  • With the "recent" blow up of the Adult Swim trend or AS trend on Tiktok obviously influenced off of Adult Swim Bumps it got me looking back nostalgically about Adult Swim how it played cartoons or adult animation that no other program would (Space Ghost Coast To Coast, Family Guy, Futurama, Robot Chicken, Rick and Morty, King of The Hill Aqua Teen Hunger Force, etc) how it was a big influence on the popularity of Anime with toonami Especially Mature anime (Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Trigun, Samurai Champloo, Big O, Death Note, etc) How it helped introduce us to amazing musical artists and underground hip hop (J dilla, Mf Doom, Killer Mike, Flying Lotus, Madlib, Nujabes, etc) which led us to lofi hip hop Adult Swim played a huge part in the shaping of my childhood but besides being such a huge influence why I think Adult Swim is so important is because it grew its own personality which made it unique to other tv channels and today I hope to show you how Adult Swim influenced so many ppl and show my love for not only this [adult swim] tiktok trend but also adult swim bumps
ps: sorry about the inconsistency in uploads been super busy with life stuff hope you understand ALMOST TO 100 SUBS! thank yall!

God dude it is insane how this video just dragged some dusty old memories to the surface after they've been lying dormant in my smooth brain for just over TWENTY YEARS!
Literally while watching this I remembered seeing Cowboy Bebop, YuYu Hakusho and Big O probably in the summer of 2000 or MAYBE 2001. To place it on a timeline these memories were from before and little while after Inuyasha first premiered on AS, which I also remember well! I kept stacks of blank or not so blank VHS tapes on hand to record the broadcasts of these shows onto and I'd watch these recorded episodes over and over again obsessively! Next time I visit my old hometown I'm gonna dig through some boxes at my mom's and see if I can find any of these tapes. It'd be great to see a piece of exactly what I experienced as I was essentially unwittingly being introduced to subculture and the wider world of art. Those late nights were like a world of their own with a feeling that's hard to describe. I'm genuinely glad you made this video dude!

Okay so I took a few trips out to my mom's place and searched everywhere for those tapes.. unfortunately I was unable to find them. The only tape I found was a VHS copy of Night Of The Living Dead. I did find a few things I had forgotten about that are tangentially related like Tenchi Muyo CD's & manga and some Pokemon stuff, but that's not what I was after.
Definitely a bummer that those recordings didn't turn up but if I ever do manage to find at least one of those tapes I'll pop back up here and let you know! Cheers duder!

Honestly the only other experience I had similar to it was falling asleep late one night on a super random channel and waking up to Cirque du Soliel playing on it. And then longing to find that random unexplained circus performance fever dream again for a long time...till it happened again and I recorded it. My whole family was stunned and impressed by it. I felt like I got to expefience a magic thing before anyone else realized it's beauty and power and then it blew up so fucking hard. Because I'm sure, in the US a bunch of people also had the same experience and just enjoying the surreal storytelling and impressive feats.

Adult Swim is absolutely timeless. You could easily air reruns of the channel from the mid 2000's with no context and it would STILL hit. The jokes would hit, music would vibe, and the shows would fit right in with modern internet culture. Such a timeless vibe.

Growing up with adult swim drastically changed who I was as a person. A lot of people called me gifted or smart as a kid because I knew a lot of adult things and even had some neat little philosophical ideas, and this plus old RUclips is really the reason why, I just repeated what I heard and people thought I was a genius, kinda funny looking back.
Thank you for this amazing video that reminds me so much of my childhood.

I never had cable at my house but on weekends I’d sleep over at my friends house with cable and lord knows how late we’d stay up watching adult swim. The calm of the midnight streets mixed with trying to keep the tv volume low so we don’t get found out. Those bumps only added to the tense atmosphere as we’d sneak into the kitchen to grab a pop tart or two in between commercial breaks. I wish I got more time with adult swim but I cherish the few bits I had throughout my childhood.

Crazy how you describe adult swim. “Like your big brother” I’m the oldes one out my brothers so I didn’t have any one to learn stuff like this from so when adult sum came on after Cartoon Network I would love it bc of the beats and picture they would put and shows they had. Made me grow up n mature more bc I was learning new music. Crazy how to think about how it’s will never be the same bc every one so stuck on streaming even my self n they don’t even get to experience tv watching n catching shows at a certain time/day.

Adult swim is the reason I got into anime and it was quite literally my entire childhood just staying up late every night to watch shit like aqua teen hunger force and king of the hill and then my first ever animes which changed my life like Cowboy bebop and ghost in the shell.
It felt like a tv program that genuinely knew and understood the audience and the bumps and soundtracks from samurai champloo and FLCL and all the cool ass artists that are my favourites even to this to day (MF DOOM AND JDILLA)
Adult swim quite literally inspired my whole personality and tastes in music and media and I’ll forever me thankful to be part of that small but brutally honest and chill community growing up.
unfortunately [as] isn’t the same anymore as the the glory days that you’ve displayed in this video but the closest thing I’ve gotten to it was driving around in gta 5 vibin to the weird radio stations, it reminds me of adult swim a lot but it’s not the same.
You may have remembered me commenting on your cowboy bebop video (which was like 5 months after this one but I saw ur spike video like a year or 2 ago lmao) but I also woke up on a couch at 4am and first hand witnessed a woman shoot her boyfriend and spike just flying away in his ship, that was my firsthand experience of cowboy bebop and adult swim as a whole and it literally changed my life.
14 years later and now I’m like sitting here watching your video and ur literally speaking my mind and my past while I’m getting ready for my dead end job.

The only thing I would add is that Toonami started as a daily run on cartoon network around the time kids would be getting out of school. The only reason I watched sailor moon was because it was between Reboot and Dragon Ball Z. From 1998-2003 at the very least was the primary run through the day. vivid memory when i was 8 and told to go to bed and watch some cartoons. I was like, "These arent cartoons!" because i hated the ugly animation in Aqua Teen Hunger force. But i relented and watched anyways. Started to love that show. Had a mini existential crisis when plots got bleak in some of the anime like Cowboy Beebop and Blue something. It was the first time i was exposed to heavy subject matter in animation that wasnt just cursing and making jokes. It altered my brain chemistry or something. Made me realize that growing up doesnt mean id have to be watching live action shows like all my classmates. Now that i think of it, it was life changing for me. i really grew to love AS. And i honestly miss it. To this day, i mostly watch animated shows. I never cared for live action. I can probably count how many live action shows i enjoy on one hand. I wish i could go back in time and feel the way i felt those nights watching AS alone. It was freeing. Holy crap! I never realized how much AS meant to me. Damn.

Adult swim had such good taste in shows. Yu Yu Hakusho is my absolute all time favorite anime and it is another one that only ever played on adult swim and totally deserved more recognition, all the same I will always be thankful for adult swim for introducing a younger me to these shows. Also Futurama is sooo much better than Family Guy or any of the other "Family Guy" type shows.

I think the biggest thing is that for those who watched this…just think back to late nights, maybe summer time, just seeing stuff you never would have seen, music, art, comedy just coming all at once. Playing a show you never would have seen, heard of or watched. The variety here is amazing, it can’t be duplicated now and sure RUclips is the evolution but we didn’t have an algorithm, we just had a wild ass block of TV every night, that showed music, art, comedy, anime just..shit you didn’t know you might even like. I still recall being 14-17 just getting lit, making food and watching ATHF, then all the sudden i see TriGun with Lofi before it ‘was a thing’ with littke adverts that felt like it was saying “what the fuck you still awake for? Well..here’s something you haven’t seen”

I remember my parents letting me watch Home Movies on Adult Swim when I was in 1st grade back in 2001. At the time they understood very little about adult oriented cartoons, and it did not take my brother long to convince my mom that it was safe to watch. That said Home Movies was pretty tame compared to some other things to grace that channel. It was an exciting time for basic cable to say the least, it felt almost like getting into a private club once the clock hit the hour. I remember all of these bumps, I can't believe it's been over 20 years since I saw that original pool bump.

Someone has to help meh plsssss! There was this commercial that came on late nights and it was the first time I had ever seen the faceless tallman monster thingy. It was a cartoon like version of a woman getting ready for bed but in Dr. Seuss style narration. All I can remember is her laying in bed with the monster at the foot & the narrator says the end of the poem something like: 'And if it sits on your bed...you're dead...dead...DEAD!' Something like that then it ends there with the monster coming closer. Idk I think it was on Adult Swim & I can't find it anywhere!

Mannn it’s crazy to see everyone in the comments having the same childhood where we were all awake at 3:30am just lost watching the edgy tv shows then the weird bumps. But me personally it always creeped me out to the point where I would look around to make sure I was the only one in the room. I swear our pseudo generation of 98-04 is the best. We’re not so old where we’re outta touch and mad at the world and we’re not some young weird kids who think we have all the answers. Adult swim encompasses the feeling of being in a world that seems too big to bother so just chill and let it flow

When I was a little kid I always wanted to stay up past my bed time to watch adult swim. To pull it off I used some of my grandmas old vhs tapes and recorded over them with adult swim. I would pop it in and press record then go to sleep and watch it the next day lol. Got caught one time she wanted to watch Ms.Congeniality and then robot chicken or celebrity boxing came lol. Good times

I’m an ‘02 kid so I definitely missed this part of our culture, unfortunately. I did accidentally stumble across robot chicken when I was 5, though. The music is something I listen to today, though.

Someone should figure out how to live steam a curated block of shows every day, get the rights cleared get all these talented creators and editors to make bumps and hype reals for new and old classics, and find advertisers who were influenced by such times and shows. Dude I'd tune in to that or watch the vod every day.

Something tells me these times were so good, because we were forced to be present. No phone, no instant 5G internet….just, life.
Limits in technology made us so free…
