dear Sophie, when we travel & live abroad, immersing ourselves in another culture & making friends with the locals, it helps us realise that life can be viewed as an exciting adventure. It's a beautiful realisation & when I watch your YT channel I think you understand this too. Like you, I lived & worked overseas for 10 years, in 3 different countries & now I'm back in my home country for a while, who knows how long ... The best thing I did was to always live minimally. Moving from 1 country to another, a lot , re-affirms this every time. I've been back in my birth country for 1.9 years now & still, we've hardly bought anything. Here & abroad, we live in furnished apartments, I barely buy a physical book, we keep our appliances & belongings paired back. Keep it simple. It makes the going somewhere new that much easier the next time it happens. Freedom comes when we are unencumbered but rich in heart 🌈 Wishing you all the best in this transition of yours & I look forward to seeing you on YT 🤍
You are such a beautiful human being and I am so excited for your new adventure! Your positivity is so powerful and I look forward to continued videos! Best wishes on your move and things to come!
One door closes as another one opens! Wishing you and your husband great happiness in this new adventure! Please keep posting as you bring such joy to so many of us!🥰😘❤️
Oh Sophie... I LOVE Europe (lived in Spain for a year), but the Hawaiian Islands are my heart (lived on O'ahu for 5 years). I've loved your adventure abroad since you were so looking forward to it (and missed your Maui content)~but I can't wait to start seeing O'ahu as the backdrop for your slow living and minimalist reflections!!💖
I spent many years in Canada, till I couldn´t stand the homesickness any longer. I´d been holding back my desire to leave for so long, fearing the economic difficulties my country (Brazil) is going through, security issues, etc. Now that I did return (for 5 months at least) I feel like exploding of joy and happiness... all my stress, depression, psychological issues, everything is gone. The sun, the food and quality of life are amazing, and none of the bullshit, unstable jobs I was getting back there. Same here, it was such a RESET button in my life, and all of a suddent I got so creative and motivated, I decided to have my business, I´ve got so many ideas to do so much!! It´s magic.
Watching you video feels like you are talking to my soul. 5 years ago I moved out from my country and I can’t fulfill my PR requirement and now I have to move back to my country unless I continue as student which I don’t want. It makes me sad to move back and at the same time excites me.

I have watched so many videos of yours and I really adore you. I must say I am surprised, I didn't think you and your husband would move for a job, unless of course you need money or not completely in love with the place where you are living. Somehow I got a feeling Portugal disappointed you in a way, it would be nice to have a video of your expectations and reality, along with challenges met actually living in the foreign country. To me this video was not very honest, I don't believe you leave your dream country Portugal for a job. You live in your dream country and make it work there. Something doesn't add up for me. Nevertheless I wish you best of luck on your journey ❤
Dang, Sophie, you made me cry. Such a beautiful message, can't even imagen all of the feelings that you guys went throught during this time. Take care 💕
You know certain things in life are simply a season and I have learned that it‘s still equally a part of me and equally fulfilling as if it were to be in my life forever. Ironically, for me moving abroad intensified my love for my home country and my desire to branch out my roots here again. I can now be at home actually feeling at home, because I know the dream of living abroad became my reality and therefore part of me. Now, I feel a deep sense of peace and serenity.🙌🏻💫 you are brave!
I am 'old' and I will tell you, it is always okay to change your mind. The biggest regrets I have are following a path because I didn't want to look silly by changing my mind. I also had great experiences in Portugal, but know I wouldn't want to live there :)
“Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do, than by the ones you did do. So, throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Mark Twain.
OMG!!! First of all congrats on the job offer! Secondly, I just want to say as someone like myself who is very Type A/anxious type, this video gave me great comfort that sometimes things just change - and that's okay! Thank you for being vulnerable and honest and showing that things and decisions change, but that doesn't mean that the adventure is over. Looking forward to more videos from you :)
Life is so amazing isn’t it? In fact you didn’t leave Portugal because you carry your experiences in your heart. And a kind heart can hold many more experiences. Thank you. Obrigada. 🥂
First of all, congratulations to your husband. I could go on about how fortunate you both were to have the opportunity to live abroad but you seem to have a pretty good grasp of that. And like you said, another opportunity will present itself someday. So keep living your life and keep making good decisions and things will turn out very well for you both. It’s said that the two saddest words that can be said by someone are “if only”. Your outlook on life shows that you will never need to utter them.
I’m writing this with tears . . . not of sadness but of gratitude. I clicked on your video because of seeing Portugal in the title. I was born in Lisbon and grew up in Toronto, Canada (I immigrated with my parents when I was one year old). Your description of living in Portugal resonates with me. I am planning to retire to Portugal in a few years. What awaits me is an unknown adventure. Wishing you, your husband and dogs all the best in your new adventure. I’ve subscribed to your channel and look forward to seeing what the future has in store ❤️
As a Portuguese, thank you! You actually made me cry and miss my country (I live in the uk). Hope you guys are well and congrats on the job offer! One day you’ll come again, even if it’s just for a visit. 😊
Sorry to hear that. The past year (2022) has been insane for a lot of people due to war, geopolitics, and economic pullback (caused by global reserve banks pulling rugs under everyone's feet by hiking rates to highest level in a generation and now even the banks are failing and need bailouts). Welcome back home and I hope everything gets back into a more normal groove for you in due time. What a year it has been indeed.
You seems such a genuine and nice lady, but what i see here is that you're basically throwing away a chance to live in a country you love just to follow your man. And what will you do all your life if he gets another job offer in another country? You will continue to follow him around and give up what you want? Cause in the previous videos it seemed like Portugal (which is a really beautiful country) was the best and right place for you, I'm based on what you said in yours videos I'm not making it up. If what you said in the videos was really felt, in my opinion right now this is a very wrong message that you want to pass off as a good life experience. I understand that life changes but why people give up their dreams for their partner? It's good to make decisions together and come to a compromise sometimes that's what a relationship is all about when your partner is selfish and only makes decisions for what's best for him I would ask, would he do it for me? Would he give up a life and job he loves just because I got a big job offer in another place? And would it be right to impose it on him? I strongly doubt it, think about it women and be financially independent even if you love him, trust me it's not worth giving up what we want inside us for a person who has no problem thinking exclusively about what's best for him without considering our feelings, it is a very bad thing that will resurface over time, and this applies to both men and women. And if the love story ended what would you do? You'd think you left places you love and your goals just to follow that person and you wouldn't forgive yourself. I'm not referring to you personally because I don't know you that well but in general I invite you to think about it. I'm sorry because I used to follow you but after this video I won't anymore, you try to give life lessons in your videos but maybe you should reconsider your choices before do that and I say this to you honestly wishing you the best. There is a very nice Ted Talks video called "The pain of hiding your true self" by Ruth Clare which is about this, I invite all of you who praise this thing to see it and think about it.
There is a pleasure in the pathless woods, There is a rapture on the lonely shore, There is society where none intrudes, By the deep Sea, and music in its roar: I love not Man the less, but Nature more. I think that this poem encapsulates why we roam, and travel. Being with nature is key.
Wow. Watching this video, it felt like you were speaking directly to me. I teared up. I literally have five days to decide if I am accepting this opportunity in another state, and I’ve been really conflicted. This video has given me more courage to take on this new journey. Thank you.
It has been a journey for all 633k+ of us. I feel like I too have left a dream paradise only to return to what was once an Old life. Mrs. Sophie, the journey is long but you are not alone. Where you go, we are right behind you to lift you up for you have taken some us (me for sure) out of the darkness only to be brought into the light of a life that was once only a mere mirage in ones mind. Ciao, and I wish you the best.
This was really comforting. I wanted to move to Portugal too, after seeing you move there, and felt bad I couldn't. But after seeing this I feel comforted that things can change any second, it's better to just surrender and let life take you where it wants to. Thank you for your vulnerability. Returning to Hawaii feels like returning home, and the videos will be like before again. I like how you capture nature. Take care.
Good luck going back home to Hawaii. I missed your videos and was worried because you kept quiet for quite a time. I am so excited to accompany you in the next chapter of your life. Thank you for being here and sharing with us
This is literally happening to me as well! Except I bought a house so need to sell again . I spent 6 yrs planning on moving from the uk to Denmark. We finally moved last summer. It’s not gone according to plan and because of my husbands job we need to go back. So now I’m getting house ready to sell. Your video brought such comfort ❤😊
In my opinion, you r brave enough to let your country and come back without feeling guilty or shame Thanks for inspiring me .I take decision in looooooong time ,you encouraged me ❤ Congrats and take care ❤🎉
Thank you for sharing this with us! It reminded me that life isn't neat and predictable. I was in a similar situation, but with my career. I spent two years preparing for a career change, only for me to return to my original profession for practical and mental health reasons. I thought I failed horribly and my life was a mess, but looking back, I wouldn't be where I am now if it weren't for those detours and delays. I know "going back" to the places or situations we thought we said goodbye to isn't exactly easy! So hang in there and trust that you are indeed where you need to be and you are being prepared for greater things!
Lesson of this video: Always choose Money over lifestyle. If you live in an idyllic place, and you are offered MONEY (ie power) take it. And then make a dreamy video that makes the decision look soulful. Sure, it will look phony. But is there such a thing as phony anymore?
After tens of videos of 'how you don't need money to be happy, people and places count', we are back to square one when actually job/money does count... 'Go after your dreams' - was your husband's new job your dream or you were rather dreaming of happy life in Portugal...? Things are clashing a bit here... Anyway, hopefully that new chapter will make you happy!
I think we regret the things we don’t do more than the things we do. It’s been really enjoyable following your journey. Good luck with everything the future has in store for you. I look forward to the next chapter of your story:)
So you went from Maui, to Portugal’s coast, got established, fell in love with it, then looked for jobs on Oahu? Is there something missing from this story? Hawaii doesn’t pay well, there’s not a lot of work on Oahu unless it’s a state job, then again, it doesn’t pay well. The cost of living on Oahu is insane, the traffic is horrendous, the homelessness is off the charts, and crime has skyrocketed. I could see moving back to Maui maybe? But Oahu? I did 20 years on Oahu, the last 5 I watched it go down the tubes, moved BI, best thing I ever did. Got in and got property just before the boom. But, I’ve been looking at Portugal, to have all the things you mentioned here: an established culture of warm people who actually enjoy each other and live life fully in each moment. I’ve been all over the world, I speak three languages, one of them Portuguese, and I spent over a half decade in over 70+ nations traveling. Portugal is super special, trust me. Oahu? Oahu was culturally dead by 2010 or so I’d say.
Wow, this blew me away--your message was poignantly profound and beautifully told,.....it inspired me to not hold back and take a chance on my next travel adventure--so thank you, and all the best on your next new chapter in Hawaii.
I love your story-telling and your voice is very soothing. Your experiences in Portugal sound priceless, and now a new adventure awaits you in HI. I hope to follow your journey - an expat in the Philippines
I congratulate you guys🎉,I'm now living in Portugal 🇵🇹 from South Africa and at first I didn't want to move here till i had no choice but had to 😮and had left with few choice places to choose from and I finally chose Portugal 😊 and from the time o set my foot into the country, couldn't believe I was gone from my comfort zone and my lovely Africa 😮 wow I was so curious and expecting to settle in hardly but instead 😊i fell in love so quickly with the slow motion and quite environment and so old school yet delightful, original culture ,preserving their history and historic buildings, cuisine and much more...im enjoying and it has become my home now though i miss South Africa very much ,home is home till you find a new one and discover new places out of what you used to😊😊😊😊😊😊
I'm happy that you are content with how things unfolded, but was your husband looking for employment back in the U.S. without you knowing? Americans moving from the U.S. to Portugal is a huge move. I understand life happens and a lot is out of our control, but you made it seem like you and your husband were committed to Portugal. I just hope the average person knows that changing your mind isn't this easy. Most of us would have to live with the decisions we made, especially a decision like selling everything and moving to Portugal. Hopefully, you weren't in the dark. I wish you the best. 💜
True and every move is a very personal decision. Sometimes offers come up, though, out of the blue - especially in this remote work world. Ask me how I know? Signed, Born and raised Canadian who lived in Ireland for 20 years and is now living with my Irish husband and kids in California:)
I moved to Spain and sold everything. It was hard to return to the US, because I was used to my salary in Spain with their lower cost of living and suddenly needed to buy a car too. Thankfully, I met my husband and moved in with him. I'm assuming they make all of their money through remote work so they can easily move around.
Oh I know I don't have the right to judge at all, I don't know anything from a 9 minute video, but why WHY do I have this terrible feeling of you not wanting to go back? :-( it just doesn't feel that it's not what YOU want... oh I'm sorry... I hope everything turns out good for you
I was so emotional watching your video and it gave me goosebumps. What a journey this life is. We open one door and before you know it another door presents itself . I am grateful.
Malama, Portugal was a beautiful adventure, and a new one will start! I'm also contemplating the idea of moving back home (to Portugal), but I don't know if it will be temporary or permanent. Only G. knows. Best of luck to you. ♥️
Your story is very moving. Your writing; video and editing is very skilled. Thank you for sharing your story in such a delicate way. I too fell in love with this magical place in 1984 (before social media and the now popular it’s) on my first visit from California. I am now a citizen (making my home in the north). Again thank you for sharing your journey, and helping me to appreciate mine.
Shame you had to leave portugual, you left a highly paid job to have a more harmonous life style, yet your husband is doing the opposite it seems. When will people realise money will not make them happy. Good luck anyway.
I moved to Portugal 20 years ago and enjoyed every day of it. One of the beautiful and safest places in the world. Lovely people make you feel welcome and the food is great. I am so grateful to have the chance to live in Algarve among my Portuguese friends.
Portuguese people can make you feel welcomed & appreciated even in your own country! They are beautiful people, and a cut above many Europeans you could meet!

This video has stirred something inside me. Watching it has evoked strong emotions and reminded me of my lifelong dream to visit Lisbon, Portugal, and experience living in a foreign country. Your words resonated with me when you said that it's not the location that makes a place special, but its people. 'Life is meant to be explored,' you said, and it's true. I'm always scared, and I want to overcome this fear that holds me back. Thank you for sharing this chapter of your life. It has inspired me to be courageous and bolder in embracing life. Life is too short to waste, and if something doesn't come our way, it doesn't mean that our life will stop. There will always be another door and adventure waiting for us. Everything happens for a reason. If we stay in our comfort zone and don't embrace change, we'll never know the people we're meant to meet, the moments that will move us deeply, and what life has in store for us. So let's take that risk, and embrace that adventure because every moment of it will be worth it. ♥
Life is indeed unpredictable. I love the way you showed us how to embrace the unexpected and appreciate what you did experience. Good luck on your new adventures.
It's crazy how life works. But like you said, I'm sure you'll return one day. Keep learning Portuguese so you'll be amazing at it when you get back there. 💞
Congratulations, Sophie, on your adventure. And good luck on your new phase back in Hawaii. I agree we need to take leaps onto the unknown throughout our lives at certain times and will be surprised in many ways. Certainly better than to hiding in a safe yet unfullfiling place

It’s all a journey. You’re right where you’re meant to be. I wanted to move to Italy. But now I’ve changed my mind. And that’s okay. We all are doing our best in each moment of our lives. The grass isn’t any greener on the other side of the fence. It just appears that way. There’s really no place like home.❤️❤️
Thank you for this moving message. This video came to me the day after I decided I need to leave my job, and my fear has been telling me all the reasons I should stay. Thank you for reminding to me be courageous and embrace change and the unknown.

You know ppl with type a personalities live on average much shorter lives?
Life is so amazing isn’t it? In fact you didn’t leave Portugal because you carry your experiences in your heart. And a kind heart can hold many more experiences. Thank you. Obrigada. 🥂
There's comfort in knowing that it's always in our hearts ❤️ thank you :)
Life happens when you make a decision! So boom! Excited for your next chapter 🙂
Words of comfort 😁 thanks Damon!
Life definitely doesn't work out as we expect sometimes but we leave a little piece of us wherever we live to rediscover one day ♥️
Hello Keren.
It's almost as if Portugal was a practice run for what's to come! ❤
As a Portuguese, thank you! You actually made me cry and miss my country (I live in the uk). Hope you guys are well and congrats on the job offer! One day you’ll come again, even if it’s just for a visit. 😊
The way you tell things , it's really wonderful.. You can make anything rhythmic and magical ❤
This is an amazing story! I now understand that some risks are worth taking, thank you for sharing your journey!
It's true 🥺... I want to go back to my country too.
There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society where none intrudes,
By the deep Sea, and music in its roar:
I love not Man the less, but Nature more.
Thank you.
Sending you courage to make the best decision!! ❤️🙌
❤️❤️❤️
This was really comforting. I wanted to move to Portugal too, after seeing you move there, and felt bad I couldn't. But after seeing this I feel comforted that things can change any second, it's better to just surrender and let life take you where it wants to. Thank you for your vulnerability. Returning to Hawaii feels like returning home, and the videos will be like before again. I like how you capture nature. Take care.
I'm sure you made the best decision! A new adventure begins and I do believe it too...one day you will be back in Portugal ❤️
The synchronization!! I wish the best for you guys
Strange cos looking for a job before moving is the norm...
Strange cos looking for a job before moving is the norm...
@@cazpk6840 thats what everybody said :)
@@MalamaLife thank you. it has been stressful as we need to sell the house... Hoping you are settling in.
In my opinion, you r brave enough to let your country and come back without feeling guilty or shame
Thanks for inspiring me .I take decision in looooooong time ,you encouraged me ❤
Congrats and take care ❤🎉

Thank you for sharing this with us! It reminded me that life isn't neat and predictable. I was in a similar situation, but with my career. I spent two years preparing for a career change, only for me to return to my original profession for practical and mental health reasons. I thought I failed horribly and my life was a mess, but looking back, I wouldn't be where I am now if it weren't for those detours and delays.
I know "going back" to the places or situations we thought we said goodbye to isn't exactly easy! So hang in there and trust that you are indeed where you need to be and you are being prepared for greater things!
I had the same situation sister trust me you will eventually find your happiness in what you're doing, love from India❤
Everybody should live abroad for awhile. One learns more when out of the comfort zone.
Agree with you.
I admirer you and your husband on the determination to make dream comes true. Wish you the best for next adventure ☺️
Thank you so much
Lesson of this video: Always choose Money over lifestyle.
Thank you! I actually never say that you don't need money to be happy. Being intentional with money is the goal.
I became incredibly emotional watching this. Tears streamed down my face. I don't quite know why...I will need to sit with myself over this one!
You left Portugal and it’s amazing lifestyle for a job offer? A JOB OFFER?!… What can be more American than this?
Agree 100 percent!!
What makes you think they care about your opinion so much? 😂
@@DMshell17 idk, what makes you think I care about yours? Probably the same answer applies to both.
Her husband got a good job offer that’s why they’re moving back. They’re young and can always go back to Portugal later.
Hey ChatGPT, why'd she leave Portugal?
Answer: Her husband got a job back in Hawaii.
Cool. Next video!
❤️
You are trading one Paradise for another.. what a lovely life you live..
So true. Very grateful
This story is so familiar.. very common for youtubers, the moving.. to create contents and gain followers just a thought 🤔
I congratulate you guys🎉,I'm now living in Portugal 🇵🇹 from South Africa and at first I didn't want to move here till i had no choice but had to 😮and had left with few choice places to choose from and I finally chose Portugal 😊 and from the time o set my foot into the country, couldn't believe I was gone from my comfort zone and my lovely Africa 😮 wow I was so curious and expecting to settle in hardly but instead 😊i fell in love so quickly with the slow motion and quite environment and so old school yet delightful, original culture ,preserving their history and historic buildings, cuisine and much more...im enjoying and it has become my home now though i miss South Africa very much ,home is home till you find a new one and discover new places out of what you used to😊😊😊😊😊😊
This makes me feel so better. We are leaving in 2 weeks, and I have been anxious about the move. Worried that I will miss SA not like it there
I'm happy that you are content with how things unfolded, but was your husband looking for employment back in the U.S. without you knowing? Americans moving from the U.S. to Portugal is a huge move.
I understand life happens and a lot is out of our control, but you made it seem like you and your husband were committed to Portugal. I just hope the average person knows that changing your mind isn't this easy. Most of us would have to live with the decisions we made, especially a decision like selling everything and moving to Portugal.
Hopefully, you weren't in the dark. I wish you the best. 💜
True and every move is a very personal decision. Sometimes offers come up, though, out of the blue - especially in this remote work world. Ask me how I know?
Signed,
Born and raised Canadian who lived in Ireland for 20 years and is now living with my Irish husband and kids in California:)
Thank you for watching
In a transition period contemplating a big move myself as single mom. Thank you for this valor
I love that so much.
Portuguese people can make you feel welcomed & appreciated even in your own country! They are beautiful people, and a cut above many Europeans you could meet!
To start a new chapter in your life is always magical🥰
I saw your video while I'm deciding to leave Spain to go to Australia🐨 Feeling nervous, excited and grateful🌸 Buena suerte en vuestra nueva aventura🍃
I am Australian, living on the Gold Coast! I hope you absolutely love it here! 💕
@@michaela5388 Thank you Michaela🥰What a coincidence I am just deciding on the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast or Byron Bay areas because I want a quiet and familiar area near the sea🌊
Wishing you all the best 🙌
I lived 3 years in Portugal, and I too love the Portuguese people. It's like everything has a season
That’s why Brazilians are such nice people. Their ancestors came from Portugal.

And from Africa. From Italy. From Germany.
Portugal seguirá ahí si algún día queréis volver 🙂
Congratulations, Sophie, on your adventure. And good luck on your new phase back in Hawaii. I agree we need to take leaps onto the unknown throughout our lives at certain times and will be surprised in many ways. Certainly better than to hiding in a safe yet unfullfiling place
Going through a big unexpected life change as well and the way you told your story brought me peace and excitement. Looking forward to following along in your new chapter !
Wishing you the best of luck as well ❤️
It's incredible that you dreamt of moving and living in Portugal and despite all the planning and complications, you actually did it! Huge success! I think you'll be living back there. Time flies (^_^)
