- This video covers the basics for fishing tackle needed to troll for Lake Ontario Salmon and Trout.
Mainly I discuss rods and reels that are good if you are starting out with trolling, using a dipsy diver or downrigger. I also talk briefly about the different kinds of lures that you want to have when hitting the lake.

Thanks. Really helpful for someone getting started.
Great info package for a newbie! Keep it up.
Lots of great information. Loved how you took the time to explain the terminal tackle and rod and reels. I’ve been to Peters tackle, love the selection they have. I subscribed to your channel, hope to see you around.

Thanks Adrian! I'll be there in the fall :)
Great video, thanks again!
Great video man, well spoken and lot's of concise info.
Super informative!!! Lots of good info for beginners fishing the big waters
Thanks Phil, glad you found it informative!
Great video, definitely good advice for someone just getting into it and not just trying to sell the most expensive gear. I started out with dipsy divers years ago and eventually graduated to downriggers. Oh, and that watermelon spoon works all summer over here on western Lake Superior.
Really great video, just bought my first boat the other day I'll be running 1 downrigger and 1 on a dipsy, taking your advice. thanks!
Awesome to hear Slavko have fun and good luck out there!
I have a Lakemaster Manual Scotty downrigger, what size lead weight would you recommend for just starting on lake ontario? Im in a Tracker Superguide V16 SC
A-TOM-MIK flys are the best. Always have one or two running
Nice work Lyle. Lots of great info here
Thanks Dan, hope to see some rigger shots from you guys soon!
Great video Lyle!
when fishing divers do you just follow the chart provided in the package or do you have a general rule of thumb based on the diver setting and regular or magnum diver( every 2 feet of line out is 1 foot down on a 2 setting on a regular diver)
Hey Curtis, this is going to sound wierd but I worry that much about trying to calculate my depth based on line out. I fish everything relative to where I'm getting bit / seeing fish on my screen.
I base this on a lot of hours on the water to get a feel that lets say a 120 diver on a 3.5 setting will get me down 30ish feet. From there I can increase it or decrease it based on depth or where fish are marking.
One thing with divers that makes them tricky to depend on the charts with is that the more line you have out, the greater the current / drag effect has on the diver. This is also influenced by if youre running a spoon or a big paddle/meat etc.
An example is if I run a 50 foot diver in 35 feet of water on a 3 setting. I'm probably pretty close to bottom with that if not hitting. Then, if I go out to 70 feet of water and run a 100 foot diver on a 3 setting, I won't be even close to bottom.
I'm sure the chart accounts for that, but I have found in the field the chart is off a bit.
Cheers,
Lyle
So how much for 1 complete dipsy diver set up,,,rod,,reel,,line,,line,,dipsy,,swivels, flasher,,howie flie,,,,,and any thing biting in river or bar
Hi Tom, a few fish being caught at the Bar right now. Hearing of some nice mature kings and some decent rainbow as well. A decent setup all in is going to run in the 200- 225 range if you count the line, and flasher, fly, fluoro etc.
I hate the “triple grip”
What knots do u use
I use a uni knot on mono and fluro, and a polamar knot on braid.
