and the being fat is inherently bad fallacy too. As I've learned from the podcast maintenance phase, being fat isn't necessarily bad for everyone across the board. Older people benefit from having fat as it cushions otherwise bone breaking falls. Fat people are more likely to have heart attacks but they're also more likely to survive them as well. Its called the "obesity paradox" but its only paradoxical if we assume fat people cant also be healthy or that being fat cant be beneficial, which is the prevailing rhetoric towards fat in the body.

For real. I'm thin, always have been, and I have so many health problems slowly breaking my body it's disgusting. When I got diagnosed with leukemia, I was laying in my hospital bed and a nurse walked in, stopped dead in her tracks, and literally said to my face, "Oh my god. You're the absolutely healthiest looking sick person I've ever seen!" To this day I still don't know how to feel about that interaction. On one hand, it's always nice to get a compliment. But on the other hand, I'm lying there not even knowing if I'm getting out of there alive and my looks are the farthest thing from my mind.
It was strange, that's for sure. A big downside to it, though, is that even though I still look very nice (my modeling days are long over, though, that's for sure) it masks how garbage I feel literally every second of every day. Sure, I look fit and healthy, but you all missed the 5 straights years I spent puking my brains out first thing every morning. All this rambling to say, don't judge a person's health and how they feel physically just by looking at them; ask us how we feel and believe us when we tell you the truth.

I was eating probably under 800 calories a day while working 8 hours in 100 degree heat lifting and walking all day. I was very thin, but I was absolutely not healthy. I would get faint all the time, I got sick every few weeks. I gained back 15 of those pounds through eating ENOUGH healthy food and lifting weights. I feel 100 times better.

So I'm an ICU nurse and COVID treatment coordinator: the issue is not with weight, really. It's about lifestyle choices. You don't have to be thin--just be healthy at whatever size you are.
Also, I developed orthorexia/anorexia athletica after using MyFitnessPal. I have body dysmorphia as well. I distinctly remember crying on the gym floor after working out for six hours straight because I couldn't burn the EXACT amount of calories I'd eaten that day. Diet culture is fucking dangerous. There are plenty of naturally skinny people that are horribly unhealthy. Weight is not a reflection of health--HEALTH is a reflection of health.

Compared to like $50ish dollars gathering all the ingredients to make a home cooked meal. You can exercise and still weigh 150lbs+ and thats ok. exercise not resulting in a thinner body shouldn't discourage regular exercise because not getting skinner doesn't mean exercise isn't worth doing. Some bodies are just naturally inclined to be bigger and there may be nothing you can do about that but no one's body is naturally inclined to have lower cholesterol levels, a healthy resting heart rate, lower blood pressure, which are worth exercising for on their own and are things you can take control of.

Mickey was talking about how she knows religious people who are not like Paul and Morgan, and asking what's the difference between Paul and Morgan and the nice Christians that she knows. People with fundamentalist personalities/mindsets/whatever you want to call it - they need everybody else to be just like them. It's like if you don't live your life the way they do - be that religion, diet, sport, sexuality - they take that as a criticism or rejection of their choices. My mother started in on me at age 9, right about the age I started menstruating. She had a thin mother who made her feel shame for being fat and, by damn, she wasn't gonna let me feel ashamed of being fat. So she put me on Weight Watchers...at 9 years of age!
My whole family (mom, dad, paternal grandma, aunt, & uncle) joined Weight Watchers, which was unrecognizable compared to how it is today. I don't really know all that's entailed in doing Weight Watchers today, but back then, you went to an actual storefront (with a big sign 😝) and had an in-person meeting. There was a very public weigh in, where you're weight was written down. It was publically announced what ever weight change you had had that week. Then you went into the big meeting room to listen to what was supposed to be a motivational talk from a paid member who had reached their goal weight (don't get me started on goal weight). My family took up a whole corner of the room, with me on the front row.
My food intake was strictly monitored and I was shamed at home if I ate something that wasn't "legal". You didn't get points so as to get choices back then either. It was the plan or nothing. By age 11, my weight hadn't changed but I had "grown into my goal weight." Lucky me, now I was on maintenance!
I'm convinced that, had my mother left me alone, my natural puberty weight gain would have gone away naturally and I would not be the fat person that I have struggled with my whole life. I'm 57 now, and around age 50 or so, I decided f*ck it, I am the way I am. I was making myself both physically and mentally ill trying to be something I'm not. My weight hasn't varied more than 5 lbs up or down since then. As long as I don't let my mom get on my nerves about it, I'm pretty happy with my body and the way I look. All things considered, I'm pretty healthy, too. No high blood pressure or diabetes or heart disease. So, yeah, f*ck diets! I have better things to do than weigh me and everything I eat all the time.

BMI is some bullshit. The scale they use was collected from a sample of white men in the 1950s. So 1 - it’s not super accurate for people who aren’t white men (for example, there have been many studies that show people of African decent tend to have higher muscle percentages that would make their BMI “higher” but not impact their health); and 2 - It’s not super accurate for people born after the 1950s (which is most people alive today. People on average are a lot healthier and have access to higher quality foods than in the past. This has caused people in most parts of the world to be both larger and taller (getting a much more nutritious diet basically from birth)
AND! That doesn’t even account for the fact that having excess fat doesn’t necessarily mean your health is going to be impacted. Women have lower rates of heart disease because our fat tends to distribute more evenly around the body (having a lot of belly fat makes you more at risk for heart disease), and people who are fat are usually only likely to become diabetic if they are genetically predisposed to the disease - which isn’t everyone.

bmi is such a headwreck. Everything below 20 is unhealthy and causes infertility (unless, sometimes, if that's your set point) but the fact that 18.5 is green on the chart just sits in the head of millions of people with a BMI of 20 and makes them diet, which, in 95% of people, causes them to gradually increase their set point and put on weight over the years

I have been medically obese since the age of 11. I work out consistently, I move consistently, I eat a healthy amount for my body, I drink water, I take my meds, I take care of my body and my mental health. The way society places weight as the end-all-be-all of health makes me so mad! When I was at the doctor's office a few months ago, a woman sitting beside me was talking to her friend about how stressful her life had been in recent months and revealed that she had lost almost ten pounds because of it. Her friend's immediate reaction was "good for you!", as if that made the stress worth it...

Same. It is very hard for me to gain weight and when I‘m stressed I lose even more. And guess what? I don‘t have any fucking energy and feel like shit aaaaall the time if my weight gets too low. A good thing for me to keep my weight at the higher end of my weight range is exercise. Working out gets nearly impossible though when you barely have enough energy to get up a couple of stairs. I hate when people comment on my weight. My parents started to get better at leaving me alone but they used to tell me I was too skinny or getting too fat almost every time I saw them. The line between the too skinny and too fat comments was like 4 kg. Insane. Just teach people how to be healthy (e.g. having fun moving your body and eat balanced and healthy without restricting yourself) without focusing on weight. It’s not that hard.

When underweight I was complimented and taken more seriously for the issues I had. When overweight I'm dismissed and the culture at large pushes shame at me, and everyone else. Like, as you said actual research doesn't support the fat = unhealthy narrative, but even if someone is unhealthy and fat? That doesn't make them any less valuable or deserving of love and respect! people are literally genetically predisposed to need different amounts of sleep, and this can be further diversified by mental illness/neurodivergence, profession (ie how much mental and/or physical labor you do in a day), chronic illness, etc.
The average range is 6-8 hrs for adults. But some people /literally do/ need 9 or 10hrs of sleep to feel rested. I'm one of them. I used to have so much self loathing around sleeping late or oversleeping because I thought it made me lazy. It's ridiculous. When I was a kid in the 90s, I noticed in the white Southern Baptist Church I attended a conflating the whole "your body is a temple" with a 'Godly' need for thinness. I never heard any Bible verses about obesity, I just heard church leaders say our bodies were our temples. Over the years, I've noticed various forms of evangelicals share that idea, as well as a need for fitness.
As an adult I'm just a casual observer of both (mostly) white fundamental religions and also exercise. I notice a lot of comingling between God and religion and CrossFit in my area. I'm sure this extreme "temple" ideology is at least partly feeding the fat phobia & the connection between fatness and Satan.
Edited to clarify I attended a whited Southern Baptist church. There are non-white Southern Baptists and evangelicals who do not require their women to be thin in order to be godly wives.

I do not think I have read or heard anything talking about obesity in the bible. To be honest, most evangelical Americans worship the toxic aspects of our culture as "God's belief". It is rooted heavily in American exceptionalism and manifest destiny (AKA colonialism). Their belief in a healthy body probably only pertains to a specific frame that is favored in white women-- which is a thinner bone structure and extremely slender. A lot of people in general but especially bipoc do not have that frame. I have been watching youtube videos on this by nonwhite creators and they complain about the fatphobic prejudice against their body even when they aren't even fat at all. Oh no broad shoulders. Oh no someone without a perfect hourglass figure.

Back in the Middle Ages being overweight was ideal because extra weight meant you're wealthy and not starving working fields. Churches supported that and all too happily collected money from the wealthy with "you're totally going to heaven" (the Bible actually says the exact opposite, but plenty of Christians don't read it themselves).
Now that gaining weight is much easier and being skinny is a symbol of wealth in a bunch of places (in the west, at least), would you look at that, churches are abusing people's desire for higher status and linking being overweight and being poor and calling those bad things. Then they take donation money from rich skinny donors and tell them "you're totally going to heaven and your fatphobia is the right thing, Jesus says so".
Obviously that's not applicable to every case (ain't no Evangelical church calling out men in power for their weight, for example), but there's definitely a trend of churches telling people what they want to hear to encourage phobias, hate, holier-than-thou attitudes and "your bigotry is good, actually". Churches aren't in a vacuum from society, they know hating overweight people is in fashion now.

I’m a prime example of weight NOT equaling health. I lost 30+ lbs DURING Covid due to heavy depression. Prior weight loss, my blood levels were pretty good. I worked out 3 times a week. My endurance and muscle mass was off the charts. I was fat! Post weight loss, my cholesterol has drastically changed for the worst. I am more unhealthy now than I’ve ever been before. I have no stamina and no muscle.
People need to accept that peoples’ bodies are their own. No one else’s. How can they judge a person by size alone? They can’t! I’ve even had people say, “At least you lost weight, the depression wasn’t for nothing!”

Oh I bet it's because you probably don't eat properly!" and all of this with a huge smile in his face... and when I manage to get some weight back because my mental and physical health are better: "wow girl you gained so much weight! carefull not to let yourself go like this!" when I had gained like..max 10 lb. People are far too comfortable talking about other people's bodies. A group of friends was talking about the discussion around weight and one of them mentioned that, when seeing her ex-boss for the first time in months, the first comment he made to her, not even saying "hello" was "you look like you've lost weight." Bodies should not have different moralities assigned to them, and you shouldn't even need to be "healthy" to be respected and allowed to exist. As someone who is chronically ill, "healthy" looks very different to me than to someone else, and these people just by looking at me would think that I am a bastion of health. No one owes you to look a certain way and it's baffling how people can still think like Paul and Morgan.

When I realized that my body was starting to limit myself (I felt lethargic, my calves hurt when walking/standing too long, short breath, etc) I decided it was time to make some changes to feel better. I did lose weight in the process BUT, it was the lifestyle change that helped me, not the reduced body fat. I felt stronger, more flexible, just better in general. And guess what? I was still fat then and I'm still fat now. Those people who have never experienced being obese will never fully understand how it is, just how I'll never understand how it is to be considered underweight. They should know their place and not speak on what they don't know unless it's to respect people just existing in their body.

TBH, I feel like in order to start being healthy and caring for one's self health (body, mind, heart and spirit), one has to be able to let go the shame with being overweight. Like removing weight-loss as a goal for a healthy lifestyle. If you just so happen to lose weight, then you do. Losing or gaining weight should not be celebrated or shamed.

What bothers me is when someone loses/gains weight via adapting a more healthy lifestyle, and then they get shamed because “they should have loved their larger/smaller body more.”
This happened to friend of mine, and I got upset on her behalf. I told her “Don’t listen to them. Your body was beautiful then, and it's beautiful now. Clearly, you love your body because you’re taking care of it. You’re being healthy, and this is how your healthy body looks. Besides, truely loving your body means loving it regardless of its size; it means treating it right. If that's what you’re doing, keep doing it.”
Praising someone for their drastic weight change when you know it’s from a serious illness can also be very upsetting/harmful. It’s like saying “hey, your size is more valuable than your wellbeing. You should feel proud that you’re this size now, even though it came at the expense of your health and happiness.”
This is also an experience another friend of mine has had. She went from average to underweight, against her will, and was quickly showered with compliments on her thinness. It made her feel even worse. She said “I hated being that size because it meant I was sick and unhealthy. All I wanted was to gain the weight back and get better, not be told how ‘lucky’ I was.”
When I advocate for healthiness, I’m not advocating for a size. There is no one “healthy weight.”

But it depends on the person, their genetics, disability status, lifestyle etc. and it’s not as big of an impact that people believe AND MOST IMPORTANTLY it’s not your business if a stranger isn’t being healthy or as healthy as they can be. It’s called body autonomy! And it’s treating fat people like objects just showing us means “promoting” our bodies? What? Gross. Also the gym is a breeding ground for what spreads coronavirus! As someone who's skinny (most likely because of hyperthyroïdism and because anxiety and depression mixed with sensory processing dissorded makes eating really hard at times) this type of commentary still makes me very uneasy. I lose weigt BECAUSE I am unhealthy, when I am at my worst, and I get compliments for it. It makes me feel uncomfortable, it feels like people are encouraging me to be sick and unhappy just for what they were told to value. And of course when I finally gain some weight back, people point it out as if it's a bad thing. As a skinny person, I really want body diversity to be valued and I encourage it at every opportunity (also to overall don't comment on people's weight). I need body diversity to be aknowledged in the media because if people can accept that fat doesn't mean unhealthy, they'll come to realize that losing weight isn't necessarely good either and will stop encouraging unhealthy unhappy people to stay unhealthy and unhappy. (to be clear, I am not saying that my life is in any way close to what a fat person has to go through, it's just to point out that everyone needs body diversity and this type of discourse isn't "healthy" for anyone)

Especially the "calories in, calories out" got me deep into bulimia. That being said, I'm not going to down the Paul and Morgan route of telling everyone to do this, because just as in your example with you and your mom, what works for me won't necessarily work for everyone else...in summary, only you know what is your best approach to being a healthier person, and no two experiences in that area are alike

Listening to Morgan talk reminds me of how fucking miserable I've been for thirty-two years of my life being raised as an evangelical and embracing it. I realized recently that I was just so fearful and miserable because I was never good enough, I was never sacrificing enough, if I was enjoying something too much was it becoming more important to me than God, on and on and on. So I recently decided to let go of what was making me miserable. I don't know where I'm at faith wise at this point but I can't express to you the level of freedom I feel not constantly obsessing over whether I love God enough, whether I'm sacrificing enough, whether this is enough or that is too much, ad infinitum. I can just LIVE.
I feel sad for Morgan because here she is thinking God is telling her she has to give up sleeping and wake up early and basically make herself miserable to prove (probably more to herself than to anyone else) that she loves God enough. That way lies misery. I don't think God's plan for you is that you have to make yourself miserable to prove you love Him enough.

Most white evangelical churches are "not racist" but you better not try being anti-racist or make them uncomfortable in their naive "I don't see color" narrative. My fat phobia in medical story is this: I went to a clinic that specialized in endocrine issues (heart disease, diabetes, and hypothyroidism) to have some tests done (this before I was diagnosed with my rare disease when we were trying to figure out what was wrong). The chairs in the lobby were so small that when I stood up (I'm overweight), I got stuck! It was so awkward to try to pry the chair off my derriere. For the tests I needed a hospital gown. They didn't have any in my size. They only had SUPER small ones and didn't even own any other size. They had to tie 3 together to cover my body! When I asked why a clinic with lots of overweight clients didn't have plus size gowns or decent size chairs in the waiting room, the PA said they DIDN'T WANT TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO BE FAT. It was humiliating to have the nurse have to tie gowns together to cover my body and it DIDN'T change my health at all. I still have a rare disease that makes me unable to lose weight. I never went back to the clinic. That's a solid NO from me.

I once got stuck in an amusement park ride after the dude pushed the safety gate so deep into my stomach it couldn't be pushed down again to open it. Fun time to have a group of kids laughing at you while the workers try to desperately push the gate deeper into your fat to open it. Fun fun. Getting stuck to things is the worst thing, even if it's only for few seconds like with a chair.

Recently found your channel and I love it. This video in particular speaks to me, since a) I'm healing from growing up in a fundie context, and b) currently working on healing my relationship with my body image and food. (Disclaimer: I would likely be perceived as thin even now that I'm heavier than previously, but I still have baggage I'm working through.)
Your point about them speaking about your real life like it's a thought experiment reminds me of how people talk about trans folks as though none of us are in the audience. (I'm a trans man.) Definitely anger-inducing.
I appreciate your thoughts and knowledge here, and your facial expressions are so validating and help lighten an otherwise rather triggering (for me) video. :)

@@MickeyAtkins Thank you so much! Didn't expect a personal comment but thank you for taking the time to leave a response. :) To elaborate on what I said earlier, I recently got out of an abusive relationship where food control was part of the abuse, and for that reason, as well as stress/fear, I was much thinner than I am now. So the past year I've given myself permission to eat intuitively, whatever and whenever I want to, and it's helped a lot. To me that's a positive outcome that I hope will brighten your day as well. :)
Btw you're totally right about their views not being integral to religion. (I admit I wasn't quite done watching when I left the last comment so I have a couple more brief thoughts.)
I've converted to Paganism in my adulthood, and like Morgan (....ish) I believe that I hear directly from Deity, but in my case, my Patron God often encourages me to do things that promote my selfcare and wellbeing, and He's helped me a lot in healing my self-esteem and trauma. (Fwiw this is quite common in my community of Pagans who converse with our Gods in the way I do.) And I know from experience that (in my belief) Deity can sometimes ask very difficult things, which can feel like a sacrifice, but what Morgan's describing seems to me like she's taken that kernel of truth and twisted it into a self-hating joyless fundamentalist framework, where those Godly requests are based on fear and shame instead of a foundation of love and trust and mutual respect. (And fwiw my Gods have emphasized that I need to have boundaries, *even with Them*.)
      Thanks again for the video!

Because it kind of goes against the laws of physics? The mass of a person has to come from somewhere, and assuming you’re not sucking in the building blocks of tissues and water through your skin, the mass of a bigger person is probably getting into their person through oral consumption.
There are some people with fast metabolisms and health conditions that allow them to eat whatever they want without gaining weight. There are also health conditions that make it difficult to lose weight, or increase water retention, or make it so that people can maintain their weight with very few meals. So yes, it’s hard to believe that fat people are still fat and they don’t eat “anything”. They definitely do eat something, and relatively recently, or they wouldn’t be fat, they’d be anorexic and starving.
Or maybe they don’t eat much a lot of the time, but go nuts with highly calorie dense foods on a day or two of the week. Binge eating exists and a lot of us don’t realize or choose not to care about how many thousands of calories we can ingest while not actually eating a lot of food.
I’ve been fat my whole life, i get that it sucks, but we didn’t get this way by not eating anything. That’s physically impossible.

    • @johnnycranknose4098
      @johnnycranknose4098 2 года назад +6

Well if someone eats nothing it’s impossible for them to gain weight because you can’t make mass out of nothing. I agree with the sentiment though

@@kariak55 Except it doesn’t, your knowledge of bodies and/or physics is just oversimplified. The body is not a closed system, for one.
But even then, okay, where is the energy the skinny person gets from eating going? Many skinny people eat a lot and don’t exercise, yet stay thin. By your logic that is impossible, yet you seem to be fine with that hypothetical.

In February 2020 I did an 8 mile full moon snow shoe hike. In march 2020 covid took my health. Even now, my heart, brain, etc are all trashed. For recovery, I'm on a super restrictive diet (basically potatoes and water) now for the most part of 6 months. I was a big, strong middle aged lady, but because of illness and restrictions, I am dropping weight. It's so amazing how I feel like a melting ball of neuro issues and tachycardia, but people just comment on how good l look. How healthy I look. Fatphobia is so ingrained in our culture.

When I had severe postpartum depression my wonderful MIL came to visit, made wonderful food for me and to this day her shrimp and orzo is my comfort food 🥘 when I have a relapse day. Food is always emotional, and this realization you gave me helped me learn to be nice to myself emotionally when it comes to food ❤❤❤

I’m late coming across your channel Mickey but I want to say that it’s so great to see your videos breaking down toxic ideas that are pushed by the church. I am a Christian that has found faith again after deconstructing it due to being hurt by the church over and over. When i hear Paul and Morgan speak, i wonder if we are really even worshipping the same God.
I attend an open and affirming church now that focuses on coming together as a community to worship, love first, and spread the hope of Jesus. My pastor recently gave a sermon about how NOTHING that we can do (physically, career-wise, mentally) could make us any more deserving of the love of God than we are right now. Our weight and physical appearance does not change our worthiness. It was so profound to hear a church finally preaching that we are enough and are loved the way we are. He also told me that people preaching like P&M bother him because as Christians we are called to be Christ-like, not “biblical” or telling everybody else exactly what they should do based on the Bible. That’s not our place. So on one hand it’s amazing to see this side and feel comfortable in my faith, but it’s disgusting to see people doing the exact thing that kept pushing me away from the church on such a public platform.
