  • In 1959 Sir Malcolm Sargent recorded his third of four Messiahs in Huddersfield Town Hall with Elsie Morison soprano, Marjorie Thomas contralto, Richard Lewis tenor and James Milligan baritone.
The Australian Elsie Morison won the Dame Nellie Melba Scholarship in 1945, and the Queen's Prize at the Royal College of Music,London in 1947. She died in Prague 2016,aged 91 years.
In 1963, she married the Czech conductor Rafael Kubelík, and decided to retire from singing in public.
She attended all his concerts for the remainder of his career.Very much a loving couple.
1... Here she sings I Know That My Redeemer Liveth.
3...James Milligan bass, born in Canada died suddenly in 1961 at the age of 33, sings The Trumpet Shall Sound.
4...Huddersfield Choral Society sings Worthy is the Lamb and the Amen Chorus.
All sung to the early/mid 20th century Novello Vocal Score. I like it. :)
    Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
EARLY STEREO. CLOSING 'HIGHLIGHTS' of this famous Messiah.
Enjoy a Blast from the Past! :)

All schools should help their pupils to sing this once a year or so.....all pupils together in a beautiful local hall for public to attend free.....

My dad was a great admirer of this lovely soprano. The big band sound tempo and rubato is not to modern tastes but the voice is ethereal.

Long tho I have listened to this old and cherished vynil recording this segment always brings tears to mine eyes . for it is at this moment that Handel was truly above his realm. Add to this that Sir Malcom
Sargent brought this to the world thru the Huddersfield and Elsie Morrison , Handel as he shall, never be heard again in his full strength , integrity and solemnity .

What a treat! Always liked Miss Morrison's crystal clear, edgy voice, eqipped w a nice vibrato, clean phrasing. Grand for Handel's famous Messiah.

My first acquaintance with Messiah came from receiving the Angel records one record "Highlights" album. I remember it featured Elsie Morrison, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, and, of course, the Huddersfield Choral Society. Over the past 60 plus years I have gotten other versions of the Messiah but this one has always remained my favorite. Particularly the orchestra arrangements. I have long since lost my original record and thought I would never hear it again. So just in case I entered the Huddersfield Choral society in You tube and voila--your posting appeared. Thank you for reuniting me with an old and dear friend in this version of Messiah. .

Pleased the Huddersfield appeared in your Search! This Messiah remains my absolute favourite. Regarding the Huddersfield, that is why I squeeeeeeeeezed "Huddersfield Choral Soc." into the main title!! RUclips repeatedly told me my Title was too long, but I persevered and presto----success. :)
Your comments make very interesting reading----much appreciated. Thankyou.

Elsie Morison sings not only with beauty, but with such conviction. James Milligan was a fine artist who merited more recordings.

I like her voice for the Messiah. Somehow her voice seems absolutely right for this oratorio. I only discovered earlier this year James Milligan died so terribly young. This has always been my favourite Messiah. :)

I agree and I am also very fond of Morison's recording of Mendelssohn's 'Hear my prayer. There is also an Australian opera film of The Bartered Bride on you tube in which she sings Marenka that shows just how good and vivacious she was on stage too.
James Milligan kept illustrious company - Jon Vickers, Lois Marshall, Birgit Nilsson all sang with him and it is such a shame that a heart failure ended his life after a very successful first Wotan at Bayreuth. I will be trying to find the recordings of Belshazzar's Feast ( perfect for his voice I should think) and Christus in St Matthew Passion. Best musical wishes for the New Year 2017

Hello lochness11 I lost touch with you over the years on Utube .I see you are like me and admire great music and recordings from the past. I have got new digitised recordings of the HCS ‘s 1946 Messiah the one with Isabel Bailey soprano performing what treat after the war I was taken to the Town Hall a boy of 11 years old.

Looks like Nureyev behind the conductor!! Always wondered what had happened to bass baritone James Milligan, a v solid singer. His sudden death was a definite loss to music.
Thanks for all the info on this video, lochness11

Can the downloader share how he achieved such sonic loveliness from an LP? Much due to the fact that this was recorded by the tube EMI BTR3 recorder in 1959. I surmise this was recorded direct from mikes to the recorder, no mixers in betweeen. I have the abridged Music for Pleasure 1988 Cd can achieve this on my tube cdp, but somehow the 2-disc set released years later cant get this transparency due to perhaps incompetent mastering. (ADD) The 88 CD was marked ADD too, but I think it might actually had been AAD, hence more analog sounding.
