  • This is the last clip from my Oct 27 Spider Grub smallie session. Both my Go Pro cameras decided to die on the same week, so these tight cell phone clips were all I could get. However, these clips at least give a good idea how well late fall smallies chew this jig and you can see first hand why I like TFO's Professional Walleye Series 7'6" M power fast action rod paired with a KastKing BFS 7.2:1 reel for this presentation.
I've experimented with several rod lengths & powers and various reels as well as fluorocarbon, mono & braid before I settled on this exact set up.
The KastKing reel is specifically designed to cast light baits, it holds about 100 yards of 8 lb. masterbraid and the 7'6" rod allows me to make casts of 40-45 yards with ease. The other thing is the longer rod & braided line allows for rock solid hooksets, while the rod's good parabolic action helps keep the fish pinned on light line.
And remember when fishing open deep water flats/basins like I do in Lake Ontario there's not much for the fish to get tangled up in or on, so you don't need a heavy action rod or big line to enjoy these Eastern Basin smallmouth..
