There's always been something different about Etho. He stands out and is hugely influential, yet he flies under the radar of being mainstream. Absolute legend in my opinion.

i think part of his appeal is his community in that the people who watch him are really there for *him* ya know, and the fact he flies under the radar by refusing to acknowledge the conventions of youtube, it just helps maintain that amazing group of loyal fans. Hes honestly just so chaotic and wholesome at the same time in a way that feels like an old friend you never really have to catch up with because you know eachother that well, and theres something so deeply comforting about that

Do you know the tragedy of the man who played Patch Adams? Its not one the Jedi would tell. A funny man who brought light and happiness to many. The moral is the people who eat the badness feel like they cant/shouldn't let badness affect themselves, and the badness piles up, eventually the worst bad thing happens.

Gronkhs Lets Play series deserves a honourable mention in this, he made 1278 Minecraft episodes over a time of four years (2010 to 2014) and uploaded a new episode every day, sometimes even two per day. He is a german Lets Player who is very well known in Germany (for a while he was actually the youtuber with the most subscribers in Germany, currently he has almost 5 million subscribers), and his Lets Play series was very influencial for the german Minecraft community, as many people got to know Minecraft through him and he also popularized some trends and concepts in Minecraft.
I think he might be one of the record holders for the highest number of Lets Play episodes of Minecraft, although some might have overtaken him by now. Of course is also depends on how long you make Lets Play episodes (his were 15 to 20 minutes long).

There is a swedish SMP called 90gq that started in October of 2010 that is running on the same map til this day. The owner of the server is a swedish youtuber called STAMSITE. He has a let's play series centered around the 90gq server that has been going on since the start of the server itself.
STAMSITE's let's play series is split up in a number of seasons, the first one being called "Let's play Minecraft online (Svenska)". I don't know the exact number of total episodes but I'm pretty sure it's more than Etho's total number of episodes!
STAMSITE and other players are still very active on 90gq and nowadays the server is quite focused on roleplaying. For example players are creating companies and engaging in trade with fictional contracts for different things. I think I heard somewhere that 90gq is the oldest Vanilla Minecraft server that hasn't changed its map at some point!

    • @IanSmithKSP
      @IanSmithKSP 4 года назад +17

Etho’s redstone engineering skills are top notch. He was the first to discover block update detection, which he called a BUD switch. This was featured in his pop up sheep farm. He also invented early clocks and the hopper clock which is a total cornerstone of any advanced redstone device. He also discovered in his BUD switch invention day/night detectors which he used to play a song for morning and night. He’s designed numerous hostile mob farms over the years which were each on the cutting edge at the time. He was also one of the first people to fully automate potion brewing. If you watch just a couple of his episodes, you quickly realize how inventive he is. If his life would’ve started differently, he without a doubt could’ve become an engineer. He solves problems and polishes designs to solve those problems before anyone else even realizes there’s a problem to be solved.
I’ve been watching Etho since 2011 and his ethics are really really pure. He’s a great person. I recall at one point around 2012 he talked about how someone from RUclips actually called him on the phone and told him a variety of ways he could grow his channel and attract new viewers, but his style hasn’t changed one bit, so presumably he didn’t listen to them.
His nature style of building is likely inspired by his experience as a gardener. During his early years of the LP, Etho worked in a greenhouse and RUclips was just a hobby. I’m sure he’s making decent money now, but not as much as he would if he were a clickbait sellout. But he’s not. And we all love him for it.

I grew up watching a modded Minecraft series from a RUclipsr called Poet Plays. It started from the very beginning of Fossils And Archeology and still goes on today, passing the 800 mark. Sure, since it’s a mod from early Aether times it’s not as old as the series talked about in the video, but it still holds a special place to me and it’s very very long

I never stopped watching Etho even when I wasn't playing MC much anymore.
He's one of the most kind-hearted people I "know" and I don't think his personna is fake whatsoever.
I believe he is genuinely a very good person.
I don't have any clue what the fuck he is doing half of the time with redstone since I never put the time to learn it myself but it doesn't matter.
His builds, ideas, his wit, explainations and adventures are what makes him such a great RUclipsr and he deserves all the recognition he can get.
It's one of the few people I can only hope for good things to happen to them all the time.

The thing that sets Etho apart from everybody else is not his gameplay, it's his personality and character traits that has remained largely unchanged since the start.
Sure, his calm, almost drugged-up demeanor has changed over the years, but he still stands true to his values.
He doesn't accept donations, he makes no partnership deals, he doesn't clickbait or ask for any favours, and the fact that we have not seen his appearence makes him seem more mystical. He can be whatever we want him to be.
Etho has played his cards very well, and for that, I regard him as one of the true G.O.A.Ts, not only of the gaming scene, but the internet in general.

Just discovered your channel, but as a long time Etho superfan (8 years and counting) I have to say your research with this was amazing. While not going too into detail over the impact Etho has/had on modern gameplay, you still make it clear to a general audience how much of an icon the man is. Seriously, if someone who didn't know a thing about Minecraft at all watched this video, the editing and writing would still deliver the message of Etho's legacy. It's great to see that people are realizing the same Etho from a decade ago is still going strong, since in many ways he walked so that technical RUclipsrs today like Mumbo could run. The catch, however, is that Etho is still walking alongside the people he inspired, demonstrating his longevity and dedication to the game and community surrounding it.
I also checked out some of your other content, and I really like the way you present the history of Minecraft as a culture cinematically. It's like I'm watching a History Channel docuseries that is actually historically and scientifically relevant. Subscribed
