14:03 - To see improvements of tinier pulse widths you may want to increase the moving speed. On TestUFO at default ~1000 px/sec motion speed anything sub 1 ms MPRT won't be visible because its too slow. At 540Hz, PG248QP 10-100 pulse widths (2.5-25% duty cycle) are 0.05-0.46 ms MPRT, meaning you'll need speeds between 20520-2160 px/sec to spot all the pulse differences. Decreasing refresh rates will help too, but since 360 Hz is minimum that would only change speeds to 1440-13680 px/sec. That's how much speed PG248QP can handle without motion breaking appart; well at least the persistence part of motion. Crazy stuff!
I'd say anything above ~4000 px/sec is unrealistic case to eye-track on a 1080p 24" display. And main goal of motion blur reduction is to reduce eye-tracking induced motion blur. There are no benefits from such feature if not eye-tracking. We could say it's kinda overkill MPRT. However it will come in handy for higher resolutions.
Even so, you need a baseline to compare with other monitors and for that the default 1000px/s is sufficient as it gives the viewer a sense of relative clarity between different panels... or maybe Tim should start comparing 240+ Hz monitors with 2000-4000 px/s :-)
@@KennyT187 I'd love to see that at least for strobe modes. I've seen pictures of PG248QP ULMB2 at 1920 px/sec and crosstalk really starts to look different. But even for standard sample-and-hold modes slow speeds can hide alot of ghosting too. 1000 px/sec is easy to camera-track and even easier on higher resolutions. However it very quickly became insufficient. Default speed would probably need to adapt as display industry evolves.
Unless I'm missing something the Avg GtG (so best case scenario) response time was 2.31ms which is 432.9Hz. How do you run a higher refresh rate than your pixel response rate without causing issues?
@@cincybeck You are missing something. Average GtG was 1.8ms on normal OD, and 1.59ms on Esports mode. That's 555Hz and 628Hz, respectively. On average, with the esports mode you have over 90% compliance with the refresh rate. That's absolutely outstanding.

Yes, we recommend 1920 pixels/sec for strobed pulsewidth tests, since:
2ms MPRT = 4 pixels of motion blur at 2000 pixels/sec
1ms MPRT = 2 pixels of motion blur at 2000 pixels/sec
0.5ms MPRT = 1 pixels of motion blur at 2000 pixels/sec
1920pix/sec provides an amazing way to show 0.5ms MPRT and 1.0ms MPRT is actually human visible.
That color gamut and contrast from a TN panel is actually nuts. We've come a long way from the washed-out abominations of last decade

Excellent review Tim! I'm guessing this officially makes the 4090 a 1080p GPU. BTW, there's a point at which I can't notice the visual improvement as refresh increases. However, I can always feel an improvement to input latency. Not sure I'd go back to 1080p for 540 Hz, but I'd definitely consider TN again if 540 Hz were available at 1440p, and a bigger panel.
spending 1000€ on this monitor makes no sense. I would rather wait 1 year for Oled 360hz, because it will be enough to defeat this monitor.
refresh rate creating close to perfect smooth image seems to be at 1000hz, it is the human brain/eye creating ghosting on sample and hold screens that is the biggest reason, otherwise i think that 500hz would be enough.
latency improvement is also depended on the game engine, cyberpunk has high inputlag vs other game engines at same fps.
but there is a input lag test you can do and then convert the ms results into fps.
think it all falls between 500 to 1000 hz/fps when you feel no input lag, see no ghosting and smooth image.

Nope guarantee you'd still be massively cpu bound even with a 4080 at 500 fps targets. Apex would be the only argument if the game wasn't capped to 300fps anyway. Actually no I get like 200fps at 1440p medium with a 3060 ti.

Great review! I'm not going to buy one of these and especially not with those silly g-sync modules modules but the improvements in usable refresh rate are impressive.
It's awesome to see for just straight up higher Hz and pushing refresh rate higher. I'd expect and hope 1000Hz is straight up OLED though. But OLED monitors need to have proper feature set, so BFI, DFR and proper port like DP 2.1.
I'm not sure 1000Hz is actually needed. I mean I understand a lot of people will say we don't even need more than 60Hz, but with the 500Hz limit being crossed, I think we really are at the very edge of smoothness that the human eye can perceive and going further will require exponentially more expensive hardware for differences that are either indiscernible or extremely tiny.
@@EvilTim1911 actually, still benefit that is visible at 1000hz. We had lcd garbage for far too long, some don't know the crt smoothness even. We've only got back to it with some fastest lcds lately. To keep it short, there is whole thing about it on blurbusters site.
360 and 500 hz oleds are upcoming and being worked on already. Do 2.1 is literally required after a certain point.
@@EvilTim1911I've heard 1000 hz is where they say peak performance is. But as you said some people are like omg no 30 is. So I wouldn't be surprised that once we hit 1000 you can definitely see th difference with 2000. And the hardware is fine. You can already get close in games like cs vallie and rainbow. There are some even older or shittier games where you can pass 1000. Obviously this isn't intended for 4k Ray tracing on a brand new AAA title. It's for basic shooters.

I'm finally upgrading from my old Acer XB270HU 2k 144hz IPS monitor, and ordered Asus TUF VG27AQM1A 2k 260hz IPS monitor for $385.
I hope you guys in Australia can get your hand on a unit soon as I am interested to know how does it compete to the MSI/LG/Gigabyte 2k 240hz IPS panels.

When you get OLED refreshing at this frame rate, you will have a display that handles motion within a stones throw of old school picture tube displays.

I mean there are diminishing returns, because like the jump from 240 to 360 is in terms of smoothness bump not equal to the jump from 60 to 144, but it's way, way less deminishing then people make it out to be. 240 to 360 and 360 to 540 are still very noticable jumps even when just talking about smoothness

This monitor will be significantly clearer.
OLED is not magic it's still a sample and hold display technology like LCD. 540hz is 1.85ms of persistence blur, 240hz is 4.2ms of persistence blur, it's to big of a gap in raw framerate for OLED to match 540hz. The 360hz 1440p OLED coming out next year probably will be very close.
Already compared by Optimum. This smokes the oled. Next year there's going to be 360 Hz QD-OLED and 480 Hz OLED. One of them will probably reign supreme.

This. I've tried the 27" 1440p360hz PG27AQN IPS w/ULMB2, 27" 1440p240hz PG27AQDM W-OLED (which I've settled for due to zero eyestrain and personal preference, and my main productivity panel being the PG42UQ made the switch to non-OLED too glaring), as well the Zowie XL2566K w/DyAc+ (1080p360hz). I also have an A95L and definitely agree that QD looks much better - especially glossy.
crazy to think the top rigs can get 540 fps, and actually have a display for it now!
540 fps is definitely achievable in esport games where this monitor is intended for😸
Please do the new Dell Ultrasharp U2724DE. It's a bit different, it's an office monitor, but Dell upped the ante with 120hz refresh, it supports HDMI VRR and it's IPS Black (much better contrast). It doesn't compete with current recomendations but it would be an interesting monitor to review.
i noticed the hyperx armada 25 is listed in these charts, but i don't recall you reviewing that specific model - just the armada 27. did i miss the review? my local micro center has the armada 25 for $130us & it seems like a pretty great deal. armada 27 for $180 is also a good value imo.
I've heard the Acer Nitro XV242F uses the same panel as this without the gsync module at a much lower price point. Looking forward to its release worldwide.
Based on the review it sounds like VRR might top out at 500Hz. Though IMO 480Hz is the sweet spot, as it still allows 24fps videos to play smoothly.

@@Issvor the problem is that non-matching Hz causes constant stuttering to the video. Ideally you would match the content's FPS. And generally it's better to have one monitor for e-sports and completely another (TV) for movies etc.
I have an Alienware AW3423DWF & Asus PG27AQN. Desktop use feels slow on the Alienware due to its 165hz compared to the 360hz Asus. So I'm in the same boat that more Hz, the better.

You're probably not gonna get a low enough response time and input lag for 540hz if they decided to go with ips. I'm still kinda lost on why this isn't an oled tho😭
As technologically impressive as this is... wake me up when we hit 360 or more on an OLED panel. I'd like to see the graphs for that.

Is it possible to start including wattage / power draw, in different modes and in standby. Super high refresh rates, HDR, gsync, ... it all starts to add up...

Excellent review! And yes, TN will have the terrible viewing angles issue. I would also warn about Asus quality control. Some years ago I had one of their 27" TN 144Hz ROG displays. It was great as long as viewing dead on as indicated. Problem was, almost in a perfectly timed manner, couple of months after warranty had expired, some striped horizontal lines appeared on the left of the monitor, and it got a lot worse and unbearable in just a few days. In fact before expiration it had another issue: sometimes the exact left-haft of the screen was a couple of pixels off compared to the exact right half, so you would notice this broken vertical line in the very middle of the monitor. That needed to reboot the entire machine, because just turning on and off the monitor changed nothing about it. Had to replace it. Using an LG 27" 165Hz since then, so far problem free. This is an IPS one, so better colors, and no viewing angle issues. Contrast in fact also slightly better because of the improvements IPS had had over the years.

People are just built different. When theres people saying we are getting diminishing return on the higher refrsh rates, my eyes still get hurt from the blur caused by low refresh speed on 360hz. I need to try this 540hz soon.

Great Review! I really don't understand why big companies like Alienware, Acer, MSI etc. Aren't doing monitors like this with E-TN Panels. Like they are targeting competitive players and Instead they decide to go blurry IPS panels that have worse motion clarity. Like if they didn't know that competitive players actually care about input lag and motion, way more than colors.
That's just it though... I don't think they are targeting competitive FPS gamers with their 240Hz IPS and OLED panels. The reality is, competitive gamers are a tiny market. Most gamers do so casually and are more likely to look for a good balance of performance and color accuracy.

I saw you were rarely getting above 500fps in Fortnite during this review. In this scenario; did you have ULMB2 disabled and Gsync enabled? Frames capped or uncapped?
I would like to have it for Windows. So smooth it would be, just like an crt.

and i hate that i have to pick between resolution and hz, and i have to pick something in between, compromises is not fun.
i want a 4k 540hz and then the game i play decide what can be done, 4k 120hz for slower great looking games, and then 1080p 540hz for when you want motion clarity and low inputlag.
and of course anything in between. and hopefully all games can run 4k 240hz in the near future, and support frame generation to get to 540hz.
i tried frame gen from 130fps to 240fps and input lag was still there.
When 4k 540hz comes out 16k 144hz will be a thing xD which I'd rather have.
@@xpodx 16k is useless lol. I wonder at what point a higher refresh rate makes almost no difference. Going from 360hz to 540hz does make a difference. Going from 4k to 8k... no difference. Hell, going from 1080p to 4k while I saw a big difference...when I actually played the game... I couldn't care less about 4k.

4K is a huge difference and 8K is also another big upgrade though not as big as the jump from 1080p to 4K.
16k however, don’t see it having any merit.
Doesn’t matter though, high fidelity and 60~120 fps in 4K is already hard to get in the latest games and I don’t see anyone playing in 8K for the next 10 years.
Everything above 240hz is a placebo though.

@Lock2002ful company's will always find new ways to advance and improve, and there are older titles that are easy to run. I'm gonna get 8k 144hz next, but for now using my 4k 144hz and 5k 60
2:44 does that mean I can still play at 540hz but that the gsync only kicks in when it is 500hz and below? Edit: Does 11:40 answer my question? That's unfortunate because if I want gsync I miss out on those 40 frames but if I want ulmb2 I need the game to maintain the 540hz for optimal use. I guess that 40 fps gap is small enough that if I can reliably hit 500 fps I should be able to hit 540 fps and if my frame rate frequently dips below the refresh rate than 500hz is probably more than sufficient for the gsync lol.
Awesome detailed video with a lot of geeky explanation but I'm left a bit confused. I just picked up this monitor and a rig with 12900K (3.2) and RTX 4070. Running Fornite at 1080p on performance mode. Hitting frame rates in the 300's but sometimes in the 400's, and upper 400's. I'm running the monitor in overdrive mode but not too sure if I should enable ULMB 2, and if so, what PW. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm really going nuts here trying to sort this all out. Thank you!
there is little difference in clarity between different PW settings. Leave it to 100 if u want the brightest picture. Thats what i do. Optimaly u should set the refresh rate to the min fps ur rig hits ingame when using ULMB2. So in ur case fix it to 360hz (this is lowest possible value when using ULMB2 on this monitor) but u can try higher values and see how it works.

I don't think high refresh rates are novelty. They're legitimately super useful and enhancers your experience, they're just hard to drive in modern hardware outside of a few ultra optimized games

If manufacturers can produce this level of performance at 1440p, I'm going to grab it. As I'm still on Windows 10, AMD VRR being capped at 500 Hz has absolutely no impact on my consideration.
It isnt for esports only. You can run doom eternal at 700fps on a 4090. Lots of high fps sp games can be played on this display too.

@@brett20000000009 I guess the better question is, why would you pick this over an OLED? better pixel response times, similiar latency, significantly better image quality, higher resolution... the point is that you are sacrificing a lot just for that faster speed, and the only reason anyone with eyes would do that is for a competitive advantage.
yea for $900, you are CERTAINLY better off getting the AQN IPS 360hz. which has ULMB2. and of course even better off waiting till Jan 6th and Q1 for the Gen 2 QD-oleds. the AW 1440p 360hz is going to blow this out of the water.

You highlight the monitor missing HDMI 2.1 but only having DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC rather than DisplayPort 2 also seems to be a bit of a misstep. Is that a limitation of the GSync module?

540hz I nowhere near enough for life-like motion portrayal. Solving stroboscopic stepping for example would require extremely high refresh rates like 20KHz.

DP 1.4 was already better than HDMI 2.0. Almost twice the bandwidth.
@@farmeunit Umm.. no. DP 1.4 has 32 Gbps bandwidth (26 Gbps data rate) and HDMI 2 has 48 Gbps. DP 2 has 80 Gbps (77 Gbps data rate).

In this day and age the choise is so clear between 4K 240HZ Oled HDR display & A TN 550Hz + monitor

Well.. It's not for every day use. It has a VERY specific field of use and for that 1080p is actually great.
If I had the space, I'd literally have 2 desk setups (normal 3x1440p, and an Esport setup with smth like this here and nothing else to distract).
Right... as my main I have my 3rd monitor as a task manager and msi afterburner display. As well as a 5k 60hz but my main is a 4k 144hz ips
The rog pg27aqn is amazing at the probably same price. I wont need another upgrade for at least two or three years

At this high refreshrates I think response times and a very good strobing mode are vastly more important.

For high refresh rates you should be more concerned with your CPU.
And even today, something like OW2 can run 600fps off of 5600x at 1080p.
If you live with your parents, you should be able to work a minimum wage job and save your money for a month and have enough money to get a high-end GPU.
I'd like to see you run OW2 at any settings at 1 % lows above 540 or even 480 in every map. Avg fps isn't useful metric - you need the fps the most in situations where it's the lowest (active fights). And 5600x definitely can't do that, even 7800x3d can't pull it off.@@philistine3260

Q24G2 REVIEW PLEASE, We need more 24-25 inch 1440p-4k 144hz+ monitors.
My problem would be- how long will the overclock last? I have a rog pg248Q and the overclock only lasted a year before it simply stopped overclocking. Also when it did overclock it introduced so much ghosting it wasn't worth it.

Most specs sound very good on paper and I will give props to Asus for getting such high refresh rate and 1400 contrast on a TN panel.
However, it's sadly still a 1080p display. It's 2023... I just, can't, sorry.
the market for this monitor are cs2, valorant, and/or overwatch players. 1080p is enough visual sharpness for those games.
@@dive_whale Yes, this would also be my guess. And 1080p is also considerably easier to run than 1440p or 4K resolutions ofc. I understand where the niche/market for this product is, I just don't care for 1080p screens anymore myself. And I also don't play any of those games.

high percentge gamers are playing valorant and cs2. This monitor is the best. 1440p and 4k are for old slow reflex gamers.
Pro gamers never use monitor crosshairs as it diverts the concentration. It's a dead feature out of the box. May be few enthusiasts may use.
As OLEDS are still similarly priced it would like to have more comparison to them, as i still look out for the clarity i had when CRT was a thing
Crt is still a thing rocking one on my PC as a 3rd monitor and got one in the gmaing room
Gsync or adaptive sync does barely anything at 144hz and higher.
Tearing is only an issue at 60hz displays

I was like, you can only get up to $550 bc of refresh rate. For $300 more you can get curved ultrawide oled 1440p 165hz monitor that destroys this mess.
Comparing bananas to Ferraris. Those monitors are for completely different uses. Since this is specifically for the highest performance in fast paced games, that 165 Hz oled would be terrible in comparison.@@fiece4767

@@evaone4286 Tn is awful to look at. Va can be great if you get high end Samsung panel and has better dark blacks. Cheap va is ok but you do get black smear and ghosting but this doesn't bother some people if it's minor
@@evaone4286 I’ve used a TN Panel when the only 1440p 140hz was TN. It is fine. People are overblowing the cons. How many times do you look at your monitor from under your keyboard? I still prefer IPS but TN is more than fine.

I would, I don't care about anything else besides the response time being as fast as possible. And this one is far from other TN's in terms of color reproduction.
Intresting the way monitors are elvoving, from the looks of it 8k might never be a standard ever (or at least not in the forseeable future), especially since ray tracing is so heavy and since we already gonna have 4k 240hz OLED displays, so it just seems that the future of monitors will be mostly 4k with even higher refresh rates.
Hi, I just bought it but I ve an issue. Everything is set to 540hz (monitor and windows) in fact if I stay on windows it shows 540 but as soon as I enter games it goes 360 and on Adrenalin it gives me pixel clock error . Im using the rx 6900xt. Can’t find a solution.. can u help me?
If desktop use is so much smoother and responsive, why is 60hz still the default monitor? Seems to me its time to retire 60hz even for productivity and casual use...
Yea even Dell now has office monitors with 120Hz and IPS Black that should get them closer to VA contrast. 60Hz or below could have some uses for E-Ink, longer battery life or similar situations but largely 120Hz is so cheap there is no point to saving literal cents by going with 60Hz.
540 Hz sounds really cool unitl you remember that there's only a dozen or so games that can render more than 500 fps... A bunch of single player games have engine limitations well below even 300 fps, so buying this monitor for single player games is pointless.
And on the other hand, unless you're a top tier pro in Counter-Strike, Valorant, Rainbow Six: Siege or Overwatch - you're just wasting your money.
The majority of your time using the monitor will typically be at 540fps. Because that's what the desktop will run at.
And I also want to push back on the "top tier pro" argument. It's unfortunate that high refresh rate is so much marketed as an esport feature when in reality it gives a much more significant improvement to comfort and immersion than it does to gaming performance.

And your assumption about mouse speed is incorrect. Even a slow 1000 pixels/second cursor movement would defeat 540Hz already as you would see a trail of stroboscopic steps lagging behind your cursor, each separated by about 2 pixels-wide gaps.

Thank Nvidia and their old G-Sync module that adds +200 to the price and comes with a fan and higher noise/power. Also old ports. Selling 900+ monitor in 2023 with DP 1.4 and HDMI 2.0. Those standards were introduced in 2018 and 2016 respectively btw.

Does this monitor still give the smoothest motion on the market? I just bought it, but now I'm wondering if the Alienware AW2725DF might give even better smoothness (despite lower refresh rate) with its faster pixel response time (faster pixels, less ghosting?). Also the Oled wouldn't come with all the drawbacks of TN.
KEEP this monitor it is future proof , its also brighter than OLED monitors with a faster refresh. OLED may seem cool , but thats only early on .. The more hours you clock on an oled the worse it becomes... research OLED degradation. Gaming for long hours on an oled increase so many complications it honestly isnt worth it imo.
External reticles aren't allowed, be it putting a Sharpie dot on the screen or enabling a hardware crosshair like some monitors have. This isn't really enforcable in online play and would be obvious to tournament admins on LAN where things truly count.

I had the monitor two days and took it back. It’s truly amazing, at least the motion clarity. My gripes were the colors, 1080p, and price.
Say this was $600. Idve kept it. It’s actually a cheat code in terms of what you can do to people in online lobbies. But that’s pretty much all it can do, FPS game. If it were OLED, at least then the colors allow you to use it as a full on gaming monitor. But yea. This is simply an FPS Gaming monitor, and unless you’re the person to have a separate car for driving, then sport driving, you don’t need this monitor.
