Ugggh. As a Gen X person, I am so sorry! I always tell myself if I EVER start saying, "Back in my day..." Please just put me away. I grew up hearing all of that BS from my toxic boomer parents. It was made worse because I didn't feel safe to come out as queer until last year. No. No. No. I cringe having Gen X frequently glumped together with the boomers, but maybe we deserve it. I wish all young people the best. We handed you a sh*t show. 😢 I have no children, but a Gen Z niece and nephew and I'm there for them in any way I can be. Don't feel bad for saying back in my day things. Just as long as you aren't toxic about it or use it as a put down. For example, I'm Gen Z, so back when I was a kid, iPads were like really cool. Kids now seem to be on them all the time. I don't think they should, they shouldn't depend completely on the iPad for entertainment or education, I think more parents should actually like, you know, parent?

I'm convinced that what Boomers want more than anything is to be told that their horrible childhood experiences were normal and fine. They were strong for suffering in silence. It breaks them when they hear that hitting kids etc. is abuse, because then they have to reckon with the reality that what happened to them wasn't normal, it wasn't okay, and they're a victim. If telling men that they can't cry etc. is bad, then what happened to them as children was bad. They can't handle it. Years ago I left Facebook when I reached my boiling point after an old friends mom was posting non stop about how legalizing cannabis is going to cause kids to become drug addicts. She kept sharing these articles filled to the brim with misinfo, and I started to comment before deciding you know what, its better for my mental health if I just remove myself entirely. Since then I've slowly deleted all my social media. Its very freeing, and none of us "need it" as bad as we think we do.

but the best thing i ever did for myself phone-wise was replacing my phone with an actual alarm clock. one that doesn't doesn't demand i engage with other people. cuz you know that feeling when you wake up naturally and you kinda live in your head in lingering-dream solo mode for a bit? you brain needs that time, chemically speaking. the second you look at your phone in the morning, you brain will instinctively switch to outside mode, cuz it knows you're preparing to engage with others via the phone. you're wondering anyone wants to talk to you or if they need you for something. it made such a huge difference to both my sleep and my mood when learned that, and i've just started shutting my phone off at night.

My Papa told me once "If I was out after the streetlights had turned on I'd get in some real trouble.", so yeah I think the joke is that kids don't go outside enough to know that..? But people have portable phones with the time on them now, so no kid with a phone (which is most kids, at least kids at the ages parents are comfortable with them being out alone at nowadays) would need to know that. The point of the streetlight one is that back when our parents played outside with friends, they had a lot more freedom and the general rule was "be home when the streetlights come on." It's funny though because my mom and other people her age would talk about that all the time, but were too scared to give us the same freedoms. It wasn't that we didn't want to play outside. It was the growth of the 24 hour news cycle and fear mongering. (For context, my mom was born in the early 70s, my dad in the late 60s, and me in the mid 90s). Now with the rise of cell phones, I'm seeing more kids being granted a bit more freedom again since parents can get ahold of them any time anywhere (though of course helicopter parents still exist and not every kid wants to play outside as much with the rise of cheap and fun technology)

I graduated high school in 2012, which was early social media days, and I was horrendously bullied my sophomore year to the point I had to transfer schools for my last two years. A lot of bullying took place online - I even got physical and death threats and people posting literal crimes they were wanting to commit on me on Facebook. I'm now nearly 30 and am working on this with my therapist, but "kIdS these dAys are ToO sEnSITIVE"

The street lamp meme was because kids would know to come home when they came on, not that kids don’t get out enough. You had a really good interpretation, though.. I never thought of it that way. ❤

so that streetlamp one you were on the right track uwu~ its actually bc like my parents generation (born in the60s/70s) ((also i was born in the 2000s so)) used to play outside until the streetlights came on so they'd have to book it home, just like how there were ads that were like "do YOU know where ur child is???" would play.

the streetlamp "meme" is in reference to being told you had to be home/come in from playing outside when the streetlights came on. you were on the right track with the "kids these days dont go outside" assumption, though!

Physical fights are actually a big problem in Aussie schools, especially between girls. I graduated in 2020 and a girl in my year literally bought a knife to school to threaten her ex. So... Idk what Aussie school this post is referring too...

9:18 I think this meme is talking about kids who spent all day outside, with their only rule to come back “by dark.” That means, when the street lamps turned on, kids would have to rush home to get back before it was completely dark outside. While it’s much less condescending, you could argue that the world that the previous generation created isn’t safe enough, or was never safe enough, to let children just run around with no supervision “until dark”, especially with the constant tearing down of natural surroundings, like trees, parks, hiking trails, and fields. It’s all paved now. :(

9:18 I assume it’s referring to the “get back home before the street lights come on.” I’m only 23, but my mom told me that. My brother and I joked that when the lights came on you had to book it home so you don’t get a whoopin

8:05 it's funny how they used "I" to describe themself, since it's a pronoun and they 'don't have those.'

I just turned 40 this year and I have to say that when I talk to old friends they are starting to have these "back in the day" or "this new thing I don't get is dumb" and it's really annoying. I've started ribbing them about it.

Man, I wish I lived such a life of absolute privilege to where I could sit around getting offended or pretending to get offended over other random people who I don't know, have never met or may not even exist, getting offended.

The street lamp being on means for kids to come home (similar to the tv ads asking parents if they knew where their kids were)

yup on the Do you know where you're children are ad.
I remember there was small joke in the Mask Animated series that said the time and the quote: DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR CHILDREN ARE?
I think with the different news channels in the late 80s they had different celebrities say this phrase. The main one that stood out to me that I've come across on RUclips was this one that was done by Grace Jones.

The street lamp meme- kinda made me laugh. Cause it does imply that kids don’t go outside. BUT the lamp is on, which means get yo butt home. (Because no phones to tell you to get home so we had to get home when the street lights come on) I was born in 1993 😅.
Also, love your videos. You crack me uppp.

9:49 I think what this was meaning is that back in the 90’s or so when kids played outside all day most of the time when the street lights went off they had to immediately go home! I think that it was a reference to the old rules some held :)

I’m with you, but the street lamp thing is a reference to parents making sure their kids are home by the time the street lamps turn on

The street lamp one is because older people were told as kids to "be home by the time the street lights came on."
Legit know this because my own parents used it for me in the early 2000s.
They stopped saying that once I got my own cell phone in 2007

The street lamp one made me giggle. For those who didn’t get it, a lot of kids in the 70’s 80’s and 90’s were told to be home when the street lamps came on. I think I even was told that at my grandmas house when I was like 7. It was a huge meme about how millennials were the ones that were out of touch with reality. It was before gen z was old enough to be made fun of as a generation and millennials were, as they are now, the punching bag. But honestly millennials asked for it. (I say this as someone born in 95)
