Is this some sort of midlife crisis or what am I dealing with here? What if he league starts with a melee build?? I dunno what to do
thing is that not even how it works. with a decent investment, melee builds can easily win on single target and can even get close in clear. + youre insanely tanky with access to endurance charges. melee is superior in just about everything now tbh.
Melee absolutely deserves thses better defensive options because being ranged itself is a very good defensive layer to have, which melee obviously doesnt have.
For anyone confused about the "lucky" math: (chance of event) + (chance of event NOT happening) = 100%. In this case, it's easiest to solve for the chance to NOT block, then take 1 minus that number to get the chance to block. So you take block chance, say 70%, the chance to NOT block is 30%. The chance to NOT block with 2 attempts due to "lucky" is 0.3 * 0.3 = 0.09 = 9%. If your chance to NOT block is 9%, your chance to block is 100% minus that, so 91%
by sheer curiosity I checked how "Dual wielding" block is instead of shield-based : You reach the same values with only 14 points, by dropping the testudo cluster and taking the FIRST node of the "Blade Barrier/Ambidexterity" Gladiators eating GOOD
I dont see a problem here... ranged builds, casters etc, they avoid majority of hits by killing stuff offscreen or having minions taking the hits... Melee has to go up close and personal taking every single hit in the face... To me the biggest problem as melee has been the fact that in general you just cant afford taking too many hits before you simply fall over (unless you use the stupid defiance of destiny)..
That not true tho. I have made plenty of tanky and strong melee builds even with the state melee has been in. Just look at Dual Strike of Ambidexterity builds and how they can shit on the entire game. Besides the awful playstyle with totems, the issue was much more about being very limited to only some ascendancies, some few melee skills that were worth playing and often a much higher investement compared to other archetypes to reach the same effectiveness. Also, if you truly think having 95% blockchance if no problem you truly don't care about the state of the game. This is the same kind of shitty mindset that brought us where we where all those years, just with different archetypes.

I think the Determined Survivor node is bugged in POB. It says it doubles the inherit bonus of dual wielding. But if I DW, I go from 23% block to 93% block with Determined Survivor. So it's adding the 50% as if I'm holding a shield and then adding another another 20% from DW. It should be 43% instead of 93%. So you still need another 40% block to cap both attack and spell at 65%
Since Ghazzy mentioned Evasion, I'd like to remind everyone that Evasion is INCREDIBLE with Block. While Evasion works on an Entropy system as he mentioned, it also averages out to avoiding as many hits as your evade chance on PoB will tell you. So if you get a 75% chance to evade attacks of map monsters with normal accuracy, then that means you will be guaranteed to be hit 25% of the time due to the entropy system, but 75% will be evades. The only real difference to block is that with block you can technically RNG your way into never getting hit at all. But the big thing to remember here is that if you evade an attack, everything is good, and when the evade fails to defend you, what happens then? ..you roll for block chance. So if you evade 75% of attacks, you're taking only 25% of the hits. Now you have a 95% block chance against that 25%, which puts you at a 1.25% chance to get hit. This won't work on pinnacle bosses, which means you only really care about this interaction for map monsters. And the great thing is, you REALLY don't need much Evasion to make a massive impact against map monsters. Just a Jade flask and a Grace (3.24 one) with exactly 155dex for the 20/0 Grace requirement puts you at 55% chance to evade normal T16 monsters. It might be somewhat unnecessary with Gladiator's lucky block, but consider this for all block characters, especially Necro. At 55% chance to evade attacks at the normal 75% block cap, that means that instead of 25% of attacks you take 11.25% of attacks in maps.
I thought the caps are all 75%? No matter if you have 100% block, it's still hard capped at 75%? There a change I hadn't heard of? I've been gone about 3 years.
@@theelder4797 It is, but one of Gladiator's new nodes, More than Skill, makes your block chance lucky after you block an attack, rolling the chance twice and taking the best result. The 95% chance to block is from factoring in this reroll along with taking items or passives to increase your block cap for attacks to 78%.
The anti-synergy here is that your Blocks are only lucky if you've blocked in the past 4 seconds. With really high evasion values, you may go 4+ seconds without an attack coming through, unless you're just sitting in a pack of dozens of mobs
I think about going Gladiator with Bleed Spectral Shield Throw - not really melee, but as you have not to care about block chance on your shield, because it is overridden by the ascendency node, you would be able to fully focus on getting your defenses on the shield as high as possible. Should be good as the Spectral Shield Throw skill, bleed and and defenses on shields are buffed in 3.25 (because quality is multiplicative now).
To my experience, the "random" block chance tends to have periods when you will not block at all and let all hits pass. This was always my biggest issue with going full block. You barely take any damage until you suddenly get hit by 30 hits at once because your block suddenly doesn't roll for every attack separately. And being a block build you are most likely not prepared for that. And knowing GGG they will increase spawn rate for mod "hits cannot be blocked" just to spite us.
You could also do the first version without Versatile Combatant and equip an impossible escape jewel that points to Runebinder and take all those spell block passives like that. Together with the items from the second version, tempest shield and the three nodes + block mastery bottom right you will also get to 78/78 block with just 22 passive points and those items.

I think its 93.75% not 95%. If you have .75 chance to block and you roll twice then there are 4 combinations of possibilities. First being two combinations of block and not block: 2 x (0.75*0.25) plus one combination of two blocks and two not blocks, the two not blocks would be a fail so we won't include that because we are trying to find the combination of success. So we would add the probability of two blocks on the rolls to the previous calculation: 2 x (0.75*0.25) + (0.75*0.75) = 0.9375 or 93.75%
I can finally make the pure avoidance build I wanted to do for awhile with block+spell dodge+evasion. It use to take so much investment, especially getting spell dodge in SSF, but now it's a lot more of an idea
Even if you go Duel Wield and get 40% Block immidiate and than go from 10% More Attack Speed to 20% More Attack Speed (9.09% More DPS) it's still easy to get Block cap with Versatile Combatant
there is a new shield that gives -10 max block and spell block in exchange for lucky block. It seems like a good option for inquisitor or witch, since they start near block and spell block nodes
The only concern, i think, there is for melee and to scale damage is the harder to come by higher attack speeds. Hars to say without actually playing. But man am i excited af.
I am pretty noob when it come's to PoE, but i've always played ranged builds. I look forward to trying a melee build! Hopefully there will be some nice guides I can use.
What is wild to me is that we almost got lucky block for attacks on gladiator back in Scourge but they changed their mind in between the defence manifesto and the patchnotes. And now they go and let us have lucky spell block too. lol
Self damage can be blocked, so we don't need to rely on enemies to do the job, with other benefits like block recovery, retaliation skills, CWDT spell cast loop...etc.
Gladiator will likely be my 3rd build. I plan on doing the Skeleton Archer poison build for bossing and also having a skeleton archer volley/phantasm setup for farming. Expecting minion gear to be cheaper this league, the fear is nobody even crafts any of it and I greatly dislike crafting!
The new shield they showed in the reveal gives lucky block without the need to have blocked decently With the -10 max block & spell block, gives any char permanent 87% block. Perfect for a guardian.
Glad can do basically the same wihile dual wielding with only a little extra points since the node before doubles your DW bonues AKA gives you 40% block. Then you just go into the DW wheel closeby and bobs your uncle. Its not even really that much of an additional investment cause when you are dual wielding you probably want that wheel anyway for damage.
Whoa, just realized I've never completed the campaign with duelist. Guess I'm going gladiator next league, this seems silly enough for some good fun :)
Maybe I'm missing something but testudo seems like a bait compaired to going dual wielding and taking blade barrier, same capped+lucky block but you also get 20% more attack speed for basically the same investment. Sure you'll lose some survivability in the endgame, but for day 1 dualwielding seems straight up better for pushing through maps with this.
Ghazzy, melee needs this. All it takes is a random DoT, and bye. Melee is up and personal with mobs and bosses as well. It needs these defenses. It's not ranged.
its pretty good but you still have to invest in it via points or currency. and tho you cant block degens or some groundeffects while with max resistances + flat % dmg reduction will help against pretty much all dmg out there. so yes up to you how you wanna build defensive layers but i think its nothing broken here that outshines everything else out there
What we are glossing over here pretty heavily is that with lucky you can still miss the roll multiple times in a row. So you can still die. And it will happen. Taking an average doesn't matter when in reality you can still hit multiple bad rolls. The more you open up the sample size (aka time you play the build) the more it will happen. So you will feel super strong 99% of the time but sometimes you just POP. So don't go making this your only defense in ssf. Also, have others have mentioned, degens will be a nightmare.
This could be an experiment for the new counterattack skills in the league. I can foresee gladiators becoming overpowered and popular. After that, they will surely be nerfed.
I am not sure block mastery works in PoB how I would imagine it to work. Right now with Determined Survivour Glad node it gives +10% additional block chance, which I doubt it true. Ascendancy node overrides what goes into charachter sheet and make shield to contribute 50% block to it, but it does not override the value on the item itself, and reading the mastery I believe it picks up value from the item. We have to test it of course but I think it's inflated in PoB right now P.S. Also worth mentioning you need both ascendancy points you took since small nodes give 3% attack block
95% block conditionally. So if you don’t block the first hit you may be almost on low life when the second hit comes. So it will feel spiky like evasion and you will get unlucky rips
You dont need a calculator to see what your effective block will be just goto custom mods on a new charcter in PoB put in +#% chance to Suppress Spell Damage Where # = your block chance and Chance to Suppress Spell Damage is Lucky If you dont have and supress except the value you just added it will tell you your block chance as supression chance
Ngl i consider more going versatile combatant than 78 block on glad this league With just 2 wheels of 3 points of block and mastery you get to 70/65 lucky block/spellblock even with a white shield with no mods Considering the investment its crazy strong and you keep a lot of points for offense. Which you will need for damage because if you already use a shield gokng full lucky block max block without versatile might make you zdps
I was trying to build a dual wielder and went for Determined Survivor - instantly my block chance skyrocketed so much that I'm thinking this is unintentional if not bugged, mainly because the "20% increased Attack Block" is supposed to be the "inherent" portion to be doubled, but it was doubling my entire block chance instead.
"Dual Wielding now inherently grants +20% chance to Block Attack Damage and 10% more Attack Speed (previously +15%)." You might also just run this and only lose 10% if you dont use a shield, but you gain 20% attackspeed in trade off for the offensive side
Maybe, glad has a node that has a chance to keep the skill usable after use. There is at least one other similar node in the tree. There is also a node that has a chance to make another retaliate skill usable when you use a retaliate skill. There is reduction for the skills in the tree. So I think it could work, but how far it will get you?
I will personally skip Testudo and go Deflection , As the mountain and Agressive bastion since it scales bleed, pick both max block masteries and get 70% and 67% base block chance.
and here i thought it meant 50% out OF the shields base block chance so it would be half since it was my belief that it would have favored dualwield more by giving shield wearing a downside
@@spectrecular9721 Think of it this way, if you got a 50% chance of doing something, and you try twice there is 4 outcomes, 0, 1, 1 and 2 successes, 0 and 2 means both either failed or succeeded, but there is two ways to get only the one outcome, so each has a 25% chance of happening, just like .5 x .5 = .25 which backs up the math.
@@TreesPlease42 Statistically, yes. But programmatically, it's just a PRNG generating two numbers between 0 and 1 to see if either of them go over 0.22 in this case. I don't see where the "power of 2" multiplication comes in. That's the part I'm trying to understand, here
I made a build that is 80/80 block but requires level 86 and takes about 20 points to get the additional +15 spell block. I don't know if 20 points is worth 15 spell block versus going Versatile Combatant and saving the points.
You have to block constantly for it to work, so almost unusable on some bosses and in some cases. It should'we just been "Your block chance is lucky" without any reqierments.

Im 99% sure this is bugged !!!! right now you are double dipping "determined Survivor" you get 20% extra block from dual wieldung AND 50% block from your shield, im pretty sure that is just a wrong implementation in POB
hi ghazzy. Don't you think in order to "more than a skill" node to work, first we have to block sth? So we can't calculate as a default number increase
What happened to the "stop nerfing the top, and bring the bottom up" mentality? Im glad they are making these changes, melee wont feel so shit (compared to ranged)
Melee need these defenses, might try actually a melee skill this league. I been rushing t16 with ranged, not even maxed resists and around 3k health. Just don't get hit is actually a really good defense and not a meme.
Can you complete this build guide? I want to make this but after taking the nodes you reccomend i dont know what to do after that. Im a new player and love the idea of max block but you stop the build after taking the nodes. I want to make this with shield crush. 🛡
How do you get block capped with NO INVESTEMNT? as i see it you need to invest a lot into blockchance to get block capped. even with those 22 points, i only count 88 block which would be 65 attack block and 23*2=46 spellblock. how do you get 65 65? even with the mastery that gives 1% spell block for each 5% block, that would only be 13% spellblock leaving you at 59%, not 65
It's definately good for mapping but don't get fooled into thinking this will work for ubers. Degens and unblockable mechanics hard counter half your ascendcy

The explanation of the calculation was worth you posting, even if you missed he had +3 to max. 😀
Which shield is it? Tell me 😊
@@lioneddy the shield is on the poe settlers of kalguur league reveal page
@@lioneddySvallinn, from the new league
Wish we could block trauma damage 🫠
@@Eas_the_Planeswalker It would be the most op thing in poe lol
how do you generate self damage then
@@GocmenAbi Many ways actually. Eye of innocence, scold's bridle, ward loop...etc.
If the self-damage is secondary damage (ie. not from spells, attacks, or DoT) then it can not be blocked.
Gladiator is the new Jugg for lower investment tankiness, probably better, since block chance is a base stat on shields not an affix.
Bleed SST Glad... the more we theorycraft, the more I love it^^
🔥
joooo moxsy! :3 i enjoyed your tfd content, will you play and do some poe content this league too?
Gladiator will likely be my 3rd build.
I plan on doing the Skeleton Archer poison build for bossing and also having a skeleton archer volley/phantasm setup for farming.
Expecting minion gear to be cheaper this league, the fear is nobody even crafts any of it and I greatly dislike crafting!
OK I'm sold. I'm gonna make a glad.
Just gotta figure out regen/leech to fill in the gaps. The problem is getting enough damage to feel good after investing into defences.
Bro which PoB are you using, I have the same version but it doesn't have the 3.25 updates...
Click options at the bottom left, check opt into beta builds. Then check for update.
@@DeedlyDood thank you kind sir
Ghazzy will make a minion/melee starter this league XD
Maybe I'm missing something but testudo seems like a bait compaired to going dual wielding and taking blade barrier, same capped+lucky block but you also get 20% more attack speed for basically the same investment. Sure you'll lose some survivability in the endgame, but for day 1 dualwielding seems straight up better for pushing through maps with this.
Gotta roll in mobs on this build with word:
"Can i clean here?"
Dot: allow me to introduce myself
Ghazzy, melee needs this. All it takes is a random DoT, and bye. Melee is up and personal with mobs and bosses as well. It needs these defenses. It's not ranged.
its pretty good but you still have to invest in it via points or currency. and tho you cant block degens or some groundeffects while with max resistances + flat % dmg reduction will help against pretty much all dmg out there. so yes up to you how you wanna build defensive layers but i think its nothing broken here that outshines everything else out there
Given the bleed masteries giving you Aggravated bleedings id say you could potentially deal more damage by going War of Attrition (for bossing)
I’m on the fence because you can get free aggregate with exerted attacks, just warcry. But consistency is good for mindless gameplay.
Also, have others have mentioned, degens will be a nightmare.
mathematics and Path of Exile go hand in hand.
This could be an experiment for the new counterattack skills in the league. I can foresee gladiators becoming overpowered and popular. After that, they will surely be nerfed.
would this be viable on a spin2win cyclone homemade build? or would you recommend a different specialization?
I am not sure block mastery works in PoB how I would imagine it to work. Right now with Determined Survivour Glad node it gives +10% additional block chance, which I doubt it true. Ascendancy node overrides what goes into charachter sheet and make shield to contribute 50% block to it, but it does not override the value on the item itself, and reading the mastery I believe it picks up value from the item. We have to test it of course but I think it's inflated in PoB right now
P.S. Also worth mentioning you need both ascendancy points you took since small nodes give 3% attack block
95% block conditionally. So if you don’t block the first hit you may be almost on low life when the second hit comes. So it will feel spiky like evasion and you will get unlucky rips
You dont need a calculator to see what your effective block will be just goto custom mods on a new charcter in PoB put in +#% chance to Suppress Spell Damage
Where # = your block chance and
Chance to Suppress Spell Damage is Lucky
If you dont have and supress except the value you just added it will tell you your block chance as supression chance
Ngl i consider more going versatile combatant than 78 block on glad this league
With just 2 wheels of 3 points of block and mastery you get to 70/65 lucky block/spellblock even with a white shield with no mods
Considering the investment its crazy strong and you keep a lot of points for offense. Which you will need for damage because if you already use a shield gokng full lucky block max block without versatile might make you zdps
Svallin (new Unique) gives 100% lucky uptime for cost of -10 max chance
I was trying to build a dual wielder and went for Determined Survivor - instantly my block chance skyrocketed so much that I'm thinking this is unintentional if not bugged, mainly because the "20% increased Attack Block" is supposed to be the "inherent" portion to be doubled, but it was doubling my entire block chance instead.
"Dual Wielding now inherently grants +20% chance to Block Attack Damage and 10% more Attack Speed (previously +15%)."
You might also just run this and only lose 10% if you dont use a shield, but you gain 20% attackspeed in trade off for the offensive side
Having this much block chance with only minimal investment should give us enough room for dot mitigation and damage
how do new retaliate skills work, are they worth building around?
I'm interested with this well. I'll definitely try even if it's a bad build 😂😂😂
It'll be hard to activate them enough and they have high cooldowns. Good supplemental skills
@@noobtastic-really how far doesn't matter much to me, the fun part for me is the experimentation. 😆
2:56 - Where does *0.22 × 0.22* come from? I understand that 0.22 is 22 percent, but why multiply itself?
with "lucky" chances rolling twice
@@kaptohka_2050 How is that multiplicative? Shouldn't it literally just be two separate calculations, keeping whichever rolls higher?
Given that you check both rolls, only one roll needs to succeed. This increases the odds substantially of getting a block
That's the part I'm trying to understand, here
EQ bleed glad starter with axe+shield sounds better than ever
really interested in this retaliation block build stuff
I think retaliation skills on block would be good in that setup
I made a build that is 80/80 block but requires level 86 and takes about 20 points to get the additional +15 spell block. I don't know if 20 points is worth 15 spell block versus going Versatile Combatant and saving the points.
Cant wait for self played melee minions
I imagine determine survivor might lock out other block modifiers keeping it always 50%
Guess we pulling up on melee this league guys.
You need to invest in block recovery more to achieve that block - immortality :)
They should make it like heart stopper. chance to block is lucky for 4 seconds every 8 seconds or w.e. the wording is.
You have to block constantly for it to work, so almost unusable on some bosses and in some cases. It should'we just been "Your block chance is lucky" without any reqierments.
i think they will fix blocking after this. probably put a cool down on how often you can block.
Staffs are insane, you get block and the damage of a 2-hander.
Get the full max block and use that jewel that makes damage reserves life instead of taking damage lol, will totally get 2 sec in battle to recover lol.😅 + The crazy extra max life.
Gladiator is so cool now defense wise. But not a lot of dmg scaling on the ascendancy.
you just go bleed so is still mid
Gladiator is going to be the next raider, the new Gladiator is overly hyped
Im 99% sure this is bugged !!!!
right now you are double dipping "determined Survivor" you get 20% extra block from dual wieldung AND 50% block from your shield, im pretty sure that is just a wrong implementation in POB
only if you dual wield. It will show the correct 50% block if you have a shield
Pick two nodes from tree and you get 20% easily
@@DoktorNutella Nope. Shield is always 50% so shield doesn't matter
Its only bugged for dual wielding or no shield equipped. it gives the correct base block if you only select the passive with any shield.
hi ghazzy. Don't you think in order to "more than a skill" node to work, first we have to block sth? So we can't calculate as a default number increase
What happened to the "stop nerfing the top, and bring the bottom up" mentality? Im glad they are making these changes, melee wont feel so shit (compared to ranged)
PSA: don't forget the stat "stun and block recovery" so that you get to play the game instead of constant block animation. :)
stun immunity
Melee need these defenses, might try actually a melee skill this league. I been rushing t16 with ranged, not even maxed resists and around 3k health. Just don't get hit is actually a really good defense and not a meme.
With daressos courage you block one hit then have 100% spell block without investing into any spell block.
Can you complete this build guide? I want to make this but after taking the nodes you reccomend i dont know what to do after that. Im a new player and love the idea of max block but you stop the build after taking the nodes. I want to make this with shield crush. 🛡
Could you do a build video with a Scion Gladiator/Jugg ascendency?
how do people already have the 3.25 path of building?
Click options at the bottom left, check opt into beta builds. Then check for update.
@@DeedlyDood Tyvm, also had this question. Very nice info.
What about Necromancer with block offering skill plus the shield Slvavinn (this shield also says your blocks are lucky)??
I'm waiting for so long to get a good block character. One of my first characters ever was a blocking char with cwdt and tempest shield.
How do you get block capped with NO INVESTEMNT? as i see it you need to invest a lot into blockchance to get block capped.
even with those 22 points, i only count 88 block which would be 65 attack block and 23*2=46 spellblock. how do you get 65 65? even with the mastery that gives 1% spell block for each 5% block, that would only be 13% spellblock leaving you at 59%, not 65
"Little investment"
Proceed to spend 22 passives points and 2 ascendancy points.......
ok buddy
It's definately good for mapping but don't get fooled into thinking this will work for ubers. Degens and unblockable mechanics hard counter half your ascendcy
I think they are cool with it because youd have to take a shield on glad right? I think people usually play dual wield
Someone forgot about projectile block😂 1 projectile will lay you flat. Need some projectile block. I remember this from max block build
Now hear me out - max block acrobati-
