    She's so passionate about durian that it makes us want to support her. You can tell from the packaging, descriptions, etc... That she is more about spreading her passion than anything else.
    Would have given it a go if the quarantine law weren't so tight in Western Australia. Might as well travel directly to south East Asia ...

    That's so fascinating that she actually test them herself before sending it, I find the quality of fruit to be quite low in general, especially exported fruit, so great job there.
    I've only had frozen packaged durian from asian stores where I live (but I have 2 stores just like 50 meters away, I guess the universe wanted me to have durian :-D) and I've had both above avarage and bad durian from there. They also sold fresh durian when in season and I found it to be way too unripe for my taste, the frozen one was usually much better because it was picked much more ripe.

    There’s a reason they call it THE KING OF FRUIT.
    I thought it was gross when I first had it in Vietnam, but afterwards I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Best I’ve ever had was in western Sumatra, there was an entire street of durian, different guys with huge piles of them. That street was BUMPIN, tons of people riding up on scooters or sitting in plastic chairs eating right there. It was pure funky heaven.

    Living in Singapore at the moment. Was in the Chinatown market area on the weekend and thought it was time to have some durian, so I did. I like durian. It's sweet, or can be. It's got a completely unique flavor, or rather, flavors and it's hard to get the smell out of your beard. When it's good it's very good, but when it's bad - well... ya... baked trash, gym socks and burnt onions etc. FUN!
    PS. It's always amusing - people stare at me while I'm enjoying the durian. There's this look of wonder bordering on disbelief in the faces of some onlookers. :)

    My first frozen durian was a mornthong and I selected it very carefully, I was told to look for one that smelled like fresh paint. The taste was amazing on the very first one, like the best coffee liqueur pudding imaginable. My family did not like the smell, and one section of it actually tasted bad, but the other sections all tasted amazing. I wound up getting 6 more Over a few weeks, unfortunately 2 were bad, and one was underripe and I took those back. The 3 good ones though were outstanding and I shared some with coworkers who actually liked them pretty universally. Since then I haven’t gotten more because they are very expensive and I only pick good ones 50% of the time. I’m actually pretty good at picking cherimoyas which are similarly priced and more reliably good though not as good as a great durian mostly, though I have had some exceptional cherimoyas that are on par with the best durian I had

I'm adventurous in what I'll try to eat and drink. I love sulphured molasses so I might like the sulfur flavor. i don't mind onions I despise egg custard, I love caramel, I love most berries. My experience with supermarket durian was one of creaminess, onion, melon, popcorn and maybe a hint of garlic. It wasn't my thing but I didn't absolutely hate it, either, and I don't think that a taste for egg custard is necessary. I'd definitely recommend trying it.

    Hey Jared, this is off topic but you should try the new Cosmic Apple.
    Supposedly it lasts a year in the fridge.
    It tastes sweet and tart like a honeycrisp, with the same crisp, refreshing bite. It reminds me of a combination of Oppal and the aforementioned Honeycrisp. Oppals are my favorite apple.
    I think it's also low in polyphenol oxidase so doesn't brown when you cut it, but I'm not 100%, I suspect that that's why it lasts so long. This is why Oppals don't brown after cutting, either.
    If you can't find them, I'll send you a couple since they are sold out here. Just keep me posted.

      If you purchase that try freezing some of it. The smell would be like butane once frozen, but it'll increase the sweet flavor profile and decreases the other ones. And, it's like eating ice cream too since the frozen one tastes entirely different when not frozen.

    70 for the box and 40 for shipping in the USA is an awesome price in my opinion. A lot of work went into this.
    I love durian. Had a great experience the first time I had it but I ate too much and my face turned really red, heart elevated, and I felt drunk. Much like having too many energy drinks at once. Decades ago I placed the seed from a store bought, frozen durian in soil. To my surprise it germinated and I had a small durian tree growing indoors. Unfortunately I forgot to water it during a move so it subsequently died. The bark had a deep red color. I've tried germinating durian seed many times since then but had no luck. My guess is that durians are irradiated before coming to America and the seed I was able to germinate was a lucky survivor. I wish I had seen your video earlier so I can tell you to try germinating the seeds that you got. Maybe next time you get fresh durian, save the seed and try germinating it.

    • @JessHull
      @JessHull 4 года назад

      @@madscientistshusta Yeah it makes a wonderful shake fruit and it goes great with lots of other fruits since its so rich and fatty. Although I do make it with just durian a lot too. but when I do add other fruit I usually make mine with bananas. Or fresh pineapple as well. You can used canned pineapple but it doesn't taste as good. So how I make mine is pretty simple just lots of durian, a cup of milk (and I use all kinds of milks whatever I have on hand, it could be almond, soy, cow or goats) a cup of crushed ice, and then blend until smooth. Sometimes if the fruits aren't that sweet I'll add a teaspoon of simple syrup, but that's to needed most of the time as I like to use over ripe bananas and those are usually super sweet.

Some are pretty unripe, others are very ripe, even in the same brand or same package sometimes. Of course there is not the kind of variety available as something like this box, but I think maybe you got unlucky with your Asian store grocery durian or had a poor brand. The kind in plastic boxes I've had better luck than the ones in bags. Anyway, could make a video out of it at least, even if you wind up still hating them all.

    I was so excited that I was able to find fresh durian at a local Asian market here in San Diego (and paid an arm and a leg for it). I’m an adventurous fruit eater and eggy custards are my favorite thing in the world so I thought I hit the jackpot! It was SO AWFUL. It was the most potent gasoline and onion flavor I could even imagine! It smelled great before I cut into it but as soon as oxygen hit the flesh it was like a stink bomb went off. I tried so hard to power through a couple of bites but even I had to admit it was the worst thing I’d ever tasted. Maybe it was a bad one... I don’t know but goddamn it was a nightmare of smells and the flavor lingered for over an hour in my mouth. If I’m ever in a place where it’s grow locally I’ll give it one more shot, but i’m starting to think it’s one of those “cilantro” type things where certain people just can’t taste the terribleness that the rest of us can!

    • @AlbinoAxolotl
      @AlbinoAxolotl 4 года назад

      jrpapi5 Sorry I should have been clearer about that- apparently some people have a genetic component that makes cilantro taste soapy and awful to them, while most of the population taste the the typical, palatable “herby-ness” that it’s know for. It’s just a total difference in how their taste buds perceive the flavor which explains why some people love it and some absolutely can’t stand it! In my mind durian must have a similar component because, unless I’ve always gotten bad durian, I can’t wrap my mind around how anyone would enjoy it! Haha.

      To me cantalope smells exactly like a trash dump. I was in my fifties before I could eat any of it at all. I can eat it now in order not to be rude but detest the aroma. I've never met anyone else that thinks it smells like garbage but it really does to me, all of it. It was one of my family's favorite fruits and my grandfather used to grow several varieties and my mother was always buying them. I would have to take the rinds out and put them in the trash can because they made the kitchen smell so terrible if they were in the kitchen trash.
