People here still use the small square bales. Maybe then you could store them inside. I guess the white plastic you could use for cold frames. Just thinking to recycle that. Yes it is so hard to eliminate all plastic. 😃

If anyone criticizes you for this, they have bigger problems. We’re trying to live with less plastic, less waste, but most of us aren’t perfect. You guys are pretty damn close to perfection, living the way you do. I truly admire you.

"If anyone criticizes you for this, they have bigger problems"
Yes. Either that, or they chose to overlook the fact that sometimes, circumstances in real day-to-day life will eventually call for some compromises. They've got the sheep, and they need to be fed through winter. Simple as that. And if last summer's hay yield was bad for them, what were they supposed to do, right?
The ones who critisize them for this should try to walk in their shoes for a whole winter... Bet that would shut them right up(!).

What strikes me about your regenerative homesteading is the constant challenges and problem solving in your daily life. You are both taking on multiple projects, doing things for the first time. And always approaching each task with a lot of thought and planning and ecological sensitivity to tread lightly on the earth, always thinking how it can be better, like what to do about the plastic around the bales of hay which you had to buy this year. Watching you both tackle each project is really inspiring and impressive and I appreciate the knowledge and experience you are sharing and your enthusiasm, dedication and humility. We seem to be living in an era where those who are genuinely trying alternatives get critiqued by "keyboard warriors" but it doesn't matter in the end, because what you're doing is real and meaningful and the appreciation and positive comments here far outweigh the unfair criticism anyhow. .
Can I say I just love seeing your place in snow! The drone footage, walks in the forest and Ivar enjoying himself and helping out as soon as he could walk it seems! What a wonderful life for a child. Wishing you the best result possible for your floorboards. How amazing to source and mill your own timber! Bravo! With Love from Greece.

Please do not knock yourself for not getting things done. You have MUCH to occupy yourselves with as a family. I am happy that you have the opportunity of a sawmill for your wood needs...this alone is a great assistance for you. It is always nicer to do the work yourselves rather than buy it from another. It will make your house a 'home', with little imperfections here and there. Even the rich do not have the best in craftsmanship many times. As for the plastic bales...as soon as I saw them I thought; 'Matthias will not like having them in plastic, to be sure.' We have to learn 'better ways' and this is not always done quickly. It will come. I often think of your little family and pray for you...an ol' grandma in QC Canada. Take care and God Bless!

I don’t know your board width is but a portable planer should even them out. As to the edge, routing a tongue and groove on the edge with a router should be simple.

possibly to be able to watch tongue and groove videos? I think a heavy duty router and such is much cheaper than the beautiful floor you will have. And there are rugs for trippy spots! when we raised cattle we used smaller bales and put them uncovered into barns. as long as the hay was cut dry. There is nothing worse than opening your back door and smell that oder of hay burning from the inside out in your barn

    Mathias,
Regarding making the floorboards level, do not worry too much about milling the rough boards exactly to the same thickness. The rough boards will contract at different rates, warp and twist as wet wood does. Let them dry and do their thing. You do not have to spend a fortune on a surface planer. You do not have to hand plane all the boards down to a constant thickness. According to the book, "The Woodwright's Workbook", by Roy Underhill, I quote page 228:
"Because the original building was built in four stages during the war, we devised numerous details to indicate the different periods of construction. The sawn-through brace and empty mortices of removed walls would be easy to spot, but one of the more subtle distinguishing features was the method used to "gauge in" the flooring. To lay a level floor of hand-sawn boards of uneven thickness, they must be adzed to the thickness of the thinnest board wherever they cross joists. [Only where they cross the joists.] This leaves the top surface level and lets the "fat" hang down below. To guide the adzing, there are three common ways of gauging the boards. The first method uses a carpenter's gauge and a rabbet plane to establish the guidelines for the adze. We used the other two methods, one in each of the two shops with upper floors.
The first shop floor was gauged in the English manner, using a sash fillister plane to cut a small rabbet at a constant width from what would be the upper surface. For the second shop floor, we used a method we found in Southampton County, Virginia. We first scratched the constant line with a marking gauge and then drawknifed a bevel down to the line."
The photographs show the bottom side of the floorboard scalloped out with the adze just where the floorboard crosses the floor joist. By the way, next page explains how to "spring" the floorboards really tight when installed.
Mathias, I am convinced that the floor will turn out beautiful and level.
    Best regards,
    Robert

It's more important that you recognize the impact than it is to recognize negative comments. You are carving out a beautiful life, don't let us deter you. Keep moving forward with as much grace and love as you can and we all benefit from watching it unfold. The negative comments, are simple comments, nothing more. They make a wooden plane to both puts a groove and tongue in the boards. May I suggest when you are cutting the boards, you need to put in a shim every foot or you are consistently cutting on an uneven surface as the saw cuts and removes wood.

My father in law gave a bunch of wood he got from the mill he worked at that had gone through the planer wrong so it had varied thickness. I bought a thickness planer and used that to even it out to make my flooring. Worked great and I still use the planer. I also picked up a dado blade for my table saw to make my tongue and grooves. It was way cheaper than buying flooring and looks great 30 years later. Good luck.

I think that you trying to do things in a careful and sustainable way, as much as possible is a good thing. It is very difficult to do everything that way, but you do the best you can and as much as you are able. Every little bit helps. I live in a small town and I recycle what I can of the things we use; however, not everyone does that. So I do the best I can where I am. We also try to reuse things for other purposes. If everyone does what they can, then I think the world is still better. Don't worry about the negative things people say. Only look at the things that will be a help to you and don't worry about the rest. I love watching your videos and you and your wife have a lot of hard work and things to do every day. You are NOT a hypocrite! We see your heart for the natural environment and you are (and will) figure out how to use less plastic, etc. You only have 24 hours a day and you have so much to do. Your son mimics his parents and already know how to work in his own way - what an encouragement to see the next generation embrace the appreciation of nature and the importance of family.

You are doing such a good job with Ivar. I loved seeing him walk up that slope by himself. He has very good self confidence.Ignore the critics. The people who matter dont mind and the people who mind dont matter. Those floorboards are very good. The cabin will be beautiful when it is done. Thanks for sharing this video with us.

I wouldn't worry too much about comments about doing contradictory things (like using the plastic). Because whenever you put yourself out there in the world, like through RUclips, you will always get people that want to take you down a notch. Always. You guys are doing a great job out there!

I haven't read all the other comments about the floorboards but I would consider half lapped joints rather than tongue and grooved - if I understood what you were saying correctly. It will be a lot easier to machine and is a more traditional, older style than T & G at least here in the UK. Here it was very common just to have square edged boards in most houses until around 1900. Our 1896 house has all the original square edged boards except in one room where they are half lapped.

He's independent. no matter how many times he falls he wakes up and keep moving without crying or asking for hug. May God bless your wife and you with lots of strength. 🙌🙏🙌

Walking around in the woods and all that fresh air will surely tire him for a nice nap. A little uneven floor boards in a log home are to be expected. Oh and Ivar has sweet little giggles. Potty training is hard
