  • Dame Elisabeth Schwarzkopf.Operatic and lieder soprano.1915-2006. One of the Greats of the 20th Century.
Short quote from her Obituary in The Gramophone Magazine:
.".....Along with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Schwarzkopf spearheaded a new approach to Lieder interpretation, placing great emphasis on the text but balancing it with shading of greatly subtlety. She formed part of an unofficial ‘company’ of singers who recorded extensively in the early years of the LP and stereo.
Her recordings were invariably produced by her husband Walter Legge, and many of them are considered classics: the Mozart Da Ponte operas, Richard Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier, Ariadne auf Naxos and Capriccio as well as his Four Last Songs, and numerous discs of Lieder by Schubert and Hugo Wolf....."

Thank you for posting this, my friend from the east. My understanding is that her husband chose the records. Hope you and yours are surviving the covid outbreak. Thank heavens for music and those we love. Much love from J from the west.

A treasure! Btw, it was her husband, music producer Walter Legge, who told Elisabeth to choose her personal favorites from her own recordings they had made together at EMI, as though cherished mementos from a personal scrapbook. And, as always, she followed his direction and was afterwards unfairly criticized for being ‘egotistical’ in choosing her own records to play on that desert island. But her selections are as impeccable as her reasons. She never, ever listened to her own records for pleasure (but mercilessly critiqued herself when I played some for her). Thank God she made an exception for the BBC audience, and that these charming moments have been retrieved.

ES has been criticized for choosing her own discs for this broadcast and this is the first time I have heard it and her "reason" for choosing her own discs which I find valid and reasonable although I would be interested in knowing other singers she would have chosen. A great artist a great singer and I feel very lucky to hear her in all her southern California performances. All treasurable.

Many thanks davy91101. Yes,it all makes perfect sense choosing her own recordings in order to recall her time before the Desert Island. I would have probably done the same. :)

Somehow I wasn't suprised she picked her own records. For whatever reason. She may have misunderstood the show? Or maybe it seemed in keeping with my perception of her personality.

THE ONE AND THE GREATEST in the 20th century. She formed new post-war school of singing, and she still the best female performer of Schubert and Schumann Lieder
