It's been awhile since I tuned in for one of these and dang, Trent! You're cutting quite the handsome figure these days! Whatever you're doing, keep up the good work!
Was just looking at thumbnails to get a time lapse of his face width. I just worry about the rebound. If you read this Trent don't forget to take breaks where you just maintain your weight for a little.
Reminds me of the original design of the French horn, the natural horn. It could only play the natural harmonics, but you can change keys by changing the crooks and “transposing” the harmonics. Something like that but for the trumpet family would be interesting
I always learn something from your videos, Trent. Today I learned “ad hoc” means “out of tune.” Latin is no longer taught so much here in the United States of Americaland, so it’s good to pick up that phrase and I can’t wait to sprinkle it about in conversation with my friends down at the center of our culture, the 7-11 parking lot.
@@xaitatYeah, I was trying to signal sarcasm through context, like the 7-11 line, but it’s tough in comments. Seriously, for all you know I do think of a Blueberry Slushie as haute cuisine.
Great job Trent! This was a difficult project but you pulled it off well. My high school band had one of the original Frank Holton Superbones in the instrument closet. It wasn’t in great condition but it was fun to play. It’s surprisingly ergonomic since they designed the valves to sit shorter and be easier to reach. We used it as a bass trombone replacement. Personally I loved it for jazz playing, if I had the money for one I’d try and get one of the Schagerl rotary models.
@@VVarlock_ Come to think of it, you can half> valve notes on the valve side, too. That gives us an infinity of wrong notes on both sides of the horn. My head hurts!
You should record a short piece written for instruments in various keys, Bb trumpet, F Horn, C trombone… but every part is played on this bone with slide transposition. No pesky rewriting or mentally transposing. Set the slide, play what’s written.
We really DO need to return to the days of composing songs for unorthodox instruments and instruments in rare/unusual keys. Guitar and bass seem to be the only ones using funny tunings and weird bells and whistles (string specific "benders" for example, or specific string count). The classics (and their composers) became such because of the perpetual experimentation and pushing the instruments and their players to the limits. Players of classical instruments need to reclaim that crown from the worlds of Rock-'n'-roll and Metal.
Well done! Your deadpan voice sarcasm is so good sometimes I cannot tell which of you remarks are serious and which are not... Nonetheless good job on the instrument.
Hey Trent, haven’t seen one of your videos in awhile. Just wanted to let you know how much you impacted my inspiration when I first started out playing trombone. Also, you look amazing, I hope you enjoy the holiday season.
They used to call me the superbone back in college but not because I was a band geek (But seriously tho, this is such an incredible project! Amazing work, now make a supersousaphone 🤪)
Trent, you have amazing abilities how to totally bodge up successfully made instruments. I love your superb sarcasm!!! Keep it Sir. We need to see you on a daily basis with something new, if you can facilitate that!..... Kind regards from England. Den Finch.
Pretty dang spiffy. It would be neat to see some attempts to clean up the cosmetic issues. This type of DIY brass instrument repair is pretty tricky and often yield results that make the overall appearance of an instrument go down rather than up despite the intent. So this is the perfect test bed for experimenting with such techniques since it might actually be impossible to make this ugboniphone look worse at this point. It has been really cool to see you branch out into taking apart and resoldering brass instruments, and more of this would be great on some of your other project horns. But cosmetic repairs, refinishing/laquer would be fun to watch too.
Hey Trent great video but I was watching some of your old videos and I just wanted to say how much better you look and well but also the confidence you’ve gained over the last 5 years or so, thanks for the vids
Make a trombone with a multi-wrapped slide? I once made a double wrap tenor, and it brought the fundamental down to D quarter flat. Using calculus, I estimate a third slide length would bring it down to Ab0 (so its pedal notes would begin right below the range of the piano.) Ab contrabass trombone. Then a fourth slide length would lower it to the E quarter flat below. You'd just have to figure out how to hold four adjacent slides and attach a sufficient counterweight for your E quarter flat subcontrabass trombone.
DUDE YOUVE LOST SOME BLOODY WEIGHT!! GOOD FOR YOU! that is so awesome. i see it, i recognize it, and i 👏 for you. your efforts have not gone unnoticed!
Shagurl in Eastern Europe make a super bone using rotary valves that is quite spectacular. You can view its demonstration here on you tube. The valves are located near the front brace bt your left ear. James Morrison demos the instrument for all to hear.
To make it more comfortable to hold you could add a second valve tuning slide that runs flush against the valve block, you can find them on some valve trombones and the look good and will solve that problem of awkwardness
OMG! After demonstrating every rare and weird brass instrument ever made, you are now developing your very own weird and wonderful creations to elevate the glory of lip-wind instruments to musical heights hitherto unimagined. Priceless.
As a non trombonist the standard reply as to what you should do to improve the tone would be to launch it down a very deep pit followed by a few tonne of ballast! Other than that it seems quite a successful amalgamation of brass parts!😂
5:35 It is impossible to change the primary key with a slide. When the key is lowered by a semitone, the length of the tube required to lower the key by another semitone increases. The 1-2pos length and the 2-3pos interval are longer in the latter. It makes more sense to change the key with the valve and adjust the difference in spacing with the slide. Same for 7pos (2pos) fine adjustment when using the F valve. (Sorry. I use Google traansrator.)
Might it be possible to flip the second valve back around and tuck its slide in between the valve block and the bell section? That would take the big lump out from under your palm, which I think would go a long way toward making the instrument not feel like a prototype. It would be worth it, because it sounds fine and that's always the most important part to solve.
This fenagled instrument is really quite interesting! It needs an interesting moniker....bass trombovalvophone....there you go....just like Santa....on the house!! Have fun!
I just subscribed after watching this video. It's been a while since I watched one of your videos and I didn't recognize you. Great job on the weight loss. It will be av great benefit as you get older. Trust me.
I was laughing so much I had to rewind a couple of times to hear what you said next. Have you considered doing stand up comedy? I'm sure you'd be great at it with that deadpan sarcastic delivery.
Great work. But a "superbone" with only one bell? There's room for improvement there. Why settle for one bell when you can follow Adolphe Sax's fine example and make a trombone with not one, not two, but seven bells? Surely that will be true perfection.
Are you selling this? I need it for research purposes. I wanted to write a paper for my Trombone History class on Contemporary Trombone makings in the works. I think this is a prime exmaple of innovative design in the Trombone world. You are a leading inventor for us all keep up the great work.
Never have I wanted to play brass more. Can you play a tune with the trumpet bit while slowly detuning with the trombone like your batteries are falling 😃
So I’ve been wondering about the possibility of making a soprano superbone. As far as I know, no one has made one. I’m thinking that a pocket trumpet may be the right thing to add to the slide section of a soprano trombone…what do you think?
Possible? Yes, if it is placed at the go around bit at the end of the slide. This as the slide consists of a tube sliding over an inner tube, which wouldn't be working if it is interrupted by a valve section. What would be possible is having the valve section placed a little more in the direction of the slides and have that end earlier on the way to the bell. I think that's how other superbones work
Could you please do a video reviewing and giving the backstory of loud mouthpieces(actual company name) they are really unique mouthpieces which play like no other
I'm not a brass player, but this is a pretty neat project, and it seems to be serviceable.. albeit a tad outtatune. As an aside, I'd be super interested to see you muck about with a renaissance cornetto/cornett or a mute cornetto. I'm thinking: 7 valve positions x 7 slide positions = 49 possible ways to play a wrong note. Fun!

have a plunger on a flap spring connected to the bell. rig up a trigger to you thumb so you can wah wah and superbone at the same time.
