Replacing The Crank Pulley On The M47 & M57 Engines - 3 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series & X3, X5 Diesels

- Hello Everyone and welcome back to the channel.
In this video, I will be replacing the infamous Main Crank Pulley. These are harmonic balancer pulleys which means that the outer section of the pulley is rubber mounted to dampen vibrations from the engine. This unfortunately means that they are a service item with a finite life. They will normally fail after around 120,000 miles in my experience but the replacement isn't hugely difficult, just a little time consuming.
Along with the pulley, I will also be replacing the tensioners, belts and idler pulley as it makes sense to do it at the same time.
As described in the video, the length of the main belt will be determined by whether or not your car has Dynamic Drive or not. If it does then you will require the slightly longer 2160mm belt, if not then make sure to get the shorter one.
I hope that you enjoy the video, all tools and parts that I utilised in the video can be found at the links below.
Engine locking tools, these are suitable for a wide range of engines and also happen to fit the M57 in the video.

my e60 535d shredded both belts after 200000 miles last week lol, this is by far, the very best, clearest most informative video i have seen, absolutely first class, ordering my parts today, many thanks
Fantastic video, I've been looking at tutorials/videos of these for a while now and this is the best by a country mile, good job mate
Cheers buddy, means a lot 👌🏻😎
A big thank you sir!! The 8MM Bolt tip was a winner from you!! I could fix it myself for 200€ instead of paying 1115 for the mechanic! If i lived close to you I would invite you out for drinks until we got wasted!
Great video, I collect my replacement crank pulley tomorrow so will be starting this job very soon
Cheers for making the video, I was struggling to lock off the crank on my 335d.
Great video. Nice one.
Top info 👌
Great video! Very well made and loads of good info. I did mine yesterday and this video helped massively. Especially with the tensioner behind the alternator etc. Just struggling to get the stretch belt on now…..awaiting an installation tool haha.
Nice work!
Exellent job
You can see why a main dealer garage would charge you a fair few pennies for that ...another good video sir 👍
Well done and explanations.
The video lack of clarity, but people with a little experience on bemmers will get it when it comes to replacing that pulley..
Thanks!
Fantastic video thumbs up and a subscribe
I shall be referring to this when doing my crank pulley and the tensioners etc as this is a very unfamiliar job for me being a motorcycle mechanic
Thanks for the sub! 👌😎
Decent video 👍
Thanks 👍🏻
Hope my video helped for doing this mate! I never actually saw another video of someone replacing the drive belt kit with these types of tensioners - you're right, they are a pain!
I haven’t seen it as it goes bud, I’ll have a look, didn’t realise that you had also done this job, weird though as I’ve watched a few of your vids, I’d have thought that one would have shown in my suggested vids!

Can I actually lock the engine with high gear keeping belt on and undo the bolts then without having to use the tool and to it same way when torquing new pulley? Thanks
Hello Sir, is it a good idea to buy a bmw which has just been replaced crankshaft pulley? The previous owner selling it just after the replacement? A bad pulley can do further damage to engine or timing chain? Thanks
Hi, are the screws tightened to 40 nm? and that's it ?
Hi, is it possible that a broken pulley is causing the gearbox, DSC and Driver Airbag Safety System to fail? Apparently, due to poor charging caused by a worn pulley, the BMW e65 catches such errors? My E65 is also 3.0d but 2003
Regards
if 8mm is the diameter of part of the tool that inserts into the flex plate what is the diameter of the section than mates the bell housing hole??
I would not recommend locking the flywheel to remove the crankshaft pulley bolt, you can end up damaging the flywheel as the bolt is torqued up to around 400nm.
This is how I did it: ruclips.net/video/Q2L77L6CJWY/видео.html
*Correction, just watched the rest and noticed that this is the later style pulley with the 4 small bolts like the N47/N57
I was wondering where you were going with that dude, I agree though, when I did the pulley on my old 320d a few years back before I had my channel, it’s bloody tight! 👍🏻
this is a different harmonic balancer with only one bolt and not 4 torx bolts?????
I followed this too a tee. All went well until I turned the car on and the pulley is either bent or not balanced. On tickover the car has a noticeable shake which wasn’t there prior to failure. Disappears with a few hundred rpm. But something ain’t right on mine. I suspect the pulley is out of balance?
Hi Kev
Thank you very much your video and advices. Helpful and amazing. Tell me please the 8 mm bolt is it safe? If I replace the crankshaft pulley I cant brake in the bolt? If I buy brand new quality 8mm bolt is it enough strong to hold the engine?
I'm sorry buddy but I'm not sure what it is that you mean? Do you mean to hold the flywheel with an 8mm bolt?
@@KevsShed Yes
@@officialglitch-r Ah right, now I understand, no a bolt would work, there won't be a huge amount of pressure applied to the bolt but if you have a tensile steel bolt then that would probably be better. Equally, an old 8mm drill bit would be perfect!
Thank you very much Kev
I'm struggling to remove the fan because engine keeps turning over as I'm pulling the wrench
If I only want to crank the shaft clock wise (without that locking pin in the back) so that I can remove the AC compressor belt (instead of taking out the entire pulley), do I need some kind of special tool to spin the crank shaft? Since there are four pulley bolts, is it safe that I crank it using only 1 of the 4 bolts? The ISTA doesn't talk about it.
I wouldn’t, they aren’t particularly heafty and you risk shearing one off. The tool that I linked in the video description is pretty cheap to be fair! 👍🏻
Hi do I have to get the 120 deg turn perfect on every bolt as I don’t have a degree tool ?
As good as you can achieve by eye will suffice 👌🏻
I’ve replaced my crank pulley with a Corteco one and it wobbles more than my original BMW one. All bolts torqued to 40nm and roughly 120deg turn. Any ideas what it could be?
Just wondering what socket you used to turn the crank as it has the 4 bolts in the centre?
In the kit there was a socket with 4 holes in. This fits snuggly over the 4 bolts and allows you to rotate the pulley with a ratchet or similar.
@@KevsShed Many thanks, I do have that tool but wondered if I was missing something and there was another way.
@@KevsShed Mine is all done and it took about 90 mins to do and no more knocking noise!, I highly recommend getting the proper pin to lock the flywheel, the hardest part was getting the flywheel plug out! Great video and very helpful 👍🏻

Is it completely necessary to replace the tensioner after Crankshaft pulley failure? Thanks in advance.
No mate, I only did it so I didn’t have to redo the job later 👍🏻 if your confident in the tensioners serviceability then no need to exchange.
@@KevsShed fantastic, last question, any tips on how to get the aircon belt on. Broke the laser plastic tool on first attempt. Cheap rubbish lol.
If you was unscrew the 4 bolts before the belt and car is on gear. You don't need this tools for crank :)
😂😂😂
If the car is auto, you have no other choice than lock the engine.
Good video, just too much unnecessary talking, and repeating the same things sometimes. could have made the video in half the time.
