    Great video.....all 3 amps sound great. The kicker for me with the Friedman is build quality and being new. I've owned Marshall heads in about all flavors since the 80's and with good ol' tube amp tech's getting scarce ( in my area anyway) reliability pushes the Friedman to the top for me.

    Very appropriate comparison of the Small Box and 1987X. I think you summed it up perfectly at 7:20 when you said that they are similar, but the Marshall is a little more aggressive. The mids are more pronounced with the Marshall making the Friedman a bit thinner-sounding in its "Plexi Mode" too. 4-Holers rule! The Friedman is probably more flexible though and I understand that Friedman master volume controls are very effective. As for the 2203...yes..."different beast" and as seen in your expression when you switched to it is your favorite.

    Small box is my favorite! Id be happy with just the plexi channel but then you get the higher gain as well. Two killer, killer amps in one. Great playing and very cool guitar! They all sound really good….the sound of that 800 brings back memories…

      I‘m going back and forth comparing my Smallbox to my 1959slp, JCM800 and Silver Jubilee thinking about which one maybe replaced by something completely different and always come to the same conclusion (space wise unfortunately). The Friedman Smallbox is an awesome refined Marshall tone that you almost don’t even have to high pass or eq in post because it’s almost too perfect if that makes sense… And don’t get me wrong I would never part from it and maybe if I only could have one Marshall Style amp this would be it. But on the other hand the JCM800 and Super Lead have such a rewarding nasty high end growl and punch to it, that I just can’t get out of the Smallbox. My least favorite of the bunch is the Silver Jubilee - but I just own the studio version so it’s not completely fair to compare. In the end it’s all flavors of awesomeness and I feel lucky to own them all. 🤷🏻‍♂️👊

      @@christopher.k.guitar We have the same taste. I don't like the Silver Jubilee nor the BE100 (both too dark and compressed), but the Friedman SmallBox is the one to keep, not only because it's as open as a Plexi, but also because it has a better master volume and less hum than a Marshall.

    Loving your videos man. I feel the same way about amps that try to copy and improve on the Marshall sound. They can get close, add more gain, tame the highs, and all that jazz. And at the end of the day, the reason why Marshall sounds the way it does (especially in the mix) is because it has all those characteristics that people seemingly want to remove. And don't even get me started on the way it feels to play. Simply amazing.

      @@EugeValovirta230V True, but they have a lot in common. Maybe Friedman takes some of the bass out in early gain stages, and adds it back in the power amp section with the depth circuit. Te purpose may be to keep the bass from getting flubby, which can happen in a Marshall. Some people like a Marshall feeling a bit out of control. It forces you to play better. It's unforgiving to mistakes.

Seriously thinking of getting one for Christmas so as to have all the basic amp sounds , vox , fender and Marshall if I got one as that would probably cover any style/tone that was called for plus it would be nice to have a Marshall again and mabey even dig out the les Paul for a bit of rocking out!

    Thanks for all these comparison videos.. unfortunately for me it's got me thinking of getting another marshall! Damn... 😁 Need some help deciding please.. there's a 2011 jcm800 2203 100w going used for similar price to a new marshall jcm800 studio 20w. Mostly I'd use at home for playing when everyone is out of the house and have an attenuator to help with the volume. If I do gig with it I would be running wet/dry with a vox ac15. Which one would you get in this situation? Thanks for any help with this.. 👍

    • @EugeValovirta230V
      @EugeValovirta230V  Год назад

      If you have one 16 ohm cab connected then the amp to 16 but if you have two 16 ohm then the amp to 8 etc. If you’re not sure just keep the amp’s impedance lower than the speakers but never higher. The optimal is obviously that they match. And the speaker’s ohms should be the same with each other too. If you have one 8 and one 16 ohm = no good.
