  • Cleaning is the biggest and most important part of re-building a weber three-barrel carburetor.
    We have refined our methods over the years and have many a must-do when it comes to the Weber IDTP carburetor.
    Our method of cleaning will remove the surface color of the carburetor. We do not use any type of dip, but instead, blast the carburetor.
    If you followed along from the Complete Teardown video
    • Weber Triple Barrel 40...
    you should have your carburetors completely apart and ready for cleaning.
    After cleaning we can begin to inspect the parts. Starting with the throttle shafts and ending with the jets, we measure every part.
    The carburetor bodies are repaired before they go out for coloration. And by inspecting every part, we know what to buy to get this set ready for re-assembly.
    Some of the tools that we use in this tutorial
    2.5mm drill bit, amzn.to/3b1w6aN
    Vapor hone blaster
    Glass bead
    Ceramic polisher
    Brass Tumbler, amzn.to/387Gz2v
    Tumbler media, amzn.to/3n8zcfA
    Tumbler soaps, amzn.to/3rVjiZN Lemishine, amzn.to/2XaFlgx
    Micrometer and stand, amzn.to/3hIJpyb Stand, amzn.to/3oaOS35
    Starret straight edge, amzn.to/389fuMg
    Pin Gauge set, you have to convert to metric, amzn.to/3pImB4l

    Good video and nice to see how a pro does it.
    When the floatbowls were manufactured they were cleaned from soldering residue and getting back to shiny by sitting in diluted acetic acid followed by some brushing, works for all brass parts.

      Sure that will work although the light acid will still work at eroding the brass. When it comes to floats that are 40 plus years old sometimes it still just best to replace them.

    Love ALL your content and follow frequently. For those of us rebuilding 40 IDFs with less equipment, do you have any preferred bath chemicals for ultrasonic cleaning carb parts?

    • @klassikats

      I find that the baths and ultrasonic cleaners to be some what ineffective. Depending on the condition of the carburetor those systems tend not to do a very good job,.

      Thanks Kurt. I had mixed results myself so I was starting to question my method and cleaners. Appreciate your videos and advice.

    Is there any reason (I'm sure there is!) you use a tumbler to clean your brass and not your vibrating polisher? Loving these tutorials - thanks

    • @klassikats
      @klassikats  3 года назад

      Neven, the vibratory polisher is way too big! Even if we wired the parts together we would never find them again in the big polisher. The ceramic pieces are also way too big to get a polish on the small parts.
      We used to use a dry walnut shell vibratory polisher and switched to wet polishing as it is far superior to dry polishing. The stainless steal media is small enough to polish and small enough to get stuck in places too!
      Thanks for watching and glad your enjoying the tutorials.

    Quick question, do you also do an acid dip on the carburetor body before cerekote or just the sandblasting?

    • @klassikats
      @klassikats  2 года назад +1

      Only Sandblast, there is no need for an acid dip
      Thanks

    i need a vapor blasting machine. is there certain pressure setting when blasting these parts? its usually around 100psi, no?

    • @klassikats
      @klassikats  3 года назад

      Blasting pressure will depend on the specific machine you are using. My machine runs at 90 to 100 PSI. You don't have to use a vapor blast machine, you can use a regular dry blast machine. Just make sure the blast media is not too coarse and that you completely clean out all remnants of the blasting media.

    Can you tell me what the Weber factory anodizing finish is please?

    • @klassikats
      @klassikats  3 года назад

      anodizing does not work well on cast aluminum parts due to the impurities contains in the pores of the structure. Most of the coatings used on the carburetor bodies are a form of chem film. There are not many plate shop left that will attempt the process any more and colors and finish quality will vary greatly.

      @@klassikats So what finish would you recommend then?

    • @klassikats
      @klassikats  3 года назад +2

      Chemical Film on Aluminum, also called by proprietary names of Alodine or Irridite, is a thin, clear or yellow conversion coating used as a primer for paint, general protection to prevent aluminum from oxidizing.

    What media are you using?

    • @klassikats
      @klassikats  3 года назад +1

      In our vapor blast machine I use a combination glass bead and aluminum oxide mix. In the polisher i use a smooth cylindrical ceramic.
