    The coolest thing about durian trees are that the fruit grows in a cauliflorous manner, meaning they grow directly off the trunk (similar to jaboticaba). Super wild!

    The best durian I ever had was in 2019 when I visited Malaysia and went to Perhentian Islands. My inland flight from Kota Baru to Kuala Lumpur got delayed and I asked the taxi driver who took me from Kuala Besut to Kota Baru to take me on a food tour and specifically to eat durian. So this guy took me to this random shack in some Kampung on the roadside and this durian was the very best I ever had. Unfortunately I don't know which type it was. They simply called it "Kampung Durian". I was born to a german couple in Klang and lived in KL for the first nine years of my life so I practically grew up eating these things.

      Kampung durian are named as such that they are mixed or unknown variety. The taste varies greatly from tree to tree, location and weather pattern.
      They are also invariably cheaper and popular with durian aficionados due to the different and variable taste.

    In the future, you may want to try batoning. So what you do is you can carefully place your blade where you want it, and then give it a good tap on the blades spine with something like a rubber mallet or something of wood. Basically anything that won't damage your knife. It's a lot more accurate than trying to whack the blade where you want it. For most things it doesn't really matter, but if you wanted to be surgical, it's a helpful technique.

    This was very educational. Had no idea there were varieties, but why would there not be, just never thought of it. Never seen any of this in Montreal, Canada, but also never looked for it. Your reviews and precision on taste/scales is always impressive. So I guess in countries where this is grown, one chooses variety of choice like we choose our apples. Tfs.

    • @yorkiesweetpea23
      @yorkiesweetpea23 2 года назад +1

      @LyLyMongeon
      Yes, there are plenty enough in Montreal 😁! Every summer they're sold at Asian specialty grocery stores. And some T&T carries frozen ones in freezers all year around.
      But in Montreal, it is quite difficult to find a store that sells the fresh exported Durians (never been frozen). Because they come & go so quickly! You gotta know someone, especially in the Vietnamese community, to find out which store sells fresh Durian.
      Then, they will tell you the date of the next shipment. Expensive getting these fresh ones though. They are fresh from Malaysia or Thailand, straight to Canada in under 24 hrs. Not as expensive as their weight in gold 😂 but it's still quite steep getting one of the exported fresh.
      The Frozen ones are good, in Vancouver BC, the price for previously frozen Durians are around $6.99 a lb. And less if it's still frozen solid in a freezer.

People complain that they smell bad...Honestly I Do Not Get That at All. The Fruit is unique and delicious. And Yes the outside is dangerous and very spiky sharp. So take great caution. Also I heard not to eat Durian With alcoholic beverages because the fruit suppresses the enzyme that metabolizes alcohol.

      Heh, even the frozen trays vary a lot. Sometimes they are more vegetal and green, sometimes super ripe, sometimes more oniony, sometimes more custardy. Even within frozen monthong there is a ton of variation based on ripeness. I have long disagreed with Jared on the frozen mass market monthong, at least in the lobe/tray form. It really depends on who packed it and the quality of what they packed. The kind in the hard plastic box is generally the best option for frozen mass market, IMO, but even then, it is kind of a lottery whether you get "just good enough" or "excellent".

    I used to go to a regular event in Calgary that for years was held a couple blocks from a large Asian supermarket. Once I could have bought a whole frozen durian for CDN$0.19 a pound (or was it a kg?) because they had too many, but... no. Bought a small package of frozen durian innards that was very disappointing in flavor if adequately smelly.

    With one being something innocent like a strawberry, three a blackberry, six a grapefruit and nine a bitter almond seed or something? Dunno what a ten is.

    The ones that are kept frozen in the US are legit nasty asf. I wish I could try a fresh durian that is naturally ripened on the tree and not picked so early.

    There's too big of a difference, between eating a fresh Durian, that's never been frozen, vs ones that have been frozen.
    In Canada, we do have Supermarkets that carry fresh Durian, during the right season. They were dropped from trees just under 24 hrs ago & exported here into Canada.
    Each summer, customers would pre-order and literally stand there waiting lol.
    The not so great part is the price for these fresh Durians though 🤣.
    A big Musang King can go for as much as $500/ each Canadian dollars. But usually they averaged at around $250. each Durian.

    I didn't know there were multiple types of durian. I'd only had the stuff from the asian markets, and since I hate/loathe/despise onion... Let's just say I wasn't impressed. Are you saying the D13 doesn't have ANY onion taste?

    It's unfortunate how expensive those durians are to order. If I ever travel to Asia, I'll be sure to give it a try.

    Frozen whole Durian for only $2.49 a lb??? I paid $11.99 a lb at my local Asian food store! I wish the store you have in your video clip had a location in my area.
