Got my firstt guitar when i was twelve within five weeks i could play twenty lonnie Donnigan songs and a further twenty Buddy Holly songs, All three major chords and the odd minor. Wonderful stuff it formed my teenage years.I still play and sing these songs 65 years later. We could only see him the odd time on television and we only saw Buddy Holly once on the london palladim. If you could play a guitar then you where a bit of a hero.
Anthony Donegan wasn't Irish he was Scottish born in South Glasgow. Began life playing banjo in Chris Barber's Jazz Band. They backed him on his first single for Pye records.
FFS 😱 I've known Kris and Lonnie all my days for 45 years or more and thought I'd heard every version of this song and can't believe I'm hearing this for the first time. I'm amazed and embarrassed at the same time. Lonnie does country who knew??😁
@@TVfen Well, I wrote that at 4am, so not sure if I was serious. Had not slept yet. Same as now, it's 5 am this side of the world, have to get to bed. Get some sleep.
At the start of this I saw Robin Williams being channeled and his appearance. Maybe he inspired Robin. Why not, he inspired alot of musicians might as well inspire a comedian too. PS..I have since read some of the comments and found I wasn't the only one to see Robin Williams in him. I showed my wife and she agreed.
BRAVO LONNIE - that s how it should be rendered - in the style of Gordon Lightfoot - not like Janis - she never understood the song - this is a sad song a lovely sad song almost nostalgic. Janis screwed it up.
Great to hear the songs from way back then
If only he was alive today, his music is simply brilliant. He could fill the Houston Rodeo.
Lonnie’s son is also a gifted musician! Sounds just like his dad!
Loving these rare Lonnie performances, fantastic
-covered many times but none better than this.

Thanks for this. I love this song especially the original by Kris Kristofferson. I love this version too and the country feel.
A Master at work.....very rare version! Thank you for uploading!
I really like this version
An excellent and classic theme, which has been performed by the best singers of the style, giving it their personal touch and with enormous success!
Best version of "Bobby McGee " ever.
It is a great version. But I would say that P!nk's version is a tad better ... just a tad ;-)

Lonnie Donegan had a unique voice and a great talent that many have copied but were never to be as good.

Reminds me of Robin Williams
Does anyone know the circumstances of Lonnie's death in Market Deeping? We live there now but no one seems to remember it happening?
😗🙂
Are we sure he isn't just a Robin Williams character?
Real electric guitar on back up
Written and originally done by Kris Kristofferson. And became a big hit for Janis Joplin albeit posthumously.
Great. Big loss to his field of entertainment.
He sounds alot like Robin Williams when he talks
"windscreen wipers"! awesome. he is definitely English
No he wasn't...scots/irish
English by adulthood - he even sang England's 1966 world Cup song 'World Cup Willie' (serves people right for watching too much footie)
I think he was talking about starting a coup?
ha lonnie, he had the world in his hands in the 50,s and lost it with my old man, and chewing gum and all that crap, what a shame, i know I was there.
Rubbish he went on to greater things
Wow Jimmy Fallon hasn’t changed a bit
robin Williams as a musician
Damn if he doesn't remind me of Robin Williams
I was thinking the same thing !

He spoke Austrian?
German
Except for the "Servus Schatzi", that was quite Austrian
As German as Hitler🎉
❤
