  • Different leagues in prices but is the Seiko SLA045 ProSpex MarineMaster 300 a valid alternative to the Rolex 116600 Sea-Dweller “4000”?
    Both have high-grade steel and ridiculous depth ratings but which one will put a smile on your dial?

    The Marine Master is really a stunning watch.

  • @tombundgaard
    @tombundgaard 3 года назад +29

    Which one would I like to wear, you ask? I have the blue MarineMaster and it feels so great and luxuriously, as you mention. So MarineMaster for me all the way! It is boring to have a Rolex in Hong Kong (everyone has one). The crystal on the Seiko is domed on the underside and with AR coating, and that beats the Rolex. The design of the MarineMaster is much more tough and “brutal”, but done in a luxurious way.

    • @restaronesolutions5308
      @restaronesolutions5308 2 года назад

      Brutal? The Seiko is far from it from an engineering perspective because the Rolex manages to be able to withstand 4x more pressure (and does so with a thinner case + higher accuracy movement, no less)

      @Kevins-Philippine-Retirement Год назад +8

      @@restaronesolutions5308 dept rating difference is something that very few humans needs to be concerned about. A good test would be to repetitively throw them at a brick wall, and see which movements last the longest. I have had the experience of destroying 2 Rolex watch movements with hard use in oceanography. I have yet to. Destroy any of my Seikos.

    I have an SLA021 incoming. With the recent price rises and unavailability of Rolex watches I don't really like walking around with my 16610 Sub. I've also had it for many years and fancy a change. I bought an SPB187 and the case shape prompted me to order an MM300. Thank you for a very interesting and thoughtful review, and comparison.

      How did/do you find it? I’m thinking of ordering either the black or blue mm300 this week. I had the older sbdx017 and loved it but want to rebuy the newer version.

    I just picked up the 140th Anniversary SLA047 black bezel green dial and I couldn't be happier. I own watches many different houses- Omega, Rolex, Tudor, Breitling, Grand Seiko - and I have to say that the Marinemaster is as good or better than those brands... Superbly designed and at a fraction of the cost! Also, my big worry was how it was going to wear and although my Rolex are the most comfortable, the MM300 is supremely comfortable, even more the than watches like the Pelagos, PO, Seamaster, etc.

    • @andrewf5390
      @andrewf5390 11 месяцев назад

      I own the same SLA047 and agree completely. The polishing on the Seiko case is quite a bit better than the also excellent polishing on my Rolex Milgauss.
      The only area where the Seiko may let some down is the thickness, but Seiko has plenty of other iconic SLA series dive watches with equal case finishing in a slimmer package (Willard/Uemura and 62MAS).

    Two great watches, the Seiko has more personality, I think we can all agree on that.

    The difference in price makes it a win win for me on the MM300. It's basically a GS disguised as a Seiko at a modest pricepoint

    MM300 is a gorgeous watch, however I ended up purchasing the MM200 instead due to the size of the MM300. The sub is a classic, for some a grail, I enjoy the simplicity of the Sub but the MM just has something refreshing about it. It makes it's subtle mark and it is such a reliable watch, now it looks more than just a tool watch, its a reliable tool watch with such attention to detail that it is honestly a collector's piece that can be for the general population as well. Great comparison.

    I have the green SLA019 which I wear on the bracelet and the black SLA021 I bought in Japan that I wear swimming surfing, kayaking etc in the excellent silicone band. They are luxurious and great tool watches simultaneously as you say. I love the retro vibe too. Different to my Subs and SDs as you described but these have always been a special Seiko to me. All my 8L35s (incl SLA017, 033 & 043) all run approx +3-4s day in and day out. 😎

    Great comparison, man. Brilliant to see someone offer true objectivity. The sign of a genuine enthusiast - among very few on YT. Similarly, I also own a MM300 and SD4K. To my mind (a scientific diver and collector of dive watches), these are the two finest all-round/everyday, professional dive watches ever made (ok, the Tuna whups them both as a pure dive watch, but try getting it under a suit cuff). Sure, they are at different price points, but the apparent quality is not that different. The MM300 is more comfortable (for me), more beautiful (for me), better lume, with a more practical bracelet. You can absolutely tell it was made by hand (in a good way!). But, the SD4k has the best bezel action ever (think Campagnolo Record or Abu Garcia) and is the final, ultimate expression of the Rolex diver - a genuine professional tool that will take an absolute beating and can still cut it (understated) in a suit. No oversize monstrosity, no BS Cyclops and a rare Rolex too - one for the congescenti!. But gotta say, my MM300 gets more wrist time and is a watch I strangely feel more affection for. But I find this a common thing with Seiko vs Rolex. Also, I've noticed SD4k prices creeping up, but you're right, they're still a comparative bargain.

    • @manuel_winde
      @manuel_winde 2 года назад +1

      I agree I have owned both and while the SD4k was technically perfect with nothing I would change (apart from the price and availability!), the Seiko was so imperfect it was better if that makes sense. If had more character and was cooler.
      Both great watches but I think I will rebuy the mm300, maybe the blue one though this time.

    These two match up very well. I have the previous Seiko 300 with the Marine Master on the dial and 44mm case. It looks very similar to this new version. It does wear very much smaller then you would think based on it’s caliper dimensions. Mine keeps about +5 and my Rolex SD4K is +2. The Seiko MM300 is one of the best Divers they have ever produced. It is a beast of a watch for sure but I find it manageable on my 7” wrist. Beautifully made and priced well especially compared to a Rolex Sub. My Seiko freak buddies really love this model. I have to say it’s won me over and I love wearing it now. No regrets but agree with you that Seiko should shrink their case sizes just a bit.
    The Rolex SD4K is absolutely the best SeaDweller Rolex has ever produced IMHO. Low production numbers only in catalog Basel World 2014 to end of 2016. It was available in ADs until probably 2018, apparently didn’t sell very well? It’s a Transitional model with all the modern features like Ceramic bezel, Glidelock bracelet, Chromalight blue lume, parachrom spring, yet it still retains the classic 40mm tapered lug case vs the Maxicase on the modern Subs. Curious how Rolex went back to this tapered lug case on the latest 41mm Subs. I guess they finally figured it out, the MaxiCase was clunky and not as elegant. I think the tapered case is much better looking and very unique to only this Rolex Ceramic Sub/SD. One day Collectors are going to figure out just how special, rare this model is and it will become extremely sought after. Your right it’s somewhat familiar and not outwardly exciting but upon closer reflection it is very different/unique then any other Sub/SD. It’s a keeper for sure.

    The choice is much easier if you swap out the clanky Seiko stock steel bracelet. I got the Strape Code Hexad for my SLA045 and that completely elevate dynamics of the MM300. Thicker but smalls link that properly balance the top-heavy MM300 while giving you a better fit. Milled clasp with 6 micro adjustments as well.

    The Marine Master is pure Seiko. Forget that it is a Grand Seiko movement, in a case hand finished by Grand Seiko artisans and made in the Grand Seiko facility. It would not exist without Grand Seiko because dedicating those resources on their own wouldn't be economically feasible. These (post Marine Master) Prospex Professional 300M+ watches are an improvement on the Marine Master predecessors. They are not Grand Seiko watches though. They lack the flourishes that are at the heart of Grand Seiko. Everything Grand Seiko is highly decorated and creatively designed; This is different. This is a hand finished tool made from high end components with an attention to proportionality but not novelty. These Seiko's don't try to be anything new. They aren't lit up with adornments like the Credors and Grand Seikos. These are simple, high quality, everything you need and nothing you don't - tools. In Rolex terms, this is more old school Submariner than Yacht-master or Yacht-Master2. In Seiko terms, the Marine Master is for people who just want a top quality tool without flourishes made by skilled artisans with high quality parts.. The Marine Master makes a bold statement in its function, quality, and size. I am only considering the ceramic bezel models and I like that it is de-branded. It doesn't try to distance itself from the affordable side of the company. It doesn't hide behind a high luxury product line or tell anyone what to think of it. It stands on its own. I like that it doesn't try to be something it isn't, nor does it feel like a compromise in trying to hit an unobtainable mark. These will not fall out of fashion.

What a super purchase...not disappointed at all. Can't try an MM300 Yet as all dealers are still closed due to Covid19. Even though Ive just got 6.5" wrist I prefer larger wearing watches. Very well done, as always. The one question you did not address is “which one would you wear if you were that professional diver for whom these watches were intended?” Having been that guy, I would say unequivocally that I would go for the MM300. Once I stopped diving, maybe became a dive superintendent or an office rep., I might go for the Rolex… and that’s a large “might” as it would only be for the status symbol. I wore a Tuna back in the ‘70’s. Most guys wore SKXs or Turtles. Had I seen a MM back then, I would’ve bought it. I have one now for different reasons: it brings me back the flavor of deep diving, the history, my own experiences and memories, like nothing else. And yes, it’s exquisitely, almos unbearably, luxurious. A Rolex’s quality being beyond debate, without crawling into the technical details, the MM makes the Submariner look and feel cheap-as a tool.

    The SD with its helium valve and price tag is a bit of a farce really. I don't think I could take someone seriously wearing one. Give me a pre ceramic sub any day.

    Sea dweller the forgotten Rolex. Almost Cellini situation.
    Comes to divers for me there is no alternative than the big O. A seamaster for 300 meters depth, and if i want deeper i take a Planet Ocean to dive 600 meters deep.
    Good you call hulk. It increased so high, it brings the sea dweller on the card as the outsider. Smurf became exotic.

    Omega seamaster 300 doesn’t stand a chance between these two Juggernauts,Rolex is the best skin diver ever while MM300 is the best pure diving watch ever!!!

    THE marinemaster is more value for money. it is more refined and in ny Humble opinion looks more expensive. Rolex is all inflation and there is something cheezy about it

    I’d feel better with the seiko. Too much baggage with Rolex these days 🤷

    With the current strap on the LX no competition, if seiko fixes that I'm in line for one!

    GS doesn’t make great divers 👍. Bless you ! 😀Yes 🙌 that MM directly seduces to divers collectors even if they have multiple Rolexes like me.
