Agree!! Genuine joy and enthusiasm that is contagious as hell...! Of course killer skills , feeling and tone adds greatly. The Euge statement earlier "- If you have troubles in your life, get a Plexi ! " has become my favourite.
Referencing your jamming at 1:30. People say blues-based rock is out of style and overdone. But I disagree. It's timeless. Hearing blues rock guitar with a raunchy tone is a unique experience. It's visceral and hits you emotionally like nothing else. I never tire of hearing double stops and string bends. It's what makes the guitar the most expressive instrument. People say jazz was America's gift to music. I say it was the blues. From Chuck Berry to Led Zeppelin to Badlands to Pantera-- their blues DNA gives that music soul and groove. A Plexi and blues rock is a match made in heaven. Thank you Jim Marshall! And thank you Euge for your great playing and enthusiasm.
I've got a Friedman SmallBox. Used to think my other amps I owned sounded like a Plexi until I actually played through one and realized the sonic difference. The SmallBox accomplishes that to the max. Ever get a chance, try it. Best if cranked but also a great clean boost in front gives it a unique glorious symphony of tone.
I just built an 18w plexi head from Trinity amps and wow what an experience. At first I didn't like the sound because I was used to solid state rectifiers in my tube amps which give that tightness. But now that I've worked in the speakers and tubes and everything, and figured out where the sweet spots are, oh man it's amazing!
Loose can be wonderful too. Vai has a song called Frank, and it's his Legacy so loose in tone, and as a result so beautiful. Val always says he loves loose. Give 'Frank" a listen, it's a testament that loose can be really cool too.
I was one of the guys asking you for a test like this, thank you very much! A cranked JCM800 comes pretty close to a Plexi, it is not the same, but it is the best of both worlds. This is also the reason all the metal bands did their studio recordings with cranked JCM800s back in the 80s. Now I wonder what it sounds like using a cranked Plexi and JCM800 at the same time... hint hint hint ;-) Auf wiedersehen.
I have a blown up 1970 50w bass head .. sat in my shed for 35 years. Your video's make me wonder why I bought so much other stuff rather than get it fixed.. 🤦 My new year resolution is to save up and find some one to save it. 🙏🍻
It's 6:47am here in NZ and I am on my first coffee of the day listening to four Marshall amps before I am even fully awake. :) Marshall nailed it with the 1987X. It's one of their best reissue amps. It is more aggressively crunchy than some of the older Plexi amps, i.e., some of them are cleaner. I am not sure why though. It's got something that the other amps can't quite do huh? I decided not to mod my Plexi replica, because I am afraid it will lose it's plexi-ness. I may install power scaling though, because running that much horsepower into a load box makes me nervous. It seems to work better than master volume to lower output but not lose drive. I still have not picked up my Silver Jubilee 2525H lay-buy that I am buying for a more modern sound and lower power, because unexpected expenses stuff keeps coming up, e.g., three teeth ripped out etc (maybe the plexi blasted holes in my teeth lol).
My first experience with a JCM800 half stack made me a Marshall guy for life.... although I had to take a few detours before coming back. A few years ago, I was lucky enough to have the JTM1H, JMP1H, and JCM1H. They were *great* but as I got more and more into them (eg. tube rolling all kinds of vintage glass in and out to "optimize" the experience) I decided that I needed a little more power. I got them all used and fairly cheap and REGRET selling them, thinking that Marshall would step up and make more since the demand was so good. Anyways, sold them and bought a Fargen Olde English 800 mkII ... basically giving you handwired JTM/JMP/JCM circuits that can be switched between one another with the "Decade" knob. I've never had a comprehensive explanation of exactly how it works - once had a very quick chat with Dave Friedman who said that the individual circuits seemed to be accurate but like I said, it was a very brief chat. In any case, it sounds fantastic, Really wish Marshall would come to their senses and re-release those 50th Anniversary mini heads. So many people want them and they are just PCB based - cheap and easy to make. Better still, I'd love to own the 20 watt SC/SV heads that they're making these days. Until then, big thanks to Eugene for scratching the itch, the great comparisons and making them all sound so damn good.
😎🤟. 800 was my first tube amp and in the (early) 90s when everyone was buying 5150s (which I did too) I bought 800s (they were so cheap back then; I paid around equivalent of 300€ / amp - it was Finnish Marks back then) and I ended up having 5 but sold 3 of them and kept the two I liked the most which I still have today 😎. Thanks!
I've got the TSL head, had it since the early 2000s, mostly always used it for playing high gain stuff, but have been tinkering with the amp quite a bit lately, and I'm able to pull some nice old style tones from it.
I tell ya Euge….this was a fun video. Watching you crack up the whole video was hysterical…lol Most of these were really predictable, and similar. But, I did NOT anticipate that Plexi sounding that good. There’s something about that amps simplicity that I love. Plug in and crank up 🤟 Thanks for posting! It will be fun to hear you demo the new 5150 when it comes out. None of them touch an SLO though 😂
I like the Marshall 800's they just sound brighter to me. I have been messing around with them on amplitude. Some amps have the pre amp gain and it just seems to distort things more. The 800 is easier to play into then other amps I think. Very cool demonstration Eugh!!!
I had a JCM2000 but sold it. The JCM800 really sounds so much better to me than the JCM2000, but as always, everything is subjective. Eventually I only stayed with one amp, the Mesa Boogie JP2C and a Kemper :D
Glad you keep the TSL 💪i absolutely love mine even i cant crank it yet even with the bugera i got for it, so I like to switch to my marshall sl5. Thinking about the fryette power station to tame the Beast. Anyway thanks a lot for the work and the passion you put in your videos. Greetz from Germany 🤘
haha you're cracking me up from YOU laughing so much at how loud and hot they are! i had a DSL 40 watt combo that the front panel got so hot you couldnt touch it. apparently it was a design problem and some people experienced the solder joints actually melting from the heat in the first early combo models. some people added small PC fans to the back to cool them down. i always enjoy your vids! thank you, sir!
Another great video with killer playing and tones! JCM800's are fantastic amps, but there's just something about the Plexi sound that only a Plexi can do. You said in one of your previous videos, referring to a Plexi, that it's both raw and smooth at the same time. How that can be, I don't know, but that aptly describes the Plexi sound. And something I've noticed with Marshall Plexis and other older-styled Marshall amps is that at about "7" or 2 o'clock (not using your eyes) on the control knobs seems to be the magical point where the amp really comes alive. On another note...have you ever tried a Radial Engineering Tonebone Plexitube? Unfortunately they're discontinued. They're a relatively unknown and under-rated distortion pedal that works surprisingly well at getting a pretty authentic Plexi-type sound from a JCM800 or any good British-style tube amp. Cheers!
In a Plexi territory, Plexi is the king quite oviously. Otherwise, I like 800 the best. Glorious video, lot of fun. I would bet you were born in a sign of capricorn.

Thanks! Yeah I used to own one back in the day and it was a good one. Kinda like my JCM2000 TSL. Really versatile amp with tones from crystal clean to modern hi gain thing 👌🤟.
Curious what the big difference between Plexi and the old Marshall Super Lead MKII's is? I used to borrow my buddies (RIP) and what I'm hearing and how you set it up is pretty much the same? 100 watts and I used to bridge the inputs. Sweet spots on the volumes (using cabs in studio) was around 1 o clock if I recall correctly. It was very exceptional and he bought it new in the late 70's as a full stack with 2x 4 12 grey cloth cabs. Funny find with these is I took the backs off to see what the speakers were and surprised to find they weren't vintage 30's but 25w speakers? Also both cabs had the sides and bottom signed by Jim Marshall in pencil, as if it was a QC check. Wonder who has them now..
Plexi is just a general name for all those different Marshall amps that has the plexiglas front panel & four holes so 1987(50 watt) SLP(100 watt), JTM45 (30 watts) etc. are all Plexis 😎👌. 25 watt (or 20 watt) Greenback is the classic speaker Marshall used a lot on 60s & 70s. That & V30s are my favourite speakers. And Eminence P50E (which I have on my Fryette FatBottom 4x12) which is pretty much a mix of those two 👌.
Euge, do you think you could do a demo of the Marshall MA series heads? I know they get a bad rep but I’m interested in getting one because they’re usually found pretty cheaply.
Is that TSL 2000 kinda like the JVM 205h? When you said the crunch channel is the one to use because the lead channel is too modern I thought about always using the Crunch on my jvm because of that feeling. Honestly I thought the TSL sounded better than the plexi
I haven’t played with the 205 but I did a video (last year I think) where I compared TSL to JVM410 and if I remember correct they were pretty close. Yeah TSL is a great amp, and like with all tube amps, the more you crank ’em the better they sound. It’s all about that sweet spot 👌🤟😎.
euge, it would be so nice to see you tweek a 900 in the way that you do any other amp, just find your tone :D just cus the 900 is a sister-amp to the 800
Great video - love those cranked Marshall tones! I know the Suhr IR has a pass through to run to a speaker cab but that's full amp power to the cab, correct? What are you using to lower the volume going to your speaker cabinet so it's not so loud?
Great tones & playing man. Do you work on your own amps, service them, etc.? Do you bias them hotter or cooler? Are you in Helsinki? If so, you ever run into Kiko Loureiro? ;p
Thanks! I just play them and I have a guy here in Switzerland who does everything else (a good player too) 😎. I think he has biased them a bit on the hotter side but I’m not sure. If it sounds good it’s good 😊. I was born in Helsinki but haven’t lived in Finland in 10 years.
Helios is more versatile but only Marshall Plexi can do Marshall Plexi IMO 😎. But Helios is awesome amp and is pretty much like a modded Plexi & JCM800 in one 👌.
@@EugeValovirta230V gotcha. Was just curious how you felt the SLO and Friedmans of the world stacked up to the Marshalls you play. Which one is your desert island amp - the plexi or the 800?
It’s stock (except my tech fixed some grounding, and whatnot, issues long time ago) and I haven’t opened it in years ’cos it works like a charm as it is = I have no idea 😁.
What I come to think of Marshall amps is that you cant skip 2 generations and expect to exactly nail the sound of the first amp. However, the next generation can always come close enough to the previous one.
The thing I always enjoy about Euge is his unfiltered, authentic happiness playing music (and, especially, playing way-too-hot Marshalls).

800 2203 👌
Keeping the JCM2000?
Yes.
Does the TSL have a choke in its power supply?
It’s stock (except my tech fixed some grounding, and whatnot, issues long time ago) and I haven’t opened it in years ’cos it works like a charm as it is = I have no idea 😁.
@@EugeValovirta230V I mod my Plexis and JCM800s to sound wooley and snorkey.
Sick 🤘
What are you using to switch between amps??

@@EugeValovirta230V I meant the midi on pedalboard. I just saw you had a video on it maybe you say in it I’ll watch it today. Thanks
Oh that’s G-Lab GSC-3 👌😎.
@@EugeValovirta230V thanks I just bought one 😁
Is it me or the 1987x sounds a bit smoother than the others?
It is a bit smoother 👌.
What I come to think of Marshall amps is that you cant skip 2 generations and expect to exactly nail the sound of the first amp. However, the next generation can always come close enough to the previous one.
😎🤟
Hey Euge! Huge fan of your channel from the US. Have you ever made a video of the JCM900 100w Dual Reverb head? Would love to see you demo it!
Glad to hear man! Thanks!
Nope but if I get my hands on one someday then for sure 🤟.
The Marshall Model 1959 100-watt Plexi shouldn't have been called "Super Lead," it should have been called "Super Loud."
😁💪
🤘🤘
🤟🤟
👍
Nice!! Now crank it, ha ha
😁💪
The King is not Dead yet?
What do you mean?
@@EugeValovirta230V Is Jcm 800 still the best?
Yeah it was my first tube amp and still my go to amp for anything 💪. Well the three 800s I have 😎.
Pepita is a bit lethargic today!
😁
Good, Lord, That TSL of yours has the voice of God.
Good for you to NOT sell it. You have a good one, there.
Yeah it’s pretty damn good amp 💪😎.
I like your reviews but please BREATHE !!!
Glad to hear! 🙏
Would be a bit hard to live without 😎. So yeah I breathe as I breathe.
Poor REACT:IR :)
It’ll be fine after a bit of rest 😎.
