I think why canute was so abrasive and defensive last episode was because as he said this episode most people usually try to trick him, bargain or ensnare him in these "peace talks". So that's what he thought Thorfinn was up to, but when push came to shove Thorfinn just said he'll run. Which really made an impression on Canute, how someone like Thorfinn, someone he knew as this cold blooded murdering Viking can become a "beautiful" man in just 4 years. He must have realized at that point that, even Viking, people he deemed unsavable in the last episode can be saved and be reborn just like Thorfinn. And that maybe violence is not the only way to achieve his dreams of a utopia. He also gained new allies as he said. I feel like Canute felt very isolated and alone with his goals, that no one was helping him and no one understands. But now he's found someone who understands and wants to achieve the same goal although through different means. And he didn't want to make more work for him.
My dad died just after this season started, and to say this season has helped me heal is an understatement. Being a good person is the hardest thing you can decide to do in life, which is why it's worth doing ❤️
I am truly sorry for your loss as well... Glad to hear, you find support in this and I hope you have a wonderful day with only the best memories of your father - not to reignite sadness, but to reignite a feeling of belonging, a bond, a reminder of that part which made you you in the best way imaginable!!!

The change in Canute may seem 'so quick and unbelievable' to some people but this is far more deeper than anything can be explained in few sentences. Canute expected Thorfinn to attack on him once he is cornered... and that never happened, You know Thorfinn was just monster in rage mode last time Canute saw him (that's why he didn't accept Thorfinn to talk at the first place). The change in Thorfinn gave Canute serious hope, saved him from his father's shadow and he understood he can do things differently and he can change as well... Also Remember this guy has been so alone, paranoid (remember he couldn't even accept some water from his sister and he killed his brother just because he could get killed instead). He also figured out there is also someone who's fixing the flaws of his plan and he is not alone anymore... Thorfinn and Einar also gave reasonable argument against Canute.... Remember Canute could only say ''hate me if you must'' but nothing else... he got cornered and clashed when it comes to the his ideology... and this also made me him surprised..... Don't forget these days are primitive days.... They didn't have internet, mobile phones etc etc.... Words, personal dialogues were far more impactful... This Writing level in Vinland is something else....and this series is definitely a masterpiece.
Gotta love that they gave Sverkel a chair and a farming tool so he could sit near them as they worked and feel like he was still part of the farm that had been his life.
Regarding the Thorfinn and Canute convo, Thorfinn also said that he has no idea if Canute's method is better or worse since it helps many while oppressing few, so I feel like it's less of a "Thorfinn doesn't have enough standing to tell Canute what to do" but more of a mutual honest understanding/ friendship, which probably lightened the burden Canute was feeling since he was poisoning people left and right, and dealing with people with schemes, etc.
Thorfinn's transformation this season is one of the best pieces of storytelling I have witnessed. From not knowing or not even bothering to know the names of the scores of men he's killed, to this episode where Snake tells him his true name as one of the first people he has "saved," what a beautiful arc our boy has been on.

I never thought I'd read manga. But I just can't wait to witness Thorfinn's journey. I finished 2 volumes already and its great so far. Season 2 was just phenomenal.
15:09 - Don't worry guys, I've read the manga up to its current release and there's at least 2 or 3 seasons left. The first two seasons covered up to chapter 100 and the manga is currently on 204 (and is still being released). So if they go at the same pace, there will definitely be 2 more seasons and tbh they should do 3 to not rush anything considering the manga isn't even finished yet and there's 3 major characters to still introduce in the show.
FYI...in the manga Olmar gave half the families wealth to the people who suffered due to the battle and Thorgil became a wanderer to never be seen again. There was also an intent to make an episode about Snake's background but the creator of Vinland Saga told the crew making the anime to not push themselves too hard since it wasn't part of the source material. Maybe we'll get an OVA at some point.
In case you didn’t notice. The poem in episode one was the same, but it wasn’t farming, it was Vikings carving up enemies. To see the poem in that new light was so powerful!!!
Seeing humans as flock starts to make a dangerously much sense when you actually learn how dumb we are on average. Many would just object to Canute by principle, but with no idea how to or intent to realize his virtuous goals. He felt alone in a world that lacked concern and perspective for the future. But then there was a simple slave who showed respect to his ideals, despite disapproving the results.
It takes great courage to be kind without being indulgent or enabling, it takes suffering to appreciate leisure, you can't appreciate goodness without staring into the face of evil, and you can't reach the heights of joy without feeling the pains of sorrow. The writer understands these binaries and their profound truth and uses them to paint for us a beautiful picture of the human experience. That's why I love this story so much!
Canute's characterization is really subtle so I can see why the shift seems so drastic for some so I'll break it down: First, we know that Canute hates war and suffering. Even Estrid noticed that he looked pained when dueling with Wulf. So violently taking the farm goes against his nature. There's even shots of him on the boat previously with a slightly sad look but that can easily be overlooked Second we have to look at the purpose of King Sweyn's head. King Sweyn represents the kind of King Canute doesn't want to be. So whenever Sweyn tells him to do something, it's an action Canute doesn't want to do but thinks he must to be an effective King. Sort of a reverse conscience. Whenever the head goads him, he knows the action is wrong but he's forcing himself to to it. Third is the feeling of isolation. Canute lost Askeladd, Thorkell and Ragnar. All of his key advisors. This lead him to feel isolated or surrounded by people he couldn't trust. This meant he didn't really have anyone to check him on his bad ideas. Gunnar was untrustworthy and incompetent in his eyes and Wulf too loyal and obedient. So now we have a lonely character forcing himself to do things he dislikes because he thinks it's the only way. This is where Thorfinn comes in Thorfinn first broke Canute's guard be not trying to be violent or manipulative. He showed Canute that there are other paths to take and that he doesn't need to resort to violence. Another big thing was what Einar and Thorfinn said. Even though he has grand goals, he's still oppressing people to get what he wants. It's a slippery slope and eventually he will become a tyrant worse than his father. Thorfinn saying that they were both working towards the same goal was also a big factor. Canute felt alone so Thorfinn saying he would fill in the holes meant that Canute didn't have to take such a large burden by himself. This allowed him to look at the entire situation from a new perspective. Sure he may have to do bad things in the future but he should act with caution and not cause unnecessary death and violence. Especially for innocents. So by seeing this new Thorfinn and realizing that there are others with similar goals, Canute felt inspired and was finally able to shed the methods he thought he had to use.
watching reactions in itself is sometimes a strange thing, however, I am so happy to rewatch this alongside you guys - thank you so much for your videos with these great discussions and pure emotions!
Im a year late on this but the whole “carve it” bit that they do is so genius. At the beginning of the season, the words are accompanied by visions of war and strife, which basically make it sound like it’s saying to carve your victory and strength into everything. At the end, though, the scenes that are depicted with the words make it seem like it’s saying to carve that earnestness and love into everything you do.
Earlier in the season sverkell tells snake to leave his sword and inherit his part of the farm, which is most likely what happened/will happen once he passes away
I love the use of the side characters for this season. Sverkel we see a man whom has already completed his journey in life. Every lession we learn this season from thorfinn to canute to ketil he already knows. And i love seeing his kindness and wisdom bring him joy in the end, he cant do the work he loves in the finale, but he is there with them, tool in hand, and will die on his beloved farm with everyone there. Ketil was always a kind man, but his clinging to his power and wealth set him up to learn the painful lesson just as his father did. But my favorite was Olmar. He was such a bash moron, so full of his pride. But watch every episode after he killed that man, you can see how hard coming to terms with that swayed him. He was devastated, even praying on the boat. Then when he saw those horrors on a mass scale with so many people he grew up with, it gave him the courage to set that perceived pride aside, and work for the lives of everyone. Then the ending for him was just beautiful. He's going to have a truly fulfilling life, and be the kind boy he always was without having to go through the hell is father is doing now. My only other thing is no just in these two episodes Thorfinn coming to grips with his father, but actually surpassing him. He was equal to his father protecting gardar, fighting to protect someone, but it lead to death and trajedy, just like with Thors. Thors never put his sword down, and said it himself, a true warrior doesnt need a sword. thorfinn took that next step in his fight with Drott, defeating him utterly without raising his fist at all. Its the most beautifully crafted story i have ever watched, and i find it hard when people tell me it gets better to even comprehend how thats possible.
I felt like Canute had this weakness in his plan, which was "oppressing the few". Thorfinn creating his world would take care of those people. So it was kind of like a division of labor. Them handling different parts of a new and improved vision, kind of together. That would also mean that Thorfinns problems would suddenly become Canutes problems. I'm not sure, but it felt like that to me
This music at 12:20 when they say there goodbyes to Sverkel, Pater, Snake and Olmar captivated me so much the first time Inheard it and I am still blown away by it with every rewatch. Such a powerful moment to put a music with actual singing voices in it. And a church-like music as well which fits so much with the scene of Einar and Thorfin right before this one. Both found their salvation: creating a land without war and slaves. I also feel so strangely proud seeing Olmar working with that girl at rebuilding the farm. And Snake and all his men (Fox, Badger etc.) really tackling the work as well.
The feels I got from this episode were just amazing. Seeing just how much of a positive impact Thorfinn made on everyone he met on the farm from Olmar, Snake, Old Master, Pater and even on Canute, it's no wonder they all think of him as a one of a kind incredible man. The scene of Thorfinn and Einar by Arnheid's grave is one of the best scenes I've ever witnessed in any show given the deep context behind it. Also that special poem at the end of the episode was just beautiful. Perfect way to wrap up the farmland arc for every single character we saw in S2. Also this JUST the beginning to Thorfinn's journey to establish a nation in Vinland. He still got more conflicts to overcome before finally atoning for all his sins by making a peaceful nation in Vinland.
I genuinely believe this episode was the best episode of any anime we’ll get this year. Solidified Vinland Saga as one of my favorites. Loved the discussion
Regarding Canute's switch, remember his goal is also a peaceful world, he wants to take the most violent people, vikings, and turn them into a country of peace. Of course, this season we saw all the horrible things he did with that goal in mind and how it consumed him, but when he saw Thorfinn, someone he knew as a classic viking, a violent man that almost stabbed him, turn into a man of peace, I think it gave him hope, if Thorfinn could change, if the vikings could produce a man like him, his goal was possible.
Pater:"They are headed to a world we never even imagined. Someplace not here". The name of the first episode: "Somewhere not here". These two seasons described a perfect circle. I don't know how the story will continue from here, but so far it has been simply perfect, imo.
I waited until the English dub was finished for season 2 to watch it and I just finished it about a week ago. I cried when I saw this episode in dub and I cried again watching it in sub with this reaction. What an unbelievable episode. This story is a masterpiece.
This episode was so masterfully done. I love it. I'm a manga reader (read 200 chapters) and i can say that Mappa took some creative liberties into really carving the story that fits into a cinematic experience. For example, they removed the part in the manga that shows thorfinn's face all swolen up. It was hilarious to see him talking to Olmar and Snake like that. Maybe they did that because that comedic scene wouldn't fit the dramatic tone of the episode. They also added that scene of thorfinn walking up the mountain. Pater's monlogue was also never part of the manga (but i like it). They also removed some lines in the manga which reveals Ketil missing Arnheid, Olmar selling about half the farm to pay the families of the slain farmhands and the guests complain why they had to work from now on. Thorgil's departure was also not explained. In the manga it was said he left the farm and was never seen again. Over-all despite all these changes and additional scenes, I love the episode. Truely peakland saga.
It's not in chronological order but further into the manga there's a flashback during another arc, which shows Thorfinn and Canute. Canute actually help and escorted Thorfinn in one of his journeys, and Canute actually highly respect Thorfinn considering he actually listens to him and often wonders how thorfinn would handle a situation that he's currently facing.
I'm voting for Vinland Saga season 2 to win anime of the year. It should have won in 2019. I hope it doesn't get robbed again. Unfortunatly popularity wins and not what's actually the best but if Cyberpunk won last anime awards beating AOT and Demon Slayer then I have hope Vinland Saga can pull through. This is year we had a lot of good shows. Oshino ko is also in the running but it's not quite there yet to win Anime of the year. Most of the peak stuff will happen in future seasons I'm sure it will win then. It definitly will win in one of the future Years but this year has got to be Vinland Saga's year. If a story so well written, beautful and emotionally impactful doesn't win that would be a crime. Demon Slayer this year was fun but it's not Anime of The Year material. It definity deserves best animation and best fight scene for sure. AOT won in 2021 deservingly but 1 movie in 2023 does not top a complete masterclass of a season by Vinland Saga. I hope people that only have watched popular anime like AOT, Demon Slayer, Oshi No Ko, My hero academia etc give Vinland Saga a chance and watch it. You got to be mature and patient to understand and appreciate how beautuful this story is. Don't be that type of person that wants action or something to happen every 5 minutes and can't sit through it to appreciate it's slow but steady beautiful journey. If you're that type of person then my only hope is that you will slowly change when you grow up in age because you're missing out on Peak fiction and storytelling by being a simple person like that and you will never evolve from that childish shell.
The bible coined the phrase "swords to plowshares" which is talking about the act of soldiers turning into farmers, which is supposed to represent peace spreading across the land. It's symbolism from sverkel converting snake and the other mercenaries from a warrior to a farmer
Vinland Saga is a life changing anime and manga for me. It may seem kinda strange to say, given it's a piece of historical fiction. However, Thorfinn's outlook on life and determination to be a peacemaker and to build instead of destory resonates deeply with me. I look up to him, his ideals, and his what I would call true manhood.
I think Canute felt immense guilt and the kings head represented it constantly reminding him what he has done. And I think he looked for any opportunity to alleviate his guilt but he couldn’t find anything so he kept doing what he thought was the best in a long run. And Thorfin gave him a reason to stop, that’s why he changed his mind so quick.
@@carlinjames9475 Definetly is, next season is my favorite arc for example, the history doesn't get boring and Thorfinn character still to develop, all the new settings and dilemmas are really cool and interesting and of course, the history is still very emotional
The anime might even be slightly better than the manga tbh as it leaves more for the viewer to interpret.. For example, during the Canute and Thorfin conversation, Canute says to Thorfin: "who do you take after?" leaving the viewer to interpret, whereas in the manga Canute straight up just says "you talk like Askelaad"... Which is actually really true in the debate the two are having; the way Thorfin crosses his arms and tells Canute "don't make any extra work for me" SCREAMS Askelaad.. Just unreal writing and direction, a truly peerless story in terms of writing and execution
The manga is currently on chapter 203 I believe, and the end of this arc is nowhere near the end of Vinland Saga, the upcoming arcs are gonna break the internet once animated, that’s for sure
I feel that Thorfin provided hope to Canute. I don't necessarily believe Canute fully wanted to do the bad things he did. He just accepted the reality of the situation he's in and understand how powerless he truly is, as king(referring to the waves).
after all the parallels between thorfinn and canute over the course of the season this is a beautifully written conclusion, both of them have the same dream but go after it differently, ending up "teaming up" in a weird way
There should def be a s3 and more as long as it keeps getting picked up and animated. I think w how well it's being received, should def get it. Bc this is just the beginning of their journey to vinland.
The reason why Canute didn't listen to Thorfinn last episode, was basically cuz he didn't trust him, and didn't think he would have the same ideals as himself. According to him Vikings are the oppressors, who have been living by order of the god, to destroy the peace in the world. So, saving Vikings from god (basically to have Vikings as the ultimate ruling power and to have no opposition, which would lead to peace by fear - hence eliminating possibility of war for Vikings and saving them), by fighting against God, to ultimately create paradise was the idea of his salvation, (Also you could see that he was already trying to minimize violence in a lot of scenarios, by using it only when absolutely needed to reach his goal) but then he saw Thorfinn - a Viking, who had no intention of fighting / violence for any reason, which shocked him, seeing that he was not alone on this pursuit of salvation, and was relieved. Hence, he decided to work with him.
i haven't read the manga, but i know that if this show continues, there'll be a lot more seasons, which makes me REALLY curious about thorfinn's journey. i reckon thorfinn will have to face more hardships in the future. this show ofc has historical aspects, so we know war doesn't just stop. we saw thors have to fight to protect people, and i think thorfinn will eventually be forced to do the same. just my theory though, amazing reaction!❤
This is really interesting, as a manga only reader and I don't want to spoil you is that Thorfinn asks himself that his dad, Thor's, despite him being kind and saying a "true warrior doesn't need a sword" he always carried a sword. And that's one of things he needs to answer himself.
It really does not get much better than this… The callback to the opening scene of this season was 👌🏻

Thorfinn first broke Canute's guard be not trying to be violent or manipulative.
Its so nice that snake gave Sverkel a tool to hold so he can feel like he is helping too.
watching reactions in itself is sometimes a strange thing, however, I am so happy to rewatch this alongside you guys - thank you so much for your videos with these great discussions and pure emotions!
Let me tell you I wept loudly like a baby... 😭😭😭Dang it... I'm crying now...
Probably one of my top 3 moments in anime, when he called Thorfinn a beautiful man😮💨 VINLAND SAGA‼️
Earlier in the season sverkell tells snake to leave his sword and inherit his part of the farm, which is most likely what happened/will happen once he passes away
Vinland Saga S2 is in contest for anime of the decade tbh
that episode is truly a beauty
There's 2 stories that changed my perspective in life and changed the way i do things, those being Vinland Saga and Mob Psycho 100
Holy the discussion was so good
Anime of the year? Anime of the Century, what a masterpiece ❤❤
the fact that i cried as much as i did when i watched this the first time proves that this anime is peak!
absolutely beautiful
Probably the greatest episode in ANIME in general....PEAK!!!!! I teared up with the "brothers" scene too
I waited until the English dub was finished for season 2 to watch it and I just finished it about a week ago. I cried when I saw this episode in dub and I cried again watching it in sub with this reaction. What an unbelievable episode. This story is a masterpiece.
This season using farming as an analogy is just brilliant: "It's more hard work and meaningful to build than it is to destroy"
I don’t want this reaction series to end 😢😂😅
Vinland Saga Season 2 is really what cemented it as one of the best anime I've ever seen for me. AMAZING writing.
Such an incredible show
Can't wait for you to react to openings and endings. I am pretty sure those are gonna be your favorites ops and ends of all anime
Peak writing, peak characters, peak soundtrack, peak morals, PEAKLAND SAGA!
And that's when you knew, Vinland Saga is a masterpiece.
The bible coined the phrase "swords to plowshares" which is talking about the act of soldiers turning into farmers, which is supposed to represent peace spreading across the land.
It's symbolism from sverkel converting snake and the other mercenaries from a warrior to a farmer
The one moment that made me tear up in this episode was when Snake told them his real name, was a lil shocker to me
Vinland Saga is a life changing anime and manga for me. It may seem kinda strange to say, given it's a piece of historical fiction. However, Thorfinn's outlook on life and determination to be a peacemaker and to build instead of destory resonates deeply with me. I look up to him, his ideals, and his what I would call true manhood.
They called it Farmland Saga, I called it PEAKLAND SAGA! 🧡
“This episode is perfect”
Yes. Yes it is
Loved the wholesome ending in this relatively dark anime.
Next season, I can't wait for your hearts to MELT!
"Brother come with me"😢
I think Canute felt immense guilt and the kings head represented it constantly reminding him what he has done. And I think he looked for any opportunity to alleviate his guilt but he couldn’t find anything so he kept doing what he thought was the best in a long run. And Thorfin gave him a reason to stop, that’s why he changed his mind so quick.
Omg, your covers are so dope man🎸 !!
There surely is a season 3 based on the fact there is almost 60% of the manga left to cover, although it hasn't been confirmed yet
without spoilers how is the rest of the manga? is it as good as this?
@@carlinjames9475 Definetly is, next season is my favorite arc for example, the history doesn't get boring and Thorfinn character still to develop, all the new settings and dilemmas are really cool and interesting and of course, the history is still very emotional
@@kvlvxn6186 this is great to hear! thanks for that information
15:12 the story is exactly halfway through. Expect more crying, more sweet and beautiful things to come 🥰 Also, the manga is ending soon
Absolutely amazing anime
What a show, i love it ❤
The manga is currently on chapter 203 I believe, and the end of this arc is nowhere near the end of Vinland Saga, the upcoming arcs are gonna break the internet once animated, that’s for sure
Same as carlie i thought Canute's shift was a little too fast. I didn't find it to make that much sense
Peakland saga 😩❤
I feel that Thorfin provided hope to Canute. I don't necessarily believe Canute fully wanted to do the bad things he did. He just accepted the reality of the situation he's in and understand how powerless he truly is, as king(referring to the waves).
great series all around - 10/10
I feel so bad for everything that dropped this show early. They missed out on this incredible episode
after all the parallels between thorfinn and canute over the course of the season this is a beautifully written conclusion, both of them have the same dream but go after it differently, ending up "teaming up" in a weird way
Peak show peak show peak show
A slight correction if I would have to make:- Anime of the all time*
There should def be a s3 and more as long as it keeps getting picked up and animated. I think w how well it's being received, should def get it. Bc this is just the beginning of their journey to vinland.
this is only the beginning of the beauty of vinland saga
Oh yes, about the next episode I think you guys have to TEARIZE what happens next...
One of greatest shits I have ever seen
Good news a new Vinland manga chapter got released today.
i haven't read the manga, but i know that if this show continues, there'll be a lot more seasons, which makes me REALLY curious about thorfinn's journey. i reckon thorfinn will have to face more hardships in the future. this show ofc has historical aspects, so we know war doesn't just stop. we saw thors have to fight to protect people, and i think thorfinn will eventually be forced to do the same. just my theory though, amazing reaction!❤
This is really interesting, as a manga only reader and I don't want to spoil you is that Thorfinn asks himself that his dad, Thor's, despite him being kind and saying a "true warrior doesn't need a sword" he always carried a sword. And that's one of things he needs to answer himself.
I really hope we get a third season. From here, the manga continues to shine.
It's funny how this would be a perfect final episode just for the last episode to be just as good of a finale
Season 3 will be peak as well :)
Such beautiful episode, I think think this should have been the ep finale
It's genuinely crazy to think that this marks the end of the prologue of Vinland Saga. It feels like the end, but in reality it is just the beginning.
