I really like the JEL head. But man! I’m really digging the Small Box tone. Just my personal taste but between the two if I had to pick just one, it would be the Small Box.
The re sale on them is horrid. I lost a lot when I sold this one. I prefer my LP R9. they are very nice but very over priced. Yes on par with custom shops but the company will never but that well known. I was at Namm and they had a little corner next to mezzabarba amps with like 4 guitars and did not seem to get much attention. Just my 2 cents...
For the love of GOD....that is gain heaven. I agree with you 100%, the Smallbox sounds a bit warmer to me, which is a good thing. But, Dave said he was going for more of a hot-rodded 800 sound on the JEL. The 800's traditionally always seemed to be a bit thinner, and a tad fizzy to me. I'm splitting hair's though. You've got these dialed in. I wonder how much that Tumnus adds to the tone, though. I'd love to hear a with/without sometime. I've also noticed that every time I hear a Knaggs like yours it sounds absolutely fantastic. I'm sure that's a huge part of it. SOOOOO articulate and biting with a ton of snarl. And, this was all bedroom volume??????. This was an absolute pleasure to watch.
Thanks brother! Actually much closer to Loud band volume :) The ch 2 on the JEL really makes you work for a pinch harmonic and it just did not have that upper end cutting harmonics. My take with the Friedman stuff is by taming the harsh top end Marshalls are known for he cuts the mids too much. The Tumnus helps bring them back in a bit but i ultimately offed the SB due to all treble nd presence and not enough mids.
@@cragginshred Absolutely. You're the first person I've heard notice that. There's an interview floating around where Mike Solano talks a little bit about that. I just returned a Blackstar Black & Blue that sounded killer, but was a piece of junk, from a QA standpoint, and the effects loop broke after 2hrs of use. I think I'm just going to go the route I originally wanted to go, which is a Dirty Shirly mini with pedals, for bedroom use. That or a Fender Super Sonic 22, and just use pedals for my high-gain tones. I have a relatively small music style I play, but it's all guitar hero stuff ranging from SRV....to EVH. I simply don't have $3K-$4K for an amp, given I'm a drummer first and foremost. You got any suggestions? You got that 20watt Marshall sounding really good was it the mini classic you had?? I bought the small box pedal to use with the Blackstar, I'm hoping the pedals are good enough now to use with a really good clean amp. At this point, I'm not sure what direction to go, given I only have just under $2K to spend. What would you do? I'm interested, because we here guitar tone exactly the same way.
Hi I love ❤️ the tones I have a few of Friedman’s pedals myself I love what he’s making. How would you like to be a guest on my social media talkshow. I run a gear based show that also features performances by returning guests I would love to have you come on.
i realize this is a ridiculous question- since each amp sounded good....what did these amps get traded out of your collection for? meaning what did you replace them with?
In this instance I kept the SB instead of the JEL mainly because the Jake ch 2 was not very inspiring. The order of them all coming and going is a blur now
@@cragginshred Makes sense, Now that you said it; that the amp builder model may give more of a tone variety versus a signature amp, thanks for the reply

Put head phones on turn them up a bit and that's exactly what it sounded like in the room sans the air moving. All mics sound a little different -as you likely know preventing an accurate representation of the tone.
Run the smallbox pedal into the JEL clean channel? That's a beefy power section against a 'small' one. Also, man that's some serious hiss, playing live would be a mess. I'd start right there. Shouldn't need any choking device with either of those. Especially for how much $ each amp is.

Very little Reverb added

Would you say that the SmallBox can produce some early/mid 90's alt/modern rock tones or is it really specifically more vintage voiced?
I would get something else. More vintage snarl, however the mids are nowhere to be found. Thick and chewy tho!
