Eric! You sir are an absolute legend and saved me and my son a roll of FP4+ that we'd rewound into the canister and being on holiday I didn't have my leader retriever with me.
Thank you very much. *
I’m very happy that you found my content useful. Cheers!
Literally the most simple and comprehensive explanation I’ve seen thank you so much
Thank you Eric. Saved me a roll of Tri-X and no need for a retriever tool. 😊😊😊
I’m glad I could help!
36 year pro, never saw this !!!!!! You can learn something new everyday , Grazie !
Wow. I've been shooting film since the mid 80s, and I've never seen this. Great tip.
Same here!
Had a roll of kodak portra 400 sitting on my bedside table for two weeks because I couldn't get the leader out with a film retrieval tool. Tried your technique, worked first time, I'm over the moon, thank you so much 🙂
***BOOM*** Tried it and it worked the first time. Thanks brother.
Great to hear!
DUDE! You’re a fucking film angel! I still have over half a roll of Portra 400 that I thought was never going to see the LIGHT of day. Yes, I’m proud of that joke.
😂😂😂
I screamed when this worked AHHH thank you!! just saved me 36 shots
You saved me a roll of film :) - tried swapping film between two cameras but accidentally rewound too fast and lost the leader, this worked a charm! Thank you
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I'm working on a double exposure project and I overwound my film. I had a mini heart attack. This so appreciated!
You’re welcome.
I miss loaded my OM-1 a few days a go causing me to rewind an unexposed roll of film, though it was wasted. Googled "retrieving film leader" this video was the first thing that came up, your technique worked a charm.
Thank you very much
I’m glad it was helpful!
Simplest and most effective! I got so emotional when I saw the film came out. Thank you I’ve been doing this for 30 mins. and I have a trip later. 😂 whooo!
That’s awesome! Congratulations and have fun with it. That’s what it’s all about at the end of the day.
Great tip, but remember to hold on to a part of the new film while using it to pull the old film from its canister. Don’t just pull on the new canister. I ended up unwinding (and exposing) half of the new film trying to salvage a couple of frames from the old roll. Got the tip out eventually!
I did the same but thankfully I realised what was happening after your comment so thank you for that!
Really should’ve read this comment earlier 😭
You sir are a magician. A gentleman and a scholar. Thank you.
Lol, thanks
50 years ago my dad used to do the same trick, but could I remember how until now? Love your videos.
Thanks so much
Fantastic! practical real world solution to a common problem. Thanks a million Eric Just done 12 rolls of film using this method 1 failed saved me 15 euro buying a film retriever. Got the hang of it after a couple of rolls.Brillant!
Thanks was messing about over an hour with it until I googled and found this solved instantly
That’s great to hear!
Thank you so much for your tip!! It saved my life, super effective but of course I was too excited when the film rolled out that I put it immediately and didn't read last tip about not putting wet end inside, I hope it won't cause much damadge
How cool is that?! Just tried it, and with a bit of jiggling the ‘used’ film around, it worked!!!
watching this video in 2024 and it helped so much! thank you 😊
This saved my butt! (and my film). Thank you!
Tnx a lot! it worked after some tires, *tips* if the film grabs the other one but doesn't come with when you pull, twist it 20degrees as if spoling it up (for each pull try) and try again until the end of the roll is in the right position inside the canister.
Thank you so much 🥺 I even bought the film retriever and it didn't work, almost gave up until I found your video and it worked!!
Good to hear!
Absolutely brilliant! Thank you!!
You can use a developed roll too, helpful video!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! tried so many methods but only yours worked!
Good to hear that, Thanks!
You beauty! Had a roll of lomochrome purple that had retracted back into the canister a year ago that was resistant to my lead extractor tool. This worked first time! Glad to be able to finally shoot with this stuff
Good to hear!
it worked thank you!! but i pulled so hard that i accidentally unrolled the new film wayyy too far 🤣 remember to hold that spooly thing omg
Lol, sorry to hear that!
Nice tip, thanks, gotta try this some day! I have point and shoot camera as my second camera what rewinds the film that it goes totally inside the canister and I just used lots of force with pliers on dark bag and broke the canister and took the film out. This methods seems much better :D Maybe I load a film to that camera and test the roll to see how this works :)
This totally worked and saved my ass. Many thanks!
I’m glad. Thanks
Wow. I'm speechless. This worked first time. You're a lifesaver. Now please don't ask me how I managed to roll my Portra 800 back into the cassette.
Did this and it worked! I may have pulled out bit but it’s better than not using any at all! Tytyty!
I’m glad it worked for you!
OMG... that’s terrific! Just watched your informative video on the Nikon N8008s and was disappointed that the camera self winds for this exact reason. Now I don’t have to worry about it... thanks again!
Glad it was helpful!
I AM AMAZED AND DUMBFOUNDED
Haha thanks!
Took me a couple of tries, but was finally able to do it, Thanks!
the edge of mine was folded but it worked after a few tries. thanks man!
This saves me $12 for a film retriever. Thanks!
genius! Worked first time
Wow! Great Tip, worked second time!! My poor Canon died mid-roll, but I get to test the new Yashica with the second half :) Tried a different method in the past and it didn't work.. This is so easy!
I’m glad it worked for you. Thanks!
Amazing. Had a roll of 800 tungsten that did not like my picker. This worked first try lol.
You are a hero how easy is that, thank you.
Happy to help!
You're a life saver mate, i was worried to lose my first roll ever hahahaha
Glad I could help
Great tip! Sadly two days after I already got myself a film retriever tool :) But good to know this trick anyway.
Thank you so much !! Literal life saver
Good evening, Eric!
I had to use that tip today. Went out to shoot a roll of Ilford Pan F today. Despite the Canon FTb having a quick load system, one can still have it not catch the leader right. The rewind knob was not turning so I went to rewind a tiny bit into the canister to do it again. As luck would have it, I did not notice the leader pulling free of the takeup spool (maybe it never caught) and rewound into the canister. Anyway, I had a second roll of a different speed in case I wanted to shoot that. So I opened that roll and did what you showed us. Worked great!
Thank you so much! This is a good reason also to carry a second roll of film with us at all times! :)
Hah, thanks for sharing. Keep shooting film!
Definitely!!! 👍🏻
Forgot to add that next month will be 30 years since I bought my first SLR, a Canon EOS 620 and a 50mm 1.8. I’ve already got a roll of Ektar 100 for it as it is the closest to what I used back then, Eastman 5247 and Ektar 125. It’ll be just with the 50; my L glass and the tele are staying home.
Took a few attempts but worked eventually. Thanks for this!
Glad it helped!
you’re a film saver man! thanks a lot for this explanation
Thank you for this, its saved my film a couple times
You're such a mad scientist LOL thanks
Hah, you know it!
Lifesaver! Thank you so much!
Literally saved 24 exposures I thought that cartridge was a gonner thank you
You’re welcome! I’m glad it was helpful
Thanks so much for this valuable tip! I just saved two rolls of film. Much appreciated, as also other great videos from you.
I’m glad it was helpful.
Thank you! What a great tip, lifesaver with my new PS that’s unpredictable with the loading/auto rewind.
Glad it helped!
That's really great! Works with developed film too. Use the tip and out it goes!
Hey thanks, my leader retriever wouldn’t work to save my life and this worked after a few tries👍🏼
Glad you found it helpful.
Worked a treat, Thanks.!
You're welcome!
This saved, and will probably go on saving lives...! :")
Wow! How cool is that? I had a little metal clip that I could slide in & pull it out. I was forever mis placing it.
It worked! Thank you!!
Incredibly helpful and great explanation!! You Sir just saved my Kodak 800!
Thanks! I’m glad to be of service. 😀
what a great tip thanks!!
Awesome tip - better than the pincher sold by BH
I just accidentally rewound a roll all the way back into the canister and you saved me from a blank roll
Omg, that was SO EASY! Thank you so much!
Glad it helped!
Saved my life ❤❤❤
Great tip, worked amazingly well
You're pretty scary there! This cool trick, and the fact you like the same cameras I do!
Great minds think alike!
Thanks 😊
Genius! Thank you
Glad it helped!
that works slick wow thanks
Amazing tips, after much trying I did it!!
I just tried this, but instead of the “inside” film coming back out, the “helper” film pulled out of its canister about 8 inches. Haha If you do this, hang on to the helper film. I did finally manage to get the film retrieved. Thanks for the video.
Ouch! Sorry to hear that
you're a life saver. tysm
Magic! Thank you
You bet!
Yep, that works! Cheers :)
Awesome tip - thank you!
Thanks, awesome tip! Took a couple of goes but I got it. Saved a roll for me.
Brilliant !
That worked! Awesome. Thank you.

You’re welcome. I’m glad you found it useful.
Wow, what an amazing trick, it really works :) Thanks!
Got the answer! thanks
Wow! Nifty trick! Thanks!
👍saved the day!
Genius!
Worked perfectly, thank you :)
Glad to hear it!
Good idea but first try it's not working for me. Maybe I put to much water and was too wet. And I'm using a squared cut piece of film from a 30m. long roll.
Make sure it’s wet emulsion side on the top shiny side. It works for me every time.
@@FilmPhotographyChannel i will re watch your video carefully. Thanks
Wow! That's super handy. Thanks!
It worked! Thanks! Magic! 😎
Brilliant
Never knew this.......Great tip!
Works perfectly, thanks!!
Bro... magic.
Lol
Amazing thank you
No problem 😊
