Musang King Durian: The BEST Durian In The World!

  • Combat Durian is a reputable durian dealer in Singapore, where you’ll find amazing Musang King durians. Get more details on my Singapore food guide: migrationology.com/2016/01/sin...
    Compared to other foods I ate in Singapore, durian is a little bit different… it’s the only all natural, uncooked, and unprepared, right off the tree delicacy I had. The reason I had to include durian on my must eat list of foods is not only because it’s the King of Fruit and such an amazing natural creation, but also because I’m a bit addicted to durian and I can’t resist any opportunity to eat it.
    Combat Durian - Known as Combat Durian because they want you to “come back,” or rather after eating one of their durians you’ll want to come back immediately - or just sleep for a little while and wake up and eat another durian. I showed up in the mid-afternoon, and the durian was all on display and ready to be sold. One of the varieties of durian that Combat is most well known for is Musang King, which in Chinese is called Mao Shan Wang, and in English is called Cat Mountain King. The type of durian is originally from Malaysia, and even the durians sold at Combat are grown in Malaysia on the private farm of the owner of the shop.
    Ying and I chose a nice almost 2 kilo durian, which cost me a total of $32 SGD, which is very expensive for a fruit, but after eating it, I can tell you it was definitely worth every dollar. After choosing our fruit and cutting it up, we took a seat at one of the red tables and began to feast.
    The lumps of the Musang King durian were very yellow, like butter, and had a waxy shiny skin on each piece. The fruit was perfectly ripe, and it was one of the creamiest things I’ve ever had in my life - like whipped cream, sweet like honey, and with a tinge of a bitterness to contrast it all. It was indeed probably the best durian I’ve ever had in my life. Ying and I sat there in almost near silence, apart from lots of groaning, and finishing off our Mao Shan Wang. The final bite was a little bitter sweet, knowing it was the end, but knowing that I had just consumed one of the best durians I had ever eaten in my life.
    Combat Durian
    Address: 249 Balestier Rd, Singapore
    Open hours: 12 pm - 12 am midnight daily
    Prices: For a Mao Shan Wang the price was $20 SGD per kg, and ours cost a total of $32 SGD
    How to get there: The closest MRT station in Novena, and I walked from there in about 15 minutes. But alternatively you can jump on bus #154.

    Love Musang King.. am surprise it is featured in Singapore. Singapore has no durian orchard and nearly all their fruits (durians, rambutans, mangoesteen, guava etc) and vegetables come from Malaysia. You can get all these at a fraction of what you pay in Singapore.

      The thing is most durians that are imported to Europe, North America, etc are frozen. These durians are plucked before ripe as ripe durian will not last more than 3-4 days after falling off their trees.

    • @foxley95
      @foxley95 5 лет назад +41

      Westerners got an old frozen one that spoil quickly, thats why they would never know the real value of durian unless they come to southeast asia and try it themselves. Weird seeing westerners dislike durian when they can tolerate maggot and blue cheese

    Musang King durian originated in a place called Sungai Klau, Raub. The creator Ah Fook Gor grafted his 1st Musang King varient 33 years ago. The best Musang Kings are within the 1st to 3rd generation grafting which could only be found in Raub. Subsequent generations grown in other areas are diluted and the MK taste is diluted.

    Best foodgasm I've ever seen. Our local oriental store has frozen peeled durian. The stuff smells like rotten onions, but has an amazing creamy sweetness like nothing else I know of. You have to get past the smell to enjoy it. It's just about the only thing I have ever seen make Andrew Zimmern gag, which greatly surprised me, cause I have seen him eat stuff that's much worse. +Wayne Warmack you have to come to southeast Asia to try fresh durians here.
      Thailand gives you crisp, light and sweet durians. Malaysia gives you robust custardy buttery durians.
      Where does your frozen durian come from? What cultivar is it?
      In any case, you really have to come to Singapore / Malaysia to try the Musang King.

    I was searching youtube for durian videos for durian reviews in Malaysia and i came across this from Mark. Yes!!! I was never a durian craze/enthusiast before. I do eat durian but i don’t go crazy about it when come durian season. Now is durian season all over Malaysia. A week ago i tasted a variety in my hometown in Kedah called 101 or is it IOI idk and i was hooked!!! It was soooo heavenly delicious, not as bitter as Musang King. I returned to KL just last weekend to have another durian session to again devour IOI and Udang Merah. Both are soo good and now i am planning my third durian session in a span of 2 weeks. God, forgive my indulgence.
    Most fruits are well, fruits. Sweet or sour.
    Durian is a different league. It’s a fruit that is savoury. It’s a combination of sweet, creamy, bitter, silky in texture, fragrant. It is really superior than all other fruits.

  • @Seabass-a
    @Seabass-a 4 года назад +6

    I ate durian for the first time in Ubud, Bali. It was an incredible experience. Durian is like all the best savory and sweet foods in one. Butter, custard, cheese, banana, mango, with a hint of fresh fish. I ate it every chance I got after that. I'm so sad I can only find it frozen in the States.

It is seasonal... durian is always available, but the price is mark up so high when not in season.. literally 5@10 dolars more per kg. come during seasons, and you can have the best of the best. fully ripe , the durian is at the best condition when it drops on its own weight.. so , go nuts...

      most durians in Singapore imported from Malaysia and some from Thailand. only buy Malaysia's durians cos they are the best.
      Malaysia will only handpick the best and ship to Singapore, that's where most of their profit come from. can be assured that most durian sold in Singapore are the best.
      that's explains the high price but it's totally worth it.

      Me too! I saw Jessica Chastain on Fallon and she brought one to the show, wore gloves, and she looked like she was in ecstasy eating too! She did however say it's a VERY acquired taste. Supposed to be a bit garlicky? I really wish I knew where to get a good one in the Philadelphia area.

    • @fez877
      @fez877 7 лет назад +2

      It's like what Mark described in this video. Creamy, buttery, sweet and a slight hint of bitterness. Yes, it's an acquired taste, not all Singaporean/Malaysian love the taste.
      It's like blue cheese, you either love or hate it. I doubt you could find durian of this quality in US. You need to travel to Singapore and try it.

    • @NIKINIKI_9
      @NIKINIKI_9 7 лет назад

      It is exactly as jessica had said, "a very acquired taste'. even some locals have not yet to embrace the loveliness of durians, but once you do, you'll be hooked. But if you do one day come across it, do keep an extremely open mind, and nose....lol...pinch your nose if you have to, and let your taste buds do its job.

    Always enjoy seeing a cucasian who enjoys durian. This looks like good quality durian.
    Too many times I see people who knows nothing about durian walking into a shop to buy durian, only to later complain how horrible the fruit was. Im pretty sure the seller sold the worst fruit he had in stock to him.
