      As a child of the ‘90s/early 2000s, I remember being pissed that we were stuck with the JCM900 (which I owned, and had a good clean channel and crunch boost on said clean channel but clipped a diode for the dirty channel which made it suck, one was better off just stick to the Channel A and using a tubescreamer TS9 or TS808 for your dirty channel) and the JCM2000 series which I liked even less lol despite all the channel options, the tone from diode clipping and tone overall just was inferior to the clean channel with crunch boost of the JCM900s and overall the earlier JCM800 2203 of the mid-80s and especially all the plexis before - the only good stuff we had was the JP-1 preamp and the el34 50/50 and 100/100 power amps but no one could afford that when we were kids lol the Mesa Triple rectis were cool though.
      But yeah Marshall really dropped off after the late JCM800 models, even more with the JCM900s and then the most with the JCM2000s (DSL and TSL series). Wish we would’ve had the Plexis and early JCM800s around, especially now with reissues and reverb.com and eBay and stuff when it’s easy to snag them.

    Nice! Nothing beats a dimed plexi. With a load box/attenuator you get that seventies/eighties feeling without moving too much air. I didn't found a pedal yet which can nail the gain structure of a fully dimed Marshall. It's getting close but with an attenuator I get closer. I liked the Zakk Wylde head in this video too. Don't ever let that one go. My first head was a 1973 Super bass mk.2 with a simple master vol. added. I was around 16 when I bought it. I recorded and gigged with that amp. I wanted more sounds and sold it to search for more versatile heads, big mistake. More circuits doesn't mean bigger tone!! More circuits = more repairs, more expenses, less time spent playing. Old Marshalls are different because of the transformers, there is soo much current moving in those amps giving a world of dynamics ;-)

    • @Guneslinger
      @Guneslinger 3 года назад

      @@christianboddum8783 No way!!! I re-amp at smaller gigs, load it down with a load box and then to a pedal sized power amp through a 2x12, kind of miss having a effects loop, but, if you don't gain the snot out of it it is fine running everything through the front, Good enough for the Drunks we play for!!!, I have had other guys tell me it is the best re-issue they ever hear....LOL, I don't tell them it's the real deal, Can't leave it out of my sight!!

      @@Guneslinger Cool. The missing efx loop is what gave my Super bass problems live when running delays, but I didn't get a loop installed, I thought going modern with another amp would be more economical. A Fryette powerstationion could give you the loop you need, a little costly though. I've gone the full Helix route also, and can use my Tube amps as a powerstage, I hope it works without going 4CM, I need a gig to try it out for real ;-)

    Great video, Euge!! This amp is such a great amp. The perfect rock-n-roll beast…..and simple. The best part of this demo is how little gain you had dialed in. People today are using WAY too much gain in my opinion. And, it’s causing the modern guitar tones to lose articulation, definition, and bite. That’s also one of the reasons I absolutely LOVE the Bogner Helios. Splawn amps are a lot like that too. Lot’s of percussive, bite. You’re showing perfectly that EVH didn’t use a ton of gain to get that awesome tone on Fair Warning…….that was the PERFECT amount of gain (IMO). I believe that was also plexi that this re-issue model was based on (correct me if I’m wrong on that). Great opening riff too! Very inspiring demo, Euge.

      @EugeValovirta230V  2 года назад +3

      Exactly 👌.
      Ed used a 100 watt Plexi so no but they’re quite similar. I like the 50 watt a bit more ’cos the tone is pretty much the same and the 100 watt is just insanely loud and puts out way more power than 100 watt (I’d say around 180 watt) that most reactive loads & speakers can’t handle it that well 😎.

      @@EugeValovirta230V That's good to know. I'm using a Fryette PS-2 on my Soldano right now, and absolutely love it. There's virtually no difference between the cranked SLO tone and the attenuator. I may pick one of these up. I think the clean tone on these are criminally underrated, as well. That super warm Jimmy Hendrix thing... You should do a video Euge about the importance of not over-doing it with gain for these young players who think that because they're using a High Gain amp, that that equates to cranking the gain itself all the way up. Even with my SLO, I'll either use the Crunch Channel pushed, or with the Overdrive channel, I'll use it on 3, maybe 4 at the most. But, this was not only a fun video to watch, but informative, with great riffs. Btw...I'm out of my mind how good that EVH "frankie" guitar sounds. That Marshall lit up when you plugged that in. Do you know what pickup that is in that guitar?

    Hi Euge, again thank you for your quick response. It's me.... Kerry in Houston. Thanks for the link to your TSL 100. Now that I see it I realized that I have seen it a few weeks ago. But when I saw it coming from Switzerland it was out of the running right there. I just had already made up my mind that I'm not buying a sensitive piece of electrical gear like a TSL from overseas. With twice the chance of it getting here damaged from shipping. It's bad enough for me to get one shipped here in the states. Not to mention that I myself could drop it from the top of my staircase and watch it tumble to the bottom only to become a pile of damaged goods. To be honest with you I have been looking at the TSL directly next to yours on Reverb. $1199 + $185 shipping + probably tax. Mint condition, from New Jersey. That one has been on my radar. Looks like original owner. Anyway I'm sure you don't to hear me talk about other amps. I am sorry about that Euge. I must say that your love for that Plexi is quite noticable. I love your passion for that amp. Expensive for sure. So I will be keeping in touch and watching your videos. I need to subscribe. Congratulations on over 10k subscribers. One thing that I like about your particular TSL is that it's really the only one I get to hear before buying and I already know it sounds great. It's tempting me. Probably would get here in good shape like your Canadian 5150. As you can see I can get one mint and for less money here in the states. But again.....I thought your TSL sounds great compared to the other amps in this informative video that I just watched again. Your new song that you wrote with your ESP and Plexi sounds great dude. Ha Euge, Kerry in Houston again. I actually grew up in Los Angeles. Followed a girl to Houston just before turning 20. So I grew up enjoying those California summers, listening to Van Halen on the beach, then going home and trying to figure out what he was doing with that guitar of his. Anyway, wanted to say how beautiful it is to see a grown man brought nearly to tears over a Plexi amp. You are a great example of what it means to love playing guitar and loving the amps they come through. Man.....I enjoy your you my friend. And yes, your tech did a great job fixing your TSL 100 to sound great. Despite the some comments you've received about how crappy the JCM 2000 series was. Love the passion as usual! I used to play through my buddies mid 70's Lead II and his Plexi, A LOT. How I described the Plexi sound to him is what I called it has those "bubbly mids". Like you, I have to have mid range in there as well and the overtones from the mid-centric tone of these is great. That LTD's pups sound quite PAF'y to me and from that classic crunch, of 70's 80's to the EVH tone, you're right. If you're feeling blue, play through or better yet, get a Plexi!

    Great video! I had a small box 50W Plexi with a Marshall 8x10 cabinet back in the day. That thing was a beast. Soundmen hated me for my stage volume! Dimebag Darrell tried to buy it off me one time when we were playing a show with Pantera (funny story). I wouldn't part with it back then, but ended up having to sell it years later due to family issues. I really miss that amp. I've been trying (unsuccessfully) to get that tone back ever since. I just ordered a Marshall SV20H that should be here today. Looking forward to getting that tone back! Thanks for the video!

    Yeah !! Thank's Euge for this test and the shootout with the JCM 800.
    It's definitely a great amp. A big dynamic sound like the 100 watts version but more easy to saturate.
    And a killer vintage look... 😉👍

  • @OgamiItto70
    @OgamiItto70 3 года назад +6

    If you're used to amps that have channels and modes and master volumes and built-in graphic EQ's and depth and bright switches and "gain" knobs and solo boost pedals and all that, you might have a bit of a tough time, at first, with an unmodified Marshall plexi. You can still get almost all of those sounds out of one, but *you* are going to have to make them with your picking dynamics, your guitar's volume and tone knobs and pickup selector switch and a pedal or two. But *that's not a disadvantage!*
    Since a plexi is such a simple machine, it colors the tone of your guitar and pedals very little. What goes in comes out. Just louder and with some Marshall plexi goodness and shine on it and without muddying up your guitar and pedals' tone.
    Unless *you* go hog-wild with pedals that add too much distortion and/or compression or weird modulation, delay or reverb effects, you're going to be forced into upping your guitar playing game because there's nothing to hide behind. What goes in comes out, only louder, remember.
    But don't worry. You won't be thinking "Ah, shit, I _have to_ play this pain-in-the-ass plexi now so I can get better at my touch on electric guitar." No. It'll be _fun._ You'll _want_ to do it because it's so much fun. The better you get, the better you'll sound and the better you'll like it. It's like an automatic positive reinforcement behavioral modification machine that sounds _really bitchin'._ It's definitely one of those "better off in the long run" deals.

    Today is Van Halen day! I think they all sounded awesome, but the 50 watt Plexi sounded a bit thin compared to the 100 watt heads. On my end, the 50 has a weak bottom-end. The 100 watters sounded more full, with more low-end. I like them better, but I know that 50 watt plexi would sound great in a mix! You make everything sound great, because you are such a great player. You know how to get the best tones out of your gear. You know what works and what doesn't. Your channel has helped me a lot! Hi I've owned a lot of Marshalls My 1st head was a JCM 800 50W with 6550s The Original
    Right now I own 2016 DSL 100.. And AVT50 head.. And I must say that AVT kicks ass.. If you plug it into 2 8 ohm cabinets it is insanely loud.. Throw an EQ in the effect slope and you can pretty much get any Marshal tone you want out of it and I only paid $150 for it you should try one out.. The DSL I got used for only $600... And it is like a high gain plexi.. It really kicks ass man..
