    EARLY STEREO. 1959.
These pieces are the main soprano Airs in Part 1 of the Novello Vocal Edition sung by Elsie Morison with impeccable diction, clean tone and clarity.
ENJOY A BLAST FROM THE PAST. :)
    There were shepherds...
    And lo the angel...
    Chorus:Glory to God...
    AT 3:37:- Rejoice Greatly...
Elsie Morison, born Australia 1924 died 2016 in Prague age 91 years,
She won the Dame Nellie Melba Scholarship in 1945, and the Queen's Prize at the Royal College of Music, London in 1947.
In 1963, she married the Czech conductor Rafael Kubelík, and decided to retire from performing. She did sing occasionally post-retirement.
She was admired for the touching sincerity of her acting and the lyrical warmth of her voice as Blanche in the British premiere of Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites in 1958.
Sir Malcolm Sargent, ends his Recording Notes about this 1959 Messiah recording:-
"The choruses are sung by a hundred picked voices from the famous Huddersfield Choir, with whom I have rehearsed and performed the Messiah annually for over twenty years.
The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra play the original string, trumpet and drum parts, plus orchestrations which I have arranged, unhesitatingly adopting any good ideas from earlier experienced editors.
A conductor always hopes that his next performance of a work will be better than his last.
This recording, with the benefits of stereophonic reproduction,is better than my previous efforts, and again one can only repeat the hope that many will receive pleasure and spiritual edification from this masterpiece, which will remain one of the world's "wonders" as long as there is music". MALCOLM SARGENT. 1959.
    AVAILABLE ON CDs.

Elsie was the first soprano I ever heard sing "Messiah" and I still thrill to her dynamic sound.

Elsie Morison, one of the finest lyric sopranos of the 20th century in the sublime music of Handel. An uplifting ' Rejoice Greatly.'

@@jacquesmaisonjones8817 Once she married Rafael Kubelik she decided to concentrate on him , his career and above all caring for his young son ( Kubelik's first wife had died when the boy was about 8 or 9 years old.) I read that she felt she had accomplished her greatest wish which had been to sing at Covent Garden. It took her some time to clear her book of concert engagements, but when she did officially retire it was at a concert conducted by Kubelik. Her last item was ' Songs my mother taught me ' from the Gypsy songs by Dvorak. Elsie's mother was in the audience and she had been Elsie's very first singing teacher so that was really nice.

I believe every soprano has a piece that suites them and this lady without doubt performs "I know that my redemer liveth" from this same creation.

No modern performance of this music moves me the way this performance does. So much quality in singing and conviction has been lost in the search for ‘authenticity’.

A very amateur sound from the choir in contrast to the lovely voice of Elsie Morrison wonderfully suited to Handel's music.
