I grew up watching it on Saturdays with Moltar and loved when it ran during the week. I use to do my homework early and run home to make sure I could watch it without interruption. Also, I loved Tom introducing the audience to new ideas and philosophy. The show definitely changed my life for the better. If I could say anything to the creators is thank you so much for introducing us to new ideas.
I was so surprised when anime became mainstream in the States. When I was a young kid, I was fascinated by it but lamented how difficult it was to come by, not least of which was because I was still so young. When it became suddenly viable, with full series on cable and manga in the bookstores, I was really amazed that it was so commonly available, considering how expensive and rare it had been previously. By the time I came back from studying abroad in Japan, it was so ubiquitous and everyone seemed to be equating anime to Japanese culture. I think this is common with media, though, because people I met in Japan and abroad elsewhere equated North American culture with Hollywood and sitcoms. Fun retrospective. Toonami really was super influential in general culture, I think. Without Toomami, the concept of "Cool Japan" couldn't have happened in the US.
I got Cable in the 2000's so the shows I watched on Toonami were DBZ, Transformers Armada, G Gundam, Zoids, Big O, Yu Yu Hakusho, Batman Beyond, He Man, Zatch Bell, Megas XLR, Tenchi Muyo, and Ronin Warriors.
Ill always remember toonami from when i was a kid the only show that i really really wanting to watch was Dragon ball z anytime it came on i just sat there and i watched it with my eyes glued to the screen because i didn't wanna miss anything obviously the internet and streaming services have made it easier to watch but i still remember those memories
Toonami isn't a distant memory. It's the single factor that brought anime to North America and then the rest of the world, and is going strong to this day
Adult Swim and Toonami alas.... Loved many shows but once they started shoving male audience anime and having it dominate the line up with few geared towards us ladies I walked away. Originals like Shaman King in the original adaptation was and still is like Rurouni Kenshin amd others geared towards not just male audience was amazing and what the 90's kids like myself grew up with and loved watching....that is till Netflix and others readapted and ruined it and changed the voice overs that didn't fit nor work with the character and was total turn off destroying a once loved anime. There were other Anime a diamond in the rough so to speak that didn't get a chanceand were truly loved by many , but never got the chance to have the seasons or all episodes air on Adult Swim, Toonami or Fox Box like The Laws of Ueki, Soul Hunter, Ruroni Kenshin, KIBA, Rave Master, Escaflowne, Blue Seed, Record Lodus Wars, Nightwalker: The Midnight Detective, Yohko Mono Devil Hunter, Fushigi Yuggi, Haruka Beyond Streams of Time, Hirro no Kakera, Hanasakeru Seishounen, Shugo Chara, Karen Chibi Vampire, Saiunkoku Monogatari, Ray Earth, The Third: The Girl with the Blue Eye, Winx Club and I mean the original series, while British Tv kept true and didn't cut the epsiodes down and showed it all the way through. Like many other Anime geared towards female audiences this was cut down and mucj from epsiodes missing just so the male dominated animes were given more platform. And yet these were also was ol' school but they either only showed an epsiode or few then left us hanging and so you had to find the Anime in DVD later to watch these amazing ol' school Anime the entire series were shortend or a few episodes played, but they were never as a diamond in the rough given a fair shake, and unfortunately much was being pushed in belief it was better at the time to gear towards male audiences and then a male and female audience as they did not get the big picture that females were also as well as much a big audience for watching anime mornings, days and nights. And unfortunately the broadcast didn't pay attention and pick up on that so they lost much of the audience once they reduced Anime that was geared for male and female audiences as they were not giving a fair chance to push Anime for female audiences as much as they were investing in the male audience and is part of the downfall.
I think Toonami is remembered much more popularly than you realize

Yes; Toonami was legit when it premiered on March 17,1997. Shows like Thundercats, Voltron, Sailor Moon, Dragonball Z, ZOIDS, etc
Toonami single handedly made anime mainstream in the US. It wasn't just a program block, it was an event.
