Went to see Van Morrison in the late 90’s and had no idea that Lonnie was supporting him. It was a happy surprise. You can tell there was great respect from Van because he came out and duetted with him on a few numbers. I’m glad I can say I saw this legend before he joined the great band in the sky.

A number of people have commented that this was 2002, the year Lonnie sadly died. But in fact it was 15th October 2001 and they performed in Leamington Spa that evening. It was on tour the following year that Lonnie had his fatal heart attack.
I too watched the 2019 episode of The Voice UK, when Peter did a duet with Tom Jones. It was as will.i.am said a magical moment.
    Lonnie Donegan pure genius.

@@peterdoneganmusic. I'm Kathleen Corson and I'm from New Zealand. Your father was a genius. The King of Skiffle will always be a legend in how he's remembered by everyone who worked with him and interviewed him or watched him performing live. Peter you have alot of Lonnie in you mate. You're a singer and songwriter in your right. I love Country Music and is one of my favourite music genres like Rock and Roll is. I also like Elvis Presley music too. Elvis being the late King of Rock and Roll and your dad being the King of Skiffle. I know what it's like mate to lose your father because my father passed away too. And I have been through alot of grief since 2000. So I totally understand how much your dad meant to you as mine did me. Yes I miss my father and sadly my father was at my wedding or my almost five year old son's birth but in spirit and memories and thoughts he was. In 2000 my grandmother passed away. And I was and still is grief stricken. I miss both my dad and my grandmother every day and I see alot of them in my son. Peter your dad will be so proud of you and everything you're accomplishing in your life through music as he did before you and you're now following in Lonnie's footsteps in music but you chose Country Music hell yeah mate. Your father will be looking down on you very very proud. The one advice my grandmother taught me and actually gave me that I still use proudly today is: Be proud of who you are and what you are and don't let the likes of others walk all over you and tell you otherwise. You have every right to be who you are. Nobody should tell you otherwise. You're Lonnie Donegan's son and that performance on the Voice in 2019 was remarkable. And watching you sing was like seeing your father Lonnie sing all over again. You remind me alot of the late King of Skiffle himself each time you sing. Was this interview with your dad the last one when you were there in the interview performing that song with him. And how old were you when this interview with your dad took place.

I think we were the only young people there. Lonnie Donagan put his arms round me ,lifted me a bit and said ,int she lovely. We saw him a lot after that anywhere we could get to. We went to the Lonnie Donagan story with Peter and Anthony. When it got to the end I said my eyes are leaking and my boyfriend said me too. He was a one off.

Dear Peter Donegan. If you read this Peter, may I say that you are SO Lonnie’s son. A musician and singer that is astounding.
Although you’ve heard and and read 38 million times minimum, regarding the marvel about your dad and his inspiration. May I please ask you to read this because Lonnie was a massive part of our lives.
My dad, Charlie Oakenfull became addicted to Lonnie from the age of 15. He followed him to as many concerts as possible. He used to come home with sighed albums and dad would play them on the radiogram (If the stylus wasn’t broken obviously lol. Remember those bloody things?😂) My brother and I were about 12 and he’d wake us up about 2 in the morning to listen to Lonnie’s lastest album. Watching dad in his element meant everything.
We’re from Northampton so if your dad was playing in Wellingborough, Kettering etc..(This is 40 odd years ago now….. that scared me writing that lol 😳)
When it came to Lonnie shouting out “Any requests!?”
My dad shouted out some proper obscure requests.
One of them was Miss Otis Regrets. The band was thrown for a few seconds lol.
Dad pissed Lonnie off but in a nice way if that makes sense. At the end of a concert, my dad would hang around the bar, find out where Lonnie’s dressing room was then when he saw a barman heading there with a tray of drinks, dad stopped them and said, “Lonnie has just asked me to bring these in blah etc.”
    Lonnie said “Who are you?”
Anyway dad came out the happiest man on the planet. Dad got a free album to boot!!
Lonnie shouted out once “Oh no! it’s the bald headed twit from Northampton” Dad was thrilled he’d been acknowledged!
Then, imagine this, I’ve listened to Lonnie since I was born. I went with my dad aged about 30 then, to see him and Chris Barber at Derngate. Before the end I said let’s nip round to the stage door. I can’t begin to tell you the thrill of meeting my dad’s idol. Dad stood back and let
me rabbit on. Your dad was as lovely and funny as you see him on telly.
My dad was a singer around the pubs and clubs, and when he died, the local paper dedicated a whole page to him titled,
“Local Entertainer Charlie Oakenfull- Northampton’s answer to Lonnie Donegan dies age 61”
Peter. The reason for this sudden outpouring is because a friend of ours discovered a video of my dad and his drummer Dave singing the Battle Of New Orleans at someone’s do or whatever.
First time I’ve seen him ‘real’ and alive for over 20 years. Him singing a Lonnie song brought everything back.
    Video enclosed in reply.
Thank you for making us all so happy xxxx I❤️Peter xxxx

An absolute genius! Skiffle's as fresh now as it was 60 years ago, I could listen to Grand Coolee Dam all day, and as a contrast in tempo you have to hear his Seven Golden Daffodils...

RUclips recommended Peter Donegan audition. The duet with Tom Jones was a fabulous tribute to Lonnie, who I'm a bit too young to know. I decided to go down this rabbit hole. The first Lonnie Donegan song RUclips recommended was this. In a weird twist of fate this UK fellow is singing an old American folk song about the Grand Coulee Dam...which is about 300km from me.

Ha ha. Well dad’s career was making UK hits out of Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly hits. The most important being Rock Island Line which not only reached #8 in the US but changed the British Music Industry forever, inspiring every British Invasion band to pick up a guitar, including The Beatles to Led Zeppelin, Van Morrison and even Jack White from the White Stripes.
He introduced Americana Music into Britain.

Me and my mates rowed around a lake in Barry Island in 1956 singing Lonnie Donegal songs. I can do it now, but slower, deeper and with plenty of gravel.
