NOTIFICATION SQUAD: To miss the Natsuki cameo in this video would be a crime! Well folks, you can't beat a good road trip and this was easily one of the most fun videos I've produced in 9 years. A HUGE thanks to my best American friend PETE for coming along for the ride (even if his motives were questionable). You can find him over on Twitch where he streams most nights (🌟www.twitch.tv/premiertwo ) and I look forward to stopping by and doing some shows with him in a few weeks to celebrate surviving our journey.

I cant wait to watch
Hi chris
Fuckin love you:)
The drastic difference in their personalities is just a joy to witness haha
They remind me of BoJack Horseman and Mr. Peanut Butter

I think it's a good representation of the general American attitude vs. the general British attitude
@@pajamaman2989 Really? In my part of the country, or maybe those of my generation in this part of the country at least, are skilled in being sarcastic assholes. America is like a patchwork quilt. No patch is alike, and many of the patches clash. If you want me to be annoyingly perky, it's going to be a lot of work. If I'm billed for any of that hard work, that perk will never happen again. Really, Chris is a ray of sunshine compared to me.
A true Brit and American. The pessimistic sarcasm and optimistic excitement are a great combo
The happy enthusiastic american and the non excited sarcastic complaining Brit, best combo ever
Yeah it’s so archetypical lmao
The juxtaposition of these two opposite archetypes gave me the most pleasant case of whiplash I've had in a minute, lol
Hail to the Brits ahah
LOL glad somebody noticed🎯
Ah yes get me the number 9 large - Brit and American style
Pete needs to be on more often. Dude is a fucking riot.
pete has been appearing everywhere lately, he's premiertwo if that name brings u any bells in a lot of chris's more recent streams and videos
I was waiting for the inevitable "Wakkanai"/"Wakannai" gag. I was not disappointed.
“Hey, do you know what Japan’s northernmost town is?”
“Wakkanai.”
“Ok, I’ll ask someone else.”
I don’t get it
@@Scott_Raynor The great part about your comment is I don't know whether it's a metajoke or the joke genuinely went over your head.
In case someone genuinely doesn't get the joke from watching the video: Wakkanai can sound similar to wakannai (I dunno) in Japanese.
Nice pfp ;)

I had to watch some of your early vids to compensate for the yank squirrel.
@@AbroadinJapan Chris you may not get this refrence but "for the mug" is a journey I understand. See in Elite Dangerous there's a station called Hutton Orbital out near Proxima Centauri. The problem is you can't just jump to Proxima Centauri, you have to jump to Alpha Centauri, then fly in Supercruise for 70+ minutes. So Hutton Orbital sells a commiserative mug. There's also a near by beacon that's called "For The Mug" and if you scan it, the beacon tells the history of Hutton Orbital, the mug, and the Hutton Truckers(a group of independent long haul space freight carriers).
@@AbroadinJapan mr 12k fucking hilarious

Normally, Brits are masters of understatement sarcasm, but Chris is over the top 😀
Their entire adventure was just a pun for "I don't remember"
In their defense, this is one of the best puns I've ever seen.
It was incredible... I have the biggest grin on my face right now
The moment I heard the name of the town, I knew that Natsuki just didn't remember where he bought the mug.
My Japanese is ridiculously poor, so I was pretty proud of myself for guessing this would be the outcome!
Wakannai
This was maybe one of the best videos Chris has ever done. I don’t know if it was legit or scripted, but I laughed so hard, when Natsuki explained the mixup, that I couldn’t catch my breath.
@Erozpl01 01 They wrote the script in the Kansan Cabin
@@mabimabi212 Lmaooo
I mean honestly even otherwise, I loved the video, it showed some of the most beautiful places in Japan
My guess is that specific scene occurred after they found out, but the trip began before they found out. They probably figured it out halfway through and were like "we can just recreate our surprise for the one scene."
When Pete was telling the "how-we-met" story, you knew for sure he was lying, when he said "... and he pulled out his business card and..." - pfft, everyone knows Chris is the only person in Japan to never have a business card on hand
So it's true, Natsuki is so powerful people will travel to the ends of the earth to replace a mug he gifted them. We should be glad he is a benevolent god.
May he walk with you on your next journey
🙏
Are you sure he is a benevolent God ? He sounded pretty diabolical when he was laughing 😁
In only 100 years time that Buddha will be replaced with Natsuki holding a balloon.
How great is our god.
This feels like Abroad in Japan rebooted or the sequel to Abroad in Japan. How did we go all these years without seeing Pete and then all of a sudden it's revealed to be Chris's best friend for years?? This is like the new Fast and Furious movie because after 8 movies they never mention it but then we discover Vin Diesel has a brother and it's John Cena
This! Chris's best kept secret
Best *american* friend
@@Ryukushinn ONLY American friend
He's just the American version of Pete Donaldson. He is: American Pete.
22:46 you can see the understanding in Chris' face when Natsuki said "What do you mean?" and waited for the right time to absolutely rail Pete about his misunderstanding
I lived in Wakkanai over the winter of 1968-69. We had 266 inches of snow that winter. Now I live in Minneapolis, and when people ask how I can stand the winters here where we average 54 inches of snow, I just smile.
As a Texan, we can barely stand 1-3 inches
My hometown is Wakkanai, so I'm glad to see Wakkanai featured!
WAKKANAI and WAKANNAI are so similar that even the locals often make puns about them (lol).
I know right, it's such good play on words

LOOK AT THAT ROCK
Pete is probably one of the most entertaining guests you've had on the show because the only thing he needs to he fun and funny is his charisma. What a joy to watch ^^
Pete's loud American optimism is a good balance with Chris' blunt British cynicism. Loved watching him join you and Connor's biking adventure in Hokkaido. That positivity he put out really shined through.
I didn't know that I needed a spunky, American counterpoint to Chris, but this duo between Pete's enthusiastic finger-guns and Chris's sarcasm and eyebrow raising is perfection.
I agree ying-yang, balanced
It's the perfect marriage 🥰
Hehe, spunky.
Yes! more Pete!
@@DanVR001 it means something different in America rather than the UK
I love the contrast between the two , with Pete's all American enthusiasm and Chris's dry British humour. 😂
20:00 Looks like the scene from Dumb + Dumber:
"Extra gloves? You've had this extra pair of gloves the whole time?"
I thought i was alone in this thought as I am an overly enthusiastic American lol

Wait that would be just a Coolish run
Pete's overreacting on almost everything on camera is so cringey
@@onengkusumah2905 I'm certain that he's not exaggerating or putting on a show here because I have an friend that acts exactly like this, a little over the top and full of energy.
That ending scene from 27:28 though - I'd love to see an animated series of this duo and their (mis)adventures!
This is seriously like a short movie in itself. The plot is very well written and the plot twist with Natsuki and Pete not understanding each other was spot on. Paired it with the nice cinematography of the picturesque spots you guys visited and that bit Pete did after the twist was so good. It almost feels like you guys wrote a script and are just acting it out.

5:28 Chris sounds like that one kid who doesn't want to be on a family vacation and would much rather be at home.
Because displaying too much enthusiasm about anything is NOT the Broad way, apparently. 😆
If you want to see Chris enthusiastic, just dangle a piece of fried chicken in front of his face. He would probably cry tears of happiness 😋
That duo just works the script soooo goood.
Most satisfying.
"Are we there yet?!" 😆😂
Correct. Broadly speaking.
this guy is a gem to be around, i'll love to see him again in future episodes
I make a pilgrimage to this video every once in a while. Chris's subtle, yet menacing gaze of absolute fury and astonishment when Natsuki says he doesn't know where he bought the mug is easily the greatest part of any Abroad in Japan video.
The moment when Natsuki said "違う、違う"... HOLYSHIT DID YOU MAKE A TRIP TO WAKKANAI FOR A STUPID PUN?!

I must say, the chemistry of a goofy optimistic american guy and a cranky cynical british guy really goes well together like the odd couple. Definitely entertaining dynamic especially the whole wakkanai situation
I was just thinking that.
Same. I love watching Chris and all of his friends, but nothing beats the sheer chaotic energy of putting a Brit and an American together.
This is the epitome of a family trip going to a new place, that was meant to be a bonding trip. Beginning there’s excitement, happiness and end with disappointment and estranged relationship, the total opposite of expectations lol
i seriously think this is chris's best video not only due to editing and presentation, but the hilarious chemistry between chris and peter. i've rewatched this video so many times.
If Abroad in Japan ever has a series finale, the big reveal will be that Chris Broad is actually being forced to make these videos against his will, by a Kumamon mascot with an aluminum bat.
that would be brilliant!! hope he does make a video about these mascots
Imagine the insane energy that would generate if Pete The American, Risottoro, Pete Donaldson, and Natsuki were in the same room together

It would shred the fabric of reality. It would no longer be Abroad in Japan...
Japan would be Abroad.
But also, at the 10th trip, he really should go big and bring everyone! Rent a tour bus!

Holy cow, that Hokkaido is beautiful in winter.
That scene with sea pillars was breathtaking.
Best part is 22:54 where you can see the moment from Pete's facial expression where he realizes the fail.
I love how Chris has lived in Northern Japan for years but in every winter video he’s made, he still dresses like he’s expecting a drizzly winter in Kent.
The difference is the SCARF. Chris only wears that when it's relatively cold. Bare in mind he is British, so quite cold by nature 😏
@@HeavenlyCreature. honestly we don't get it that cold here, it's just always a *little* cold all year round (except a few days/weeks in the middle of summer). Even on the Northeast coast of England where I'm from you don't get snow this bad very often, maybe once every few years.
