply physically unable to do what you order them to do. To tie this back into Revolution of the Mask, to create a stable dystopian environment without rebellion, you need to brainwash people and remove their ability to believe there is any way for a better existence, not just withhold their ability to breathe. Buuut that's just how I see it.

    This could actually be quite interesting if you replace 'air' with 'oxygen', make the world super barren, and made everyone wear masks. Perhaps fill the atmosphere with heavier elements that would force any released oxygen up into the stratosphere to make it more finite.
    The air mines are actually ice mines sense ice can be converted to water and oxygen.

      But that would be too much research for the writers.

    Kind of confusing to me that their interpretation of the title air raiders was that they are raiders of air instead of the more logical raiders from the air.

    For anyone who cares here's the origin of Swashbuckling.
    To swash is to strike with a sword to make a loud aggressive noise .
    A buckler is a small shield that pirates would use because they would need to fight below the decks where it was cramped.
    So a swashbuckler is somebody who strikes his shield with his sword to intimidate his opponent.

      Well, bucklers aren't really a pirate thing. They first developed for cavalry, then for dueling in the 16th century.

    NO ONE HOARDS AIR LIKE GASTON!
    Dune was dignified compared to this.
    I have to say, this comes up short compared to Dino Riders and Brute Force.

    The sad thing is, Air Raiders could have been pretty cool as a setting if they hadn't made air be a resource within it. Instead, just make it a world where all of the land is floating continents, like the Kingdom of Zeal in Chrono Trigger or that floating island in James Cameron's Avatar, and then it makes sense that the emphasis is on cool flying vehicles, as that would be the only way to traverse the continents.

    That's actually a good question, how does one mine or farm air? Do they force prisoners to turn a wheel to give power to a windmill a la Conan the Barbarian? Seriously, what the heck?!

    • @Mazaroth
      @Mazaroth 4 года назад +2

      Maybe they'll just mine some oxygen rich ore and process it?
      Or even better solution would just to electrolyze water, to produce hydrogen and oxygen gas, i mean water is just the most abundant molecule after H2 in the universe, just mine some comets or asteroids for ice, melt it and run electricity through it.
      And farming air would just be a byproduct of agriculture.

    I personally think that they're is no bad ideas just bad executions. This could work with simple changes like the Great Disaster messing up the atmosphere and the Tyrants of Wind keeping the people in line by threatening to pump out the clean air for instants.

    • @DeadMech1
      @DeadMech1 5 лет назад +2

      I agree. With just a little effort someone could rewrite this to be something that would be entertaining for at least some audience. I'm picturing some far off set of star colonies. Airlandia (which maybe needs a new name) was the place the settlers were harvesting oxygen from in order to terraform the various other worlds which lacked it. That is until the disaster poisoned the atmosphere leaving the populous, refugees from an asteroid impacted Earth, to slave away for the tyrants who rose in the tumultuous times. They work long hours in plants breaking oxygen loose from it's atomic bonds in mined up ores or running finicky jury-rigged filtration plants scrubbing carbon out of their decaying domed cities always teetering on the edge of extinction, all under the brutal taxation of incompetent and cruel nobles and the nepotism fueled legions of jack booted thugs they command. It's up to the Air Raiders(tm) to fight for this world's future before it's too late and humanity has it's final gasping breath.

    In case anyone is curious about the toys, they were kind of generic but they were cheap and scaled to match the much better Starcom and Wheeled Warrior toys, the former of which were awesome but expensive, and the latter of which had terrible figures but awesome vehicles. Good times.

  • @neorenamon

    Well, with just *a little more thought* things could have made sense.
    Air Mining: There's a number of compounds that have air bound into it, like rust (iron oxide), silica (silicon dioxide), and numerous others. This leads to...
    Air Refining: They could be related to the process of separating the air from ore, or it could just be some kind of filtration plant to pull out pollutants leaving more oxygen behind.
    Air Masks?: Well the dome is probably sealed pretty well and it would be easier in the long run just to oxygenate the whole dome rather than have everyone with air tanks that need to be recharged from air stations every few hours. However, perhaps the air pressure or oxygen levels are low enough to make some people sick, and there are some meds to deal with lower oxygen content (like at high altitudes).
    But this was a cheap comic made for 'little kids', so the lazy dick writers felt no need for any consistency.

    With Hook constantly going 'hm', it could be because he's talking while fighting. Instead of a long speech between when someone starts a fight and when someone actually throws the first punch, the writer is showing that Hook's fighting by having him go 'hm' (although I would have chosen a different grunting noise than 'hm'). Then again, Rokk seems to be fighting as well but doesn't have any sound effect, so I could be wrong
