It's characters like Ventress that show just how little the majority of fans know about characters who were originally from the old EU. Ventress was first introduced in the Clone Wars Multi-Media Project where she makes her first on-screen appearance in the Clone Wars miniseries and the Dark Horse Clone Wars graphic novel volumes. While a bit one-note and nothing more than a simple pawn in the Sith's game in the miniseries, the graphic novels take this idea and then make us care about her, not by her actions but by the people she interacts with namely Obi-Wan and Anakin. Both characters interact differently with her with Obi-Wan seeing her as someone to be pitied and redeemed after discovering that she was once trained as a Jedi but whose master was murdered before she was ready but could still be turned back from the dark side, while Anakin sees her as a threat to everyone around him and as a source of pain in his life as she had captured and tortured Obi-Wan, killed Jedi in front of him, and even threatened Padmé (during this moment Obi-Wan was advocating to the Jedi Council to knight Anakin for all of the good things he's done, meanwhile Anakin was Force throwing Ventress, binding her in power lines, and throwing her off of a building). Ventress hates both because she doesn't want to feel pitied and both are the only Jedi to have ever defeated her in battle (meanwhile TCW doesn't show her to be all that dangerous of a villain as she doesn't kill any Jedi whatsoever, just nameless clones). Her only loyalty is to Dooku (who doesn't train her as a Sith, merely an acolyte) but her constant failures at the hands of Obi-Wan and Anakin force him to dispose of her and he has her killed. She fakes her death and her story is left open-ended. Essentially, Ventress got the Grievous treatment in TCW where her story was already interesting and still full of possibilities but her character was changed, her motivations were shifted, there was no explanation for the animosity between her and Anakin or the flirtation between her and Obi-Wan. And she is treated as only threatening to clones all of the Jedi that she interacts with survive their encounters with her. I personally would've liked to have seen a TCW story that showcases a Jedi Padawan whose master was killed by Ventress during the war and they go against the Jedi Council's orders to pursue her while drifting closer and closer to the dark side. When they finally catch up to her, she sees in them a reflection of herself, maybe even explain to them how their stories are similar (rather than the simple and easy flashback sequence) but she kills them anyway as that is how far gone she is. Her origins as a Nightsister are not revealed (because that doesn't make any sense for anyone who knows about Nightsisters and about Ventress) and she remains as something of a mystery.
Are we talking Grievous in the main Clone Wars series? Or the animated one from the Clone Wars micro series? Cause one is *significantly* more intimidating than the other.
Morrille Nagy nah, the only chapter in which he wasn’t intimidating was the one with the Gungans and unfortunately that’s what everyone seems to remember. The two times in which he almost killed Ahsoka and Kenobi, Eeth Koth and Fisto? Or even Maul in Son Of Dathomir? Nah that never happened.
@@DiZtheJedi "Filoni! Why did you not make me badass like Tartakovsky did! I am far more badass than that bald witch! After I deal with you, I will add her lightsabers to my collection!" - General Grievous
@@Dass_Jennir The only time I found him intimidating was in Tartakovsky's series. Then Revenge of the Sith happened and he became a joke, and to me and many others, he never recovered. So, to me, he was only an impressive being when used by Tartakovsky. And even if I did like him more in the second Clone Wars series, I didn't say that he wasn't intimidating in that series; just that he was *more* intimidating in the first one.
In the first 2 seasons she was a pretty generic villain, great chemistry between the characters she fights, but from season 3 onward she becomes a very dynamic character. It’s a shame her story was never truly concluded in the Clone wars show.
Have you done Cad Bane yet? He’s a really good character and is pretty underrated since he hasn’t appeared in anything mainstream. I think he’s a solid and interesting character since he’s clever than most. If you were to grade him I’d give him a B/B-
Sorry to keep bringing up 2003, but I also liked how Ventress acted as a true Sith assassin. In the 2008 cartoon, although I don’t remember much, I never really got the feeling she was an assassin, someone who stayed in the shadows and manipulated any situation she found to her advantage. In the 2003 cartoon, she was calculating and efficient, I think, and especially in the few comics I read, she turns to brutal methods and torture to get the information she wants. I remember reading about her torture of the ARC Commander Alpha and Obi-Wan rescuing him, which also established Kenobi’s involvement with Ventress, as if Ventress was a constant reminder to Kenobi of what Anakin could be if he slipped up as Anakin’s master. That’s just my headcanon of the character though since my mind isn’t restricted by 20-minute intervals and such that comes from being a tv show, I see Ventress as almost the opposite of Grievous: Grievous was meant to be the face of the opposition and a threat to peace while Ventress stayed in the background preforming important tasks in secret. That’s at least my view of the character.
I was hoping you'd touch on the proto Ventresses in the prequel era media. Aurra Sing, a pale bald women was given the exact same backstory as Ventress; a former padawan who believed the jedi betrayed and abandoned her after she lost her master years before Ventress was created. Her creation being one of the concept designers working for George Lucas on Attack of the Clones really wanted the next Sith lord to be a female. Proto Ventress and a fembot were considered before Lucas decided on Christopher Lee for the Count Dooku role. Then there's Komari Vosa from the Bounty Hunter game, who was inspired by the Ventress concept art for Attack of the Clones. Ventress proper wouldn't actually come into her own until the Dark Horse Clone Wars comic run, which would influence Genndy Tartakovsky to put her in his micro series.
We must remember that original Ventress character development and story were made by authors of Star Wars: Republic comic series introducing her backstory, being Nightsister, death of her Jedi Master, going to the dark side, relationship with Obi Wan, Dooku's betrayal and her leaving the war behind. 👍 Dave Filoni only modified and build on it.
I feel like I may be one of the outliers here but I actually really didn’t like Dark Disciple. Part of this is because that I loved the way Quinlan Vos’ story ended on Legends, but also I would’ve preferred having Ventress survive the war. I also felt that their “romance” was a bit silly and YA-esque. I would much rather have kept the characters of Tholme and Khaleen Hentz in the picture, as well as referencing Quin’s previous history with Dooku and the dark side. And seeing a one-sided/unrequited love on behalf of Ventress would have been very interesting to see.
I would rank her as the best female character from the clone wars. Sorry Ashoka fans but Ventress is much more complex and interesting chracter. I have her on the list of my favourite characters since season 3.
I didn't care for Dark Disciple, you guys should check out the OG Republic/Clone Wars comics, it's what the book was based off and Vos, and most of the Jedi who only show up a few times in the show are much more fleshed out. Vos and Ventress get better endings too.
She doesn't get a proper introduction in the 2008 series. Which is why I consider the 2003 clone wars volume 1 canon and the beginning of volume 2 with Anakin's knighting, and the battle of coruscant canon. In the 2008 series Ventress, Anakin, and Obi-Wan are already well acquainted.
To quote Jensaarai1: "Ventress in Legends was effectively Dooku's pet serial killer, a deeply disturbed individual who would've been a natural fit for NBC's Hannibal, by contrast Ventress in Canon is a weak pantomime villain jumping from one parental substitute to the next, spending most of her run as a disposable lackey to whoever she happened to be serving, and when she finally stepped up and started calling her own shots, she got herself horrifically murdered. In essence, the writers of TCW got Ventress's character ass-backwards, stripped her of her iconic weapons, stripped her of her iconic appearance, then killed her off in a crappy Harley Quinn-style romance novel."
You would think that she the "sexy assassin" type (Ex: Catwoman, Black Widow, Black Cat , Widow Maker...), but in her fights with Obi Was is him who keeps flirting just to piss her off XD hahaha
Listening to this video, it got me thinking about how Ventress and agent Kallus were functionally the same character for the first half of their shows basically. They were there specifically to contrast the ridiculously not dangerous bad guy food soldiers (B1 and stormtrooper). It was "Ok. Ventress/Kallus is involved. It won't be strictly good guy rolling the comic relief. Kind of like how in drawn out lightsaber duel, when one character starts dual wielding (ugh) sabers as if "Oh. It's on now. Before it was off. Now it's on."
I prefer the Dark Horse storyline more, but the character was done justice in the CW series. I do not care for the romance with her & Vos, His relationship with Khaleen is too ingrained in me. The comics were also open ended so in EU she is still out there.
Excellent character who changes quite a bit during the show, she's dark, sexy, funny, can mix it with the best of them, and she has some depth. B for me - oh and she deserves a better ending than The Dark Disciple stuff.
I love Ventress! Ever since her first banter-full battle with Obi-Wan. She's such a badass... And then her full backstory was great (albeit too fast) Edit: and yes! That alternate universe shipping sounds great!
I first saw her in the 2003 Clone wars and loved the design and then I loved how her character played out in the 'Clone Wars' comic that came out in the years that followed. Loved the character and how she was portrayed and handled. While I prefer that version to the newer iteration the new version is also good. Probably because they seemed to respect the material that came before, even if they didn't stick with it 100%.
I liked him more than any other inquisitor except Trilla (but she is in a game so it doesnt count), i allways thought why the 2 inquisitors of the season 2 would be a worthy enemy if Kanan already defeated the Grand Inquisitor, he should have been introduced later
We need a petition to get dark disciple animated or something lol. It was sadly a missed opportunity for season 7 of TCW (Although I’m still happy with what we got). It would manage to keep people on Disney+ and continue to mend the gap between Disney and the fans. Win-win, Disney just has to see it.
I really liked the character of Asajj and her banter with Obi Wan was very entertaining to watch. Although I'll be honest. In my opinion Asajj was misscharacterized in Dark Desciple. I think that there are better ways to conclude her character. But still I consider her to be an amazing character.
As much as I love having a double dose of Ashoka in season 7, had they taken out the Martez arc and given us even a 4 part Dark Disciple it would have been a lot better
@@ajzeg01 yes. I know this. As I stated "even a 4 part" knowing full well how long it was supposed to be, but I would have been ok with a shortened version
I would like to see a dark side mini series. Some episodes about Ventress, some about Dooku, some about Maul, ones about Vader. Hell, a multi-season series where they start around Plagueis and moved forward chronologically and showed how they found and trained their apprentices would even be cool
Great character. I always looked forward to her on CW.As the series went on her story developed. She truly was a tragic figure.Sure would love to see Filoni finish her story.
Dark Disciple is too long to fit, plus we already got that story in the book. Besides, like it or not, it was important to catch up with Ahsoka before the finale.
@@ajzeg01 Being in a book isn't a substitute for an actual ending in the show. Also it definitely wasn't that important to waste 4 episodes like they did just to "catch up" with Ahsoka.
ajzeg01 bro that ahsoka arc was a waste Wym. If it was only the last two episodes I wouldn’t of had a problem. We should of gotten son of dathomir arc instead
ventress is very similar to zuko from the last airbender except in terms of betrayal and being cast aside, which is a super interesting directorial connection with filoni.
I gave her a B because I didn't like the way her arc just dropped off the planet at the end. But she definitely had A potential. The first time I started watching clone Wars I saw maybe 10 or 15 random episodes and wasn't really sucked in. In preparation for the final season I decided to give it another try and started from the beginning and her arc was amazing. Just the handful of episodes with her going back to her planet and the witches was really spectacular and so interesting to see how they used an aspect of the force without simply being another offshoot of the Jedi. When her entire people were wiped out by dooku you really could feel her pain and isolation. I loved how they introduced Savage through her and then reintroduced Maul through him. It was easily the best work of the series before the last four episodes. It's just a shame they chose not to explore her arc further in season 6 instead of some of the plot filler we got.
You should do a series of ~30-45 min videos where you summarize a whole book. Dark Disciple, Master & Apprentice, Ahsoka, etc. And please do Jar Jar next I’m genuinely serious.
I didn’t care for her in the early seasons, but she’s great later on and in the Dark Disciple book. Dooku: Jedi Lost too! That audio drama is very underrated.
Asajj Ventress is a lesson for the creators and writers of Game of Thrones! You can start off with a character that's bad for the sake of being bad but with a bit of creativity you can transform her into something more complex and multi dimensional, unlike the night King!
They should make the Dark Disciple into a prequel spinoff movie. Not only would it wrap up her story arc on screen but live action Quinlan Vos, yes please. Though I doubt it could be done without Christopher Lee.
I missed her so much. She was a sweetheart kind of character. I prefer her with hair instead of being bald. I wanted to see the arc with her and Quinlan Vos.
Idk if many will see this. But ventress really helps solidify the fall of the jedi council. In the ark where ahsoka goes on the run, she become a better judge of character than the council and this is solidified when anakin begins to believe her

Grievous is pissed
I think she was a bit underused in the later seasons but I thought she had a lot of potential because she had a very interesting, refreshing story
Have you done Fives, if you have not, can you
I have not, but it looks like he was nominated and doing pretty well so far.
If you were to grade him I’d give him a B/B-
I still to this day, cherish the fight banters between Obi Wan and Ventress.
Aila Dreamwound I mean she basically was that. She only needed to do tasks that needed to be done quick and fast. Grievous was loud and destructive
She is a Rattataki, not a Dathomirian, so…
Clone/ARC Trooper Jesse should be next, thanks to the finally
I'm so disappointed that her final episode arc in The Clone Wars was never made. I read the book, and I just wish I could see it on screen!
To each their own I actually liked barris the most.
I absolutely agree man. She has more depth than most of the characters in TCW.
2:33 "who just seems to exist for the sake of having another villain throw at our heroes" = all Sith Inquisitors in Rebels
I didn't care for Dark Disciple, you guys should check out the OG Republic/Clone Wars comics, it's what the book was based off and Vos, and most of the Jedi who only show up a few times in the show are much more fleshed out. Vos and Ventress get better endings too.
The Clone Wars has some of the best female characters in Star Wars
she was always A from day one even in the other clone wars series.. the reason they gave her more story.
Heres an idea. A rating of kreia and her philosophy.
I love her! She has such potential. Can wait to see what they do with her next.
To quote Jensaarai1:
"Ventress in Legends was effectively Dooku's pet serial killer, a deeply disturbed individual who would've been a natural fit for NBC's Hannibal, by contrast Ventress in Canon is a weak pantomime villain jumping from one parental substitute to the next, spending most of her run as a disposable lackey to whoever she happened to be serving, and when she finally stepped up and started calling her own shots, she got herself horrifically murdered.
“He’s only half the man you are, Savage”
Mustafar levels of burn
7:58
AAHHHHH!!! Holy crap, there’s me! XD
Wasn’t expecting that, let me tell you. Please do Darth Vader next.
I was so pissed when ventress wasn't in season 7, she was my favorite character next to Grievous
And then her full backstory was great (albeit too fast)
Edit: and yes!
I would like to see you talk about the grand Inquisitor because I think he's a underrated villain and he also got a interesting backstory.
dante future fr
Except that Dark Disciple was supposed to be 7 or 8 episodes, too long to fit.
@@ajzeg01 yes. I know this. As I stated "even a 4 part" knowing full well how long it was supposed to be, but I would have been ok with a shortened version
She’s my all time favorite Star Wars character
I would like to see a dark side mini series. Some episodes about Ventress, some about Dooku, some about Maul, ones about Vader. Hell, a multi-season series where they start around Plagueis and moved forward chronologically and showed how they found and trained their apprentices would even be cool
Ventress story breaks my heart. She was looking for a home, a place to belong, and she can never hold on to it for long. ☹
I still consider the 2003 intro to Ventress as headcanon.
Ay, Finally got mentioned in one of these videos 😂😂😂 thank you Thor
Great character. I always looked forward to her on CW.As the series went on her story developed. She truly was a tragic figure.Sure would love to see Filoni finish her story.
This is Darth Bullsith of the Galactic Notification Empire! All wings, report in!
Bullsith, standing by!
Oooh, the Revan vote could get heated! All depends on what game you like
I am very annoyed that we had to put up with the Martez Sisters for 4 episodes, when we should’ve gotten Dark Disciple
I got pretty interested in dookus betrayal but they never finished her story and that really lowers my score.
Great character, I ended up really loving her as the show progressed. I was sad her story was never finished
Ventress all round Epic lady. Dathomir sisters, connection to Maul and Bobba Fett co-op all put me on Ventress hype train.
Disney: *makes bad movies*
Disney: I suppose you're going to ask me to surrender.
SW Fans: Actually I plan to let the clones execute you.
You should do a series of ~30-45 min videos where you summarize a whole book. Dark Disciple, Master & Apprentice, Ahsoka, etc.
And please do Jar Jar next I’m genuinely serious.
I really hope Disney allows the animation team adapt the Dark Disciple in maybe a mini series or a movie.
She's in my top 5 all time favourite Star Wars characters. The more light shown on her, the better.
I didn’t care for her in the early seasons, but she’s great later on and in the Dark Disciple book. Dooku: Jedi Lost too! That audio drama is very underrated.
Ventress is one of my favorite characters!
I have a theory they'll reanimated her episodes along with Son of Dathomir, just because how successful the show was on their streaming service.
Battle of the Heroes & Villains: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/107fblqMb_NO55U5LosZb8NTB2SLrxnZDUZ-MXqUv7B0/edit?usp=sharing
She had no intimidation factor, a pure pushover.
If dark disciple was added to ventresses story where would she rank?
Do u think that they would ever do a film adaptation of Dark Disciple?
I really liked Asajj from pretty early on. She had a cool look, she was different, she was INTERESTING. See that, Disney? INTERESTING.
They should've replaced the bad batch ark with the ventress ark or anakin obi wan utapu ark
these are the kind of female characters that we need now. don’t add female characters to push an agenda. instead create good characters
I loved Ventruss in the fact I hated her but then enjoyed her fall and development to actually helping people lol
Asajj Ventress is my personal fav sith and bounty hunter character in Star Wars
Mace Windu should be next
Best chracter developement.
Damn, I didn't vote in this poll :(
I missed her so much. She was a sweetheart kind of character. I prefer her with hair instead of being bald. I wanted to see the arc with her and Quinlan Vos.
She is a Rattataki, she don’t have hair.
Idk if many will see this. But ventress really helps solidify the fall of the jedi council. In the ark where ahsoka goes on the run, she become a better judge of character than the council and this is solidified when anakin begins to believe her
Is there a difference between the best movie vs a favorite movie.
They can be one and the same, or two totally different entities.
