So I've been told I'm "mid-size" (Read: too fat for skinny people, yet too skinny for other fat peopl) but I still get treated poorly because of my weight. The biggest one is that I've had undiagnosed joint pain for YEARS now and I've been trying actively for a while to get a doctor to do literally anything. At this point I'm trying to get a family doctor, because I've had walk in doctors/nurse practitioners do everything from telling me to just "eat healthy and work out" to telling me I'm "just too chubby" and trying to prescribe me a DIARETIC.
It's so disheartening, I'd just like to be taken seriously

I'd probably be considered "mid-size" too and I also have undiagnosed joint and muscle pain (to the severity that I sometimes use a cane). I'm lucky enough to have a PCP that listens to me even if she doesn't know what's going on, but I've gone through a lot of doctors and nurses that said to just eat healthy and work out or attributed my health to my weight. The thing is, I lost a lot of weight and I still have these issues. I think doctors and nurses need to be better equipped to work with plus size people. If thin people can have the same issue, surely that means that this pain exists regardless of weight and it should be looked at through that lens.
I hope you get the treatment you need and deserve and that your pain is taken seriously.

(5'2 at 184) But two years ago I dropped down to 144 and I've been bouncing around 146-150 since. I'm classified as mid-size too, but I still get told I need to drop a few. I'm at the point where I'm like I feel pretty healthy maybe your outdated BMI scale can go to hell.

I've been mid-size my whole life and had a lot of health problems growing up, specifically within my joints causing mobility issues. Long story short it took me not being able to walk during college for a week for doctors to take me seriously, because they thought I just "wasn't working out enough". It was found out that my brain was growing in my spine from birth and my health was ignored soley because I had a slightly heavier body type than "average". I could've been paralyzed. You're in that spot where you don't belong anywhere and nothing fits or suits you and if you do get attention from society it's negative still because you're overweight even if you're not "really fat". I've given up going to the doctor anymore because I get so glossed over with a "lose a little weight and you'll be good." This is so disgusting.
Like 5 or 6 years ago, I contracted an infection that went undiagnosed for almost 10 months and I almost died from it. During this time, I lost 60 lbs and was sooooo skinny but in a sickly my cheeks and eyes are sunken in type of way. I can't count on my hands how many people kept telling me that I looked really good, despite me losing hair, having huge reddish purple blotches all over my body, physically shaking, and having very pale yellow skin. I looked good to them, as I was f*cking dying, because I wasn't fat.
So when I recovered from it, I got a job cleaning houses, busting my ass 6-8 hours per day, plus ling weekend hikes, and daily 3-5 mile walks after work AND eating very clean. I STILL gained all of the weight back. I discovered that because of the shock and trauma that my body went through with endocarditis, I had developed hypothyroidism. And then I started hearing whispers throughout my extended family about how I've put on weight. It was like, no matter what I did, I still gained weight. I wasn't lazy and I was more active than I ever was when I was like 115 lbs. My body just didn't care. I had struggled with an ED for about 10 years by that time and just recently sought treatment for it because I was completely ruining my body.
I just really hate how these people think that they know your situation based solely on how you look. I have been doing a lot of exercise to stay healthy since I have a few heart conditions and I want to live a healthy (for me) life, but due to those conditions, I tire out easily and the hypothyroidism makes it seemingly more difficult to lose weight, despite taking medication. And I really hate that I feel like I have to validate why I look the way that I do and feel hat I ned to prove to these yahoos that I am doing what I can.

Her argument that she “used to be fat” but lost 40 pounds is SO. IRRELEVANT. I *did* used to be fat. I weighed 330 lbs. I now weigh 175. I *know* what it feels like to have all eyes on you, being afraid to eat in public, hell even *walking* was traumatic for me. I wasn’t fat because i was lazy or unhealthy, and i sure as hell wasn’t ugly. I have so much sympathy for these people they are talking about, and honestly i just feel so sorry for them that they have this mindset that fat = ugly, unhealthy, lazy. I will continue to fight for rights for fat people, especially medical rights, as i know how it feels and i never EVER want to make anyone else feel that way. Just care about people, man.

    2 times i experineced medical fatphobia :
I had extreme bone pain . I went to so many doctors . All focused on my weight while i was on the verge of becoming paralysed because of how horrible that pain was .
It wasnt until i went to a dermatologist that he gave me blood work after i told him about the bone pain .
Turns out i had an extreme vitamin d deficiency , which pushed my body to break down my bones for calcuim .
That pain that felt like knives scraping my bones from the inside was my bones disintegrating . And all doctors focused on was ur fat ur fat ur fat . Even after i lost some weight they didnt take me seriously .
Thank god i was able to go see that dermatologist , bcz i had already started to feel my spine on the verge of snapping , and i could barelt walk by that time .
He gave me the medicine i needed , no pain meds . The pain completely stopped within a week . And i was able to walk normally and exercise like i used to . (I was in a pro swimming team so i was very active but i was still fat cz i had an eating disorder)
However , i still have weak bones , my teeth are fragile , and my joins arent fully recovered yet so i still have some joint pain .
They let me suffer for more than a year because they couldnt order me a simple blood work since they were so busy talking about how fat i was.
The second time something like this happened to me is during PE in school .
I never skipped a day of PE even when i was fat . But during my 2nd year of middle school i started developping heart palpitations and difficulty breathing . It got so bad that i would pass out every time we did PE .
Doctors also kept telling me ur just fat , lose weight lose weight . For the whole year and it only kept getting worse .
On the 3rd year of middle school , i blacked out again , and the PE teacher was furious at how my mother didnt want to pull me out of PE altho i was passing out every PE class .
She told him she didnt believe i was passing out and thought i was lying because i was "lazy and didnt want to work out" .
The teacher called an ambulance as i was passed out , they took me to the ER . Turns out i had asthma . This whole time i had asthma and so many allergies that affected my breathing . And i also had inherited a heart condition from my grandma .
But apparently i am a lazy fat lier .

Doctors have ignored them for decades because I'm fat. my current dr (who actually listens) is sending me to cardiology because I might have POTS. 21 years undiagnosed just because of my weight that has been a struggle due to PCOS. My current dr also got me a spinal MRI that I've needed since I was in a car accident at 20 to discover the undiagnosed spinal injuries that have slowly taken away my mobility over the last almost 20 years. I'm finally seeing specialists for it, but it's too late to do much more than manage my chronic pain and try to keep my mobility from disintegrating further. I used to walk 2 miles a day (even as fat as I was) now I can barely walk a block without my cane or walker. Medical fatphobia has literally destroyed my body and rendered me disabled.

The part that always irks me about this is when people say that being fat is a choice you make and that you're just lazy. I'm a bit overweight myself and have several health and mental health issues that cause that to fluctuate pretty drastically. But my biggest example of why that is so untrue is my mother.
My mom is a certified fitness instructor who works out 6 days a week, works 3 jobs (only one of which involves sitting at a desk, the other two are very active, one being the fitness instructor job), and has one of the healthiest diets I've ever seen! The woman has bought specific bowls just for her salads because she eats them so much! And guess what? She's considered obese. If you looked at her, you would absolutely know that she is overweight. And she has dealt with issues like the woman on the plane and other places that are not fat people friendly. She is one of the healthiest people I know, but she is overweight. She has struggled with her weight her whole life and ended up having her thyroid removed because of cancer. But you wouldn't know that by looking at her! These bitches would look at her and call her lazy and that irks me to my core!

I really do not understand why people can't just not comment on fat peoples bodies. It's not that hard to not say anything - yet they never miss out on the slightest chance of contributing to fat phobia. Probably the number one argument they use would be ''I comment on your body cause it's unhealthy'' yet no one asked them for advise on nutrition nor do they ask skinny people if they have a healthy relationship with food. If you don't have anything nice to say just don't say anything, it's not that hard. If a fat person does not ask you for nutrition advise don't give it to them. Also most of the time the nutrition ''advise'' wouldn't be real advise but be just insults - It makes no sense to me

Absolutely agree! Also: the comment 'it's unhealthy' is also so lame. Many things in life are not healthy. Yet when do we ever see people point out the same 'unhealthy things' like they do to somebody who is fat/overweight/weight in general? Barely ever!
I've had discussions about this before, and people always come up with the same reasons as to why things like partying, drinking and/or taking dr*gs every once in a while are okay and something they don't say shit about. Why? 'It's different'.
Which might be very true because it's not the same thing as being overweigth, but it for sure is still not considered healthy.
Like why does the health of some fat b*tch matter so much, when you don't have the same energy for your friend who just drank 12 glasses of alcohol? Why is that 'different'?
It isn't different when it comes to things being considered healthy, yet people tend to often do those same things as well (drinking, partying, taking dr*gs) and don't want that same judgement (that they give fat people) passed onto them.
People never have anything to say after that. They rather just say 'I was trying to help you' (because pointing out that somebody is fat is a such a big help 💀) and move on to a different subject.
As a fat b*tch I get so much judgement for just existing. It's wild, and people will go through hoops to justify being nasty to me just because of my size.

@@mimibee626 You missed the point of the whole video. It isn't about losing weight is bad/good. It's your weight should not affect how people treat you or your opportunity. I am 5'10 and over 200 lbs, and that is a healthy weight for my body type. A DOCTOR TOLD ME that if I was under 170, that was an issue. Different body types have different weights that are healthy for them. Unless you are their doctor, mind your business.
Unless I don't understand the emphasis on CONGRATULATES. ED recovery is very difficult and of course should be encouraged! Even if you don't have an ED, weight gain can be great for you. (Again, 170 would be an unhealthy weight for me.)
And about the movement blaming "white men" and people who "diet and lose weight", that isn't the reason people are criticizing them. White cis men are the people who hold the most power, and they are the most likely to push the false narrative that "Fat people, or gaining weight, is always bad!". And they aren't made at people who diet or lose weight. They are mad that is the expected thing to do for every fat person, regardless of genetics, body type, blood disorders or other health issues.
This all can be wrapped up with: If you aren't a doctor, and don't know their medical history MIND YOUR BUISNESS! I don't mean to be condescending, this is just what everyone needs to do.

(spoiler alert it was not) And when I talked about how I ate about 800-1000 calories per day and was excessively exercising, the dietician said I should raise it up only to 1100-1200 and that I was doing well. That entire appointment validated the idea that my disordered habits were good and about 2(?) or so months later I had lost about 35-40 pounds from my habits. My mother had her suspicions so she took me to an eating disorder clinic and I was diagnosed with anorexia. It’s safe to say we never saw that dietician again. Ignorance sucks, man.

This is a similar experience to mine. On the couple of years I was not "overweight" (according to BMI 🙄), I had a raging eating disorder. Like my resting heartrate was about 35bpm and my hair fell out. My doctors described this as "healthier" than carrying extra weight and pretended literally alarms didn't go off every time someone hooked me up to a heart rate machine. But these women would be fine with it, because me slowly dying didn't inconvenience them on an aeroplane.

As someone who used to weigh 400 pounds, but now maintains around 190 pounds, on the edge of the "normal"/"overweight" categories for my height, I have such mixed feelings about the Body Positivity movement, mostly the HAES section of the movement.
Fighting against medical fatphobia is one thing, but spreading the misinformation that extreme obesity doesn't cause increased risk for other conditions or that weight loss/maintaining weight loss is next to impossible is just irresponsible.
Doctors often focus way too much on weight as a factor in health, to the exclusion of other possibilities, but weight is a large factor in your health, especially at the extremes and does need to be taken into account.

I think the problem with long term weight loss is how much your life circumstance and environment play a role. How many hours a week do you work? What type of job? How much stress? How many fast food places on the way home, cost of groceries, who are your friend/family? So many factors that are so hard to control. That's the problem. Having reasonable advice for what you can and cannot change and having reasonable expectations is important.

@@Pensnmusic Yeah, it's definitely not an easy thing to do, especially for the first few years, it requires a lot to build up the new habits that allow you to maintain, especially considering the prevalence of hyperpalatable food and the limits on access to whole foods in modern society.
Also, the prevalence of fad diets and diet culture have warped the public perception of how weight maintence should work. Losing large amounts of weight over a short time, with an overly restrictive diet that isn't sustainable is not healthy and is almost guaranteed to lead to regain.

I definitely hear you. As someone who has a history of disordered eating and yoyo dieting, I like the idea of haes because it acknowledges that weight isn't always the most important aspect of health. Like me attempting to actively lose weight right now would throw me back into such unhealthy eating/exercising habits and poor mental health patterns that it would be more damaging to me overall than just accepting my body the way it is and focusing on improving my health in whatever ways I can. And I think part of why haes is a thing is to encourage people who are fat to still take care of our health at whatever size we are and not to just assume that our health is a lost cause unless we can lose weight, which is just not always possible. But I also agree that many people misunderstand this and think we're saying that there are literally no health risks to being fat or benefits to losing weight, which is definitely not the case. For some people weight loss really can improve their health, and I'm super happy that's gone well for you.

    • @VioletEnds
      @VioletEnds 2 года назад +22

@@stellablake6200 Yeah, I know that a lot of the HAES community view HAES the way you do, and I have no issue with that view of it, and I'm glad that it's helped you find a way to focus on your health that works well for you.
The problem is that many HAES influencers have made claims that don't necessarily reflect the same understanding of HAES that you and much of the HAES community may have, and reach into the realm of medical misinformation.
And because those people have a large voice and are seen as representing the community by the larger public, those views have unfortunately become associated with HAES in the public eye.

They're convinced that being fat is inherently wrong, and that everyone who is should make an effort not to be. They are hard on themselves still and fear gaining weight again more than anything. Basically, they are projecting their insecurities onto others and are convinced that they're doing the right thing

Absolutely! They talk about this reality a lot on the Maintenance Phase podcast. Having been formerly fat and losing about 1/3 of my weight when I was 17, a lot of what you said is correct: for many years, I *did* hate myself still, and I held a lot of anti-fat bias and judgment towards fat people. Eventually, I realized that I didn't lose weight because I was more hardworking or whatever- I lost weight because I STARVED myself and gave myself disordered eating for years to come.
Continued reflection and reading on this topic led me to learn how deeply embedded anti-fat bias is in healthcare and society overall, to the point that we don't acknowledge how being overweight can be a protective factor in many cases. More than that, I learned that, jeez, some people don't WANT to lose weight or change how they look and that's absolutely fine!!!
TLDR; former fat person who lost 50lbs through basically starvation but lied to myself thinking it was due to hard work, thereby allowing judgment of fat people and fat bodies. Former fat people are indeed some of the most rampantly anti-fat. I realized how fucked up this all was. I've grown a lot since then, I promise!!!

@@pidu4588 If it's only an American issue, then clearly eating habits alone doesn't cause this problem. If it's only happening in one place, then obviously there's more to the story.
A lot of western countries have more restrictions on what sort of things they can put into their food that they sell at the grocery store. Even the "healthy" food that's marketed towards Americans isn't really that healthy and is just nothing but a scam. And in a lot of places, even if you want to eat healthier, you don't really live near any proper grocery stores. If you look at a lot of small towns, often the only kind of places people can get food is from places like The Dollar Store, and in the cities, food deserts are a big problem.
Plus, in most western countries, the cities tend to be more walkable than most parts of the US.
It's not that non-Americans are just more conscious about health. To maintain a healthy weight and avoid obesity, you need proper nutrition and exercise, and it's a lot easier to do that outside of the US than it is within. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's certainly more challenging. I've heard stories of people from European countries moving to the US and gaining weight after being there for just a couple of months, and I've heard Americans who have said that when moving to some European country, they've actually lost weight, even though they didn't really go to the gym or make plans to work out. They basically lost weight without even trying. When you have better access to nutrition and you're basically forced to walk everywhere more rather than forced to drive your car everywhere, you're gonna be physically (and probably mentally) healthier, even without meaning to.

Then, in late 2015, she was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer. The surgery to remove the tumors caused her to lose almost all of her sight and triggered Cushings Disease. Her body was producing excess cortisol, any amount of sugar treated as ten times as much by her body. Her weight and health spiraled out of control. Type 2 diabetes, gangrene from minor scrapes, permanent bruising. Some tumors reappeared in 2018, but pneumonia took her before the cancer could.
It was not only painful to watch such a positive, amazing person deteriorate rapidly over four years, but it was infuriating to see the way people looked at her whenever we were in public. Luckily, she couldn’t see the disgust or outright disdain on other’s faces. I wanted to scream at those people - what happened to her was entirely out of her control. Whenever I hear talking points from these "Anti-woke" "conservatives," I find that my mind automatically goes to a counter-argument related to Japanese culture and society (I'm Japanese.) For this specifically. The sport of Sumo. I've never once heard these people bring up Sumo, when it's always the first thing that comes to mind for me. Sumo wrestlers eat healthy, they're active, they consistently consult with nutritionists and trainers, and most relevant to the topic, they're all obese. They deliberately, in a controlled environment, eat to gain weight. They're living contradictions to the arguments that fat people are that way by their own shortcomings, and are therefore putting themselves in an unhealthy condition. (Which let's be real, they don't care that many obese people are highly susceptible to cardiovascular diseases, etc.) People can just eat healthy and be fat. I know American/Western culture comes from a different perspective with unhealthy foods being most accessible, but eating, unhealthy or healthy, causes weight gain. How shocking.

nope. It's still unhealthy, to be strong you have to have a lot of fat which is very hard on your body. The strongest weightlifters are very fat and what about it? They are also on steroids, just because you are strong doesn't mean you body is fine with it. They usually die earlier (weightlifters do too). Their heart is overworked. Their organs are fatty, they have metabolism issues from the sheer amount of food they have to consume. You can't eat healthy and be fat because to be fat you gotta eat more than your body needs, simple as. Overeating, not eating causes weight gain, it's just calories in, calories out. When are you people gonna understand this

Because you're right, it's not, but when people say X thing is "good for you" or "bad for you" , they're not saying you're an inherently better or worse person because of it, what they mean is that it's beneficial or harmful to you.
And yeah, you can't help your chronic illness, you'll never be truly healthy, but health isn't this standard that, if you don't meet it, you're inherently a bad person or unworthy of respect as a human being or whatever. It's about taking care of your body, for your own sake, because at the end of the day you're the one living in it, and you're the one who's gonna suffer the effects of poor health, even if your poor health is for reasons that are beyond your control, so why wouldn't you want to do what you CAN do (regardless of how little it is) to maintain the highest level of health that you possibly can reach?

These women are so awful, honestly. As a thin person myself, I’ve definitely noticed that society has conditioned many, many people-myself included-into seeing fat people in a worse light inherently, or hearing ‘fat’ as a dirty word/insult rather than a neutral descriptor.
As I see it, the societal programming is similar to how many people grow up with internalized homophobia, racism or transphobia-sure, fatness can be controlled to a degree by the individual, but there’s nothing inherently wrong or abnormal with weighing more or less than another person, just like there’s nothing wrong with someone loving the same gender. We’re just conditioned to see it as ‘abnormal’ and in a negative light.
As a thin person, after noticing this bias in myself I’ve been working to unpack and get rid of it so I can be a nicer, more accepting person in the long run, and I’m sure that there are many, many more people who need to do the same. After all, most thin people are born into families that are also composed of mostly thin people, which only perpetuates the problem.
Anyways, unlearn your biases as best you can because it’s a lifelong thing and society conditions you to be mean and catty like the two abhorrent women in this video, so just try and be nice to people

Speaking as a healthcare worker, The ONLY criticism I have of body positivity is lying about science, which most people in the body positivity movement don't participate in. If you're 600lbs, you're (usually) at risk and i don't believe in lying about that. But that's your healthcare workers problem, not random people. If a person isn't your patient, SHUT UP!
And if you ARE a healthcare worker and the person in question IS your patient, you must remember that the problem isn't even the weight, its the secondary conditions that put the person at risk. If they don't have secondary conditions and they have normal blood pressure, normal heart health, normal everything, don't address their eating habits, activity levels etc. And if they are at risk, the goal is to help their heart, or whatever it is, NOT TO GET THEM TO LOSE WEIGHT! Weight loss may or may not happen when they improve their health, but its irrelevant. As long as your patient is healthy, their weight doesn't matter. Most importantly, if their condition has NOTHING TO DO WITH WEIGHT, don't talk about their weight!
Why shouldn't people feel beautiful? Why shouldn't people have access to equal healthcare? Why shouldn't overweight people be treated with respect and kindness instead of mocked? IF their health is at risk because of weight (BIG IF, because thats almost never the route of the problem) SHAMING IS THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO! I've seen patients turn away from healthcare time and time again because they are ashamed of something. It doesn't matter if it's a skin condition, a lack of rehab/homecare for an injury or anything else, self love is the answer, self love is what gets them in front of a doctor. Shame has no place in helping anyone with anything, especially not when it comes from random people who don't know what they're talking about.

So how should a healthcare professional talk about crippling back pain or diabetes without mentioning the weight? This is where these movements look silly and childish. I'm not suggesting anyone mock them in a medical setting, but to offer treatment without discussing the cause is poor practice, whether it's an allergy or a virus or carrying extra weight. Be happy, feel beautiful and when you see a doctor, expect a matter of fact, honest discussion about the causes of your symptoms and how best to reduce them.

However when you have a patient in your office for what ever reason and the patient is obese it is your absolute obligation to inquire about their activity levels/eating habits/weight gain/loss history etc. Why? Beacuse obesity is basically in itself a disease. If a person doesn't currently exhibit any, as you would say, secondary issues, the risk of them developing said issues in the future is higher than a person with healthy weight, especially if they stay obese or gain even more weight. E.g. you have a patient coming in for chest pain (or whatever) and you notice a suspicious looking mole on their skin, you wouldn't just not say anything about it/examine it just because that's not the reason why the patient came in. The same is with obesity. You can say what you will and I am all for accepting yourself as you are and loving yourself and being confident in your body but people can not simply deny basic science and medicine and cherry pick certain medical findings just to fit their narrative. Basically facts don't care about your feelings.

@@TheKim369 that's exactly what I'm saying. Type 2 diabetes is a secondary condition to eating habits and poor exercise habits, as is osteoarthritis of the knee or back pain due to the center of balance being changed from excess belly fat. So you address the poor eating habits and exercise habits and design a better routine/diet that addresses that and weight will most likely decrease with that. You can be totally forward about it too and you don't need to dance around the issue.

@@laryda I think we are on the exact same page. I can't stand the "health at every size" argument because it's not true. You can be 50lbs overweight and have ZERO health issues related to that. Zero high blood pressure, zero body pains, perfectly healthy, and I think that's the time that a healthcare worker needs to let that be, but if the patient is over 200-250 lbs, there's definitely going to be a secondary health condition that is caused by the poor eating habits and poor exercise habits, whether it's high blood pressure, heart issues, mobility limitations, osteoarthritis, back pain etc. When designing a healthcare plan for the patient in that case, the goal is to get rid of/treat the high blood pressure, back pain, type 2 diabetes, whatever and the treatment for that is definitely going to involve exercise and better eating habits. A natural consequence of that will be weight loss. For most patients, you can use a scale/weight loss program to hold your patient accountable for weight loss, but it's actually better in most situations to hold the patient accountable for the specific health issue that they have come in for like using the blood pressure cuff/insulin monitoring or measuring a reduction in anterior pelvic tilt (that's basically the cause of belly-fat induced back pain.) The result is the same, the patient will lose weight, but giving more emotionally sensitive patients accountability goals based on something other than weight can be more motivating.

@@lisapeesalemonsqueezah3241 Yes, I agree. Health at every size is a complete absurdity and blatant denial of crystal clear medical facts. What is more, it is utterly weighing down the fat accaptance movement and just making it less valuable and genuine. Were it not for that, I believe it would be much less ridiculed than it currently is.

I don't like the BMI thing either. I'm 5'2" and almost 180lbs. Medically I'm considered obese, but you wouldn't be able to tell from looking at me. I look a little overweight, sure. But certainly not obese. Even at this weight, I've experienced fatphobia by a former doctor. I changed doctors because of it. Now that I'm pregnant, I'm worried how much I'll gain and scared I'll be shamed because of it.

i hope you've had a healthy pregnancy experience and sorry if i'm replying late and you didn't but yeah BMI is bullhonky and you sound like you're a size that would be ridiculous to criticize. if you gained, your body and baby needed it. i hope you have a good doctor now

Friendly reminder that the M in BMI just means mass. Not fat specifically. Being obese means you are out of the body class norm doctors (though BMI was created by a mathmatician for literally just calculating how much human is on a human) arbitrarily setup going by average numbers of a small sample size group. It's barely health science at this point, it's just math.
