My mom taught me the best way to hide my cash when traveling. You can get a flat fanny pack that you can hide under your shirt. That way you can keep the majority of your cash safe, and you can keep a small bill in your front pocket. Someone tried to pickpocket me on the French subway. He tried to reach in my coat pocket, and my friend yelled my name and pointed at the guy, and he backed off. Nothing was in my coat pocket, all hidden in my fanny pack under my shirt. I was only 13, and I remember how shocked I was that an adult tried to steal from a child.
Reminds me of a story from a different corner of the internet where a fellow took a similar approach to pickpockets but instead of a decoy wallet he cut a hole in his pocket and slipped his privates in there for the pickpocket to get a handful of 😆
That *really* sucks and I'm so sorry that you and your wife had such a horrible experience when you came to visit our capital, Pete ☹thieves and pick pockets are a bit of a hot topic here in the UK at the moment. Police are kind of apathetic to this sort of thing too. It's pretty embarrassing! As someone who was born and lived in London for over 35 years, I really hope if you guys come back, get outside of London as there are so many great cities, towns and villages around the UK. Sending good vibes 🧡
Yeah... it's more of a "London" thing than a "UK" thing thanks.. London is dogsh** compared to the rest of the UK, not even in the top 5.. it's mostly visited due to the royalty there and being the capital but it's knife/crime central of UK lol. Hopefully Pete doesn't write off England as a whole, Chris should have been more upfront about it instead of romanticizing it.
I am not mad about the lack of daily uploads... lofty goal, but so happy to see one when it pops up on my feed. You do a great job, and worth the wait. Props to you and the editing crew, buy I will wait and keep an eye out. Love the content and work (shoutout to the hard working editing crew). Keep up the awesome job.
Was good to see Pete on the podcast but as someone who travels frequently but is terrified of big cities due to fear of crime, due to multiple previous experiances, this hit home hard. Wishing him and Yuki both financial and emotional recovery. The non stop work culture of Japan makes it to where one puts their entire hopes/outlook on the 1 week a year that they might be given freedom to travel and be themselves, this crime hits on so many stress points for a person. :( Wishing them both the best and (if possible) for Yuki to find a better more understanding and flexible employer.
Totally agree.the high quality mini documentary is worth waiting for. For me it is an intro to part of Japan I knew little about beyond the tsunami and after math.
I’m gutted for Pete and Yuki, I’m from England and it’s embarrassing that this is how they were treat - even down to just being told to fill in a form online! I’m from Yorkshire, we generally rarely go down to London unless there’s a cool/special event on and you can surely tell the difference in how cold strangers are there. Where I live you could say “Good morning” “Hello” or whatever as you walk past people and they’ll say it back with a smile, when I visited my cousins down South people just ignored me being polite haha. Hopefully Pete and Yuki can come back to England and make happier memories! :)
Hi Chris, I’ve always appreciated your “quality over quantity” philosophy when it comes to content. Daily videos were always going to be a big ask as I am sure there are daily logistical issues. A big shout out out to you, Sharla (I am really enjoying her BTS Vlogs) and the rest of the gang for what you have achieved so far, I am greatly looking forward to what is to come.
I'm glad Chris realises how good the quality of the work is. Because by now everybody else knows. I'm thinking that looking back, years later we will be still discussing about the effect these videos have and had. It's been a privilege
If you had filmed the series in November, 21 videos in the first 21 days of December may have been acheivable. However, filming, editing, and releasing at the same time while achieving the quality that you and your team manage to deliver is just an impossible ask. Either way, I've absolutely enjoyed every episode and I appreciate you trying to push yourself, your guests, and your team to the highest heights. Love your work!
Chris, just take your time and put your health first. You videos are worth waiting. I thank you for your high quality videos always. Pete, I'm glad you've come back without injury. I wish you and Yuki a beautiful Christmas!
Hey long time viewer, 30 years old, 15 of those watching youtube, watching Chris since 2018 if I recall lol. Chris, genuinely and respectfully, your channel is not a video a day kind of channel and that's perfectly okay. I think your best, and when you're at your best, is in the longer form 10-30 minute content :) In other news. God... I'm so glad Pete and Yuki are okay and everything got worked out to some degree. Holy cow.
As an Aussie who only started visiting London about 6yrs ago, I love the place. Have been many times since and mostly on solo trips. We need a Pete in London video or 2, or 3 or 4. 😁
Thank you for the explanation for the daily videos. High respect for you and your group. I love the awesome quality of these videos. Best series on RUclips! Look forward to seeing more.
Back in 2003 my Mom got robbed by motorcycle robbers in London where she was visiting for a wedding. They snatched her purse as she was walking which had her jewlery, credit cards, cash and passport & ids. Ive never been robbed or pickpocketed but I can only imagine how bad it must feel to fall victim to that.
Pete, I would go to Glasgow. It has similiar city vibes, it's one of the greenest cities in the UK, and it was also voted most friendly city in Scotland. You will regain that love for the UK via Glasgow!
I just want to say that you always produce videos to such a high level of quality. That the team can produce them as regularly as they are is incredible. I'm very happy that they are coming as often as they are and that it's not actively killing you, unlike JAJ1 the Cycling of Despair. I really appreciate how you're always producing interesting videos to a very high level of quality,.
I kinda get how Pete feels. I never really had any interest in London, being from up north, but when I did finally spend an extended period of time there on holiday prior to starting a job there, I kind of built up a more flattering perception of it in my mind. After working there for almost 2 years, I can say that I've never been pickpocketed (fingers crossed), but it really isn't 'all that' in my opinion lol
The “transplants” view of London is very different to the born and raised Londoner who’s experiences aren’t limited (not saying yours were) around touristy or commuter hub areas. However, I understand having a strong affinity to where you are from. I feel the same as a south east Londoner (born and raised). Peace! 😇
@@hannah60000 I get this same sentiment of NYC, having lived here for 20+ years. People come here as tourists, spend time in a 20x20 block radius around Times Square, and make a grand proclamation about how unlivable it is. Neither NYC, or London, or any similarly large global city should be experienced that way.
to be fair I really like SE London, Greenwich in particular is very nice and I've been fortunate to spend a lot of time there. However others part of London, I've not enjoyed so much. I think it's because comparatively there's a lot more greenery in Greenwich, so I gravitate towards there@@hannah60000
Just so you know, every video from this journey across Japan series is #1 on my lost of daily recommendations when you release it. So youtube is promoting it just fine on my end
Im about 3 hours outside of Kansas city and I have spent 3 months total visiting Japan 2 different trips. Both trips I have dropped my passport in Japan and someone has rushed around trying to find me. I'm forever grateful and im very much not interested in visiting other countries specifically because anywhere else in the world that would have been gone.
It doesn't matter how many CCTV cameras you've got if you don't use them efficiently and correctly. Andrew Gosden, for example, managed to disappear right outside of King's Cross station in central London (when they finally found him on the CCTV footage from the station all the footage from surrounding cameras had been erased).
I have to say I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all the vids AbroadInJapan has been releasing this month, but I’ve noticed that RUclips wasn’t recommending them to me. I’ve been making sure to go to the channel page and watch them
I went to Iceland, England and France earlier in the year, our travel agent told us London and Paris have pickpockets. There were signs warning about pickpockets at the airport when you arrive at both London and Paris. We took precautions and thankfully never had an issue. I recommend one of those backpacks that is knife resistance and has a lock for the zippers.
As someone who was born in and lived in London for 50 years, I can assure you it's not a new thing with the thieving scumbags in the tourist spots and I include the legal thieving scumbags who own stores that charge 5x the price of everything too! As for the not so friendly attitudes in central, most Londoners are there doing jobs they'd rather not be doing in an area they'd rather not be working in. You'll find people do get a little friendlier as you get further out, but generally London does tend to make you a little gruff after a time, much like NY really! Sucks it happened to someone who is usually so positive though, his lasting memory of London shouldn't have been that.....
Yeah, if you ever go to the UK for a holiday, don't go or stay in London, it's really not nice there. Everything you can see there has something better elsewhere. Go down the Bath for a couple of days, see Stonehenge & the Cotswolds. Go down to Canterbury and see the wonky Tudor streets & see Dover Castle. Travel north to see Hadrian's Wall. I legitimately at most would spend a single day in London sightseeing if you felt the need to. You'll spot most of the sights (Big Ben, Westminster Abbey etc) within a couple of hours. Don't bother trying to go into anything, just get your photos from outside and move on. Then save those other days for places outside of London which are nicer and more relaxed.
@@ThisAlbino That's great for you, but it's still not a nice place to visit. I've been there hundreds of times as it's like 45 minutes by train and I live in Kent. London is a sh*thole and full of crime. And even if you ignored that part, it's too busy, expensive and just grimy.
@@ThisAlbino No, it is objectively better to go outside of London. The tourist attractions will be better (subjective) Things will be more affordable (objective) Crime is less prevalent (objective) Things will be less busy (objective) There is literally no benefit to spending more than a couple of hours in London at most. And even that is questionable.
Queens native. Pickpocketing in general is pretty rare in NYC. I guess it could happen in busy places but I’ve never been hit or robbed in my life. Criminals are robbing CVS’s not individual people like they used to lol
Eh idk man, I do put my wallet in my backpack interior when I travel but I grew up outside Boston and never had issues just going out drinking with friends with my wallet in my pocket. I think the better advice is be aware of your surroundings. They say these pick pockets can be slick but any time I am that close to crowds or people I make sure to be alert of anyone super close to me. I think general care for your belongings and being alert are fine steps. I also wear pretty fitted jeans and there is no effing way that wallet is coming out unnoticed based on all the pick pocket content I've seen.
@@donywahlberg well it’s impossible to be aware of your surroundings in crowds. Like on a subway when you’re forced to stand super close to other people. A skilled thief can easily grab anything from your back pocket in a crammed subway car.
Yeah man I think you've done great! Even if you didn't reach your goal with daily vids you still did heck of a thing! Hope you get some well deserved rest!
For anybody planning to go to London. That area is notorious for pickpockets, like many tourist areas in London. Also NEVER play the cup and ball trick that criminals play on Westminster Bridge! They are all part of the same gang and have lookouts on each end of the bridge watching for police. Stay safe people.
Chris, I don't care that your new adventure is not up everyday. I am glad that you are doing this trip and uploading it every few day... I still can't keep up. Will get through them all one day. My husband and I watch it together and having an almost 2 year old doesn't give us much time. 😅 Pete, that sucks! I know what it's like to be pick pocketed. It was Christmas time and I was only like 12 and my parents gave me money to buy presents. It's not as bad as you, with all your cards, but I understand how bad you and your wife felt. I hope they find the people who pickpocketed you!
Should have gone to bruges. It was close, safe and the most beautiful city in the region. Especially for someone all the way from japan, they would appreciate the architecture.
I think it is really great, the quality is really high and after seeing them assumed that daily all high quality and now maximum number of videos for longer set of time is known
I am just really really sad for Yuki and Pete. You'd think UK would have security cameras and constant monitoring near the bloody Big Ben - the houses of Parliament and what not. I am really devastated for them. Hope things turn in a better direction.
No the UK is going downhill very fast, we imported 1.2 million people last year and London is only 37% English/British now, it's a dump and the police don't police actual crime anymore, especially if you're in a protected group.
@@Norf.F.C.Zoomer‘especially if you’re in a protected group’ The cognitive dissonance here is astounding…. Also, per Pete's feelings on London and the coldness is very similar to NYC. If you're in Manhattan during the day on a work day, nobody there working is going to be particularly friendly. Most are nice enough if you need help getting pointed in the right direction though

When I lived in Berlin many years ago, I was staying in a hostel while looking for an apartment. I would take all my valuables with me to work and then lock it in the locker at the hostel once I got back. One day after having locked everything in my locker, I went to the grocery store to grab some food for lunch. I came back and everything valuable was taken from my locker: my laptop, my camera, my iPad plus 600 euros I had in cash. A top of that, my phone had been stolen at a bar a week before. And I know both times who had taken the stuff but they left before I could do anything about it. So I feel for you Pete.
lol that's exactly what hapenned to me on my second week of living in Berlin. My expensive laptop and a bunch of money were stolen from a private hotel room. I was dumb to leave them there. Good thing they didn't take my passport in which I put the money.
Pete‘s hair looks like he has been through it, too… please let your guests shower regularly Chris 😅 poor guys. Love you guys nonetheless ❤ also have been enjoying the journey immensely!!!! Thanx for your hard work! Have a good Christmas 🎄
Go to Cornwall. You can fly to Newquay from London. By the time you take off and have a cup of tea, you're landing. Go between May - August, and you will not be disappointed. Renting a car is a must.
Maidstone! Practically on my doorstep in Rochester. Maybe we should do a fundraiser for Pete. London is no less safe than anywhere else but you always have to be aware of your surroundings. Hard to do when you are a tourist.
I traveled alone in Japan and I quickly learned to having my backpack in front of me. I would always pat myself every so often to know whether or not I was pickpocketed. Yes, I know you are less likely to get pick pocketed in Japan, but still. Hope she doesn't feel that it's her fault. No one should be robbed in the first place!
Pete and his wife are wonderful, amazing people that deserved an amazing vacation in London. I hope Chris takes Pete and his wife on a great london tour vacation next year. 😎👍 Great video and stories Chris and Pete.
Whenever I go to other countries, especially places like the UK, NEVER be too absent minded, it sucks and I feel like Yuki got too used to how safe Japan is, and understimated how many scumbags there are in Europe. Feel like someone should have told Pete about these types of things, sucks that it happened to him and his wife since he's such a good dude, lesson learned I guess.
We used to go to London with the kids, every summer for all of their childhood. And we used to stay in very cheap hotels. We were never robbed out in the streets. Since we were wearing backpacks on the front always. But we lost lots of stuff from the cheap hotel rooms though. That was before bankcards, and when everyone were using cash. Just remember to wear your back packs on the front from now on, and your stuff will be a lot safer! x
The absolute CONTENT. The Podcast being done in this format honestly feel even better. No offense to Pete Donaldson, but I am eagerly waiting for you to come to Japan and have side by side podcast!
Thinking back. My only mishap traveling was in London. I landed, got my bag, and went to my room only to find that my bag was swapped with someone else's which was EXACTLY like my own (it had my tag on it). My actual bag ended up in Spain and I never got it back. Otherwise London was a jolly good time.
If you're looking for more of the English experience like local pubs and cobblestones, I'd recommend York or Cornwall, Pete. London isn't the best experience of what the UK has to offer. I'd also recommend Edinburgh for Scotland. It's where I live and for being the capital, you don't really have to worry about pickpockets. If you and Yuki ever visit, I'll treat you guys to a few pints to not sour your experience of the UK.😅
Of course, it’s subjective. I’m a London native, and what tourist view London as isn’t what a native would call “real” London. I do agree that the UK is more than London and there are nice places/things outside of London, but I do also think non-London natives tend to complain and misunderstand what makes London London.
Pete's London trip was vastly different than mine. I went in 2012 with my wife and grandfather. We were there for 9 days, and of course we also saw things outside of London, too. The wife & I knew to keep our belongings in our front pockets, and our hand on our valuables. When I went to Piccadilly Circus, in certain areas you would see signs posted up that would say, "Beware of Pickpockets" I am curious at what hotel Pete stayed at. I was on at one on the Russell Square line, and it was near a lot of good stuff. We stayed at the Imperial London Hotel the year we went. We had the option of Continental Breakfast every morning. The wife and I also met a bunch of friendly Londoners, too. It seemed a lot more friendly than Pete & Chris described. Yeah, there were a few folks who weren't, but a majority of folks seemed fine (this was also 11 years ago). London was great around Christmas time. Hyde Park with Winter Wonderland. Piccadilly Circus with the Santa hat on Freddy Mercury. Just how festive some of the areas were, it was real nice.
Poor Pete. Feel so bad for your honeymoon trip disaster. All places have good and bad things about them, for me an American I ended up in Spain. Of the 3 countries UK, France and Spain , Spain for me is the most livable. Look forward to seeing you in the Abroad in Japan episode.
Nobody really NEEDS daily uploads, but in trying to do that, I feel like the stuff you've learned from this journey was well worth the added stress. Also nothing wrong with being able to stretch the releases by another few weeks, means you have plenty of content to bleed into the next year.
I would reccomend that Pete visits Edinborough, it is in my opinion the nicest people in the UK and people are a lot more open to a chat with a stranger. So someone who is more extroverted like Pete would fit in really well.
Pete should try Edinburgh or lake district. Wherever you go you should always keep your bag opening at the front or use pockets inside jackets and keep jacket closed.
I want you guys to go to Liverpool if you come back to the UK, it's a bit rough around the edges, but such a great city, great people, so much history, I would love to see your reactions to it. Recommend going to Sefton Park and Lark Lane in spring/summer.
Omg, that’s awful experience! I’m so sorry that happened to you guys! And that on your Honey moon! I hope you recover from the financial loss asap and that story remains as a just a funny story to tell your kids one day!
Think thats common, when i was a kid in london with my parents i think we were on the road with harrods. My dad had a backpack in and someone went up behind him, unzipped the small pocket at the back and took the atuff out but luckily most of the important stuff was in a different pouch.
Aww, I'm so sorry to hear Pete's story. I live near London and commute there Mon-Fri every week for work. It is a nice place to visit. If I had bumped into you and your wife I certainly would have stopped and had a friendly chat. Unfortunately like many large cities, there are pickpockets around, particularly in tourist hotshots, train stations and on the tube so you do need to be mindful of where you have stored your valuables. It's really bad luck that your wife got targeted whilst there. I am also very sorry that it sounds like the police were no help at all, not even compassionate. Please please believe Chris when he says there are a lot of nice friendly individuals in England.I very much hope he is able to change your mind about London in the future.
Almost got pickpocketed in London in 2003. Lady was unzipping my bag (which was on my front) while I was watching a street performer and I looked down and saw her hand which she quickly withdrew and disappeared off into the crowd. Saw tons of pickpockets in Rome who were absolute slick professionals. Never saw any in Paris or Munich.
ay yai yai ...am so sorry to hear what happened to you and your wife Pete , of all things to happen when you saved up for so long after getting married and moving to a new place...that horrible thief...what goes around comes around. Hope you'll have a better start to the coming new year...cheer up Pete!
I lived in the UK for 7 years and a lot of things changed negatively in my opinion but still British people are super friendly and I do love their sarcasm 😂
Honestly if I moved to a foreign country I think I'd want to live in a smaller city. Still something big, mind you, cosmopolitan, a lot to do, but not the biggest cities like London or Paris (or Tokyo). I think it would be easier to get to know the place. Maybe they just have a bad rep, but I've talked to people a few countries - England, France, Germany... I don't think any of them really recommend the capitals aside from specific tourist things.
Lived in London for a year, it was awful😂 moved to Maidstone for 3 years, not great either😅 finally happy in West Sussex. I guess you have to find your place and it's different for everyone ❤

Reminds me of a story from a different corner of the internet where a fellow took a similar approach to pickpockets but instead of a decoy wallet he cut a hole in his pocket and slipped his privates in there for the pickpocket to get a handful of 😆
@@Stephen-up3sd The one thing I wish Americans would change, language wise, is that.. >_
Hopefully Pete doesn't write off England as a whole, Chris should have been more upfront about it instead of romanticizing it.
alas the vibes got stolen mid way by some gyppo
It's almost like not having the legal right to defend yourself has consequences to the little people who don't have armed security.

I am not at all disappointed not to have daily videos. The ones that have come out have been awesome and have been enough! You should be proud.
Pete sounding shakey is jarring, I can imagine how something like that can break a person. I hope happy times are around the corner for you man
I'm glad Chris realises how good the quality of the work is. Because by now everybody else knows. I'm thinking that looking back, years later we will be still discussing about the effect these videos have and had. It's been a privilege
I love every episode American Pete is on. He is so much fun.
I think your best, and when you're at your best, is in the longer form 10-30 minute content :)
In other news.
Always enjoy seeing Pete shows up on your channel!
Great to have Pete in this podcast ! Pete & co. add so many positives vibes to your videos.
Keep your head up Yuki & Pete 🙏🏽
The latest videos have been INCREDIBLE! The quality is awesome and to produce those so quickly is an amazing achievement! Well done Chris!
Peace! 😇
Nah I love London. And that's coming from a Welsh. So that's saying something 😅
@@Pre1321well I mean with all the issues nyc is having the unlivable comment is kind of granted.
Not the Pete I expected but the Pete I appreciated
@@Patrick-y4d1zThat's just not true. I've had many great trips to London without an issue. Pete was just very unfortunate.
@@ThisAlbino
That's great for you, but it's still not a nice place to visit. I've been there hundreds of times as it's like 45 minutes by train and I live in Kent. London is a sh*thole and full of crime. And even if you ignored that part, it's too busy, expensive and just grimy.
@@Patrick-y4d1z That's unfortunate for you, but I've been lots of times and always enjoyed it without issue. So it's clearly not objective is it?
@@ThisAlbino
No, it is objectively better to go outside of London.
The tourist attractions will be better (subjective)
Things will be more affordable (objective)
Crime is less prevalent (objective)
Things will be less busy (objective)
There is literally no benefit to spending more than a couple of hours in London at most. And even that is questionable.
Your content is amazing. No need to rush, it's well worth the wait. Thank you and merry Xmas.
As a NYer, you never put a wallet in the back pocket for any reason ever
Queens native. Pickpocketing in general is pretty rare in NYC. I guess it could happen in busy places but I’ve never been hit or robbed in my life. Criminals are robbing CVS’s not individual people like they used to lol
In any big city pretty much anywhere. Except Japan probably.
@@protolexis Pickpockets normally target tourists not locals. Ive never been pickpocked in London or UK and dont know anyone who has
@@donywahlberg well it’s impossible to be aware of your surroundings in crowds. Like on a subway when you’re forced to stand super close to other people. A skilled thief can easily grab anything from your back pocket in a crammed subway car.

For anybody planning to go to London. That area is notorious for pickpockets, like many tourist areas in London. Also NEVER play the cup and ball trick that criminals play on Westminster Bridge! They are all part of the same gang and have lookouts on each end of the bridge watching for police. Stay safe people.
That's why I always use my pacsafe sling bag. Used it for years on my travels and its always on my back. Kudos to pacsafe!
Chris, I don't care that your new adventure is not up everyday. I am glad that you are doing this trip and uploading it every few day... I still can't keep up. Will get through them all one day. My husband and I watch it together and having an almost 2 year old doesn't give us much time. 😅
Pete, that sucks!

So uh do you two have a plan to avoid this happening again?

Maidstone! Practically on my doorstep in Rochester. Maybe we should do a fundraiser for Pete. London is no less safe than anywhere else but you always have to be aware of your surroundings. Hard to do when you are a tourist.

If you and Yuki ever visit, I'll treat you guys to a few pints to not sour your experience of the UK.😅
i was in Scottland last year, was so impressed by Edinburgh.
When I went to Piccadilly Circus, in certain areas you would see signs posted up that would say, "Beware of Pickpockets"
I am curious at what hotel Pete stayed at.
You can really see the exhaustion on Chris' face
So sorry to hear of Pete and Yuki's upsetting experience, as a British person I have to say Paris is fantastic and I also love it.
Poor Pete. Feel so bad for your honeymoon trip disaster. All places have good and bad things about them, for me an American I ended up in Spain. Of the 3 countries UK, France and Spain , Spain for me is the most livable. Look forward to seeing you in the Abroad in Japan episode.
I really enjoy the video podcast format! Awesome commitment as well, to put these up while you're on the go! Big up from Denmark👍
Nobody really NEEDS daily uploads, but in trying to do that, I feel like the stuff you've learned from this journey was well worth the added stress. Also nothing wrong with being able to stretch the releases by another few weeks, means you have plenty of content to bleed into the next year.
So sorry that happened Pete! Best of luck from now on!
Damn, that's horrible 😢! I love American Pete. He's My favorite sidekick.❤
I would reccomend that Pete visits Edinborough, it is in my opinion the nicest people in the UK and people are a lot more open to a chat with a stranger. So someone who is more extroverted like Pete would fit in really well.
I thought maybe I had misheard you say “daily videos” and I was going crazy. But the frequent videos are a treat all the same!
Please please believe Chris when he says there are a lot of nice friendly individuals in England.I very much hope he is able to change your mind about London in the future.
woow you have a podcast nice! and you have the best guest of all Petr.
Pete may like somewhere like Chester, York, Lincoln etc where they still have an old cobblestone town but not quite as busy and dangerous as London
Shropshires a lovely place, I'd be happy to show you around if you ever wanted to visit somewhere a bit less stressful than London!
Don't worry. We are happy just to see what you put out!⛩⛩⛩. Thanks for being sincere.

Capital cities all feel the same to me
