So I just bought my first Durian. I’m in Texas by the way. The first smell from it was a faint melon like sweet smell that I thought was wonderful. Going home it did have a bit more of a wafting smell like that of a mild fart & gym socks but nothing really bothersome, at least to me. It never lost that sweet smell though. When I opened it, it smelled the same to me & the fruit was nice & soft. The taste was unique but not bad. Something I could definitely get used to. It tasted like lightly sweet honeydew melon with a hint of vanilla, a hint of avocado with a mellow oniony taste. Maybe some people are just more sensitive to these smells but me, I’m just fine with durian. I think they ought to go ahead & sell it in regular grocery stores. Durian is definitely a fruit that seems extremely versatile & could be used in sweet or savory dishes.

@ Yvette C It's not that one was more fresh then the other, but rather different breeds of Durian 😁. Some breeds are more rubbery, some are more watery, and the best ones are of course, creamy without fiber strings 😍. I still get frozen ones whenever its not in Season. But when there's the choice between frozen or fresh... 🤯 Fresh is just... beyond belief! No comparison! My personal fav, are the Mon Thong types. But but, I haven't tried every different kind/breed yet! For example: I have yet to try the $500/per Durian ones; the "Musang King". 🤤🤤 One day, one day I will sink my teeth into one of those extra rich creamy delicious Musang King".
Watching this and just remembered Mark made a short video about tackling Durian about 10 years ago and also few other videos as well about how he loved Durian. Durian is one of the tastiest fruits indeed.

For those of you who can't stand the smell of durian but want to enjoy it, IT IS POSSIBLE -- but the circumstances are a little difficult to arrange! I tried durian on a couple of trips to Thailand. Each time I was nearly physically ill because of the overpowering, utterly-nauseating smell - which is so bad for the circa 50% of people who can't stand it, that it is enough to make you (sorry) be actually sick if you eat it. If you've managed to swallow some, don't think you're out of the woods - the smell will come back up out of your stomach and it's even worse! I was determined to enjoy this fruit! It wasn't going to get the better of me! I want to try - and enjoy - every culture's foods. Solution: One year I temporarily lost my sense of smell because of a bad case of the flu. Opportunity! As soon as I was sufficiently recovered to stagger out of bed, I went straight to Chinatown (Thank goodness it was durian season!) and bought fresh durian. I was able to eat a whole segment! (I started VERY cautiously!) The texture was wonderful! Mark's descriptions of texture and taste are very articulate - and accurate, in my experience. It was really filling - like eating two huge bananas - with a very warming sensation in the stomach similar to when you've had a big, very spicy, meal. It would have been a Mon Thong (it's pretty much the only durian available in London.) It tasted of something like banana and custard, with - near the point of the fruit where each segment is attached - a slight bitter taste. The warming, filling sensation was excellent. DON'T EAT TOO MUCH. I did the next year and it gave me a really bad stomach ache in the evening! So, two years in a row when I had flu with a loss of smell, I rushed to eat durian while I could without smelling it! After that, I was able to ENJOY eating it with my sense of smell fully working! I absolutely love it and now, I even love the smell - and it doesn't have the nauseating effect on me in the slightest... but my husband won't permit it in the house! In London, I was made to stand outside on the balcony - with the door firmly closed! (He actually locked me out! :)) NB: As a beginner, holding my nose didn't stop the stomach-churning smell. The only way I succeeded was having actually LOST my sense of smell. You could try (I haven't done this) eating some extremely strong mints and then immediately trying durian. That might work but, only have a tiny amount if you are in the 50% of people who can't stand the smell, or it could produce a very nasty case of it coming straight back up as soon as the mint wears off :( Also, don't eat more than a couple of segments in a day if you're inexperienced: it really can be too much of a good thing! It is completely worth persevering! Durian in London's Chinatown supermarkets (two in Gerrard Street: Loon Fung and New Loon Moon) was available in 2019 (pre-COVID-19) in containers in the fridge for £15 (US$18) for a container of two/three segments of Mon Thong. Not cheap but, amazing! A whole durian cost > £30. Durian can be found year-round but is in season May - September. Can't get to Thailand? If you can get to London, you can eat fresh durian! Isn't Mark Wiens absolutely amazing? I sit here in our little 16th century cottage in the middle of the English countryside, surrounded by rolling green hills of sheep and wildlife - and only English food available; and I can watch Mark experiencing every food the whole world has to offer, enjoying - with huge respect and humility - each culture he encounters. What a privilege! Thank you so much, Mark! It is an honour to watch the friendship and respect with which you treat your fellow human beings.
Hi sir I would like to recommended for you to try Musang King or red prawn from Malaysia. For me Musang King nearlly premium yellow, not smelly, creamy but not sticky, sweet, bitter a bit, after you try Musang king I am sure you will love to eat durian after this.

I totally agree! I used to hate it because in Australia we only have frozen imported old ones so what I was eating was Durians smell magnified 100x (in a bad way). Then one day I tried a fresh one (not frozen) & it changed my life 😆. So rich, sweet, custard like smell was also very strong but sweet. Now I love the stuff 👌
For me the land of Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia are the place where heaven of durian were exists Thank God this King of fruit is a gift to us durian lovers
@@MarkAbroad back then, all monthong were imported from thailand, but due to the similar climate, now local farmers starting to grow their own monthong and they taste pretty similar to the imported one, except they're fresher since they are farmed locally.

Hey Mark, I'm not sure if you've mentioned but if the durian came from an unfamiliar source, it's better to open just one pod at a time by surgically opening one section only without damaging the others. This way, if the fruit turns out to be underripe, as long as you scrape off the flesh from that opened section and keep the rest intact and unpunctured, the rest will still continue to ripen as if it's unopened. So, the next day, I'll open one, depending on how unripe the previous section was. If the first one was totally hard, for instance, I'd probably give it 2 more days atleast til the next opening. If it's slightly soft but not quite ripe, then I'd give the next section a day til opening. If a durian had 4 sections, for example, I could take 4 days to open it entirely just to get the perfect ripeness. I wish I knew this before because I've wasted soooo many durians in the past because I ended up opening the entire fruit in one shot when it was still unripe. THis method is better than what I used to do which was opening by slicing a small triangle to "poke" inside for ripeness and replacing the sliced off rind thinking that section and the rest will continue to ripen which I think doesnt really happen because that opened section rots and contaminates the rest of the sections.

Whilst in queue to pay for my shopping in John Lewis Oxford Street, basement, everyone had to leave as they thought 'some leak coming from above'! Earlier on same store different level, in the lift, a well heeled moustached man turned to his son in school uniform asking 'have you stood on something, son'!!! On Piccadilly line, sitting/facing me, was a long haired girl who kept lifting her hair on both sides to smell, made a face and walked off!!! Though they were 3 X wrapped/in sealed shopping trolley, smell permeated. Holiday on Tioman island in 1994, enjoying BBQ from the restaurant when suddenly waiters ran out, we thought where is 'the fire'!! They ran up the hill cos durians were falling from strong winds!! I love durian. Right now is the season in Laos and I have just eat it today. Absolutely delicious and the flavour is just wonderful, intense and magical... without doubt, it is the king of fruits 😋 I love it.

The best durian ever i got from a market hall in Hongkong. The seller took 3 minutes to knock on his fruits and smell them. Then he choosed one and opened it up. About 1.5kg of fruit core!! I eated it as lunch and dinner all day. The second best i got on a fruit stand sitting alone one a street in Chaweng, Koh Samui, Thailand. His durians were much smaller (like in this video) and really sweet and tasty. Both told me, if a durian stinks, it's too old. It should only have a faint smell of smelly durians. Amazing fruit :)
I love the custardy texture and the sweetness that comes with Durian. I really don't mind the smell, especially with ripe durian. Love them, especially making a nice smoothie out of them.

Here in the Philippines, there is a variety of fruit we call Marang which is like the cross between Durian and Jackfruit. It is also smelly and taste a bit like durian but the peal is similar to jackfruit.
In our family, im the only one who eats durian. Everyone hates it because of its smell and weird taste. But i love it. Its creamy and sweet i cant get enough of it. I envy u though u can taste that diff kinds of durian. Thanks for sharing. Love from Bohol Philippines.

Hi Grey Phantome, if you live near one of the cities with a Chinatown, it would be worth checking to see if they have fresh durian in any Chinese supermarkets like here in the UK - unless your department of agriculture and food bans its import. Good luck!

There are 2 more durians that you should try, They grow in Uttaradit, they are called หลงลับแล and หลินลับแล. Small shape, high price but they said they are the best Durian. Smell like flower :)

The first time I tasted Phuangmanee was in Betong about 4 years ago. It only costed me 50 BHT per kilo. What a treat! Can't wait to go there again during durian season to enjoy the durians.

Hi Mark, thank you for this very interesting video from you. Most happy to see the joy in your face and expression when you eat your durians. May I suggest if you have a chance do come over to Malaysia and you will have the opportunity to try lots and lots of durians. In Malaysia, the durians are collected when they are ripe and it drops to the ground. The taste and texture will be slightly different then if it is cut while the fruit is hanging in the tree. However in Thailand you can also try to ask and see if you can get durians which naturally ripens and fall by itself just like what we are used to in Malaysia. You might be pleasantly surprise . Give it a go.

I love bannanas, but when they're not ripe, some varieties too, they taste gross. Completely different to one that is ripe and a nice variety. Same with all fruits. An acquired taste. I was uncertain about it for a while then one day I fell in love with it. The taste, smell and texture is unlike anything else. I also feel great afterwards

The best durian ever i got from a market hall in Hongkong. The seller took 3 minutes to knock on his fruits and smell them. Then he choosed one and opened it up. About 1.5kg of fruit core!! I eated it as lunch and dinner all day. The second best i got on a fruit stand sitting alone one a street in Chaweng, Koh Samui, Thailand. His durians were much smaller (like in this video) and really sweet and tasty. Both told me, if a durian stinks, it's too old. It should only have a faint smell of smelly durians. Amazing fruit :)

I love the custardy texture and the sweetness that comes with Durian. I really don't mind the smell, especially with ripe durian. Love them, especially making a nice smoothie out of them.
They're also yummy in baking to make either cookies or a cake.
I can see why people don’t like the smell, but personal I like the smell and when a family member order some I can instantly smell it from my room

Ooh I love durian ! The best variety I have tried was in Malaysia, Musa King -I think that’s what it was called, it was creamy, nutty , almost like creme brulee🧡💛!

Here in the Philippines, there is a variety of fruit we call Marang which is like the cross between Durian and Jackfruit. It is also smelly and taste a bit like durian but the peal is similar to jackfruit.

In our family, im the only one who eats durian. Everyone hates it because of its smell and weird taste. But i love it. Its creamy and sweet i cant get enough of it. I envy u though u can taste that diff kinds of durian. Thanks for sharing. Love from Bohol Philippines.

Hi Grey Phantome, if you live near one of the cities with a Chinatown, it would be worth checking to see if they have fresh durian in any Chinese supermarkets like here in the UK - unless your department of agriculture and food bans its import. Good luck!

There are 2 more durians that you should try, They grow in Uttaradit, they are called หลงลับแล and หลินลับแล.
Small shape, high price but they said they are the best Durian. Smell like flower :)

The first time I tasted Phuangmanee was in Betong about 4 years ago. It only costed me 50 BHT per kilo. What a treat! Can't wait to go there again during durian season to enjoy the durians.

Hi Mark, thank you for this very interesting video from you. Most happy to see the joy in your face and expression when you eat your durians. May I suggest if you have a chance do come over to Malaysia and you will have the opportunity to try lots and lots of durians. In Malaysia, the durians are collected when they are ripe and it drops to the ground. The taste and texture will be slightly different then if it is cut while the fruit is hanging in the tree. However in Thailand you can also try to ask and see if you can get durians which naturally ripens and fall by itself just like what we are used to in Malaysia. You might be pleasantly surprise . Give it a go.
In Jamaica, 🇯🇲 we have fruits similar. It's called jackfruit and mountainsop

@Medical MJ correct..also durian is spiky while Jackfruit is less spiky(doesn't have thorn) & usually in green colour.
Also, I think Durian also have a very pungent scent.

I imagine the difference in taste is just like all other fruit. I love bannanas, but when they're not ripe, some varieties too, they taste gross. Completely different to one that is ripe and a nice variety. Same with all fruits.
