- Japan can be a confusing place. In this video, I reveal the things that still confuse me, the strangest thing I've seen in the country, and the frustrating time I was refused an apartment. Also, is cheating common in Japan and who will win the sword battle between Natsuki and Ryotaro?

NOTIFICATION SQUAD: Natsuki and Ryotaro united at last! What more could you want from a video? For the next few weeks Abroad in Japan videos are going old school; which basically means it's just me in a room eating cup noodles. But do any of you share my childhood fear? And do you want to see Natsuki quit smoking?! Let me know in the comments.
And don't forget to check out the new Abroad in Japan website and steal some soundbites from the soundboard! Enjoy! (www.abroadinjapan.com/)
Stay safe guys
Natsuki should at LEAST Vape. Its a little better.
Love the content, keep it up
I don't think I would enjoy watching Natsuki try to quit smoking. Getting him in shape would be better.
Natsuki, take care of your health! Actually, Everybody stay healthy and safe!
tell natsuki we love him :)
When I visited Japan, my hotel room had a soap dispenser labelled "Soup"
Suffice to say, it did not taste like soup.
i guessed they got confused by the way we stuffed a random vowel into the middle of the word soap
That’s a damn shame.
Did you try their Miso Soap then?
Well kanji for hot water for chinese also mean soup....
@@izraa24 lots of pantothenic acid in them, yes?
"No one could ever bring himself to kill Natsuki" 2 minutes later, Natsuki dies.
Hahah, there's only one man who could do it.

@@AbroadinJapan Well, gotta be honest, Chris. I think we all thought one of you would end up killing the other.
It's how he dies is the pain killer... Ouch!

My favorite crazy Engrish in Japan is from when I went to a mountain in Kobe, and there was a sign for some kind of show. There was a note that was trying to say that when there is bad weather, the show will be canceled. But the sign just said "The weather stops."
Helping Natsuki to defeat his addiction is the greatest thing a friend could ask for...
"The Easy Way to Stop Smoking" by Allen Carr
I think at this point japan is just trolling us with their "engrish" because they know we love it soo much.
Fully agree! Shimokitazawa was awash with a sweatshirt featuring two Pomeranians in space helmets with the words, 'GIRL POWER!'. Blatant tourist bait :-D
"I don't think anyone could kill Natsuki."
*Ryotoro kills Natsuki
the only one who can defeat Natsuki is Natsuki.
Monika killed Natsuki.
YuriIsMyWaifu nice
Natsuki killed himself by Seppuku to the balls.
At least smoking can (and most likely will) kill him ^^
You're not alone. E.T. was scary as fuq to me growing up. That scene in the field, where he is screaming at the kid wrecked my sleep for years.
E.T. and Michael Jackson's Thriller TERRORIZED my childhood
No
Couldn't agree more about E.T. I always found him scary and creepy. The part where Elliot is wandering around the field at night with a flashlight and suddenly shines it on a frightened, screaming E.T.'s face was one of the most chilling moments of my childhood. And the way you can see his glowing heart thumping in his chest like the ghost bride from the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland? That's supposed to be cute? **Shudder**
I'm absolutely dying reading all of the E.T comments 😂😂😂
Nah
I quit smoking and it was hell but so worth it in the end, 7 years clear turning sixty two in 6 days.
Do you still get cravings
@@soufianvino7878 no, they used to come once in a while but not anymore. I also have winter to remind why not to start again
Congrats, man!
I unfortunately have no more than one like to give to you, but its given with the most sincere respect.
Well done, sir.
You would be able to spend hours wandering around the streets in Japan *no problem* !
@@YMangaka I have seen much of Japan through various RUclipsrs. I would enjoy it for sure, thank you.
I used to smoke for 17 years, and I was addicted to it. That breakfast that Natsuki enjoys is called a "Fisherman's Breakfast", and it is every smoker's breakfast. Smoking suppresses hunger, so it would obviously replace actual food for breakfast. I also used to smoke as much as Natsuki, roughly.
But, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I just woke up one day and said that I'm done smoking. However, you can't force a person to quit, because they will get pissed off, and they will resist quitting more. I certainly did. It is tough, man, but it's a decision that needs to be made by Natsuki.
A couple of things that helped me:
- Don't drink coffee or alcohol for about a month (both lead to temptation of smoking)
- Replace smoking with another activity (I replaced smoking with exercise)
- Keep your hands busy. Half of the anxiety that comes with quitting is that you need something to do with your hands.
- Don't make a big deal out of quitting (the more you focus on it, the more you crave). I had actually forgotten how long ago I had quit, but apparently I'm on my 8th month. Woohoo!
- Never say "I'll just have one". We all know what that means with booze, so it's obviously the same with smoking. One is never just one.
- And, lastly, avoid social gatherings for a while. They generally tempt you into smoking, as well.
Natsuki, if you want to quit, these are some things that helped me overcome an addiction that I thought I never would. I know that you can beat it, bud :) (if you want to, of course)
damn thanks for taking your time writing those out and I'm happy to hear your progress of not smoking! One question though, have you try or heard the chewing gums trick? I heard it also helps you since you keeping your mouth busy from smoking. Hopefully Natsuki can gradually lives a healthier life so I'm looking forward as well for the documentary if he ever going to make one.
@@KryKaizen It's my pleasure :) and thanks!
Gum works for some people, but I just ate some snacks, instead. Partnered with exercise, the food did my body good, considering that I was burning a lot of energy.
I completely agree! Unfortunately, smoking is an addiction. The amount of times I said "I know that smoking is bad, but I just enjoy it so much". It sucks letting something have that much power over you.
Natsuki will make the decision for himself, and he'll have good friends to support him. I hope they're prepared for cranky Natsuki, though. It's unavoidable.
"I'll only have one" are words from the devil
Also remembering that the craving goes away if you resist for like 5 minutes. That's what did it for me. It's in my mind, I resist and then it's gone for an hour. Repeat and it goes away for a longer time.
For all those who want to be non-smokers.... I always recommend “Easy Way to Stop Smoking” by Allen Carr. It’s been translated into about 26 languages, I don’t know if Japanese is included. The English audiobook is amazing. I did try to read it once, but I found the material stuck better with audio. It’s only a 6 hour listen. I sometimes go back and listen to specific chapters if I need too.
It’s a powerful book, and seriously.... I cannot recommend it enough.
I lived in Shibuya for about three years and totally fell in love with Japan and the Japanese people. I’ve enjoyed binge-watching your witty and entertaining videos, which bring back great memories. Thanks and hope you’re doing well.

ET scared the crap out of me when I was a child as well. You're not alone.
You are not alone. I was terrified of the dark up until midway through high-school, all because I watched et as a young child. I had frequent nightmares about it for years, it made it hard to get a good night of sleep in.
E.T. is definitely a monster, just imagine the phone bill when he phones home.
I think his calls are covered by the receiver that's why they never pick it up.
I don't know, a Ryotaro movie might be interesting. He's seems well dressed, well connected, and introduces you to new cuisine all the time. If I was going to Japan I would definitely want a friend or a guide like him.
but he wears fedoras
I was the 69th like.
It might be that he never had any true struggles in his life, and I think Chris wants to focus on more gritty issues. But I also think Ryotaro movie would be funny as hell.
Chris mentioned in an earlier video that Ryotaro is completely different when speaking in Japanese. Would like to see that.
He is also a Masco... He also KNOWS a Mascot Expert
I mean, my dad had a sticker of ET on his guitar case and it creeped me out so much.
I'm still a bit scared of him now and I'm a 35 year old FIREMAN 😂

A bit late to the posting here, but I just watched this and it hit home! My name is also Chris and I was afraid of ET all of my very early childhood.
When I was very young my Mom hung a poster of ET on the wall near the entrance to my room...Every night for 2 years I slept in fear, frozen in place, scared to look away from the wall.. I can still remember it vividly... damn ET.
One random beautiful day I came to the realization that I had the power to take the poster down... so I ripped that sucker down and life drastically changed (not even exaggerating!). So, ET is an evil ugly bastard... but I owe his demon-looking ass for helping realize I have the power to make changes in my life lol.
When you ripped it down, there was a hole behind the poster where E.T. lived!!

I've been terrified of ET since a young child also. It was made even worse when I was made go on the ET ride in Florida universal studios 4 years ago. I had a full blown panic attack and remain traumatized.
You are not alone Chris.
God help us.
Damm you guys are scared of ET? IM TERRIFIED OF THE FU**ING WALL-E MOVIE😭

When my parents rented ET when I was about 4, I hid behind the couch for an hour.
I'm so glad there are other people who don't like ET. My family can't understand how I don't find his earthworm like characteristics "cute".
I watched Nightmare on Elm Street as a kid,and thought it was scary-funny.I saw ET and that was NOT FUNNY,legitimately scary, didn't even watched whole thing, and i was couple years older!
I haven't watched Natsuki: The Movie, but seeing his face in the clip you showed of him talking about his breakfast of coffee and cigarettes, he did not look happy about it, and I honestly felt sadness for him. I think if you did your documentary and it helped him with his addiction, it could be the greatest thing anyone could do for a friend. So I vote DO IT!
You should watch it. It's great. Plus I totally agree. It would be amazing if Chris could get him to stop smoking.
I wanna throw this out there as somebody who chainsmoked and had even other worse addictions - maybe start with Nautsuki cutting down gradually. It's simple, but less traumatic.

That's sad.
Same
Still don't understand how native speakers always meas this up.
It's so easy and it's weird to see it get messed up all the time as a "non native english speaker".
This kind of mistake is much easier to make for native speakers, because they first learn how to speak and only several years later they learn how to write, essentially as a process of coding the speech into graphical symbols. So it's easy to mix up things that sound the same, even if their meanings are obviously different. Non-native speakers usually learn writing along with speaking and their minds associate foreign words with the words in their native languages, where they probably sound very different, and thus the risk for confusion is minimized.
It happens in other languages as well. My native language is Portuguese and we pronounce the words for "plus" and "but" ("mais" and "mas") in the same way, so a lot of people keep mixing those two up when writing. Obviously, for someone whose native language is English, it is impossible to accidentally swap "plus" for "but", so if you think of a sentence in English and translate it word for word to Portuguese in your mind, you won't be making this mistake that a lot of proficient Portuguese speakers make.
@Cameron I'm sorry but even for "quickly typing" it's not that hard to know the difference. I understand messing up a lot of words but your and you're must be the easiest grammar of the english language.
I would love to see a movie on Natsuki's struggle with smoking, especially if there's some real educational value.
Should atleast get him to swap over to vape. No reason to keep sucking on cancer sticks current year that coats everything in tar --someone who quit smoking for 10yrs after 8 yrs of addiction. Not to mention the major health detriments

Can relate on the ET. I was gifted an ET doll as a child one Christmas with a voice box that played his famous quotes from the movie. Complete with red cape and everything. The voice box would just never die, there was no visible off button either if I remember, or battery bit. I developed such a fear of this doll that my parents put it in the cupboard where it would wake me up a few times with a muffled ‘eeee....teeeee phone home’. I don’t know where it went - I was six at the time but I hope it stays away..
I hope it's melting in the depths of hell where it belongs.
I just noticed this, but E.T.'s head looks like an earbud. Now that is scary.

I totally understand about E.T.! Thought about it and you said it, hahah, your not the only one.
I am now going to do something here, that I have always hated when other people did 🤣
Dear Natsuki.
I am an old smoker. I smoked 40 cigarets a day for 20 years, and before that I smoked between 20 and 30 a day for 23 years. I started smoking at the tender age of 12.
Last year on Christmas eve I decided enough is enough. I put out my cigaret and threw away the rest of the packet. I have not smoked since. Still get these pangs where I look for a cigaret and it is HARD. But most of the time I do not think about it.
In my life I have tried many, many times to stop. But I never succeeded. I believe you need to be ready for it to work. It does not matter if your friends and familie are ready for you to stop, If YOU are not. How do you know, you are ready then? I do not have the faintest idea. All I can say is this, if and when you think. "I want to stop". Go for it. Maybe you are ready, maybe not. But at least your body will benefit from the days you succeeded in not smoking, or smoking less. It wont hurt. And one day, you may just hit the right moment like I did. And then you are a former smoker.
Good luck and stay safe
good luck further
😮😮😮
I was 2 packs a day for 30 years; I finally quit by tapering off nicotine using e-cigs for a few years ( in the time between when they were silly and when they became ridiculous). It probably won't work unless he is seriously ready to quit.
I would heartily agree with what you are saying. Being a pack a day currently for the last thirteen years, it takes a sea change to get up the gumption to quit, and believe me, I have tried.

And I truly never understood why none of my friends were terrified of him too.

ET and Alf. I hated Alf. He was more terrifying for me than ET.
As someone who lost their mother a almost 2 months ago to lung cancer from being a smoker of 47 years, if we it could get Natsuki to quit smoking, that would be wondrous.
As someone that started smoking from 12 to 27 years old and has quit for over a year now I can tell you that him quitting successfully will have nothing to do with us. It will be up to him. I don't mean to sound contrary though I do agree and I hope for everyone to be able to quit smoking as soon as they can.
I'm sorry for your loss, I hope you can find it in yourself to have a nice day and are able to spend time with someone you care about.
I don't want to speak for Natsuki, but I don't think he really is interested in stopping to smoke. I think he doesn't care about death, nor life. He often seems to be trapped, with no real goal in life. It's not like he can't enjoy things, but he takes life as it comes, I doubt he really has sth like a bucket list.
So I just wish him to find his place in life, to be happy, and if that is reached, healthy without smoking, to make that life enjoyable as long as possible.

Of course Risottoro wins. He's been trying to kill Chris for ages.
Also he have like 400 years or even more of swordsmanship experience
Been to Japan a zillion times. Really enjoying your videos. Sweet cleamy dreams. Dericious.
This had me laughing so hard!!! Thanks for the great videos!!
Are we sure he did not mean to say "Just is delicious" instead of "justice delicious"? The latter one sounds more fun though xD
Ongoing joke from when Ryotaro said Just As Good very quickly and it sounded like Justice Good. And the rest, my friends, is history
Funny thing is me and a friend had a similar joke about misspelling "just as planned" as "justice planned"
I guess it's so delicious that it brings justice to the world of gastronomy
OMG - Serious question??
I think he was trying to say "Just Delicious" but added an "is" unnecessarily. A pretty understandable mistake imo since he's not a native speaker
I still contend that he's saying "Just is delicious". Describe it in one word,,, that one word is 'delicious'. It JUST IS DELICIOUS.
You speak Natski 👏👏
dude I love you, you always crack me up
Man I'm watching this for the first time a year after the post lol it showed up on my RUclips feed like it's new
Also just found out I'm as old as you maybe a year younger
You are not alone...I was terrified of ET when I was a child. That scream of his is the stuff of nightmares.
Keep up the great content!
Yessss we passed 30K, already looking forward to #AskAbroad in May!
