      This makes sense to my poor twisted mucked up sense of what’s good bad or right and wrong, I’m so fed up with feeling guilty at what I may or may not eat, now I think the over whelming feeling will be gratefulness and still making sure I get the meat from a well raised and properly run farm. I really didn’t know that growing more and more vegetables was hurting the Earth. When I think of how would we survive through a particularly bad winter and summer, with out hot houses and manure, it all does make sense doesn’t it.

    I'm originally from the north of Scotland, so know the difficulties of growing food crops in a chancy climate. If you know frost is coming, one emergency measure (and inexpensive) is to cover your outdoor crops with bedsheets. Plastic is even better of course but old white or pale bedsheets keep frost off the plants (the trick is to not let them touch the plants though so use plastic piping or stout branches to keep them off) and they still let light and water through. I did this in May this year when we had hard frosts and snow.
    We're retired, but next spring we will be selling our property here and relocating to Sweden. So your lovely videos are very valuable for us to watch. Thank you for making them and showing reality, the good and the "bad" (which isn't really). :)

      We pay a lot of attention to Scotland because we don't get very warm in summer either- watermelons are impossible without a poly tunnel to trap the heat.

      Why Sweden? it is so cold there or did you go in the south? We have our self-catering garden in Germany and i think its even could here. Without greenhouse you can`t earn so much you need to have for whole Year. This year we had no Frost only from June to July- thats not enough time for the most plants. Greatings from Germany!- From Gardener to Gardener :-)

    • @inatera6086
      @inatera6086 2 года назад

      From other homesteaders in Alaska, I've seen that they ensure planting below the frost line when they make greenhouses, using logs to cover the walls. then having the beds raised - some use reflective tin so that the sunshine bounces off each other. Many cover the greenhouse either with a polly tunnel, or with reclaimed old windows. Because the greenhouse is dug way below the frost line, the earth's warmth adds to the overall warmth of the greenhouse. Also an old plastic barrel painted black filled with water and sealed is used to absorb the heat of the sun then release during the night. If added warmth is needed, a Finnish Candle can be used to heat the area.

    The tree climb was very impressive when rescuing your drone. Seems like weather all over the world is changing, we have not had such a good hot summer this year, quiet a lot of rain here in the UK. Your new cabin and other structures on your property are coming on nicely. Ivor is growing up so quickly. Till the next video. By the way your cinematography is fantastic.

    Every season brings its own set off challenges/ frustrations but we have to learn how to plan for such occasions and over time we accrue a library of knowledge. Is there a way of getting tomatoes going earlier so that when they are transplanted out they have a head start. If conditions are wet do I have drier paddocks where I can put my stock. so on and so forth.I know from your vlogs you both have had frustration with the lack of time to do work and finish projects.
    Ivar is a beautiful boy but he takes up a lot of your time, it will improve over time................spontaneity goes out the window when we have children.
    With regard to the major challenge of pouring a concrete roof on the cheese store you will need ALOT of form work fully supported, concrete is 'very heavy' and the gravity principle does apply. You will need reinforcing mesh set in the middle of the concrete and this mesh needs to be tied into the walls. When you get to pouring the roof it would be good to have two cement mixers going ............ the pour should be continuous.I wish you well.
    Changing the subject, regen ag has a lot of benefits and is practiced here in Austra;lia but not on a broad scale. Rotational grazing, cell grazing is more common and has benefits too. With any of these systems they need to be tuned to your specific region/area/location, for me here if conditions a dry I will need to adjust the stocking rate, or I have to feed hay or silage or crop to get them through the dry period. The biggest challenge comes when we have breeding animals, animals that are lactating require a lot of maintenance. quite often people run dry stock as they can often do well in tough conditions....It's all good fun keeps us on our toes.
    As always stay safe. look forward to episode 88

    After many years of intense research and 1000's of interviews...I have determined that Ivar...is the cutest little bug in the rug. Such a sweet and calm joy emanating from his being. And Mom and Dad looking very handsome these days!! I am almost 3 yrs watching now. Your films are some of the best photography and editing I have ever seen. The music is always spot on. An intense dreamscape.

    You climbed that nasty looking tree in your bare feet?? You must have soles of steel! Sorry you had such an early frost but the sheep must be happy for the cooler weather. Great progress on your cheese cellar.

      Barefoot is the best way to climb trees. The native tribes dont use shoes either. Just our civilized perspective point of view

    Your son is sooo cute! My boy is about the same age. Also first child. We live in the mountains and i wonder if i can ask u, what are your ideas for friends for your son as he gets bigger? How do you find other kids for him to grow with?

    I do hope you will not get more frost until the tomatoes are ripe. I have had an abundance of tomtoes this year and have loved every bite! We have had it very hot this summer, NE Tennesse USA. I am looking forward to fall, but not winter. Ivar is such a lovely child, I can't get enough of watching him. Your drone footage is amazing, glad you didn't fall out of the tree when retrieving it.

    Excellent video! Thanks so much. Ivar in the berry patch was just adorable. The stick incident at the end reminded me of my old Granny. She would shout at us It is all fun and games until someone pokes their eye out. It made me smile to remember my childhood.
