Brett, you're the man! The triple "Welcome" cracks me up every time :D and as always, I love your playing and the tones! thanks for yet another very cool video!
Hey Brett, did you ever post the SB demo? You mentioned that a couple times in this vid, but I haven’t been able to find it. Curious minds and all…thanks.
Not sure If I ever did a SB demo. Great amp though! I've used it in tons of videos though. Enough to get the idea. I usually was just plugged straight in too.
Thanks Bret for getting back to me so quick, I'll have to check out your web page. I forgot to mention the Germino 55LV, I had a Club 40 it was great, but at that time the PPIVM had not been available, and now they are.
I am looking for whitesnake sound especially reb beach. Which one do you suggest ? or hughes Kettner Grandmaster deluxe 40 works well for that sound. it is also so much cheaper
Not sure man. I think the BE-50 Deluxe would get closer to that type of sound. Not sure about the other amp. There is a PRS amp called the Archeon or something like that and it sounds great at a lower price point.
The Dirty Shirley ships with a tube rectifier and has more sag, a looser feel which I personally dig.. haven't tried it with a solid state rectifier but it will for sure tiighten it up.. I wonder if you can put a tube rectifier in the Small Box?
@@BrettPapa hell ya man u got too. Your videos is one of the videos that led me to buying my Dirty Shirley. I was in between it the small box. And actually wanted the small box more. But once I played them. It was over with. The Shirley stole my heart. Plus, I'm not even a huge Van Halen fan. And that Dirty Shirley Van Halen tone you have at the end is fucking amazing.
This video was the tipping point that made me decide to pull the trigger on a SB50 vs a Silver Jubilee. This is by far the best sounding SB50 video on RUclips. Have you ever gotten a chance to play a set of Fralin Pure PAFs? Wondering how they would compare to the Lollars in your guitar.
No it is actually a Bill Nash guitar and my old boss put the Fender sticker on it haha! I put the hum bucker in later and just cut out the hole for it. The pickup is a Lollar Imperial Low Wind.
papastache102 that’s still a bitching guitar man, it sounds and looks amazing. I’m gassing for a super Strat like that. Love your channel and keep up the good work man!
Loving the DS....especially, pushed with the right pedal. When you're setting in front of both amps, the DS seems warmer to my ears. It's such a shame you can't get the DS mini anymore. I've tried several places, and they've been out of stock (for over a year now). But, the DS pushed with a pedal (if needed) sounds better to me than the SB. There are some STUNNING videos of the mini on RUclips getting a spectacular, tight high-gain tone. Wish I could afford a Twin Sister! Great video Papa. Would love to see a great video of you showing some different OD pedals (including the Buxom Boos) with that DS, just to see what kind of pushed, tight 80's tones you could pull out of it. 👍

Thanks! I would do either a Divided by 13 BTR23 or the Friedman Small Box. Both sound great! I have played out and recorded with both and have gotten great results.
i have the SB50 and i never even use the 2nd channel. Channel 1 on the SB is a great modern day Plexi amp. My uncle is the original owner of a now vintage marshall 1959 plexi (i believe 68) and we inevitably had to compare them. Other than the speakers (the only thing that pisses me off about friedman's business is all the 2X12s are V30s) being different, the two heads played very close (basically, we tried out both heads with their respective cabinets and then compared both with the friedman cab; via impedance load matcher and then compared both on the old marshal cab G12s 55hrz). I don't know if in the end the V30s are the best match and i have been toying with putting some greenbacks in my friedman 2X12 cab- I respect Dave's knowledge in this arena, indeed it is the only reason that has kept me from making the speaker switch- idk. Tangent aside, the SB50 nails that 1959 plexi sound (i don't trust my own ears, its my uncle's amazement that convinced me; he isn't clapton but he is a great guitarist and has been with that amp for a long time)
I love channel one! So good. Both speaker are great and pretty much the most popular speakers of all time. They have their own speaker coming out which is very good!!! You will have to check one out!
They are different. Divided by is more open clear to me where as the Friedman's are straight up Marshall style rock. Both are great, that's why I have both :)
Do all Smallbox owners get that amount of gain and that crispness? Is it just me, or you got to push the master way up to get anywhere close to that amount of gain?
Yes...I have the sb50 and he def has the gains up high and the masters way down. This amp sounds good in any position but master on 10 and pre on 10 on ch 1 is a.c./d.c. perfection. The buxom betty pedal works great on this amp when you start getting the masters above 5...the hpf on the pedal keeps things tight and clear.
Would be great if you can do an in depth demo of the smallbox & im also intrigued to see what the buxom boost pedal sounds like through it. Love your demo vids, keep them coming Brett 👍🏻

SAME! Currently agonizing over the decision to trade my SB for a DS because I only use channel 1, and feel like I'd get more of my money's worth out of a DS. The decision is killing me!
They are both about as good as it gets for me...I had both..Now I just have the Small Box. The Small Box 50 is slightly better in a live band mix situation. If you just play at home without being in a mix,..They are about equal in terms of tone and response. The DS may even slightly edge out the SB in this scenario. But playing gigs and set rehearsals,...The Small Box is just a skosh better. It cuts a little better volume for volume and it sits perfect instead of almost perfect.
The BrightSwitch is for First Channel ONLY on the SmallBox. Yeah its a hard dicission, I also had to make. I owned the SmallBox. Never had an amp with that wide of dynamic range. Stay tuned. Greetz from Germany. Rock on. I like your Videos. Matz
The Dirty Shirley sounds more classic and the small box a tad more modern or pokey. I like the Dirty Shirley as it reminds me more of the Marshall bass circuits which were a lil fuller and less bright but smooth and crisp at the same time.
Mini Surf I did that and ended up trading to SB limited. U end up there anyway at least I did and no I’m not rich. Quiet amp. I’m going to keep saying it has NO radio stations coming in at all. Very quiet. Dave’s a really great amp maker.
Why can't you say which one you like more and for what reason. Stop being a lackey and give us your real honest opinion. I am so sick of watching these comparison videos only to be left with "you make your own decision". We don't need you for that. That's not why we watch the video. Grow a pair and give us a real winner. Say it clearly with your mouth so everyone understands. Please.
Hmmmm, I gave you an honest opinion, they are different. It depends on what sound you are going for. I would suggest you go to a store and listen to them and make up your own mind.
I want to know what you think. You are the expert. I like a good modern 6l6 rock with a good clean channel. I am not trying to be an ass. I just want a side of the fence picked. Most of these amps sound the same to me. I can barely play guitar, so I am not going to go demo anything. It's too embarrassing. That's why I come here.
I hear ya. So the Shirley has a little bit more of its own kind of sound. Whereas if you want more of a plexi or a modded Marshall type of sound the small box is great! Hendrix to Van Halen I would do a Small Box if I wanted a modern country or a blues style amp I would go for the Shirley.
Your the man Papa! Thanks for the great demos like always and Im going to pull the trigger on the Smallbox very soon. Even though the be-50 deluxe is out now I still like the Smallbox more! Keep Rockin' brother!

But playing gigs and set rehearsals,...The Small Box is just a skosh better. It cuts a little better volume for volume and it sits perfect instead of almost perfect.
4:45 & 11:23
what cab are you playing thru Brett? and if its 212 cab from Friedman your in 8 ohms ?
Yep with Vintage 30's
Small box single coils 1st position 👍👍👍
Yeah, it's a pretty sick tone!
Fuck!!! In this video you can see how Friedman amp's sounds AWESOME in very low volumes... Almost on ZERO!!
+Del Rei Rock Yeah they really do sound spectacular at low volumes.
Matz
Thanks! Thanks for watching!
Turn the bass down to let the mids be present!
I usually don't use the bass much.
@@BrettPapa Friedmans don't need much bass due to how much he mods out the Marshall shrillness. Love your vids and lessons bud !!
The Dirty Shirley sounds more classic and the small box a tad more modern or pokey. I like the Dirty Shirley as it reminds me more of the Marshall bass circuits which were a lil fuller and less bright but smooth and crisp at the same time.
Some it up pretty well! Both are a blast to play!
Dirty Shirley sounds thicker
She is a beast. Such a good amp. They both have their plus sides.
Dirty Shirly = AC/DC
Small Box = Van Halen
Yep that pretty much sums it up haha!
The amps sound great but it is the guitar that really kills me.
Haha hope that is a good thing! It is a Bill Nash 60's style Strat.
papastache102 with a fender neck?
papastache102 check that just saw your previous reply it’s a sticker.. ha love it
The last time I was this early, there was still a moustache! First!
Haha!
Divided by 13 is the amp!!! ;) these two are to compressed for me...
Tis a good one! They are different all together. Both are awesome!
I couldn't wait to get rid of my divided by 13...
...why was that? Did you have any problems with it?
Brett I just want ti hang and smoke a j with you ha ha...
Haha! Sweet lol!
But for $2700 il get something else
Lot's of options out there.
papastache102 don't get me wrong they both sound great. But...very pricey. Love ur videos!!!
yeah, bad ones!
Mini Surf I did that and ended up trading to SB limited. U end up there anyway at least I did and no I’m
not rich. Quiet amp. I’m going to keep saying it has NO radio stations coming in at all. Very quiet. Dave’s a really great amp maker.
Damn, people still wear CommieFornia hats without being ashamed?
Haha it is a chiropractic event called Cal Jam that my friend puts on.
Say something like, "both of these are great amps. But I like the Dirty Shirley better because....fill in the blank. Easy as pie.
