No need to expose anyone. If you see terms like "black gold", "king of kings" etc. It should already ring a bell that the seller gave those fanciful names to mark up the price. That should already be a red flag. Mao Shang Wang are only graded as A, B or C based on the fruit shape and how many "meat-filled" sections and not its taste by the durian plantations. Grade A is big and not odd shaped, grade B is odd shaped and grade C is small baby-sized. So it is possible for grade C to taste better than grade A but grade C will almost never have more meat than grade A.

In singapore, i've seen many durian sellers(those non-reputable ones) selling fake varieties as the real ones. For example, i've seen D13 sold as D175 red prawn(红虾 or udang merah). Some even sell Thai MonThong (Golden Pillow or 金枕头) as Musang king at Musang king price! The rest are shown in the video, old tree, highland old tree, black gold, wang zhong wang, tai shan wang etc all are simply still Musang king but they sell u at higher price. Advice to buy from reputable sellers with a long history in the durian business, they won't sell u fake varieties coz they have a reputation to uphold.
To me, all durian were once known as "kampong durian". Over the generations, during the mass commercialisation of the food, businessmen, particularly the Chinese durian dealer and grower began to give names to the difference varieties. Like the musang king, there were 3 versions of its originality. Some durians had good taste and texture, as good as Musang King. They use to call bit Pumpkin because of its 5 star bottom or shape of a pumpkin. That is my take.
Singapore’s durians are so legendary, they must be grown in secret underground farms beneath Orchard Road. I once saw a durian tree growing in a Singapore parking lot. Truly, nature finds a way!

The Thai variety Chanee was grown in Malaysia since 1980's . The taste depends on the soil grown . Generally it taste bitter and slightly sweet with creamy . It is my favourite. Another thai variety is ganyau , with its long stem . The taste is really bitter . Very hard to find .
The Thai Chanee durian that is grown in Northern Malaysia is D15. It will drop when they are ripe and with some alcoholic taste but the flesh is not as smooth as the Musang King. I know because I have grown this variety before. The D15 variety if still exists will be more than 30 years old and alot of farmers have change to the popular varieties.
As for the Ganyau (long stem) the flesh is very smooth, the seeds are small but the smell is not for every one liking because it's different from other durians. This variety is more than 30 years old that is grown in Northern Malaysia. I know because I have grown this variety before.

Singapore may already be able to take advantage of community open spaces or community garden by planting fruit trees with Singapore's identity...in addition to flower trees and shade trees that can give Singapore's identity... maybe a special variety of durian tree? which was first cultured and planted in Singapore?
You don't plant fruit trees in parks (or in other public space such as sidewalks). They are higher in maintenance and the dropped fruit on the ground is a liability.
Tupai king was grafted in many old tree plant many place now, including Johor after the Tupai king start became famous being last few years, as the Penang Tupai King seller said, the old tree will produce high quality Tupai king durian after 3 years , i know that is tupai king tree start fruiting in my place in Johor segamat.
How did the panel visually tell the difference between the Black Gold and MSW? I'm really curious and very interested to learn. I love eating durians and ever since I've learned that King of Kings, Black Gold, Old Tree and MSW are basically all MSW, I've refused to pay more than the prevailing market price of MSW for any durian that's labelled as those premium ones. I see it as the seller trying to make more money by using these marketing "tricks". But I don't want to just use a blanket "ban" on them. If there is a real distinguishing visual characteristic to it, I want to learn it. May not make me willing to pay more for it, but at least I can tell if a seller is honestly asking for more because it is "premium" MSW, or if he's just taking advantage of the "premium" name.
would be interesting to do a comparison of durian seller from malaysia and singapore, the sellers from singapore would say from personal experience have less exposure to durian compared to malaysia and would have different thoughts in identifying the fruits, as per this video the comments on them identifying musang king is not the same. Like how the seed is flat..we have D24 with such seeds here also so I dont think its true.
One thing that always impresses me about Singaporeans is that they really know how to analyse Asian food and articulate them in good English... We Malaysians on the other hand would just makan and makan and the only expression we can come up with is "Fuyooh... this very nice"... 😁😁
@@markzzzzberg1312 BTW, Allow me to correct your grammar. I think you meant to say "Speak FOR yourself" right? 😅😅😅😂 Nak peli org tapi grammer saloh... malu ooi!! 😆😆
As a malaysian, its all part of the hype marketing,im not going to buy it I remembered it well at ome time before covid season i think around 2017-2019 the supply for durian in malaysia is over the demand, the price felt as low as it can be as nobody would want to buy durian anymore, its just too much Then all of sudden, those durian farmers introduce a special breed which is musang king which they only exported to China, but, the local can get it too and its just expensive as hell because its "rare breed" and then all of sudden, people started to hunting this rare breed to have a taste of it And the demand were over the supply once again, durian becoming a must have fruit during its season, and later theres more breed coming in too If rambutan seller want to be rich, try selling the yellow rambutan or green one as a rare breed,or introduce some purple rambutan as the rare breed and make it a plus selling point easily For me its always two type of durian only, kampung and kahwin, nothing more
That's why when I find a trustworthy seller, I cling on for dear life. The sad reality is that finding such a seller can be quite a journey, and that you have to pay "school fees" along the way in the form of not getting what you paid for.
I heard long ago before all these big name varieties came onto the scene that Singapore used to produce the best durians. The last time I tasted local SG durian was in Pulau Ubin decades ago. They were small and the flesh thin. Can’t recall the taste though but cannot compare to even Mao Shan Wang.
It's all commercial branding. Initially, everyone started with D24, later D101. Some use ioi. Later, D196 , commercialise as musang king. MARDI and local R&D did a lot of research for better durian.
There is probably no way to validate the durian species by a central board and award certificate of authenticity.. So it's really based on experience and your level of trust with the seller.
C 'on CNA ! Musang King is from an unknown pedigree , that was a product of chance discovery , among the pool of all the above named varieties which are geographical varieties , from monsoon side of the Peninsula where there 's one wild durian that has not been taxamocically "discovered". This excempts the Black Thorn. All the local varietiy names pre-date the Musang King , but don't measure up , but from which pool , came the Musang King. These local varieties are so limited that "geographical variety" feels a mismnomer.(There's not enough fruits to export to Singapore , let alone China.) Durian segregation paleontologically is down to the annual migration route of the flying fox. (You don't see that anymore. The fruit bat does't really cross state borders , and are distracted by banana nectar.) (On top of that guano's got a price on it's head , illegal it may be to harvest.) By the time the British landed in Malaya , they recorded "pollen contamination" i.e. hybridization. ( Malayan Botany). Anthropologically durian seeds travel a long distance in someone's pocket or luggage before and after the British. Propagation looked a different shape , when.
Last Month paid s$88 for 1 Day “All you can eat MSW buffet” in JB. My advice to dear S’porean, NEVER EVER JOIN SUCH TOUR!!! Only less than 10% offered to us are actually MSW!!!😭😭
If my Singaporean friend buy flight ticket daily trip to enjoy fresh durian (cheaper price) in Penang/KL/Ipoh rather than buy expensive durian at Singapore itself, are its more worth it?
Honestly who started selling durians based on weight? It’s like buying Mala ingredients based on weight. If you say longans are sold based on weight, it’s understandable because it’s small, but a big fruit like durian should be just by the price of each fruit, technically people are buying the weight of the husk which they are throwing away.
So are new varietals are actually new cultivars, or names assigned to a premium subset of a cultivar like MSW? When the Malaysian seller says 1 in 1000 durians are tupai kings, it means the total number of durians are harvested from tupai king tree is far and few between (because there are not enough trees yet). But, when the 99 durian boss said he needs to open 100 durians to 'find' one black gold, he is suggesting that black gold is essentially a name given to MSW that possess a certain rare taste profile, not a new cultivar. Also, when a seller sells dehusked durian as black gold, it might mean they have opened many and sold the best ones as black gold (or it might just be a marketing lie). \For unopened durian, unless the durian seller can confidently identify the durian taste profile through sight and smell, otherwise it is probably also a lie to label durians as black gold. No wonder when a buyer ask for bitter durian, sellers direct buyers to the more expensive black golds even though there is no guarantee that the black golds are actually more butter. Just like wrongly labeled fish and wagyu beef, we have to live with frauds in the durian market...
So in simple terms, everything is Mao shang Wang haha. They just see see oh it looks like black gold so let label it as it is and same goes for other variants of durians.

Singapore may already be able to take advantage of community open spaces or community garden by planting fruit trees with Singapore's identity...in addition to flower trees and shade trees that can give Singapore's identity...
maybe a special variety of durian tree? which was first cultured and planted in Singapore?
Problem: the heavier durian fruits tend to fall, quite rarely but still.

Safety SOPs may be required
i never ever see npark plant a fruit tree before , anyway its illegal to pluck their fruit tree
You don't plant fruit trees in parks (or in other public space such as sidewalks). They are higher in maintenance and the dropped fruit on the ground is a liability.
wow. do you think it really that easy? hahahhahahahahhaha. if that the case malaysia should have durian tree beside klcc or bukit bintang.
at 11:32 Mr.Chew mentioned he 'discovered' original Tupai King in Tapah kampung? In that case, who originally owns the original Tupai King tree/strain?
大芭 means deep forest 。see 原住民大芭=森林榴莲 KL liew.wrong translation by singaporean.
The OG is a wild tree.
Orang Asli
Is there a difference when masak tempoyak using expensive durian? I like masak tempoyak udang 🤤🤤🤤
😍😍😍😋😋😋
Tupai king was grafted in many old tree plant many place now, including Johor after the Tupai king start became famous being last few years, as the Penang Tupai King seller said, the old tree will produce high quality Tupai king durian after 3 years , i know that is tupai king tree start fruiting in my place in Johor segamat.
Just remember these mass market durians have been grown in plantation that the original rain forest once stood just 15-20 years ago .

Product differentiation and "branding" is one way to charge more
Im hooked!!
MSW is good enough for me no matter what variant. Will not go to the extreme for some rare gem and will not fork for that ultimate price.
Best assignment. I'm sure Diana agrees
Kasap merah. One which fermented so quickly. That it is now rarely exported.
As a malaysian, its all part of the hype marketing,im not going to buy it
I remembered it well at ome time before covid season i think around 2017-2019 the supply for durian in malaysia is over the demand, the price felt as low as it can be as nobody would want to buy durian anymore, its just too much
Then all of sudden, those durian farmers introduce a special breed which is musang king which they only exported to China, but, the local can get it too and its just expensive as hell because its "rare breed" and then all of sudden, people started to hunting this rare breed to have a taste of it
And the demand were over the supply once again, durian becoming a must have fruit during its season, and later theres more breed coming in too
If rambutan seller want to be rich, try selling the yellow rambutan or green one as a rare breed,or introduce some purple rambutan as the rare breed and make it a plus selling point easily
For me its always two type of durian only, kampung and kahwin, nothing more
That's why when I find a trustworthy seller, I cling on for dear life.
Just this season, I’ve seen numerous dishonest sellers transferring durians from mao shan wang section to black gold section
The original and numbawan best durian in the world and some say the galaxy is Musang King Mao Shan Wang from Malaysia
It’s basically MSW and black thorn.
Durian wise ... i prefer creamy sweet ( not bitter please ) and not so thick flesh ... usually, what kind of durian type should i get?
Our durians farm in kampung every season we have this tupai king durians, durians with holes eaten by tupai.Very cheap almost free of charge.😅.
Make madotary for importer to paint color code for correct type of durain avoid scam at stem
Didnt know SAF section's fastest runner from OG Every Singaporean Son is now a durian seller
No wonder he looked so familiar haha
Which of the 5?
Seeing a lots of Chinese from Mainland China, Japanese & Korean visited Malaysia because of durian.
Jelebu in Negeri Sembilan got new Year 1 Durian Harvest
Last Month paid s$88 for 1 Day “All you can eat MSW buffet” in JB. My advice to dear S’porean, NEVER EVER JOIN SUCH TOUR!!! Only less than 10% offered to us are actually MSW!!!😭😭
that laughter at @9:18 true joy
Meanwhile, poor me haggling for $5 per box... or $10 for 3 boxes...
If my Singaporean friend buy flight ticket daily trip to enjoy fresh durian (cheaper price) in Penang/KL/Ipoh rather than buy expensive durian at Singapore itself, are its more worth it?
Should have tried the wine experiment whereby they put the different varieties of durians and ask the experts to rank in taste and pricing...
the Tupai king is like the PUYAT variety in the Philippines.
Tupai king, black thorn, maoshangwan are diff thing. Black gold from old tree, normally old tree give richer taste compared to younger tree
Should go and shame the durian sellers that mis label
I heard there is Guo Shan Wank.
The seller bought from the farm base on weight so, how to sell without weighting the whole fruit?
Probably the same way crabs and lobsters are being sold? You probably don't eat the shell but they contribute most to the weight.
Black thorns is not new in the market. It was not so popular due to popularity of Musang King
it is too expensive 😂
Weirdly Sarawak wasn't in the conversation. We have lots of planter here too. Maybe ours go to Singapore as well.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
When is Singapore ever going to note the existence of red durian that can only be found from wild forests of Borneo :(
Chew Chee Wan is so witty 😅
All these durain sellers are profiteering. In the future all "premium" durains should affix a cert of authenticity like LV handbags.
Singaporean money easier to con when it comes to durian because they love durian too much 😅
So are new varietals are actually new cultivars, or names assigned to a premium subset of a cultivar like MSW?
I bought a giant 5 kg durian and it was almost 4 USD. I am going to try it tonight and see how it tastes😂
Farmers effort were not interviewed. The content is just not fair for farmers....
They are 100% different varieties. Some vendors may mislabel though.
They taste different and I still prefer musang king. It’s a whole bs with grading just for marketing.
The seed also not small, being played with branding.
So in simple terms, everything is Mao shang Wang haha. They just see see oh it looks like black gold so let label it as it is and same goes for other variants of durians.
I heard there is White Thorn.
I just buy durian that are on lelong and they still taste good anyway haha.
I love durians so much it’s my favourite fruit.
