What I REALLY Think About Japanese Youtubers Reacting To My Videos

- A few years ago I made a video called 12 Things Not Do in Japan. In the last few months dozens of Japanese RUclipsrs have reacted to it. By popular request, here's my thoughts on it all, as well as my reaction to their reaction of my reaction.
Special thanks to George Japan for taking part!

NOTIFICATION SQUAD: Here we go then. This is it folks. The pinnacle of RUclips content. A British guy reacting to a Japanese guy reacting to a British guy! I'm not sure how we're ever going to top this. Though I hate to admit it, it was rather fun. Could this be the beginning of a REACT series?! I wouldn't count on it.
A special thanks to George Japan for taking part! I think he did a great job adding his personal experiences and cultural insights in his reaction video and it's worth a watch.

i heard u talk about it with him in the Abroad in Japan podcast
I like how one guy was like, "Nah, it's fine. Don't worry about this." And then the lady was like, "Yes. This is terrible. Never do this."
I think it varies on what area you're in. If you're near food stalls/places where you literally can't go and sit to eat like a busy shopping district, look around and see if others are also eating.
Generally, don't buy something from a convience store and then walk while eating.
They call it 'reading the air' but non Japanese struggle with this concept.
@@itsumotanoshimi We do? 😂 How'd you know? I seriously don't know if you're japanese, practicing ignorance without bothering about knowledge, or if you're a pick me weeaboo.
I also don't know which would be worse.
@@lethfuil I know because I've been teaching Japanese language and Culture to foreigners for over 35 years. DOH...How is that foot in mouth disease?
The biggest issue in social interaction and communication in Japan for foreigners is the inability to 'read the air'. Foreigners are always getting into trouble because of this and generally it is their lack of education and understanding of the Japanese culture.
Every culture has a way of 'reading the air' and unless you understand that culture very well...anyone will struggle with 'reading the air'. This is common logical knowledge everywhere in the world, it is hard to comprehend and understand anything when you do not have an education of that subject...
Weebs struggle with the concept, so they indulge further into cultural habits and over elaborate and enhance that habit or feature as they can't grasp the ability to 'read the air', so they compensate.
To attack me without just cause and reason just shows me you are an uneducated, disrespectful person that is one of those weebs that can't 'read the air'.
@@foxjm470 No I am not trying to say that and did not say that...
Don't put words in my mouth and go back and read the third paragraph.
I did not place any value on any culture high or low as this would be discrimination against the people to rate them as a lower culture than other cultures.
I said 'Every culture...' there is 'reading the air/room' it is part of all cultures and to understand how to 'read the air' is having knowledge of the culture...
who needs enemies when you got friends like Ryotoro
So... now... I react to this? 🤔

It's genuinely interesting to see how different people react to the video. Each person has their own experiences and you've chosen a good range of age and French people.
Here a year later to say that Yuya and Mrs Eats channels are good channels as well. Both the creators do very well videos.
instead of blowing your nose, you should try inhaling the tissue all the way through your nasal cavities. This way you don't have to worry about finding a trash can for the tissue. It will just disintegrate into your bloodstream.
Happened to me once (fell asleep with a cotton in my nose because of nosebleed), i woke up with a terrible migraine and it's only 5h later, in the plane back to Switzerland that I realized i had a thing stuck in my head... I blew my nose and I could feel the freaking cotton go down my nostril... It was disgusting but god did it feel satisfying.

Been following you on RUclips for few years, love your originality and humor. I do really think your editing and videography skills have gone up a lot over the years to almost a professional level. Keep up the good work 💪 big fan!
What’s funny about this is that George was actually incorrect by telling his audience that you were incorrect about the stuff you said on your video. Perhaps it’s because he’s a native and doesn’t pay attention to those sort of things, but while I was stationed with the Airforce in Japan, I actually encountered all of those things, I got thrown out of a restaurant because I was not native, I was constantly cursed out and told to stop walking and go sit in a bench or a fight of stairs and not eat while walking, and George saying this isn’t true, is a complete lie lol!!! He got tons of replies stating the same thing I just said on his video. In my case it took me about 7 months to be able to read and speak Japanese, and that’s when I realized what I was doing was against their cultural upbringing, so I changed my ways and lived a super dope 2 years over there, and currently am waiting to finish my inactive contract with the Airforce to relocate back to Japan since I loved every second of living there.

I wonder how that conversation went. Mr. Japan can you please react to my video, about you reacting to my video ?

I was subscribed to both of you guys so this made my entire day! I love it so much! Definitely one of my favorite videos. You guys should definitely collaborate more!
One time I requested and hugged a Japanese person who is an idol to me.
I was not the only one there who hugged him, but this memory still makes me feel ashamed and keeps me awake at night, even after several years it happened. I just decided that I am better left never ever hugging any humans in my entire life.
I don't think this is an issue, if they have an idol status in foreign countries they are also aware of their habbits, and she they might be uncomfortable but you asked they very much had a chance to deny you.
Like george said if they come to us they are also trying to fit in.
When George actually replied made me chuckle.

Already watched it. Very well done and educational, but I can understand how it gets fewer views because YT is often a break from reality where you just want to be entertained.
I'm already making my Reaction video to the Fukushima vis as we speak. YOU CAN'T STOP PROGRESS!
To late been there already as well as anyone with a brain I bet who it not stupid enough to be drawn away by thumbnails with flagrantly fake expressions of shock and red circles and more red circles or red arrows
I watched the Fukushima video when it was published and not just because I subscribe to the channel. I am genuinely interested in content of this type and I actively seek it out on RUclips.
Don't feel bad Chris, every Japanese RUclipsr is contractually obligated to react to Filthy Frank and Uncle Roger, plus one additional creator of their choice. It's an honor that they picked you!
Is always priceless when they watch content made by Georgie.
True, I even tried to recommend them to watch Calebcity videos. Most of them don't even finish the "People who think they can speak Japanese just because they watch anime" series.
I really appreciated how succinct you are with with your opinion and your good natured approach to the situation. "RUclips doesn't reward production value, it rewards human nature." I thoroughly enjoy the production value on Natsuki loosing his pants in your "I flew in Japan's most dangerous plane" video.
As a former teacher, I strove to teach that a good critique is different than an opinion. A good critique offers room for growth, regardless of the tone of the opinion. I don't understand the trend of reaction video's either.
I think the japanese are trying to overtly "debunk" what chris has said because they hear how ridiculous it sounds 🤣🤣🤣
OMG that Japanese "mmmm" when they don't approve but they're trying to figure out how to spin it politely LOL. Brings back memories of my time in Japan. And Chris's face while mocking George saying "mmm" killed me, bahahahahaha!!!! And for real... if you have to have a set place to eat and drink while walking in Japan, then, really, you can't eat and drink while walking in Japan lol.

@@wweeks 60mph is the minimum
@@wweeks What point are you attempting to make here?
I feel like the important thing to note is that Chris has experienced the stark contrast of life in the UK vs living in Japan. People in Japan reacting might disagree, but life in Japan may be all they’ve ever known. In comparison to life in the UK there might very well be a much greater emphasis on not blowing your nose in public or eating while walking that Chris noticed.
Yeah I came here to say this if it wasn't already said.
A perfect example is like when they start saying how plenty of people walk while eating, there's a special term for it, and there's like half a dozen places in the country where people sometimes do it without being judged and young people even drink Starbucks while walking.
To someone outside of Japan, that perspective is already culture-shock on its own. This guy just demonstrated the textbook definition of the exception that PROVES THE RULE.
Like I appreciate when Japanese RUclipsrs can step out of their own shoes and say things like "oh is that even more acceptable in other places in other places in the world?" rather than the closed-minded view that within their worldview there's already some walking while eating going on in Japan, so this Englishman doesn't know anything.
Well stated... 👍👍👍🌋
And No VOLCANO stuck in my head still, thanks Chris..
As a Brit, I'm more embarrassed when I CAN'T blow my nose in public. Someone actually had a pop at me for it once.
I think we find the incessant sniffles more rude and inconsiderate than the actual act of blowing the nose once or twice. Doesn't that piss Japanese people off?
I was also thinking people might be more “harsh” towards a foreign person than a native Japanese person who “breaks the rules” . You’re already under a lot of scrutiny and if you do the “wrong thing” then someone who’s already like 👀 might easily get more annoyed.
It's really easy to miss things about your own culture/language just because it's so natural to you you don't notice it and you may not have compared it to something else before. I used to have a roommate who didn't really speak English, but absolutely insisted to me that in English, our questions ended in a falling tone if there was a 'w' question word in there. I said no way, questions have a rising tone in the end. She made me listen to myself ask me a few questions before I realized she was right😅
How I feel about reaction videos is if someone has something valuable to add to the video. Like more information or a perspective that is different, I think they're perfectly fine because that's transformative.
I don't like reactors who just sit there and laugh and add nothing. I sit there and laugh at videos, I don't need to see someone else to do exactly what I did but the only difference is they are recording themselves. We all know the types.
So I prefer watching experts in a field reacting to a video. Like historians reacting to history, doctors reacting to medical videos etc because they have insights that expand on the points in the video or call out what is wrong and praise what is correct.
If someone has absolutely nothing to add to the video, that's not a reaction in my eyes, that's just trying to make easy money off someone else's hard work. Just my opinion of course.
I actually enjoy just watching people laugh to a video because I’m bad at expressing emotions and it feels weirdly liberating seeing someone express the emotions that I’m feeling. But I also understand that from a creator’s perspective these reactors are making easy cash by using a video they worked hard on.
Your videos are great! Very entertaining and have helped me understand a little bit more about Japan. Really appreciate all the work and effort you put into (most of) your videos 😜 👍

I agree! I was blown away watching the documentary. It clearly showed that it was a passion project.
100% think the Japanese perspective on what not to do in Japan is skewed because it's their country. They don't get looked at like they just crapped in the street if they cross at a red or eat while walking, etc. But foreigners occasionally do because we already stand out and so us not following the standards of politeness sticks out too. Whereas a Japanese not following them just looks like someone not overly concerned with the rules, a foreigner not following them is evidence that we are ignorant or impolite by those who want to judge others. Not all Japanese are so eager to judge foreigners of course, but there are scolds in every society.
yeah cant take foreigner opinion
if you cant take other complain, how do you improve your company, your self, country
I thought the same thing--I bet a local has very different experiences than a foreigner, and probably can get away with more without attracting negative attention. And personally, if I want to know what how I should behave as a foreigner in Japan, I'd probably rather hear from a foreigner in Japan.
It actually works the other way around... Foreigners in Japan often receive the "foreigner pass" whenever they do something stupid or unrespectful.
@@Seeking_Solace I live in Japan... sure, often foreigners get a pass because Japanese are generally tolerant and understand cultural differences. But that is not always the case, and like I said, since Japanese can immediately see you're foreign, some who are less forgiving of faux paus WILL be *more inclined* to judge you. That's why it's important to know what the general expectation is. You can still disregard it as some Japanese occasionally do, but you should do so knowing that you are likely to attract more attention for it and shouldn't expect not to be judged for it. I've gotten the look before and even comments (usually by older Japanese) and the further out of Tokyo you are, the more likely you are to get looks or comments - whether it's because you're not covered up enough or you're being loud on a train.
Every one has their own experience. Full disclosure, I’m Asian American and blended in physically. When I broke those rules, I’m embarrassed about it but Japanese strangers wouldn’t even care once they know I’m a foreigner. It’s not like there is an ethical or righteousness police to arrest you if you break the rules. My obvious foreign friends who were non-Asians would get the stares and reaction but it never became a scene. I asked my Japanese friends and locals about this and they said foreigners are making it a bigger deal than it needs to be. That’s why more Japanese are making “Reaction” video to tell Chris it’s not a big deal.
I’ve watch the original, I’ve watched Mrs Eats and George’s reaction, and now I’ve watched his reaction to their reaction of his reacting video.

I'm sure the only reason that Chris's Fukushima documentary didn't get as many views as other videos is that most people use RUclips for light entertainment. The people in the comments who watched it all seem to have been very moved by it. Chris's regular content is always entertaining. That documentary is something special, though, that will stay with you for a long time.
100% agreed. it's a shame he may be inclined not to produce videos like that as often due to the views, but it was such an insightful watch.

As a good British person should do. LOL
"Don't bother reacting to a video unless you have an original thought, or point, or perspective"
This is exactly why I'm not a fan of most reaction videos or channels. There are a handful of great videos that give helpful insight / information that's not discussed in the original video, but most end up going "haha that's funny" or "no that's wrong" but they never bother explaining why or adding anything. This doesn't only apply to Japanese react videos but a lot of general reaction videos. I remember seeing one reaction video on my recommended feed where the two people reacting didn't say anything except "wow that's crazy" once while chuckling maybe 2-3 times, then ended with "thanks for watching our reaction". I'm glad it was a short reaction video because it was a waste of time.
That aside, great video as always Chris!
i didnt read the whole thing but amen
You might want to check out Blind Wave. They do the most thought commentary in the reactions of all channels I've watched.
I also feel it's a bit lazy to just take someone else's video they probably spent weeks on just to react without any real input. As Chris stated if you're going to piggyback on someone else's idea at least put a spin on it to make it worthwile...or just make your own video.
With music video reactions you can really get away with it if you have the charisma, the only guy I watch often misses big details, but he’s energetic, makes good jokes and always has a positive attitude no matter the genre.
@@deet917 I get exactly what you say. I Should make an own RUclips Channel called, React to Abroad in Japan and react rewatching all videos without adding anything useful.
This was hella fun to watch, thanks for the upload mate.
For what it's worth, I watched the original video first, and it is actually the video that introduced me to this channel. That I was introduced to Mrs. Eats through her reaction vid just means I credit yours for getting me into the wonderful world of Japan-based RUclips. I don't usually watch reaction vids TBH, though this is one case where I was actually interested to know what actual Japanese people think. It seems most of them were respectful, in any case.
Freaking brilliant! What a lad!
I used watch your video few year ago
Gaijin Goombah! Love your work, dude!
Hey GG! 👋
PLEASE REACT TO GEORGE NOZUKA - TALK TO ME
AND I PROMISE YOU, ALL OF CANADA WILL SUBSCRIBE TO YOU BECAUSE HE IS JAPANESE HALF WHITE CANADIAN AND MICHAEL JACKSON, THE KING OF POP IS HIS ULTIMATE IDOL 🐷🇯🇵🇨🇦
Lad? More like thad
"Your face looks better in 480p" is going to be my new insult.
I watched your video first, then I was recommended George Japan's reaction video, and I watched it. Found both of them informative and entertaining. But so far, I've only watched a few of your videos. I would really like to watch your Fukushima documentary. Need to check it out next time.
When he started talking about watching a video in 480p, I checked my quality and it was 360p. 💀
Chris finally getting the clout he deserves.
Hahahaha
Thanks dad
hello young gojo satoru
It has always been Chris' dream to become an influencer 😉
Should probably check in with a doctor about that. Uric acid innit
I don't mind reaction videos; really have no issue with them, but the RUclips algorithm pushes them waaaaay too much. I see them plastered all over my home page. RUclips sees I watched a thing so it assumes I'm interested in seeing someone's reaction to that same thing. It's basically the modern day of version of reply girls, minus the cleavage on the thumbnail.
I'm all for reaction videos as I do get a kick out of watching people react to my own videos, but the RUclips higher ups do need to limit the amount of exposure they get. Push content that has effort put into it! Don't reward people for just sticking a camera in front of their face and reacting to someone else's hard work.
omg you were the first person I ever subscribed to, I remember begging my dad to help me set up a gmail account so I could subscribe after your Harry Potter review
I'm getting bombarded with them over the last week, they all have the same reactions really nothing controversial or critical.
FBE react: 👁️👄👁️
this
That's true overall. Watch a couple of videos on any subject, and suddenly the algorithm hits you with a wall of all of the same type of videos. Really annoying.
What a highly entertaining video!😊 thoroughly enjoyed! Also…. I remember watching the original subject mater and loved that as well! Thanks!
Yes I watched both George and Mrs. Eats reaction videos but only after having watched your original video 😊 Your original video was so good😜 that you've spawned an entire new video genre (RX to Abroad in Japan). You must be proud 👌
This is bringing me a level of joy I didn't think was possible.
George is like the most adorable thing ever. "please be kind to me" "No George that's not how the UK works." I almost passed out laughing, but so true Chris. 😂
[shows pictures of Gordon Ramsay, Simon Cowell and Piers Morgan]
@@CeruleanFilms Wait Gordon Ramsay is british?
@@eyexha yes... hes literally from scotland, yknow, one of the countries in britain. where the fuck did you think he's from, have you never heard him speak?
your humour is actually hilarious LMAOOO idk if its just a brit thing but I have been laughing nonstop
There was a retweet by Neil Gaiman this week: "I love and enjoy good critical writing, but I do like to remind them every now and then that, while we can do our job without them, they can't do theirs without us."
what does it have to do with this video?
@Mog X yup
In the quote "their job" = making reaction videos and "our job" = making the videos they are reacting too.
Reaction videos are a kind of critical writing.
Chris mocking the reaction trend while dressing up as a homeless man is exactly why I love him and his content.
we need more Berry Reaction
What do you mean homeless man ? That was poor Dave, who has been locked up for months and finally let out for a few minutes to help with this video 😉
I laughed my ass off watching your videos and they’re also very interesting! keep up the good work ❤️
The roasts on this are of epic proportions. Loved every second man, good video!
Haha...glad to see "George Japan" had a good sense of humor about it and was willing to do an appearance!
'a fraud in japan: destoryed with words and logic' made me cackle
I originally watched George Japans reaction video and wandered over to your channel and been here ever since, I also watched the original but can't lie George is just so cute that I can't not watch him 😍
For these edits alone your are one of the best RUclipsers rn fr
I like British sarcasm. They put truth to the dark aspects of things whilst making it entertaining.
Brits are good and funny also they good
@@user-ri5oc5rw5b Too bad they have to live in Britain
@@cooldud7071 yes, rain bad
Yeah their country is a shithole where it rains every day and the only beer they get served at the pub is guinness. Can't blame em
Careless memories?
After watching that Trash Taste episode with Chris, I can only say:
"He actually did it. The absolute mad lad!"
He’s running out of ideas
Brilliant . There is a lot of honesty here .
The first time I tried to exchange business cards with someone in Japan, I was trying to express my respect and gratitude, so I kept trying to go lower; but she kept then repositioning lower, and after the 3rd or 4th time or adjusting the positions of our relative cards, I reluctantly decided to concede and let her position her card below mine.To my mind, since I was the one that offered my card, I thought my card ought to be below hers. Now I just hope I didn't unintentionally offend her.
that is the arguably single stupidest thing i've ever heard, what a demeaning and stupid facet of japanese culture, the whole "demean yourself and inconvience yourself MASSIVELY to 'sHoW rEsPeCt" to people you literally don't f,cking know is completely absurd, being polite to someone and complimenting them and doing things like holding a door open for them or assisting them with something are how you show fking respect.... not "HURRRRR DURRRR REEEEE I HOLD MY CARD LOWER THAN U HOLD URS HURRR DURRRR"
You did
@@tomwhit1982I genuinenly think a Japanese person wont be offended by a foreigner not knowing how to hand business cards...
@@g76agi I think it's completely stupid being offended by something that is completely normal to 90% of the world.
And I think it's even more stupid to expect a foreigner to learn what you have been learning all your life in a week.
Im not talking about being an ass, Im talking about these ridiculous things where if you hold something higher you don't respect someone.
And yes, even now when I had it explained, it's still stupid. I would never expect a Japanese person to know habits/culture of my people, and thus it would
be ridiculous to be offended by it.
what is the point of this comment? you literally just said what i said, but in a (for some reason) agressive tone@@Qlicky
Japanese RUclipsrs: What we think about Abroad in Japan reacting to us reacting to him
It's Kame all the way down.
Abroad in Japan: What I think about Japanese RUclipsrs reacting to me reacting to Japanese RUclipsrs reacting to me.
So this is what it feels like to be in "The Twilight Zone" 😱😱😱
It's going to happen XD just give it a week
His friendship with Ryotoro is so pure, he can bully the shit out of him and their still best friends
Definitely great friends, maybe a mentor relationship.
Behind the scenes they are probably sumo wrestling the shit out of each other 🤪
Cos that's how men who are friends are. SJWs have forgotten that; nay, have tried to destroy it.
@uwu psykoweaz 😂
@uwu psykoweaz i mean he isn't wrong, sure it sucks that it's the first thing that came to their mind now, but yeah he isn't wrong and that also sucks that it's actually a thing.
After a few minutes in, I had to pause the video and watch George Japan's reaction video.
After finishing watching that and this video, I got to go watch your 12 things video so I can thumbs-up that video, too?
With your gift of gab, the "I resemble someone in Green Day, just pudgier" looks, the "I wonder what I can stir up in Japan" instinct and research ethics, I think you have found the right button to hit.
