Angelo is right, we barely know this guy. To be fairly honest, whenever his character was introduced, I didn't care. Just thought he will just come and go away, also I was more attached/focused to Arnheid's character since she's loved by Einar. But man, this episode made me depressed, now I don't just think about Gardar but also about all the slaves that used to exist in our world who had hopes, goals, dreams but suddenly all of theirs were stolen. Also the direction of this episode was masterpiece. Symbolizing the reunion of Gardar & his son in the end(in life after death) really touched me. Also Arnheid's tears falling Gardar's face felt like a sudden raining in a hot summer which is a kind of freedom.
nah , the moment Gardar came into scene , i was like f*ck off Einar ,dont pry on married woman . Loved how heroically Gardar came to save his wife . But hated how Arnheid decides to abandon her husband so that she can live with ketil's riches . But glad , the old man put some sense into her.
exactly!! we don't know gardar well, but his story represents so much about the world they live in... how pursuing wealth and power takes men away from what's truly important... how war and slavery destroy innocent people and their chance for a better future... his story had to be told. and it shows how important thorfinn's mission is 😢
Genuinely, one of the hardest episodes to watch out of any show I've ever seen. Watching the show live, I was 10000% unprepared for what was in store lol
Gardar's death in the manga was sad because he was someone very special to Arnheid, but the anime did an excellent job of showing us what a good man he really was. Gardar represents "The monster that this world created" a man, a husband and at the same time a scared, tired father who suffered what no person should suffer in this life, losing his family and his humanity. Arnheid and Gardar are one very tragic characters. “Welcome home, Gardar, your son miss you". 😢😢
I think that what hurt the most was seeing Gardar fade in and out of consciousness. At some points he seems quite grounded, talking about his plans for the future almost as if it were a coping mechanism to deny Hjalti's death and his own imminent one. At other points he's deliriously thinking about his regrets or the cruelty of his master towards "random" slaves that just happen to look like him. Edit: and yeah... that piano hits hard
Aside from the hardships Gardar has went through that strengthened him and made him more resiliant to pain and injuries, its a well known scientific phenomena that when people lose alot of blood and they are nearly dead, they gain sudden massive bursts of energy that are basically a last desperate effort for survival from the brain thats followed by delirium and then severe exhaustion, then of course death. Thats how Gardar was able to choke snake out.
Shows like Aot and Vinland Saga which not only entertain you as anime but teaches you about Human life emotions and many more things should be watched by everyone.
No joke, this episode made me appreciate my parents even more and gave me the feelings what an actual Husband, Wife, Father, Mother, Son or Daughter would be feeling in these sort of situations. This is what defines Vinland Saga as one of the best seinen series ever made. Those emotions actually hit both your mind and heart.
ever since this episode came out i have been patiently and anxiously waiting for your reactions. Truly one of the most beautiful episodes of anime I've ever seen. And as you said it was for a character that was only in a few episodes of the whole series! I've watched so many people react to this show/episode but you two are by far my favorite! Yall are amazing! ♥♥♥
This is the Peakland For you! even a new introduced character like Gardar may make us broke cause everyone is so alive (also dead) in this series!... Can't wait to see for your reaction for the coming arc .... oh yeah the previous episodes were just building it up for this one, get ready :))
I’m happy to see that this episode emotionally wrecked other people like it did to me. Just wait, there’s more tears gonna be flowing throughout this second half but it is the best TV show of the year.
This episode made me tear up when I first saw it, it was so unexpected but beautifully well crafted. Him reuniting with his son and then when he said “I’m home.” That was so beautiful. The piano playing in the background was literally perfect. I’m sure anyone who has lost young children was hard to keep composure.
Greetings from Brasil! The script is like a song, and we listeners can only delight in every note. That bar in particular, started in one key, and ended in another. MASTER PIECE
In the next videos of Vinland saga we will see a lot of emotions and tears, one of the best stories written and we will really see the development of many characters, I love this show and your reactions.
The part that breaks me the most is that it feels so real, that I am 100% sure this exact scenario played out IRL. Ive watched alot of sad animes over the years, Devilman Crybaby, Made in Abyss, Clannad etc. But those shows are not as realistic as Vinland Saga, where the show is as 1 to 1 to real life as you can get in anime. So even though we've known Gardar for maybe a few episodes, its still that much more impactful & tragic considering something like this has happened, is happening & will continue to happen in our world in the future. What a modern masterpiece this show is.
the fact that Gardar only introduced to us in the middle of the season, yet his story and death can impact so much to the viewers/readers, is point proven why Vinland Saga is one of the best manga of all time.
For me, this is the best episode and the climax of this entire season. Gardar's story is the sum average of what war does to a family. It is irrelevant whether Gardar and his friends won the iron deposit, in the end - he lost everything. He answered the call of the battlefield but even the act of partaking demands a heavy tithe.
Look at those moves, Askelad son is fighting, I'm sure he is so proud and cheering in Hel. with those close up and camera angle of the eyes the best Cinematics in animation for sure,
One of Vinland Saga's greatest episodes. So much added content, especially in the back half of the episode that wasn't in the manga. Does anyone else ever get so chocked up and ugly cry that you find it hard to breathe? That was me for much of this episode.
In a show full of heart breaking episodes, this one missed me. I get the intent, but honestly, I didn't know anything about Gardar and didn't care that he died.
Peakland Saga....🥺😭❤ My heart and tear ducts were destroyed. Garzal is a symbol of regret. He was a very proud and kind warrior to his family. But he was too arrogant and stupid at the same time. The expression of her tears turning into salvation rain is too sad and too beautiful!!
I wasn’t sure I wanted to watch to this reaction. I couldn’t keep the tears in the first time I watched this and I couldn’t keep the tears out this time either
the 'Hjalti will want to be an adventurer' is a weird translation, in one of the subs its 'will want to be a Viking' and it hits so much harder. Since he's essentially saying no to tradition as they've been on the receiving end of it.
I think we all felt the same about Gardar showing up for the first ep that he will just show up and go but this ep proved us wrong i got attached to him, it was so painful to watch and not cry but so beautiful too, peakland saga indeed. Love your reaction & can't wait to ep 18 reaction 🙏🏼
Aside the sadness this episode gave, Has no one noticed the parallel between this episode and the Season 1 E17? Both started with weapons going toward's Thorfinn's face as he dodges Snake's Persian sword and Thorkell's axe?
It seems like Snake was one of the elite fighters in the Byzantine empire (Miklagard=Constantinople) yet Thorfinn went toe-to-toe with no weapon. The Thor genes go wild.
Painland Saga delivering some character development on our boy Ange, cant wait for the next episodes to see where this show take him, lol I cant predict anything now xD
Their child died when he was 6. He should have been 8 or 9 which is why they had that back and forth. He was waiting for Gardar as a 6 year old when he died as well.
hi! carlie and angelo, i just want to ask if you're already watch the kingdom: ashin of the north coz i recently watch your reaction to kingdom but i wonder if u already watch the ashin of the north coz it is not on the playlist
While they don't show what happened to Hjalti, it was just kinder not to show an innocent baby's death. You just know he's dead because Arnheid is sure of it, even if she didn't witness it. The only people Vikings/raiders spared among the captured were those able-bodied enough to be sold as slaves. Among those who had no value to be sold and thus were murdered were the ill or elderly. Same for babies and young children, who lacked the strength/dexterity to work, nor possessed the comprehension skills and intelligence to follow directions. No slave owner would purchase a baby. They'd have to spend years raising the baby before s/he could actually work. Only healthy teens and adults had value as slaves and were worth the effort to lug around to sell off. It's just like how Einar was shocked when Ketil provided medicine for Patel to treat their wounds to prevent infections. Or that Ketil gave them a day to rest. Most owners wouldn't waste valuable medical supplies, time, and man-power on healing slaves. They'd sooner do nothing, leave them to fate, and see if they survived. If they didn't, they'd go buy a replacement slave. The mindset being that any slave that wasn't working was taking up space and still costing them money by eating food (if they were even provided food by the master if they weren't working daily to earn it).
I don't think Gardar was wrong in going to get the iron and help the tribe. There really would have been consequences if a tyrant went and secured the iron deposit instead. There was just no way for him to have known that that one day out of >1000 days or so of living in peace, that the vikings would come and raid his village. If he had secured the deposit and gotten back like any of the other >1000 days of no viking raids, he and his village would be in a much better position. Conversely, if he hadn't gone, and the iron deposit was secured by a tyrant, his family and tribe would suffer those consequences for SURE. He didn't make the wrong choice to go.
This episode did not hit for me at all. I felt it was fairly hamfisted and the actual subplot gets introduced fairly late to adequately deliver on the emotional impact. Not to mention Gardar is pretty unlikeable for the all episodes leading up to this. He's basically lost all of his humanity and is a giant wrecking ball just killing all others as he sees fit. I thought they were gonna bring this home when Thorfinn is talking to Snake right before he delivers the fatal blow on Gardar about how he can't let 5 of his men go down without recompense. The value of a life and so forth. I thought Thorfinn was going to elegantly pull out basically an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind type of dialog. How killing Gardar wont bring anyone back and what good is another corpse on the pile? But then they wallow in Gardar's sorrow for far too long, and we just basically met this guy. Hitting us over the head with the symbolism and it just felt unearned. I don’t think they earned it. It wasn't terrible but it was too melodramatic for me.
And this is why they call it Painland Saga. Beautiful episode though. No one is doing it better than Vinland right now!
