Despite how much I enjoyed putting together my first Avelo Airlines review, it was hard for me not to think about their chances of survival over the next 24 months.
I’m mostly feeling positive and hopeful that they’ll grow into being a very competitive ultra low cost airline here in the US. However, they’ve got a long and difficult road in front of them, and it’s not going to be easy to compete in an already highly-competitive space.
This is footage from Avelo Airlines flight number 128, with service from Las Vegas to Santa Rosa California. The aircraft was a 737-800 (N803XT), and I had seat 6F for this 1 hour and 16 minute flight.

Avelo's found a sweet spot in New Haven. Initially four routes to Florida, quickly grew to six with West Palm Beach and Sarasota. The New Haven to Orlando, Fort Myers, Tampa, West Palm Beach, and Fort Lauderdale routes all quickly gained additional frequencies outside of the peak holiday season. They're expecting to announce a non-Florida destination out of New Haven soon, which will be exciting to see.
I was actually trying to figure out how to fly them out of New Haven for this trip, but Las Vegas was a much easier option. 😄
@@sanspotter For sure. After American pulled out of New Haven, connections are a lot tougher.
The New Haven route network is great for those there. I am surprised that they haven’t added Las Vegas to the Burbank hub.
@@davidlazarus67 They're probably afraid of competition. Southwest would hand them their ass on the LAS-BUR route
@@sanspotter please come to New Haven
Just came to my hometown New Haven recently, really hope they succeed. Europe has a ton of ultra low cost carriers, the US definitely needs more!
There's Spirit, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, Allegiant, and Breeze
@@katesmith8897 Southwest and JetBlue are not ULCCs. They are just low cost carriers. And Spirit and Frontier will be merging.
Avelo's killin it in New Haven! They just announced 3 more planes to be based here starting in May .. and new nonstops from HVN to Myrtle Beach, Charleston (SC), Savannah/Hilton Head and Nashville .. as well as increaded frequencies to the existing 6 Florida destinations. Amazing to see. I did a RT to MCO last month on them and was very pleased .. i have 2 more booked. So happy to see out new hometown airline doing so well here. I wish them huge success!
I really hope Avelo stays with us for a long time, it's a good concept that I really want to try for myself! Also all the crews seem very happy and upbeat and everyone who works there always seems very kind, so I think it's gonna be a good ride for Avelo!
Hopefully you can give them a try soon 👍🏻👍🏻
Do you know anything about the Kalamazoo route to Orlando? I imagine a lot of Michiganders go down there for a bit of a break from the heat.
It's nice to see this video's title aging well.. :-) Avelo is doing great and just keeps expanding.
Let’s hope for Avelo’s success! 🤞🏻
Absolutely!
I feel like Alaska will buy the airline once it becomes the biggest in the US
Like they did that with Virgin America probably cuz it was a very big airline
Got to fly avelo on the inaugural from Burbank to Santa Rosa. I loved it. And as a taller guy (6’2”) I found the standard legroom seats to be more than adequate
Burbank to Eugene is running at 80-100 percent, they are even testing out 6 day a week service a couple weeks next month. They just took delivery of a “new to them” 737-800. They are growing
This is my town Santa Rosa. Thanks for coming. Hope you enjoyed it.
I did the Fort Myers to New Haven inaugural on Avelo and they also didn’t have the gate posted on the departure board or the app. They only told us at the counter, but it also helped if we forgot because there were balloons everywhere at the gate
Lol, balloons definitely would helped here! I wonder what the deal is with Avelo and posted gate information? I didn’t use the check in counter, so I was totally clueless right up until departure time.
I got to fly Avelo from RSW to HVN back in January and it was very nice. Nothing amazing, but doesn't need to be. They really have a great thing going in New Haven. I remember their inaugural flight with a few per week. When I landed, there were 2 other 737s parked. It's crazy to see how many places you can fly to out of HVN now...
In an era of airline merger after merger, it’s great to see newcomers like Breeze and Avelo come along and change things. I hope these airlines succeed long term.
I’m not gonna lie, I never thought anyone would fly to Santa Rosa for any reason but the past year has proven me wrong. I work at this airport basically everyday and would’ve never expected the amount of people who come through here. I know the airport and it’s “tent” may seem small but construction is under way for the new terminal and should be up next summer. The future of this airport is very bright! Thanks for stopping buy!
You’re very welcome! I actually really liked STS, and Santa Rosa in general. I never would have visited if it wasn’t for Avelo Airlines, but now that I’ve seen the place, I’m very much looking forward to going back someday!
Spent a day in Santa Rosa in 2009 to check out the Charles Schulz/Peanuts stuff and Coddingtown Mall. Seems like a nice place and if I’m back in the Bay Area SR is on the list to visit again!
Avelo finally recently turned a profit.
I fly them at least once a month between Burbank and Eureka/Arcata, and they have been stellar. And they are usually at least 80% full. So maybe the Las Vegas routes aren't as crowded, but I'm not sure that is true for their broader schedule. They are serving previously underserved markets with great fares (I pay $160 round trip versus $800 on the only other competitor) and people (at least where I'm from) are loving it.
I flew Avelo from STS - BUR and loved it, but being based on the SF Peninsula getting to Santa Rosa isn't that convenient. Would be my go-to if they had cheap flights out of SFO, OAK, or SJC. Really hope they succeed.
But the best thing about them is not having to go to SFO, OAK or SJC. Haha.
Great review, Scott! $59 and even a snack! What a bonus! Hope Avelo succeeds.
Thanks Anita! Best $59 snack I’ve ever had. 😆
Fun fact: à velo in French means “by bike”
Lol
Personally, I think it depends on the market. I live near ACV and I will tell you what, those flights with Avelo are a whole different story. They are booked to near full capacity. When they launched ACV to LAS those flights have been filled with 189 people due to their twice weekly service. Ultimately, certain routes you can tell aren't as strong. Just look at where they added additional flights and destinations. New Haven looks to be a HUGE winner because they keep adding additional flights to different markets. I think with Burbank they are maxed on where they can fly until they can acquire more planes to service said market. This is where I think by adding Vegas to the map, it can allow them to fly more routes with out hampering their operations in Burbank. As it is Burbank is pretty tight in terms of their gate space and flight frequencies, it seems to me with their 2 gates of B3 and B4 at Burbank they run their departures around the same set up of 2 arrival/departures at a time.
Thanks for the review
I’ve enjoyed your reviews over the years very much.
I specially appreciate this one since I’m looking forward to try them soon.
Thanks 🙏.
Thanks Charles - and you’re very welcome! I think you’re going to like Avelo…
@@sanspotter ❤️
Starting in Oct. 2023, Avelo will be doing nonstop flights twice a week from Salem, Oregon to Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
Yep, came here to see what people think of Avelo.
Cool little airline I have never been on them yet but if I do I will try the extra leg room row looked awesome, thanks for the review!
They do have a charter side which is doing very well for them
Amazing video as always Scott!😸
Thanks Ryan!
You have to come out to HVN. Each flight is easily 90-100% full every single day. At this point the west coast is losing us money. We could fill those 800s if we had the runway length to accommodate the planes.
thanks for your video, currently I am doing an assignment which is discussing the airlines development and this video gave me some concepts
Glad it helped Kevin!
Brilliant review, as always. 🙂
Thanks man! Very much looking forward to your next video!
Yesterday, they started flights from Burbank, CA & Orlando, FL to Brownsville, South Texas. I didn't know it's a Texas airline with its first flight from their home State. Flying with them this coming Saturday back home to FL after being deployed at the border
I flew RT STS to LAS and back. Both trips were packed! I only paid $31 RT. No bags and online checkin. Flew back 01/09/22.
Another good video Scott
Your channel is massively underrated
Thanks Tom!
Thanks for another high quality video 👍
You’re very welcome Jeremy - thanks for watching!
I had a very similar experience on this same route with the flight not being listed at the gate saying nothing(sort of, more in a sec). There was no IT issue though and the app didn’t say a gate either. I ended up having to walk the terminal looking for the gate. My previous flight on them was at C gates but this time it ended up being in B. I found the gate but it listed a flight later in the day by them to Redding. I hung out until a gate agent eventually showed up to tell us it was the gate for the flight and it was over an hour delayed coming in from Colorado.
Their airport experience definitely lacks, but the inflight experience with the leg room and great staff is always good. I fly them often from LAS to STS as I live in Vegas and I’m from Santa Rosa where my family still lives. Hope Avelo hangs in there, only ultra low cost carrier I will take.
I flew out of RSW a few weeks ago, and saw a avelo flight on the monitor which didn't have a gate like your flight. Either it was the same day, or this is a common glitch with their systems.
From what I’ve heard so far, this seems to be a common thing for Avelo. 😬
Avelo uses the same system as a bunch of other LCC’s, and that system is owned by another VERY large system that is used by some of the biggest airlines in the world - when that system was purchased there were definite issues with how the larger company integrated them which caused some outages.
"I really hate being confused about being confused "😂😅
It’s confusing! 🤬😄
How long will they last? Well….considering they are hauling hundreds of passengers in and out of New Haven every day to and from 14 different cities…I think they will be fine. Pretty much seen now as Connecticut’s hometown airline…even with all the other airlines serving Hartford.
From our local news in Maryland " Starting June 30, the airline will fly nonstop five days a week to Orlando, and starting July 1, three days a week to Wilmington, North Carolina. It is promoting fares on those flights as little as $29 one-way"
Great video Scott! Love seeing and Avelo Airlines review, it looked like an interesting trip. 🤔 Hope to test them out soon. Also it would not be a SANspotter review without Surfshark …
Great Job! 👍☝️
Thanks Caleb! Definitely try them if you can (both Avelo and Surfshark 😆).
@@sanspotter did you try out avatar airlines yet
@@sanspotter Ya I’d love to try both. I think I’ll try Surfshark!

Hey Scott, what about those shoes? Anyway, Avelo just started at TUS flying to BUR. Hope they do well and grow. Great video
Having the same feelings. Their ad budget is just enough for the elevator doors in the Downtown Burbank parking garage by AMC. Thought maybe some street light banners. This may have been given by the city since Avelo hubs (if you wanna call it that) at BUR.
Good Luck to Avelo Airlines.
Hey what do you do at these places you fly to? Or do you just hop on a plane fly somewhere then fly back? Lol just curious
Avelo recently announced they are going to be flying out of PHF(Newport News VA, 35 minutes for Norfolk Airport) to Orlando this fall 2022. Its good because right now, thats a very small airport with next to no airlines leaving out of it, aside from Allegiant going to Sanford FL and I think United. I hope Avelo does last because Id love to do random trips to Orlando for $59 for a weekend
That "extra leg room" seat was once a Southwest jet. Aevlo leased most of its planes from SWA
I talked to someone who is leaving LA area moving to Boise, ID. She told me a lot of passengers flying from Boise to Burbank are commuting…they have a job in Burbank but live in Boise area. They come to LA work a few days then go back to Boise. This airline makes it easy…frequent cheap nonstop flights.
Avelo is will start destinations at Lakeland Florida(Lakeland Linder International Airport)starting in May or June 2024 which is between Tampa and Orlando.
Just be happy you got to your destination safe
I live in Raleigh with family in CT. Avelo is ROCKING with us in this area.
I do like your presentation style. I'm thinking about taking a holiday to Costa Rica later this year, flying British Airways from Gatwick, UK. When I fly I will install Surf Shark on my iPhone.
Avelo is coming to Binghamton NY in November I think and tickets starting at $79 straight to Orlando I'll be taking advantage of it soon enough
Hopefully add some more routes out of MHT. It would be nice if someone flew non stop to Vegas from somewhere in New England other than Boston
u guys like avelo? I flew it last yr when they 1st opened from Burbank to Montana and it was fine
They had an IT meltdown on their inaugural flight out of AZA as well. Then, they cancelled my return flight and then the AZA-BUR route all together... The staff was vey nice and helpful sorting out the details so I cannot fault the workers on the ground, great people!! The legroom was fantastic too. Also, the flight was only $48 roundtrip! Really hope they sort out their tech and route issues.
$48 round trip! 🤯😄 I wouldn’t mind them raising their fares slightly if it helps them reach profitability. They can’t be making much money with fares that low.
I wonder how the pilots decide on working for Avelo, compared to one of the majors where the pay and security would be better. On the other hand, if Avelo survives, the someone in on the ground floor could win big.
Great video! Where did you get those great shoes??
Never heard of Avelo before your experience here. Interesting...except for the manual check in...seems to be a better version of Spirit Airlines, whom I've also never flown.
They don't come anywhere near DFW yet...so I probably will be waiting some more to try them....if they get there.
They may not fly to DFW, but Avelo is actually headquartered in Houston and run by many of the same people who used to run Continental.
@@cxa340 Good info!! I miss Continental. lol
sitting at BWI now and they can’t check anyone in due to technical difficulties. safe to say, i’lll save $30 and fly frontier or spirit next time.
I am flying Avelo for the first time in June (Pasco to Burbank, aka "The Cartel route") and was wondering how strict their personal item restrictions are? The website says 14" x 9" x 9" and, well, that's a purse, because not even a small backpack is that small. In the video, the guy on the jetway in front of you has a carry-on suitcase, but also a backpack. Did he have to pay for 2 carry-on pieces?
UPDATE: I have now made the trip. I abided by the stated carry-on size on the way down, bringing on only a cinch bag. And I saw dozens of people with small backpacks (under 20L, not travel backpacks) and they were allowed on as a personal item. I brought one of these smaller backpacks down with me in my checked luggage, so I could for hike in California. I used it as my personal item on the return trip and did not get any pushback from the gate people... Could this change over time? Maybe, but right now it is not an issue.

Haha, thanks Lee!
Avelo is here to stay!!
They’ve found a nice sweet spot out of FNL for LAS. A nice small alternative to the busy bustle of DEN and it’s one of the biggest markets out of FNL
I almost chose to do that route instead, but I couldn’t find a way to make it back to San Diego the same day.
@@sanspotter ah shucks! Hope to eventually see you at FNL!!! Big fan and I work the ramp!
The Mountainbiker is officially here!!!!
Scott for some reason I didn't get your notification that's been going around pretty commonly as of lately RUclips has done something and most of the notifications I get I have not been getting from RUclips so my apologies for being late!!!!!
Availo ??? Haven't heard much from them as lately looking forward to this review I've been wanting to see if they live up to the hype that everybody says that they do....
Welp let's fly.....
You’re here! 😄 Since you’re usually one of the first to comment I figured that you were either A). sick of my videos, or B). busy with other things. Either way I’d totally understand. 😅 Anyway, Avelo is expanding in your part of the country so it may not be long before you have the opportunity to try them for yourself. 👍🏻👍🏻
This airline do got potential especially with his low prices I wonder when is it going to come to the Midwest and maybe Michigan or Ohio might become one their main hubs
Where did you see 803XT was built in 2001? Planespotters and Airfleets say 2006 as does the FAA registry.
Oops! I just checked planespotters again and you’re right - it seems I misread “2021” as “2001”. 🤦🏼♂️ Thanks for the correction!
These kinda carriers rarely last long. And at 40% load factor, they bled cash operating the flight.
HVN base has load factors of over 95% every day. If only the 800s could fly out of HVN we'd be able to fill those as well.
Does anyone know if they are strict on the personal items bag?
Santa Rosa does indeed look gorgeous!
Great Review as usual Scott, I am actually visiting California and seeing some family during the Holidays and my School Winter Break but I can't wait to see your next video. Also, who agrees that SANspotter is the best reviewer out there for airlines and hotels in 2021? Because this is some quality content!
Thanks so much for the ringing endorsement Aria! Hope you have a great trip!
Hopefully for a while, we need more airlines in the USA. Competition is always good.
Part of the reason you have to try to extra legroom seats is their standard seat has a 29 inch pitch.
Do not be so sure - the plane is already paid for, the crews are home every night, there costs are exceptionally low, and that plane routed BUR-STS-LAS and back so it had other flights with higher loads.
May I suggest a tour of the US finding the best cheese and fruit platters? Airport only, of course!
Now THAT sounds like my kind of challenge! 😆
Based on the airlines policies, was your backpack allowed as a personal item or did you have to pay any fees??
It’s free, based on avelo website.
I am happy they came to cwa
I hope they turn into hub and spoke for the north east and southwest I feel like they could get a good foot hold in undeserved areas of the northeast alone post Covid. They could undercut the big players fly transcon to between their hubs and maybe even connect the west to Florida. I feel like avelo would be great airline to compete with the big carriers since they have 2 hubs or even fly from mid sized cities to Canadian airports with US customs so they can even offer service to non international airports in big cities since its domestic
They just announced their Series B funding and plans to increase their fleet by 9 additional aircraft. Thoughts?
Hope the super low fares include some funds for maintenance.
Jesus guy… all airliners have to pass checks based on their hours they are at… not based on the livery on the side of the plane.
Nice review Scott! I'm also curious to see how this airline will do in the long term. Hope it survives. Wow, at 10:00 you flew over the Oakland Coliseum!
Thanks man! I really want to see them survive as well, because we need a lot more ultra low-cost carrier competition here in the US. And yeah, the views of the Bay Area were incredible on the way in!
@@sanspotter or they need to move to lax
@@ojaaviation Yeah they should and maybe to SAN & SNA too but perhaps it's too expensive for them right now but good suggestion.
@@ontariotransitreviews6682 yeah lax will be good for them they can be where terminal 1.5 where frontier used to be
That Airport at Santa Rosa my goodness! You be lucky if you find a stale Snickers bar in a vending machine with jammed coins in it let alone chicken and rice lol. Love your reviews as always👍
Thanks! Haha, yeah, the food options were…limited. It was a cool little airport though!
What's the point of extra leg room if you're still scrunched in a 18 in width seat?
I want those red shoes. Where can i find them ?
Hi I am planning to take this airline from Fort Lauderdale to Raleigh. How would you rate this airline from one to ten? Did they lose your luggage. How was the customer service
They had an IT meltdown at the same time as the company that handles your website. Probably the same company doing both. I won't put that one on the airline. I'm just surprised they're cramming 737's into STS now. That landing looked like a float-slam lol
I didn’t think about it, but it could have been related. It was awfully coincidental. But yeah, a 737 parked at the small STS terminal looks a bit out of place. 😄
Hey Scott, still searching for the elusive chicken & rice 😂 A good review of what seems to be a promising new airline 👍
Spoiler alert: there was no chicken and rice to be found at STS. 😩😄 Glad you enjoyed the video!
I really hope Avelo succeeds, and a snack on a $59 flight? how great.
Yeah, that’s hard to beat! Hope they can survive offering fares that low.
Flight aware will tell you best app out there
I also like what used to be McCarran! Did not realize it had a bad reputation?..As for how long Avelo might survive, it’s keeping small…hopefully it works out..
I don’t think it’s the airport that has a bad reputation - it’s more about Vegas in general. And yeah, I’m hoping it works out for them too!
When talking about leg room, it would help if you tell us the seat pitch or at least how tall you are. "Great" leg room means something entirely different to a person 5"4" than it does to someone 6'4".
I’m 5’-10”
A very tenuous link into your sponsor there.... 😂
Seems great Scott! Wonder what the name Avelo means?
I think it means “no chicken and rice served onboard” but I could be mistaken. 😆
Hopefully Avelo stays for a long time. They’re beginning service at MHT in June and plan for the airport to be like New Haven. I hope it happens and I hope Avelo stays for long because MHT needs it
8:44 CRACKERS?! Those aren't crackers, they're Lorna Doone's! They're a low-sugary, buttery taste festival! 🤣
I remembered that from a sketch comedy show, maybe MadTV or something. Lol
I found it! ruclips.net/video/Q18tv5omkFA/видео.html
So, how was the legroom?
i like the concept behind Avelo, but they must get new planes such as A320neo or 737MAX ASAP. Their planes are really old.
The 737 I was on was pretty nice actually (except for a few spots on the floor). Would definitely love to see them get new planes though.
There planes are from Turkish, TUI, and Southwest and have an average age lower than the age for UA’s or AA’s 737 NG’s

My favorite flight reviewer was in my hometown and I’m just now finding out about it??
Sorry for the sorry excuse for an airport here in Sonoma County 😬
Edit: thanks. Santa Rosa is a pretty nice place. Also, I can see my house from this window. 😁
I actually really liked the airport! I’m going to post a written review of Alaska E175 first class from STS to SAN on my blog soon, and I’ve got lots of nice things to say about it. 👍🏻
omg, I live in Vegas! Would have loved the opportunity to meet my favorite AvGeek!!! Next time you're in town, Chicken and Rice on me!
oh yeah, I work less than a mile from the airport, and you literally fly right over my office on take off! hahahahaha great to see ya here in the Sin City!
Thanks Erin! As you will see I’m the video I’m uploading tomorrow, I went to Vegas again. Just a quick trip though…no time to see the sights (or consume chicken and rice 😆).
Here in 2024, just paid $284.84 for a flight from Salem OR to Burbank CA
I honestly don’t know who will be around longer Avelo or breeze? I’d like to say breeze since the a220 with mixed layouts and David neeleman being the ceo! Will you be trying breezes new destinations from Long Island?
I’d say that Breeze has a better chance of survival (better / more experienced management team) but I’m definitely rooting for both. I can’t wait to try the new Breeze business class seat next year! Not sure if that will include any segments out of Long Island though…
Breeze SEEMS nice but I have NO desire to fly to Brittsburgh any time soon
To be honest I think they'd be better off with an a220 or even smaller for those smaller airports, I doubt they'd fill a 737
When are you going to go international again?
I was hoping to do a quick trip to Europe in January, but with all this Omicron stuff happening (and all of the extra testing hoops to jump through because of it), I’m not sure yet…
I hope they come to MHT
