Sailor Moon and DBZ. I remember I had to explain to my aunt why the Sailor Moon transformation sequence wasn't adult content lmao. She was old school Catholic and threatened to tell my mom. I had to beg my way out of it and could never watch Toonami after that in the living room. I'd have to sneak off into my room and pretend to "study" with the volume real low to watch it! Sailor Moon still my shit and DBZ the goat ofc.

Most guys watched Sailor Moon back in the 90s. Lets face it those were the dark ages before streaming existed and if your family had internet is was 56K on a PC that was used by everyone. Sailor Moon was among the best spank bait a teen could find without being home alone for a few hours so you could sneak into where an older relative kept their stash of physical media porn.

Then 9/11 happened, and the couple of following episodes I saw before enlisting in the military hit me so much harder than any anime since largely because of the time period.

I always find it curious and a little weird watching the perceptions and recollections of people who grew up with Toonami as their first experience with anime. As mine predates the block. I mean I WATCHED the block on CN, but my original exposure to anime came first... in the form of Speed Racer and Voltron re-runs and with the first show that changed my outlook on animated media on television: Robotech. Or as i'd later come to know it: Macross.
Those were the first shows I ever saw before knowing what anime was. The first anime I ever watched specifically knowing what anime was and seeking it out, were VHS tapes of Ranma 1/2, and Project A-Ko. It's those series that first introduced me to this "strange form of animation that resembled all the Nintendo and Super Nintendo video games" that I grew up with. Also seeing various anime advertised in the back of various gaming magazines as well, intrigued me more.
By the time of Toonami, I already knew what all this stuff was, and was just hungry for more, so I gladly took it. But it's still surreal to me seeing so many people who only saw this first.

I don't watch subs so one of the things I love is how certain companies like Viz and Aniplex have been able to get dubs for their respective shows out much quicker than they usually would. I was SHOCKED when Promised Neverland started airing literally 2 weeks after the sub had finished. Now I'm watching and enjoying the hell out of Demon Slayer. I also love that it's given me the opportunity to rewatch and get back into Food Wars which has been something I've wanted to do for a while since it's been such a long wait between Season 2 and 3's dubs. Here's hoping the dub for Season 3 starts on Toonami right after Season 2

My first anime was the late 70s early 80s series “Force Five” which apparently was only shown here in New England (which you skipped in your short history of anime in America) which started a love for anime that exists to this day nearly 40 years later

Down in south america (i'm from peru) we had toonami as part of cartoon network (not sure if it was the same in the states) and i still remember being AMAZED with Gundam Wing (just watched it for the third time a couple of months ago) and specifically remember wanting to watch Red Baron but my parents wouldn't allow cause it was on Locomotion (an "adults" channel). Shaman King on Fox Kids was another one i recently watched again (would very much appreciate a video explaining what the hell happened in the end, can't find any information in english and the new mangas are only in japanese from what i found). Thanks for the great video

Been around since the start with Toonami with moltar in 1997, here we are in the present day with Netflix, HULU, Crunchyroll and HIDIVE. Now I can watch these classics in Funimation NOW like DBZ, Outlaw Star, Tenchi Muyo!, Yu Yu Hakusho or late night Adult Swim from 2001 to 2006 like Cowboy bebop, Samurai Champloo and Eureka 7, have these shows on DVD and Blu Ray now. Happy I was growing up being there since the start. And the time Adult Swim did that April Fools in 2012 being that ONE NIGHT ONLY Being a Kid again. It will be part of me for the Rest of my Life. Awesome Review

toonami was my only outlet during my childhood. i remember staying up waaaaay past my bed time to watch anime, shows i oddly related to at the time....since nothing screamed "childhood" like sword fights and blood.

I would run home from middle school to sit in front of my tv and watch the classic anime shows. As much as my parents saying that violent shows makes me violent, I still watch all the shows!

I started watching Toonami back in the Moltar days. Good ol days. Toonami's prime was during my middle school and early high school days. Now 32 married and mortgage. How times change.

Starblazers was my introduction to anime, later I'd find myself watching Speedracer and then Voltron, Robotech, and then I moved on to fansubs... to a lesser extent there was also the realization that shows produced by DIC who was a french company producing cartoons for the US market had all their stuff animated by the Japanese, which kinda paved the way for Mighty Orbots and other Japanese anime style animation direction/production even before toonami.

You know when you think about it in the grand scheme of things, if Toonami hadn't existed exactly when it did, it wouldn't have had nearly as much of an impact.
It was just at the time when traditional media was fairly diverse but still somewhat centrailized (not literally thousands of channels but basic cable had a few dozen), and new media wasn't yet a norm, especially for younger people.
If it were any earlier, it never would have made it to air, and if it were much later it either would've had a substantially smaller audience or just died.
Of course, that's exactly what started happening around 2007 when the internet was really started to break ground as a media outlet.

Many have talked about how 4Kids introduced Japanese anime to a whole generation (or more), but it was truly Toonami that did that work, and they did it better.

I remember watching the Astro boy remake 50 times when I was super little, and I just started watching it again on Netflix a minute ago because I was reminded of the fond memories I had when I was little of watching the movie , and the intro music is so eerily familiar after 20 ish years.

Toonami was so important. At some point though yall need to speak on the various Toku series, how the westernized Power Rangers; its originator Super Sentai, and similar shows had an effect on anime viewership in America.

I used to stay up late to watch Outlaw star and then, after midnight, hope to catch one of those insanely violent movies they would sometimes air (in the UK they did this, I don't know about the US). One night I got the double hit of AD Police: The Man Who Bites His Tongue, and then Genocyber. I have, no joke, talked to my therapist as an adult about these animes because of how much fear, dread, and full body anxiety they plagued me with...ah, memories.

I'm British (and old) so didn't have this, but I found my way to the Anime promised land through films like Akira (on VHS in Japanese with English subtitles and a making of in a double boxed set import) and SyFy/fantasy RPGs + groups like Gorillas and 90 Japanese city pop electro. So I welcome you all my brother's and sisters!
