Again, as a professional violinist as well as a singer, this is the cleanest, best articulated diction I've ever heard and I've played this wonderful oratorio at least 50 times with all levels of singers in the performance. Some of them are quite well known. Bar none, no one has ever sung or played this piece as well as these performers do. What an absolutely magnificent work! Brava, Brava, Brava!!!!! (& I love the period Instruments!!)
I once went to hear Ueno music university sing this and I was moved to tears. Although they were Japanese they sung it perfectly in English and there must have been about 150 singers. It was overwhelming.
To produce a work at this level of musicianship during the year of Covid is indeed an extraordinary achievement - the singers & musicians are performing at a very high standard. It's a very fine, performance. If you haven't heard it I also recommend listening to the following: ruclips.net/video/2-QV_I-xseA/видео.html
Same here, Leslie. This performance is beautiful and I agree with the clean articulation comment. I have always loved the sound of period instruments. Such purity. Merry Christmas!
And as someone who has sung in that chapel many times, it's worth noting how the acoustic is so perfect for the clean aesthetic of Baroque music. It all combines into an exceptional performance.
I’ve been marveling at the clarity and articulation in the strings and vocalists, too! And the depth and warmth of their sound. (Their clarity doesn’t translate to tinniness.) I absolutely love this!
As a very old former and now retired professional concert violist, cathedral choirmaster, organist, teacher, composer and devote Christian, this is almost absolute perfection. I am disabled and bed bound now and I am literally crying with joy and dancing in my bed!
I'm listening to this recording for the nth time and just now smiling at the image of you dancing in bed 😁. And what a lovely and evocative comment you have written.. I hope you have found and can enjoy the Voces 8 treasure trove on RUclips.
Dear Viola, let's live the sacred world God gives us, each moment in the best way we can, and He always provide us to admire his creation, each time a different way to do so.
Your comment touched my heart. I’m praying for you this morning. May God bless you all the days of your life. I’m praying for your health too. Keep your eyes on Jesus. It won’t be long until we are home. I’ll look for you in heaven. We are so blessed with our Wonderful Savior Jesus Christ. Who never leaves us or forsakes us.
absolutely awful, I agree I remember once, on TV*, when a Rachmaninoff concert was interrupted - at the most beautiful place - with a commercial for - imagine - the tampons thankfully, there is a cure for that: download the music with some of YT downloaders, and the commercial brakes miraculously disappear * it was a film about an Australian pianist who having applied for a grant with the Royal College of Music was preparing an especially difficult concert (I think it was the Fourth) for his entry exam

I am 68 and I have listened to dozens renditions of Messiah throughout the past 40+ years. The angelic way Comfort Ye was sung here by the young and talented tenor does comfort me each time I listen to it. Thanks and congratulations!
My ex-boyfriend just ended our 5-yr relationship last week. Been struggling with anxiety and depression until now. This song reminds me that Jesus can only give peace. Please pray for me as well. Thank you.
You poor thing. As a fellow sufferer I know how tough depression can be, and things must feel pretty desperate now with the break up. If beautiful music like this can still touch you though that’s surely a good sign. Stay brave!
I am simply dumbstruck by the incredible musicality, clarity, deep expression, and perfectly in synch and in tune singing by all concerned here. This is the greatest and most moving performance I ever hope to hear of this great work, every note, every bar, every phrase absolute perfection, and the diction is miraculous. Congratulations and deep gratitude to all concerned! Barnaby Smith is a true musical genius.
Wow! Absolutely glorious! Perhaps the finest performance of this magnificent work that I've heard. And OH!, the trumpets on the Hallelujah Chorus! Thank you, VoiceS8 & Academy of Ancient Music. Thank you G. F. Handel. And thank you God for making so lovely a work of art possible.
This is such a beautiful and uplifting version of the MESSIAH, which comforts my soul. Thank you too very much for the subtitles .I found this concert "by chance" yesterday and it gave me and still gives me great joy and hope against all terror, wars and the growing darkness of this world. Be blessed all you who suffer from depression, trials, hopelessness and/or mourn about beloved ones. Our Lord and God Jesus Christ, the light for us Christians from the heathen nations, but first of all the Yeshua Hamashiach for all our Jewish Sisters and Brothers in Israel and all over the world: HE is in controll. Our Father in heaven will not forsake His children and His people. There is still grace to be found in HIM, who always searches for HIS in sins and guilt lost but beloved sons and daughters: Repent, while there is still time. Merry Christmas from Germany 🙂
He wiggled around far too much. That much flamoyance for a baroque-era piece in the opening thirty seconds of singing is absolutely ridiculous and a total turnoff.
Blake Morgan is a superb tenor and Comfort Yet is a perfect example of his musicianship. I had the pleasure to work with him at my church in Grand Rapids. Everything this group does sets a new benchmark for choral music and vocal solos across the globe.
I pray whoever eyes catch this God give you strength you need to overcome every battle your facing may the dark thoughts and overthinking, the doubts exist your mind right now my peace and calmness fill in your life🇧🇸❤🙏🙏
As a life time devotee of 'the Messiah', both handelian and divine, this was a most uplifting and joyous performance. I am now 78 years old and have listened to countless renderings of this wonderful piece but there are parts of this performance that are without equal. The opening aria was simply sublime, conveying just that reassuring calm and thrill of hope that Handel (and Isaiah) intended us to feel. The ability of choir and soloists to communicate the message that they sang was both moving and exciting. The use of baroque ornamentation added a sparkle and drama that was exceptional, as, unfortunately, it is often rather mannered. A great selection and arrangement. Thank you, one and all.
Yes. I totally agree. Also they resisted the temptation so prevalent these days to play some of the items at to quick a tempo. It was a truly moving performance.
Well said from another in his eighth decade of life. As time grows short this message of scripture continues to sustain me with hope in the face of darkness
I recall, only too well, performing this 60 + years ago as a boy soprano, with our local church choir. That was a 'normal' childhood back then. Still love it. A very special piece of music.
My 82nd Christmas. Up at 5 my wife was still sleeping. Four of my grandkids were up at 4:30 opening presents several hundred miles away. Separated by the pandemic. Listening to this incredible performance was a great way to begin Christmas Day 2020.
Greetings from Erfurt, Germany. This music belongs to the most best I've ever heard. Really incredible. Wonderfull. Music with power and great feeling. Even during GDR time I could buy the great performance of Messiah with Christopher Hogwood, Judith Nelson, Emma Kirkby, Carolyn Watkinson, Paul Elliott...Choir of Christ Church Oxford and the wonderfull Academy of Ancient Music and I like it up to now for almost 40 years. But your wonderfull music with voces8 and all other great musician touches at least in the same manner my heart. Congratulation!!! Thank you all so much! Great. God bless you all! Glory to Lord. Winfried Johannes K.
I had saved this to my favorites a couple of years ago - and am so grateful to have it playing now, just pre-Christmas, 2024. Reading the comments below--the fellowship is timeless! The music is timeless! Our expressions of worship will never be old! Never!
Jocks know nothing about true humanity. They would pay $400 for a ticket to one game, but wouldn't attend a "classical" music concert for free. Pathetic.
I was a college athlete and coach who has also performed in the Messiah dozens of times. I am thankful for a father (who was also a college athlete and sits by my side every year as we sing together) for teaching me that sports and the arts are not mutually exclusive and that one can choose both.
@@bradchristensen6468 A beautiful thing. With hope that not all athletes and right-wingers view music as a non-essential subject or pursuit, I thank you for sharing this.
Having sung this as a young adult, I've had a very difficult time finding one that I like listening to....until now! I listen to this almost every day with my kids while we're home schooling!! Last night, I pulled out my score, and my 8 year old was able to look at the words so she could sing along with all the songs. I explained to her about the tradition of standing for the Hallelujah, so I went back to it to show her, and discovered, to my amazement, that the audience didn't stand in this performance!!! This is baffling to me, as it's such an automatic response for me every time I've been to a performance of Messiah!
@@richardcarroll9864 Your comment is intolerant. Nobody is being insulted. Standing is not required; you and those who like to stand may stand. The "tradition" was started by a king and democratic people who are not "subjects" may choose to make up their own minds about to respond. And to those who are not Christian, it may seem more appropriate to a religious service than a concert hall. It is not insulting for us to sit if we are unable to stand or simply do not wish to. I never ever stand for that marvelous movement, although I do get up and sit down along with others when I am a guest at a religious service. But I recommend everybody applaud enthusiastically for this beautiful music and this marvelous performance -- but that also is not required. (and as somebody pointed out, the audience may have been asked to remain seated.)
This was right on time, I cried out to God yesterday. Was feeling alone, being a single mom and not being able to achieve some things at my age. I know God heard me
I feel similar often, and i didn't even get to be a mom. At 42 and with continuing chronic health challenges and financial and other challenges with our living situation, adoption or something doesn't seem likely either. Anyways, yes, God hears us and will use us in His service wherever we are and with whatever we can do, if we live for Him ! I chafe in my life, missing farming and other things I'd rather be doing but aren't possible now, or I don't want to start on the relative's property we're temporarily renting ( I am married and my husband is a mechanic). Who knows what things God will have for us to do in the millennial reign, much less the new heavens and earth after that ?
You brought a beautiful human person, a baby, a child into this world. I have some "accomplishments" so to speak, but nothing is greater or more joy-bringing than my two sometimes challenging children. I don't know the age of your baby, but there will be time for your other gifts. Just enjoy your baby - they really do grow up so fast!!! 😍🤗
Thank you for sharing. It’s up to us all deep within ourselves to manage similar very difficult circumstances. You just helped me with your comment. I have sung and listened to Messiah for over 50 years, but never heard anything like this. It is transcendent. The Comfort Ye has such tenderness and compassion it just melts your heart. And how to detail all the brilliant and subtle ways the entire performance so perfectly expresses the words? Magnificent!
A captivating and enticing Messiah. Clean, clear voices; delightful orchestra. Although The Messiah was composed in 1741, the soloists are reading their scores from an iPad, that's 279 years later. This gorgeous, uplifting music transcends generations, change, evolution. May it continue to inspire us every Christmas. God Bless.
I think it's both Christmas and Easter, the birth and death of Christ's rrearthly life on earth! And rejoicing of Him in Heaven and on earth ,and an appearance or rather the presence of the Angel of the Lord,God Himself! The closest thing I have ever seen and heard to it was when my son tried out for choir in high school, and the Elizabethton dinner was them singing to us as some served us with the most delicious dinner as the head table sang of the celebration of Christ's birth and the men's choir sang across from the head table, my son had such a beautiful tenor voice. That year there teacher and the kids won all there competitions and went to Vienna Austria. He did that with every class, last I heard he was at the College.
An interesting application of modern technology. Maybe the means of publishing music in the future. To cottonpatch2000 - look closely. While many of the vocalist are reading from traditional coal scores, at least the soloist in “ behold your God” is reading from an iPad. I recently attended a performance of Tchaikovsky’ violin concerto in which the soloist read from an iPad.
I have watched this everyday, since I found it. My life is a happier place to be, because of it's discovery! This is a balm to my troubled mind, and it restores my faith in humanity. Thank You so much. God bless ❤🇬🇧
This performance makes me happy too.It is so easy to listen to & enjoy the smaller version of the orchestra & choir. It’s very exciting. It’s my favourite composition of Handel. The words are so clear.Delightful.
This is a 1in a thousand performance of Handel’s Messiah. The diction is so precise and yet sounds so natural. Having sung in a number of choirs & accompanying instruments, I realize how difficult it is too sing the Messiah. Thank you Academy of Ancient Music.
Listening on Christmas Eve, I agree with all the lovely comments about the quality of the performance, but I am overwhelmed by the truth of the good news that Jesus came to Earth as a baby and died for us sinners and one day we'll see Him as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Amen.
Handel would have been pleased to hear all the notes he wrote for the choir being song. Amazing. I love the liberty taken by the soloist. And OMG that BASS Fredrick Long. What Breath, Control, Soul, with tenderness and Harmonic Power. It's like the Songs had been written for him. The Orchestra such control and expression. I felt like I was taken back to 1742. I have heard the Messiah thousands of times. This performance take the cake, its an intimate performance. Thank You.
I came across this by accident, but am so glad I did. This rendering of Messiah is outstanding. It really should be the benchmark against which other performances are measured. Congratulations to everyone involved.
A most remarkable rendition of Handel's most famous composition. So incredibly light and delicate. Both orchestra and choir a delight. Thumbs up to the conductor!
Like everyone else here, I have heard many performances of Messiah. This one I would call the living version, resulting from the vibrant performances of everyone involved. Each of the soloists were obviously not only well trained singers, but so enjoyable to listen to. Their tonal qualities gave them a unique appeal as though they were famous recording artists. But I must also applaud the audio engineers recording the concert. The clarity was stunning. The acoustics were perfect for that size ensemble. Well done in capturing the performance. Even listening through laptop speakers this was captivating. Well done everyone!!!
As a practicing Christian in America.. what an ever present way to celebrate Messiah's birth! Certainly, a prayer in of itself! Thanks A Million, The Academy of Ancient Music! Outstanding performance! Timeless!
@@edsmith438 But he will rise again at the last day, for in Christ shall all be made alive. Oh death, where is thy sting? Oh grave where is thy victory?
This is the best rendition of Handel's Messiah that i have viewed and keenly listened to in my 41 years on planet earth. While it is beyond controversy that the Messiah is the yardstick to measure all classical music, G.F. HANDEL remains the best musician ever to have walked on earth surface. Kudos to the conductor, instrumentalists, soloists and the Choir. The rendition is flawless and worthy of listening to over and over again. The Messiah is indeed divinely inspired. It is the work of GOD ALMIGHTY.
Yes, yes. I sit in my room in the dimness listening to this glorification of God and I’m blessed - then I began to realize how much I’ve missed with the newer version of the Messiah. Indeed, glory be to God¡
I cannot say enough about this wonderful production of the "Messiah"! Very, very good! Period instruments; sharp video; excellent audio; highly disciplined choir; beautifully conducted! Glory to God! This will be one of my favorite "Messiahs".
This is the most memorable Messiah I have ever heard, and I have heard many, both live and recorded, over the past fifty-odd years. Barnaby Smith's conducting is nothing short of extraordinary; right at the beginning, his Comfort Ye is revelatory - Smith, more than any other conductor I have ever heard - educes the atmospherics of Comfort in the listener, complemented perfectly by his young tenor soloist, whose phrasing and ornamentation are mesmerizing. The listener's hope that what follows will indeed be a special performance is completely fulfilled. The smallish chorus and period-instrument ensemble (is this the latest iteration of Hogwood's AAM, established in the 1970s?) are perfectly balanced, play and sing beautifully, and the clarity of the chorus's enunciation cannot be praised highly enough. The soloists ornament confidently, as befits the performance style of Händel's time, and their sparing use of vibrato matches the playing of the strings, a welcome exception to what one usually encounters even in performances where period instruments are used. While a few - certainly not all - of the soloists have arguably been bettered in the many recordings of this work issued over the past thirty or so years (I'm excluding the recordings using modern instruments, and those not historically informed), the overall experience of this performance as a musical event places this Messiah at the top of my list - a remarkable endorsement, given the dozens of recorded Messiahs that I have listened to, in whole or in part, during my long life.
I have no ear for music and cannot sing, but this brings tears to my eyes. Why do we take to the streets and threaten each other with guns when there is music like this to feed our souls?
Listening now and I concur. What a lovely version. So thankful we can listen on a grey Sunday afternoon. Next year, I just may go to numerous performances to make up for the loss this year. Stay safe everyone!
Terrific performance from all soloists and chorus. Let's not forget the sound engineers - they have got the balance dead right - a truly memorable piece of work.
@@rattywoof5259 maybe Cheetah May misunderstood the word "Terrific" - or another comment. That's all I can imagine!! Difficult to know who they are even replying to.
I have loved the HIP performances of Messiah for over 50 years, since first hearing Davis' breakthrough performance, www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000416H/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&psc=1&fpw=alm while strolling thru Korvette's record department one day in Dec 1967. Admittedly it is a tad antiquated today, but at the time it was heart-stoppingly fresh and "original." Froze me in my tracks. I've given it to many who never heard anything but Mormon Tabernacle Choir-type renditions. Which is preferred seems to have something to do with the first version that captured your emotions. Some of them never warm to the HIP versions, which is a shame because they are so beautiful and allow the music to breathe anew. However, what is important is that they hear the work regardless of whose version they hear.
There could be other reasons besides a general disdain of classical music. For example, much of the work was skipped (which is not unusual, I know), or maybe they didn't agree with some of the tempi (I thought some were too fast myself). Why would someone who doesn't appreciate good classical music come to this video and down-vote it?
@@shumandaniele Some people who love classical just don't like the OI or HIP versions. Many don't like the tempi, think it's too fast and disrespectful to this "monument" of Western Culture.
This is without a doubt the 'finest overall version' of the Messiah I have ever heard. The amazing orchestra with actual instruments of the Baroque era, the powerfully accurate and perfectly sized choir and array of amply accomplished and 'articulate' vocalists/soloists, as well as the amazingly talented conductor/director...it has it all. This is an absolutely 'stunning' performance, and I never get tired of listening to it when I need a major musical 'pick-me-up.' Thank you AAM & VOCES8...and BRAVO a hundred-fold!
There is no shortage of Handel Messiah renditions out there, but this, by far is the one I can hear every word, and savor each chord. I can only hope that the angels in heaven will sing like this!
Haha, only we sing! They praise, but they don't sing! I can't find anywhere in the Bible where they actually sing. They praise, play instruments... But only WE sing! 😄🎶
The choir size is perfect for this kind of project. The 4 parts are easily identfiable and well balanced. I like the way they arrrange for various soloists to sing the arias. This a an element of variety, diversity and flavour. Messiah is a timeless and ageless high qualtiy work by Handel. In all fairness, it is the work of God!
Mr. Kwan, thank you for your detailed explanation. As someone with minimal voice training, I hadn't seen the various soloists " pulled" from the chorus group to sing these very beautiful parts. Every performance I have attended always had had 4 soloists, seated in front of the orchestra, who would stand when their part was to be sung. I have learned a great deal from you and all of the other professionals who have given such detailed explanations on this performance, which I only started listening to a short time ago. It truly is the Lord's Work! Many thanks!
Each Christmas morning for the last four years I have risen before daylight to begin celebrating my Savior's birth by watching Handel''s Messiah. This is the first year that we have no Xmas decoration and no pile of gifts nor a tree to put gifts under. This tribute to Messiah has more than saved Christmas...
A hurricane is threatening my home tonight, and yet I the wonderful offering of praise and thanksgiving, I am transported beyong all fear and anxiety. All of you who participated in this performance will never comprehend what a great gift of goodness you have brought to countless souls. This is an act of worship that elevates the soul of the earth and advances cosmic evolution.
What a magnificent production of certainly one of the greatest choral compositions of human history. The more I listen to it, the more I see the glory it gives to Christ our Lord and Saviour and the Holy Ghost. Many thanks!
Yes, this aria, and that line, have always given me chills along the spine, and never more so than in this stunning performance. I'm 77, have sung and heard it all over the years, and am bowled over by this spare, crystal-clear, polished and heartfelt version. God's in His heaven.

In total agreement with you Jim, the music just glows, almost seems to breathe. Hope Handel is listening! I would like to think this has his complete approval.
I had the same experience! But in my apartment, alone with God. The Holy Spirit came through the music and touched my heart in a way that made me so happy I wept!
Absolutely beautiful and glorious. I was used to hearing the New Messiah for decades. But always reluctant to listen to the proper original as it was maybe lengthy and too high brow for me. Mistake. And with no frantic clapping and howling after each part, it is so nice to be able to focus on the music solely & on my Lord entirely. Thank you so very much, I am so grateful to come upon this. ✡️🇮🇱✝️🇨🇦🇻🇦🏴💪🔥🙏⚔️
I agree, in a wonderful overall production that is a highlight. I also thought the trumpet player playing a period instrument was exceptional on "A Trumpet Shall Sound."
This performance is very alive, so bright and finished yet it arrives naturally and unforced. Some of the movements are a tad quick in pace, but there's no lag, everyone's keeping up. The engineering is also top notch, whoever was at the knobs and dials did a brilliant take. Lovely, just lovely.
So familiar and yet so fresh. I was fortunate indeed to come across this live recording from Trinity College, Cambridge, and view it as a marvellous early Christmas present: thank you Barnaby Smith, Voces8 and the Academy of Ancient Music. As noted elsewhere, such clear diction - the clearest I have ever heard - and yet not impeding the brilliant performance and the wonderful transmission of pathos.
This one and half hour of presentation must have taken them more than hundreds of hours of practice. Thank you all for Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.
I am a Jew, but I admire the classic European culture. Handel's oratorios are the pearl of Judeo-Christian civilization. Long live Europe and all Western culture!
This is much more Jewish that people want to admit. Most of the arias in Handel's Messiah are straight out of the Jewish Old Testament. Hopefully one day, the Christians understand the real meaning of these Jewish prophecies.
"Comfort Ye My People (Blake Morgan, tenor)" was so wonderful, full of comfort and tenderness. Especially The beginning "Comfort Ye" made me realize that this is the theme of the Messiah (my personal interpretation). I was also impressed by the alto soloist(Katie Jeffries-Harris)! Her way of singing, especially "O Thou That Tellest Good Tidings To Zion" directly conveyed the message to us, "Let's stand together!" and it lifted my spirits. I'm so sorry I didn't get to hear her "He was despised"... The overall tempo was fast, and there were some parts that felt a bit dizzying, but I think it was a well-coordinated and wonderful performance! "Amen", which tends to be messy and noisy when done poorly, had a clean, yet profound performance that showed the skill of the conductor in bringing the chorus and orchestra together. Thank you very much for giving us a wonderful Messiah!
I endorse all that has been said in praise of this performance, adding only that the diction is incomparably clear. Thank you, Lady and Gentleman performers and Conductor!
A spare, crystal-clear jewel of this great work - the best I've heard in 77 years. The young tenor who sang the first recitative "Comfort ye" was exceptional, and set the tone and standard for all that was to follow. Thank you sincerely for posting this timeless masterpiece.
Hmm, I thought his performance was underwhelming. Although he enunciates his words really clearly, his timbre lacks brightness and power. He sounds overly saccharine. His embellishments sound awkward as well.
I decided to spend time with God early yesterday morning listening to Handel's Messiah. I didn't listen to my usual version but this one got my attention. The diction, rotation of soloists, all of whom were excellent, and more ancient instruments were wonderful. God spoke to me anew through these familiar words and music. I am looking forward to making this a regular experience!
Exquisite performance! And I have heard many of Handel's Messiah in my 71 years. The key here is the youth of the performers and singers, and the aim at perfection.
the coloratura in each solo is the best I have ever had the pleasure to hear! Thanks to the composer who encouraged his singers to add artistry to the solos. These were superbly designed and impeccably delivered. This shows what can happen when a composer values the talent before him and invites them to enhance his work with something that makes it new every time. The larger choir also put real emotion into every phrase. A singer can be satisfied with getting the notes right and render a sterile performance that lacks passion. This was the best recorded performance of this work I ever had the pleasure to enjoy, it was worship, passionate communication, it enriched my soul, and my appreciation for this music. Though familiar from hearing it so often, this sounded like something new, due to the excellence and artistry put into this by musicians and voices and the director. Merry Christmas! Thank you all!
A magnificent performane! Beautiful singing by the soloists and choristers alike. One of the best performanes of this work that I have heard in recent times

I’ve played this maybe 20 times over the years (violin 1, 2, viola - amateur level). This is the best recording I’ve encountered. The orchestra is marvellous - so unfussy, and not taking attention away from the singing. The soloists are outstanding. Speechless. I had to count the number of choristers several times - 24 ?!!?!? Just amazing! Thanks to all. Blessings to all, during covid Christmas 2020. And HE SHALL REIGN FOREVER and EVER. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Like you, I found myself counting a couple of times - and so grateful to have found a performance that b e n e f i t s from the smaller number of voices. Such clean articulation, every syllable distinct, every phrase heard so precisely - unlike in cases where the audience is expected to feel more sumptuously blessed with the program telling them they're hearing 120 or so voices, which is not uncommon in college towns where I've lived. Thank God for conductor Barnaby Smith and his magnificent selection of extremely refined voices for Mr Handel's greatest opus bar none. Thanks all, John Taylor
Precise direction, balance in tones and volume, musical artistry at its finest - as a 72 year old who has sung both soprano and alto over the years, I am grateful and blessed to hear this recording. So perfect in authenticity, the classical instrumentation caught with bright, clean precision and the voice clarity, demonstrated exquisite recording quality as if I was there. Yes, To God Be the Glory!
This is truly a remarkable performance and recording of Handel’s Messiah. The musicianship by all is superb. The performances have a buoyancy that I have never heard before in other performances that I have seen and heard. As one who sang in choirs in college and in churches and who was a choir director in several Episcopal churches until I was 40, I know the tenor parts of most of the choruses by heart. Each vocal and instrumental phrase is constructed with great care, and the choir’s entrances and releases are so in sync that they sound as if soloists are singing - one on each part. The same holds true with the orchestra. Barnaby Smith does a great job of making everything that I have described happen, and the balance between orchestra, soloists, and choir is perfect. Thank you for this amazing feast!
If you want to hear a 'bigger' version with a full orchestra and many more voices I wholeheartedly recommend the following: ruclips.net/video/2-QV_I-xseA/видео.html
Began listening to a grander production that sounded rote, cardboard, and switched. This is a simply gorgeous, intimate rendering in all respects. Thanks for this!
If you haven't heard it I also recommend listening to the following:

What a beautiful opening tenor - so clear and pure a tone.
He wiggled around far too much. That much flamoyance for a baroque-era piece in the opening thirty seconds of singing is absolutely ridiculous and a total turnoff.

you still may heare it many times more, is my belief. It is heavenly, angelic, moving, especially for an old and spiritual man.

Clear, bright and singing from the depth of the heart
Having sung this as a young adult, I've had a very difficult time finding one that I like listening to....until now! I listen to this almost every day with my kids while we're home schooling!! Last night, I pulled out my score, and my 8 year old was able to look at the words so she could sing along with all the songs. I explained to her about the tradition of standing for the Hallelujah, so I went back to it to show her, and discovered, to my amazement, that the audience didn't stand in this performance!!! This is baffling to me, as it's such an automatic response for me every time I've been to a performance of Messiah!
Yes, I noticed that - actually rewound to check! It's a lovely tradition and makes me feel involved somehow, hope it doesn't disappear
Yes very insulting
Guess they didn’t get the memo. Maybe next time it will be included in the program .
It is likely they were asked to remain seated for the sake of preventing extraneous noise during this recording.

A captivating and enticing Messiah. Clean, clear voices; delightful orchestra. Although The Messiah was composed in 1741, the soloists are reading their scores from an iPad, that's 279 years later. This gorgeous, uplifting music transcends generations, change, evolution. May it continue to inspire us every Christmas. God Bless.
LOL, I've always thought of it as an Easter piece! I've sung parts as did my mother.
Just as well the IPad battery held up!
What are you talking about LOL- they are reading from paper

The King of kings and Lord of lords shall reign forever from the beginning to forever!
Amen!

Those who thumb down are really ignorant of good quality music. This is real quality classical music of over
300 years.
@@EElgar1857 And with very large choirs, the typical way to perform this. My understanding is that this piece was written for a chorus just this size.

2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
Job 19:25-27
25 For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:
26 And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:
27 Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.”
Ephesians 3:9-21
And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:
10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,
11 According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:
12 In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.
13 Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.
14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,
16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;
17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,
18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;
19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end.”
1 Corinthians 2:9-10
“But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.”
One honorable mention, the Base Soloist can reach the upper levels of international fame with his gift of mega talent if he so chooses... A talent to watch for in the future... Amazing!
Almost like hearing Messiah for the first time. Just.Wow.
@@autodidact2499 You’re right. Thanks for the morning uplift.
In total agreement with you Jim, the music just glows, almost seems to breathe. Hope Handel is listening! I would like to think this has his complete approval.
My friends took me to live show last year. The minute it started I was in tears, I love it so. I was drunk on the Holy Spirit in the way out
The Holy Spirit takes us aback as He peleases ! Yeah ,Bro
I had the same experience! But in my apartment, alone with God. The Holy Spirit came through the music and touched my heart in a way that made me so happy I wept!
i was feeling low, but found this version of MESSIAH .by luck now i feel on top of the world .it has been a wonderful experience, thank you so much .
I have learned to turn to this piece of artistry when I feel down!! I feel like my soul rising above myself!! Heavenly music indeed!
I am in tears
Probably the most darling, sweet and caring rendition of "Comfort Ye My People". It was truly remarkable. Thank you so very much!
I agree absolutely
I agree, in a wonderful overall production that is a highlight. I also thought the trumpet player playing a period instrument was exceptional on "A Trumpet Shall Sound."
Couldn't agree more!
Yes. I was completely TRANSFIXED. Just beyond tender and loving and holy.
that's right!
His song is exquisite, full of comfort and kindness.
Amen to that!🛐
So familiar and yet so fresh.
Forget Jesus .
@@johnnywhite58,
I rather forget who ?
You, of course !😈
Watching with tears streaming down my face.
Me too.
We are ...,HIS people ...Speaking to Souls
I am a Jew, but I admire the classic European culture. Handel's oratorios are the pearl of Judeo-Christian civilization.
Long live Europe and all Western culture!
This is much more Jewish that people want to admit. Most of the arias in Handel's Messiah are straight out of the Jewish Old Testament. Hopefully one day, the Christians understand the real meaning of these Jewish prophecies.
@@deuteronsmith9032 But the Old Testament is Christian as well
Unfortunately it’s being subverted. May it be strong enough to withstand.
Jews can't stand european culture and they don't like christianity...sorry but this is the truth.

Blessing and honor and glory and power be unto Him FOREVER! Amen 🤗🙇♀️❤️🙏🏻❣️Yeees.
Amen to that!
Maravillosa obra y bellísima ejecución de todos los participantes.
Bravissimo to the conductor, chorus, soloists, and orchestra. A superb performance all the way round.
Wonderful performance! Light and delicate. No mob scene. Period instruments. Perfect!
This is full of sublime, solemnity and tranquility
The diversity of Handel is amazing, and immeasurable
A spare, crystal-clear jewel of this great work - the best I've heard in 77 years. The young tenor who sang the first recitative "Comfort ye" was exceptional, and set the tone and standard for all that was to follow. Thank you sincerely for posting this timeless masterpiece.
Hmm, I thought his performance was underwhelming. Although he enunciates his words really clearly, his timbre lacks brightness and power. He sounds overly saccharine. His embellishments sound awkward as well.
Its superb, thank you so very much.❤
I decided to spend time with God early yesterday morning listening to Handel's Messiah.
Listening to this on Christmas Day 2021! Praise His Holy Name!!
This was one of the most moving Messiahs I have heard
Guessing I am not the only one in tears. Glory be to God!
Phenomenal Articulation From A Virtuoso Chorale, and Chamber Orchestra !!....A Purist Dream Come True !!!.....I Have Just Discovered My New Favorite Messiah 😍!!!!!.....
Agreed- but for a vigerous version, try that by the Gramaphone Chorus of Ghana; a well cordinated choir ( even to the women's earings !), who are obviously enjoying themselves
@@gavinpatience8897 Their Sound is Very Rich , And Full Indeed , With Their Christian Joy Being Quite Evident !!! I'm Sure Handel ( Who was Known For Loving Big Sound , Especially when it Came to Grand Events Like Coronations , Royal Fireworks, Etcetera, would Have Loved the Brilliant Spot On Arrangements For Synthesizer That The Gramaphone Chorus Uses !!!
I’ve played this maybe 20 times over the years (violin 1, 2, viola - amateur level). This is the best recording I’ve encountered. The orchestra is marvellous - so unfussy, and not taking attention away from the singing. The soloists are outstanding. I’ve listened to this around 50 times over the last fortnight - good music to have on in these homeworking days. Bravo to all involved.
From New York, my church Trinity Wall Street gave the first performance of Messiab in NY. And always gets raves as the "best" Messiah in NYC. However, this performance is the ultimate, is perfection in evert aspect. Sublime, and will rewatch. So lucky to have found this!!!
First time I really enjoyed & understood better the whole Handel’s masterpiece. I found the singers are amazing in their performance. Thank you & bravo !!!!!!!!
What a wonderful piece of music that thousands of third and adored through the ages. I sometimes wonder how many people have come to know the Messiah - the Lord Jesus Christ - through hearing the words of this beautiful piece of music from the holy Bible! Thank you for posting this - Bill - UK
I'm glad to see young generation people sing choir singing handel's messiah, it was beautiful perfect music
Full credit to VOCES8 and Apollo5!

Fantastic performance and message. Prophet Isaiah must excited about the way this message runs into our hearts through this kind of performance.
I am searching for words to describe this. I think 'Heavenly' will do nicely 😊
Praise God !
"Comforted his people"....Wow, May the Lord comfort your people as you promised. Amen.
The best performance of Messiah on RUclips, hands down.
If you want to hear a 'bigger' version with a full orchestra and many more voices I wholeheartedly recommend the following:

Began listening to a grander production that sounded rote, cardboard, and switched. This is a simply gorgeous, intimate rendering in all respects. Thanks for this!
Best rendition I’ve ever heard. Clear and precise choir, clean and projecting soloists, and wonderful orchestra. Just like angels descended.
