98 to 2001 were my childhood watching Dbz, Reeboot, Sailor Moon, Gundam Wing to Outlaw Star and Cowboy Beebop
The absolute classics! What a time to be alive. I look back on those years with such fondness
I miss Steve Blum & Peter Cullen doing the promos and stuff for Toonami
Blum still voices TOM and does some promos
Yea Steve is still around, it’s crazy just how iconic that voice is. Even crazier to think about just how instrumental he and that block of tv programming was to so many of us, me included
Anime started kicking ass with imported films like Akira, Fist of the North Star but, you damn right bro! Dragon Ball Z really kicked anime off into the mainstream.
DBZ hit different, I’ve told this one before but I think it speaks for how popular DBZ was and is. When I was in 4th grade we would trade photos of DBZ characters we printed when we got on the internet at school. It was like an updated basketball card. It was also our currency in class
@@WhatsInMyHeadPodcast I was eighteen years old and in college when I first saw it back in '93. My cousin introduced me to it. He was an anime super freak. We would go to Canal street and pick up the original Japanese versions on black market VHS tapes. It was the only way you could watch it back then. The only incarnation that was available to watch in the states was the original Dragon ball. Bro. The first time I watched DBZ. I thought my head was gonna explode. I had never seen anything like it.
The master of air waves and the bridge between worlds. Toonami was great.
Beautiful put!
BR8NG BACK TOONAMI
Toonami Glory Days. The daytime run was good but the midnight run was where to go for anime. Before streaming came into existence Toonami was where you found anime. Yes if you were lucky you may have found a couple of anime on video store shelves but that was it.
Can’t agree more! If Toonami doesn’t hit when it hits, I’m curious if we have anime the way we do.
This is so dope! Toonami helped mold me into the proud nerd i am today! "Old memories seldom fade and bad habits die hard"- Peter Cullen kenshin promo
Beautifully put and I’m glad this could spark a little nostalgia
@@WhatsInMyHeadPodcast overwhelming nostalgia 🤣
TOM & SARA: The two who brought the Anime and Western action cartoons together.
Ps, There was a *3rd* action block on Cartoon Network. It was created in 1996.
It was called the *Power Zone!*
It was where Speed Racer made his Cartoon Network debut.
Oh shit! I didn’t know about Power Zone, thank you for dropping that nugget of knowledge, going to have to do some reading.
Hope you enjoyed the video we did, we got a Ed, Edd n Eddy one coming soon.
@@WhatsInMyHeadPodcast looking forward to it. It's only natural that you forgot about it. Other than G-Force, Speed Racer & Superfriends, it wasn't all that different from Afternoon Adventures.
Thank you so much for doing this video! Toonami has so many memories for me and my bro. I remember us rushing home so we wouldn't miss Toonami, especially when DBZ was on lol.
If you can, I would love to see more Toonami videos!
Will have one more on Toonami some time down the road. Will cover the second half of its run and the reboot.
I myself toonami faithful I spread the word every Saturday night / Sunday morning to all my friends to watch toonami❤
Nice! I hope you enjoyed the video we put together
I just got back from watching compilations of the Tom adventure shorts and while I never got the chance to tune on the selection of anime on toonami, I actually like Tom and the struggles he's got to deal with while being a tv block host.
It was a great time to be a kid during this era
Personally I kind of started as a kid loving anime but was then drawn more to slapstick cartoons, most from the 40's, a few from the 90's, and one from the early 2000's, as I entered my 20's.
Right on! I like a lot of different eras but I love the 90s and early 00s for cartoons. I hope you enjoyed the retrospective we did
Great job, man,. Very well written and researched; puts everything into perspective. I like how you even mentioned the neglected Super Adventures era. -- A.T.
Why thank you and I’m glad you enjoyed it! It was a real blast going back and researching this one. SO many things came up and either I didn’t know they happened or I didn’t remember. I wish we could have done a long er video but that will come down the road with these retrospectives. We are keeping the scripts, edits and videos as tight as possible until we find a format and flow that we like.
Larry crushed it tho! He keeps upping his game and leveling up with each video he does.
Thanks again for watching!
Best memories
I hope you enjoyed this one and I hope you’ll check out some of our other stuff. Thank my you for spending a little time on our channel today
Steve Blum is awesome voice actor i love him he's is awesome 👍😎 with deep voice 💖😍 I love so much 😍💕💕👄💕👄🤩😁
Now we're talking. I grew up on that early Super Adventures block.
That’s something that I loved going back during the info gathering of this to learn about. It’s crazy the stuff that you think you know, until you start deep diving and finding out you don’t know shit 😂 I’ve had a blast finding “new” things about the channel I grew up with.
@@WhatsInMyHeadPodcast I was there from it's inception J. So, I can say without a shadow of a doubt. You knocked it outta' the park.
Thanks man! I appreciate that, Larry did one HELL of a job video editing this one up. Just between the two we’ve done, he’s gotten a lot better
Thunder the Barbarian, Herculoids, and the original Fantastic Four was the shit!
Thundarr, the Herculoids and Frankenstein JR has a super special place in my heart
They should just bring back Toonami on RUclips, or some streaming platform. And any new promos have steve or Peter do a few narrations. All of us that grew up with it would have a way to introduce it to younger kids of this generation
I can get behind that. I have a feeling it’s not far off, especially with Adult Swim doing the Checkered Past time slots now.
I hope you enjoyed this retrospective
The first version of Tom always has me thinking about my grandparents spending nights at the end of a school week some reason when I see original Tom I think of the old Japanese fishing sign that my grandfather had hung above the TV
I always felt like that first version of Tom was voiced by one of my favorite anime dwarf punching bag from Dragon Ball and DBZ
Well he was Krillins voice actor for sure! Piccolo is my favorite character in the DBZ lore but Krillin has a special place in my heart.
Amazing!
I was into anime before Toonami showed up Toonami definitely made me like anime way more
Toonami helped me find out what anime was. I was a youngin when it hit and DBZ was my world when that started airing. It absolutely took over my school.
I hope you enjoyed the retrospective we did and I hope you’ll continue to check out more of our content
Same here. I started watching anime on television back in September 11, 1995 when Sailor Moon was first premiered on US television syndication when I was a toddler. This was around when I was in preschool just 4 years before I started watching Toonami on Cartoon Network in spring 1999 during my childhood years while I was in 2nd grade back then.
An entertainment host that actually gets killed off in story? The hosts in MST3000 only escaped while ditching their robot companions.
Now Toonami is on adultswim
Gun Dam Wing! Too Damn Tough!
That’s one I need to go back and watch. I was always a Voltron dude
@@WhatsInMyHeadPodcast Voltron was the joint. Gundam was more in league with Robotech. Both dope as hell.
I have most of the model kits
I miss the days when Toonami was still on Cartoon Network. I mean I know it’s on Adult Swim but still
Yea it says something for sure. It’s fun to reminisce about days long gone, when we didn’t have anything to worry about other than “I wonder what happens on the next Ep of DBZ”
I miss when Toonami was aired on weekday afternoons...sigh, those were the days.
Do you have any more entertainment history analysis videos like this?
We’ve done 3. Toonami, Space Ghost Coast to Coast and What A Cartoon.
Toonami was the bomb as a kid.
Absolutely! Couldn’t wait for it to hit when I got home as a kid
@@WhatsInMyHeadPodcast I never really liked TOM 4, though. His face looks like Thomas the Tank Engine.
😂 yea he did
It was amazing, and it was fun watching anime and western action cartoons on Toonami on Cartoon Network during my childhood years.
ever thought about getting Sean Akins on the show?
I would love to have him on. Sadly I’m not sure where to start, I think he might be on social media (maybe) and I’ve might have already reached out but haven’t heard anything back.
I got into toonami on 2001
Nice! Those were prime years. Thanks for the comment and you checking out the video. I hope you’ll continue to check out the content we’ve got up

Damn you J. There's just too much testosterone in this episode. Thanks alot. I just gained a hundred pounds of muscle and facial hair. Now. I can't zip up my pants! 😂 See you on the next one bro.
😂 thanks brother
I miss toonami
It’s still around. It was fun going back and looking at all of these moments
