How to EASILY Retrieve a Film Leader End from 35mm Canister in 3 Different Ways

In this video I demonstrate three different ways how to retrieve or get the leader end back out of your roll of 35mm film canister that has been rewound back in to the canister. In all cases, you're going fishing!
The 3 methods shown in the video are:
1. Using a "film picker" or "leader retriever" tool
2. How to use double sided tape
3. How to use a wet a negative strip
-
Sequence for each method:
0:40 Using a retriever tool
1. Hold the retriever so the smaller flexible tongue is on top
2. Slide the large back tongue into the canister
3. Slide the top smaller tongue in, but in the retracted position
4. (Make sure the rigid back shoulder overlaps the canister)
5. Hold the roll to your ear and spin CCW until you hear a click
6. Keep tension on the spool at that point
7. Release the tension as you slowly pull the leader out
2:17 Using double-sided tape
1. Take an old flat negative a few inches long
2. Cut a section of tape and place it at one end of the negative
3. Insert the negative tape side into the canister (about 1")
4. Slowly roll the inner spool CCW until it pulls the strip in
5. Keep tension on the spool at that point
6. Release the tension as you slowly pull the leader out
4:47 Using a wet negative
1. Take an old flat negative a few inches long
2. Lick or wet one end of the negative
3. Insert the negative tape side into the canister (about 1")
4. Slowly roll the inner spool CCW until it pulls the strip in
5. Keep tension on the spool at that point
6. Release the tension as you slowly pull the leader out
Things to watch out for:
If you use the 'wet negative' method, use a different section for a new roll. (I just cut back the wet slobbered-on part to a dry area).
Don't use thick double-sided tape, but instead a thinner scotch tape or "Frost King" window sealing tape works well.
Happy fishing!

Hi there. I'm Chris. Film is more fun is a place where I share about whatever busted up old camera I'm currently shooting and tinkering with, or my meanderings in film photography. It would be pretty rad if you said what's up. I'm 99% friendly. Definitely do that. Disclaimer: If you want technical proficiency go watch 'The Art of Photography' (love that show). These videos are more like an elderly person navigating a tv clicker.

hey. just wanted to say videos like this help me to no end. you just inspired me to finish off my 300$ film developing spree, im very exited to start shooting my rollei cameras! this was very valuable, please keep making videos man your building a generation of film photographers.
Hey thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you found the video helpful. . Have fun with your Rollei 🙂
Lol, just spent 15 mins with the lass at my local shop with a Kaiser film retriever to no avail. Turns out we were using it upside down! You sir, have earned a thumbs up ;-)
Hey, glad you got it to work!
Thank you my friend! For me even the film picker was not working so I put a double sided tape on film picker and it worked. Basically combined 2 methods you mentioned. Thanks again !
I'm glad it was helpful 😀
I am new to the hobby so when my camera rewind knob wasn’t turning, I didn’t notice anything wrong. Then when my film was done rewinding in one second that’s when I knew I’d messed up. Thanks for this video. Saved me a roll.
Glad it was helpful!
I have one of those Kaiser retrievers. Just tried to use it about 30 times with no luck. The lick-the-film method worked first time. Thank you!
Yeah that Kaiser can be frustrating sometimes haha. Glad the tape worked for you.
Thank you for showing how the two-tongued versions work. Tried following the more conmon tutorials for the three-tongue versions hoping it was similar - it is similar, but it’s also really not!😂😅 Works a charm, now.😃 Thank you again.

I've watched hundreds and hundreds of videos about film leader retreiving, but this actually worked! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
SandroMaster Music That's really awesome to hear, thanks for letting me know! 😀
We have watched so many videos but this one was to the point. The point that you need to lock the film canister in that location was the key takeaway. Kudos.
Many many thanks for making this informative video.
You're welcome I'm glad to hear that you found it helpful
I'd been having no luck/skill with my film picker with Portra films -- the tape and leader tip worked immediately. Thanks for this how to!
I'm glad that it worked for you! 🙂
i had one film roll left and my class final is due today, and I got stuck. thank you, you are a lifesaver.
Sounds like you had to work under pressure haha. Glad it was helpful! 🙂
No tool, no tape, but the lickity-splickity worked!!!!! HUZAAAAHH, almost wasted a roll of expired cvs film from 2012 to a busted ebay find. Thanks soooooo much!
Awesome! Glad the vid was helpful 🙂
The best advice I ever got !!! I mean, the tongue ! Saved me $15
I'm glad it was helpful! 🙂
I’ve tried to get the Kaiser film leader puller to wok for six months. Watched your video and bang. It works every time! thank you for saving me from breaking every roll!
No problem! I'm glad it was helpful 🙂
After wasting an hour of trying other methods using the double sided tape worked for me, thanks for sharing dude.
Hey no prob! Glad it worked out for you 🙂
Thank you so much!! My camera automatically retracted my unused film into the cartridge and I thought I was screwed you’re a life saver!!
Awesome! You're very welcome 🙂
I have seen a few videos about how to use a film retriever, none of them are any good. Following your instructions I did it in one go. Excellent! Thank you!
You're welcome! 🙂
You explained using the film picker much better then some other channels, following you I got it first time :)
Thanks. I'm glad i the video was helpful 🙂
Spit did it!!!
You're a life saver and this is indeed a life lesson.
Thank you for sharing. Hurra!
Hurra! 🙂 Hey you're welcome, and I'm glad it worked for you!
Still waiting on a Kaiser that I ordered and running out of time I decided to try your sticky tape idea. It took my two tries but it worked! I will make sure to keep some developed leaders around for backup now. Great tip.
That cheering sound was fantastic haha!
🙂
the lick method is a life saver omg!!! thank you😭😭😭😭😭
Awesome!! You're welcome 🙂
true about reusing the negative, it works best the first time!
The lick it trick worked , didn't need to buy a thing. Thanks for a savings!!
Easton Plourde No prob! 😀
Useful photo tips, clear and not boring but fun! The 3rd method is real life "on field" method. We have a real taste of film too :-)
Thanks!
I licked it the first time because I didn't have double-sided tape, but this time around I had the tape. Both worked great! Thank you!!!
Awesome! 🙂
Sticky Tape actually Works!!! Thanks
You're welcome 🙂
The spit one actually saved me!! Thank you so much!!
Great! 🙂
Very good instructions, saved me buying a film extractor. Thanks.
Great!
OMG didn’t expect the lick method really works 🤣🥺
Yeah, it's the easiest in my opinion! I use it all the time. 🙂
The tape method (w regular double-sided tape) worked better than the leader retriever I just bought /eyeroll One thing I might try is to trim the sprocket holes right at the end so you can get the leader you're inserting into the light trap a little more easily. Thanks for sharing this.
No prob! 🙂
Great! Saves using the can opener in the dark.
Lick method worked for me - used a old roll of film that I've been practicing loading my Paterson reels with. Thank you!!
You're welcome 👍
Tape on a negative. Stuck it into a roll of Cinestill 800 that accidentally got pushed back. Retrieved on the second try. I also have a date today for the first time in 10 years. So yeah, you saved me. Thank you, buddy!
Hell yeah! Glad it worked. Have fun on your date 🙂
You just saved me $18.50 !! you're awesome !! Thank you ( tape method worked first time )
Hi Jason! That's awesome, I'm glad it worked out for you 🙂
Double-sided tape. Boom! Thank you!!!
💪
love your humor. made this much less stressful/way more fun
Thanks! I'm glad it worked for you! :)
Wow slobber method saved my day! Thanks man!
Hey I'm glad it worked for you! That's the one go to for me as well works all the time. 🙂
Hi
Just to let you that the lick the negative worked for me
The film retrievers work some times but not as good as the above.
Thanks
Great to hear it worked for you 🙂
Worked like a charm at the first attempt!
Awesome!
Gonna try this and run a roll of film thru again for blind double exposures.
Awesome!
Thank you!! Was taking me so long until I watched this video!!
Hi Darcy! I'm glad it was helpful 🙂
The lick trick worked out perfectly! Thanks so much!:)
No prob! 🙂
Awesome! The licking one I would have never thought of it did the trick for me! Thanks!!
No prob! 🙂
Just saved a nice roll of Kodak Pro Image thanks to this video. Thanks!
Awesome! 🙂
Thanks a lot!!! You saved me with the "tongue" way.
That's my go-to method most of the times. Fast and easy!
Thank you! I have one of those tools but use it so infrequently I couldn't recall how to use it.
Hi Mark! I'm glad the vid was helpful 🙂
Thank you. Very helpful.
I'm glad to hear it was helpful 🙂
amazing, works so well, thank you!
Glad it worked for you 🙂
Great video!! Thank you for posting.
Thank you SO MUCH!!! Your videos are so useful! Keep on doing what you're doing
Thanks! I'm glad it worked for you 🙂 sorry for the delayed reply!
Thanks man, great vid, the tongue did the trick for me!
Cool! Glad it was helpful 🙂
Method 3 worked for me. Thank you!
Great! 🙂
you know what - i watched a couple of videos and tried the film picking method and failed, but the damn thing worked like a charm while watching your video. thanks for the tutorial.
I'm glad to hear it worked for you!
Thank you, your video saved my day! shooting a Zenit 12 XPS I found some old (1978) Ilford HP 4 BW 35mm, with a serous crimp in the leader and rolled the leader back inside, thought it was going to be a pain in backside to develop. after using the double sided tape came right out. Woo Woo
Awesome! Woo hoo! 🙂
Can’t wait to try this When I get home! Thanks for this video 🎞
No prob! 🙂
method 1 worked first time!!
Great!! 🙂
Worked for me. Thanks a lot.
Great! You're welcome 🙂
this video saves me
Great! 🙂
Very helpful, many thanks.
I'm glad it was helpful 🙂
Tipp nr. 3 is just awsome:-) thanks 🙏🏻
You're welcome 🙂
Such a handy video, it can be so tricky!
And sometimes frustrating at first haha :)
works for me! thanks!
No prob!
Thank you!
After failing trick #1 with the retrieval tool (the tool appears to be defective) I found that Trick #2 also works great with a small splash of 3M Remount Spray on one Side of the Piece of Film.
It can then be a little difficult to get the film through the light seal, but it grips so cleanly the first time that the film inside can be pulled out cleanly.
What is particularly cool is that the film strip prepared with 3M Remount can be used several times until the adhesive effect wears off and either new spray has to be applied or the entire strip has to be replaced.
That's a great idea!
@@filmismorefun what I just found out through tinkering around also works well is a strip cut out of a beer can and sprayed with 3M Remount. This should have made the Kaiser tool unnecessary. If you want to make a video about it, go ahead. Take it as a gift, on your input that you gave me with this video.
life saver, thank you!!
chelsea You're very welcome! :)
Thanks, sticky tape worked on two films first attempt.
Awesome! I'm glad it worked for you 🙂
the lick worked. thanks :)
Never fails! 😋
Thank you!!
Ligia Alberton Your welcome 😁
Thank you.
Sure thing! I'm glad you found the video helpful.
I just used the lick-trick on one. At first it didn't work, it just wouldn't grab. But then I figured why. - I used the other side and it turned out to be what I think it was; You need to wet the side with the emulsion, that's what will make it stick. The other side will just end up being wet slippery plastic, not sticky. - I still taste the emulsion after a quick lick, though... Dumb idea. I'll just use a finger, like I just did, next time. - But it does work!
Glad it worked for you 🙂
i tried the second one and third but it wouldn’t catch onto the leader but what actually worked was i was using the throwaway film and there was a sharp edge where i had cut it (one of the holes was exposed) and it actually caught on and came out when i was practicing without the tape lol
Great idea!
THANKS A LOT REALLY I JUST SAVED A 15€ COLOR FILM ROLL FROM MY OWN CLUMSYNESS
We've all been there! Glad it worked out for you.
Thank you
You're welcome 🙂
thank you soooo much :)
You're welcome so much! 🙂
Thank you 🙏
You're welcome! 🙂
do you have any advice for a cannister that doesn't produce a 'click' with you rewind it?
Try to go by feel and see if you can sense the end of the rotating leader. All the click is is the leader end hitting the inside of the canister after it passes the slot. I hope that helps!
thanks a lot
Holy shit did the tongue trick on this while watching and it worked. ✌🏾✌🏾
Great!
Hi, I got a film roll keychain and I pulled the whole film out of it. Do you know how to put it back to the canister?
You would have to remove the top ring and pull out the center spindle, then tape the film back onto the spindle.
The top ring may be hard to get back on though, especially if it gets bent during removal.
I hope that helps!
If the film retriever is not working, it could be that the barbs that grab the sprocket holes have been pressed flat. Just raise them with a nail.
That's a good point, thanks!
It worked! Subbed!
Awesome! I'm glad it worked for you 🙂
Yay!!! Worked!!!
Great! 🙂
4:02 i can't do this. Although I turn it, it doesn't go inside
Hi there. That means the piece you're using to retrieve isn't catching or touching the film inside the canister. You could try pushing it in a little farther so the (taped end or wet end) touches the film inside more firmly and has better contact. I hope that helps! 🙂
@@filmismorefun Oh, i mean i didn't try to retrieve, i can't roll (?) my film anymore. Sorry, my English is not very nice😅
You are my hero!!!
Haha hey I'm glad it was helpful 🙂
So ive used this same retriever and had a issue with one of the cannisters i had and the retriever has gotten all crumpled, is there anything i can do?
You can try to form it back into shape with your hands, but sometimes if they crease too bad you need to replace it. I've found they're not as rigid after crumpling, unfortunately.
Used the sticky tape method and worked first time YAY :)
Great! 🙂
is there any other way i can do this if you have none of the materials?
Do you have a spare negative?
I have that exact black retriever, I have tried it on several rolls of film, it does not work for me.
When mine was new it was easy to use and grabbed the film quick. Now that it's older it works less effectively. I mostly use the 'lick the negative' method as that almost always nails it on the first try. 🙂
@@filmismorefun I got mine from a friend, it is badly crimped, he has no finesse, he recently scratched a 16MP full frame Canon while trying to get rid of one tiny spot on the sensor.
@@mamiyapress oh no! 😯
Did it using the tool, wait for the click and pull.
Awesome! 🙂
Man, I lost my film retriever and stores are closed. The double sided tape just didn't work for me, I could never get it to pass the velour seals of the magazine, but oh gosh, I just reversed the film strip end and sucked on it both sides and *_Bob's your uncle!_* twisted the spool two three times and then pulled on the film strip and, _voilá_ 1/4" of leader appeared miracously! A PITA for processing film routinely but sure, beats opening the mag with a bottle opener inside the dark-bag --*_took down the darkroom 15 years ago and gone hybrid._* Process film, then scan. I just wait for the night, load the tank and prepare the chems. Next day I'm doing digital contacts and scanning. Beats hitting the planet with tons of dumped silver halydes, selenium, KRF, etc. Baryta FB paper looks exactly like Ilford MG-IV/FB and is ecologically sound!
Thanks a bunch for the deliverance; I was about to reach for the bottle opener! 🤣
😂 Hey I'm glad it was helpful!
Helped me. Cheers!
Awesome! 🙂
thanks :) Took a bunch of tries but I got it out. But the film was detached from the winder so it was all in vain...
Oh man!
@@filmismorefun I have no luck when it comes to film, but it's always worth the effort :)
i liked it and it worked
Awesome, I'm glad it worked for you 😁
Hi is there any solution if I have no negative?
Hi! You could try cutting a piece of very thin, flexible plastic to the width of a negative, and using that along with the double sided tape method maybe. 🙂
when i put my film its not moving inside i am keeping turning the cannister but film is not getting inside what can i do
Wont it damage the film inside the canister?
Hi Jack. Not likely, but even if there was some damage/scratches from removal, it would be on at the very beginning of the roll. So, there would not be any images exposed on that area. I hope that helps! 🙂
Okay , thankyou very much! did it right away with the tape hope it wont damage it
Excellent! Thanks!
You're welcome! :)
Thx this helped
No prob! 🙂
Just trying to get the leader out with that Kaiser film picker and it just doesn't work at all. This is the second time I'm using that thing and for the first time it worked normally and now it doesn't. Back in the 90's I used to work in a photo lab and there was never any issues with getting the leader out. Wonder if the "modern" film pickers are just crap... I guess I'll have to try the other methods then.
Just tried all of these tricks and nothing worked for me. I guess I'm gonna just break the canister in the dark, there is something wrong with my film. The tape trick was the most promising, probably the kaiser tool made it worse and now the tape thing isn't working anymore either. I've used already over 30 minutes trying to get it work. Already warmed my chemicals but let them cool again...
Yeah sometimes it can be hit or miss. I've noticed after several uses the 'barbs' that grab the leader can be less pronounced lowering their ability to grab. So to help with this I'll occasionally bend the barb tabs up which seems to help.
@@filmismorefunabsolutely. I just opened the canister and it was way less painfull. The leader had a tiny notch at the end that probably was the reason it didn't came out.
